The next book in the Dread Wood instalment did not disappoint! It was great being back at Dread Wood High with our band of unlikely heroes, anticipating their next face off with the terrifying Latchitts.

Filled with tension, suspense and humour Killick has created another exiting and fun novel that has the right amount of scare-factor; I know that I will never be able to listen to the innocent ‘pop goes the weasel’ nursery rhyme the same again.

Creepy clowns, apoplectic chickens and a whole lot of heart, this book was a fantastic sequel and I just can’t wait to get stuck into book three.

The second book in the Dread Wood series and this time an app, hide and seek, clowns, more scary things! Perfect for Halloween!

😍 The Cover! Love love it. Though it also terrifies me.
😍 That Colette is now part of the team!
😍 The new song + game that we now have. Yep, we went from itsy bitsy spider to another fun children song, yep, ain’t that lovely? I cannot wait to see what is the next song.
😍 Flinch. Well, before it all started to go craycray. That was just great fun and while I did think it was a bit over the top that everyone participated seemingly, I would have expected a few kids to go against the flow as you will often see.
😍 The Latchitts really upped their game in creepiness and how far they were going. Holy crap. They were already a couple to avoid in the previous book but dang this one? They really had no stops. They had plans and they were going for it.
😍 The masks they wore. NOPE.
😍 Gus! He is really my favourite of the team with his puns and how he always (well OK, almost always) finds something fun and light in a dark situation. He made me laugh more than once with his sentences.
😍 Mr. C. Oh, boy. The man who tries to be hip with the kids. And you know what, despite him trying a bit too hard, I liked him a lot. He is such a fun character and he just makes me smile. He is kind and sweet, and he actually listens to kids. He is actually there for them if they need him. And that is fantastic.
😍 The fairground bits, and then especially when things went totally over the top wrong. Those had me on the edge of my seat because WOW, chaos and destruction GO. And then there is a ghost train which is also a big nope.
😍 What creature is inside people. WELL, joy. NOPE.

🙄
🙄 The bickering between characters just frustrated me and made me want to read less and less, later we do find out the reason why they are like this, but that was just too late for me. By this time I was just frustrated and unhappy. Wondering what happened to my dear group of friends.
🙄 How Naira is constantly called the genius, while I don’t see her do much genius stuff. In fact, it is Angelo who does most of the brainiac things.

But I cannot wait for the next book in the series! So excited to see what is next for this group and what our duo will be up to next~ I am so excited I got to read this during Spooktober! Perfect!

Well, no star rating for this 1 either. While I enjoyed the story of this 1 even more, GD was said yet again, so I don’t feel comfortable giving it a rating for MG readers. It’s said on page 80, & I’m thinking it will be just said once again like the 1st book. But then on page 333, like 20 some pages before the end, it’s said again. Ugh. So unnecessary in my opinion. Again, this is a personal issue having to do with my faith, & also being raised by my mama..lol I could never recommend a book with that in it to kids. She’d be sooooo mad lol. But if you don’t have issues with that, & aren’t a kid but an adult reading(like me), then this story was even better than the 1st. The creepy factor was amped up so much. By the human bad guys(so creepy just them), but also the new “animal/creature” in this one-ughhhh so creepy. Loved the whole continuation into this one, & how this friend group has grown & gotten so close. They have the best dynamic, & are quite funny together-especially Gus. Mr. Canton has my heart though. I love both books having a different nursery rhyme tune, & different creepy creature so far as well. I also loved the whole idea of the “Flinch” aspect in here, & every detail
that goes with it. Since to me this is more upper MG/young YA, I decided to give more to the review than if it was more MG MG, if that makes sense. Another BEAUTIFUL cover by Tom Clohosy Cole too.💜

It is a spooky book, I loved it!

The story is about a new app, a game called "Flinch". In the game you can get a point whenever you scare people. When the music in the app begins, you have to participate. You think it is an innocent game, but then people start acting strange, as if someone is taking over their brain. And suddenly a fair called "Fear Ground" comes tot town, with people behaving differently than normal. Club Loser, a club formed by a bunch of friends, try to find out what's going on. But they encounter old enemies, snakes and strange creatures, all looking for revenge. More and more fights are happening. Fear Ground is like "Flinch", but scarier!

Fear Ground is scary and adventurous, I liked it as much as Dread Wood! Angelo and his team, Club Loser, are very brave and they don't give up. They are a good team, each very different but they work well together and that is also what I like about the book. I hope to read more books in this series!

3.5 stars

I read the first book in this series back in 2022 and absolutely loved it. You can see my review for it here. This book follows the same group of kids from the first book but in this one they are all friends now. I think these books are labeled middle grade, but they are in high school so that's more YA to me.

In this book we are introduced to the game Flinch. Basically, it's an app that plays a song to start off a round and another song to end the round and your goal is to scare people and make them flinch. Of course there's something more sinister happening, but no one knows it until it's too late.

So, here's the thing. I had fun reading this and it was a quick read. You can easily read it in one sitting. I loved being back in this world with these characters and while once again the kids are fighting for their lives there's also some humor thrown in. The reason this one is only getting a 3.5-star rating is because I felt like I was pretty much reading the same story I read in the first book just with new creepy things and under different circumstances. It even has the same bad guy(s) which I was expecting.

It's not a bad read at all but it wasn't as exciting reading this one as it was with the first one because I didn't know what to expect in the first book so that was more surprising to me. I have a feeling the other books will follow this formula as well, but I do still want to read them.

