The Willow Tree Swing takes a look into the different meanings we attribute to the color green through short stories and poems. From the beginnings of a sapling, to magical settings with sleeping princesses, to sorrowful hearts healing from grief. This anthology delves into every phase, and shade, of green.
Xanna Renae loves daydreaming about how to save her characters from the messes she puts them in. Currently she is giving life to the ideas inside her head from rural Missouri where she lives with her husband, Noah, and two cats, Calcifer and Zelda. She has a bachelor of arts in Creative Writing from Southern New Hampshire University, where she graduated with honors. When she isn’t writing you can find her tucked away in her little bungalow reading, snuggling with her cat, or playing video games with her husband.
Fair disclosure: I am one of the authors included in this collection; you can read my short story “The Last Green Dragon” here. I’m very fond of this Anastasia-tinged story, about a little girl with hope-filled magic who wants to bring back spring from the white dragons.

As for the rest of the stories and poems: My two favorite stories out of the collection were “Cursed” by Courtney Manning and “Wish Away” by Julia Skinner. I loved the Beauty & the Beast retelling Manning wrote, and I’m hoping that there may be a sequel! 👀 The twist at the end was *chef’s kiss*, even though I suspected the curse, I did NOT expect who it was. (If that doesn’t make sense, read the story!) Skinner’s short story about two brothers also touched me. I found their connection really heartfelt, and the message important, especially to people who have felt like a mistake. To me, it was a very well-done anti-su!c!de message without mentioning the words. 💜
And my favorite poem of the collection was “Sunken Treasure” by Willow Whitehead. What can I say—I’m a sucker for morose mermaid poetry. Who knew that genre existed?! 💜
My only con was that I felt some of the stories might have needed a smidge more editing. Otherwise, this was a short read that I knocked out in one sitting. Love it! 💜
This was REALLY well done. The poetry was all amazing. The first couple stories were my favourite, but there wasn’t a single bad story in here. I’m relent impressed. For such a small collection, it really packs a punch!