Yes, you guessed it, I don't think it's a huge spoiler to say the horrible Latchitts are back. I love the creepiness which is on full blast right from the beginning of the book. And then it gets even creepier! This one is way scarier (and ickier) than the first book.
Everyone is playing Flinch, a scary game set up on a phone app. But where did it come from, who is behind it and why??? I wasn't quite convinced with the premise of the game but it does open the way to a lot of adventures.
I had my suspicions along the way but it was clever how the story completely threw me off and I had to go back and see what I had missed.

Fear Ground has completely just fed into my nostalgia and gave my inner teenager the Halloween 'Goosebumps' style fix that I needed.

This is the first of the Dread Wood books that I've read, but I'll be looking out for the first now. I had no problem reading this as a standalone though, although there's reference to happenings in the fist book, there's enough information that it doesn't stop you understanding this book.

I love the use of a creepy app controlling the students (a bit if a real world metaphor here I think), combined with the adrenaline junkie brain eating parasites and the teenage dream team that can't be broken.

This was a thrilling, funny and crazy read. I really enjoyed it.

A fantastic sequel to the first Dread Wood book.
Now that Angelo and his friends are a familiar unit, and we know that creepiness is never far away, this story thunders along at a menacing pace.
Sinister plans and shuddersome threats crawl about on every page. Jennifer Killick's thoroughly contemporary fright fest is pitched perfectly for young readers and is a ghastly comic treat.
(And Mr Canton is the OG. Isn't that right, fam?)

I was so excited to be accepted to read this on NetGalley after really enjoying Dread Wood. Jennifer Killick is a genius in the way she writes age-appropriate MG horror and this was no exception. The children in my Y6 class really enjoyed her books last year so I can’t wait to share them with my upcoming class, especially this one when it’s released!

This series is genuinely really good. It feels like a psychological horror, almost, but for kids. REALLY sets you on edge, really unnerving. Definitely recommend! Can't wait to read the next one after finally reading my other *checks notes* 24 books.

This was a return to the Latchitts and honestly… might’ve scared me more than the last one! Fairgrounds, masks, being controlled… all big nopes from me! I love how fast paced and readable these are - all while being totally terrified. Can’t wait to read the last one! My Year 6 classroom library is going to be a scarier place because of this… but kids will love it!

Dread Wood Fear Ground is another terrifyingly good kids' horror story from the wonderful Jennifer Killick, who is really staking her claim as the queen of middle grade horror!.

It's gruesome and creepy and funny, everything I've come to hope for and expect, as she just gets better and better with each book.

Before we get to the horror though, the heart of this book is the friendship circle, Club Loser. They've grown since book one, and Colette is now firmly a member of the group, making for some interesting shifts in dynamics but that feeling of companionship, of people who are always there for each other and would do anything for each other is stronger than ever! Clearly almost dying together forged a strong bond! They still have that Breakfast Club vibe of kids of very different types thrown together in detention and finding that they have more in common than differences, but this is used to great effect not only to give each character their own feel but also to highlight some important and oft-ignored issues.

Money troubles is the most obvious one, and Angelo is still very much representative of those kids in a school who don't have the money for new clothes or shiny gadgets, who have to make do with what they can, who know exactly how much lunch money they can afford to spend and exactly what it will cost them. This is contrasted pretty sharply with Hallie in particular, and I loved the descriptions of her house and how fancy it seemed to the others, with a spare bedroom and artisan crisps! It's done with a light touch and a sensitivity but hopefully it'll help to raise awareness and build empathy among school children reading it.

Something else touched upon but not explored in great detail is Gus and his stoma bag. I liked the way this was handled. He has one, he jokes about it, it's there, but it's not a huge issue. It just is. It's cleverly done and I'm sure it'll find its audience who'll really understand and appreciate it, as well as those who go away thinking about it.

Okay, enough heartwarming friendship and representation. What about the horror?

Oh. My. Goodness!

Jennifer Killick can absolutely bring the horror, and she does not hold back! There's a new game in school, all around scaring each other and making people flinch. But is there more to it than simple schoolyard scares? Well, yes of course there is! Some familiar villains make a very creepy return, and this time they're nastier than ever! Where the Dread Wood narrative happened over a single day in an abandoned school, Fear Ground happens over a longer period and the whole school is involved. The horror sequences are played out to a tune of Pop Goes The Weasel too, and I defy you not to hear it in your head and shiver. It's the perfect musical accompaniment, childlike and fun on the outside but pretty creepy when you think about it, and the book perfectly matches that slow ominous build up as we wait for the jack in the box to go POP. The spiders of the first book are long gone, but, if anything, they've been replaced by another even nastier biological horror. And as Jennifer winds up the music box, the tension slowly builds up to the fair ground coming to town, and a truly breathtaking climax.

Oh, and Mr Canton has to be one of the most excruciatingly embarrassing and funny characters I've come across in a very long time. He had me cringing so hard!

Will you flinch? I did.

Freaky Smartphone app...check

Creepy clown masks...check

Parasitic critters...check

Hypnotic nursery rhymes on repeat...check!

The Queen of Middle Grade horror has done it again! Jennifer Killick has delivered another compulsive page-turner of a book to be devoured in one sitting. This one will get so under your skin it will have you squirming throughout!

The 'Flinch' app craze has swept through the students of Dread Wood High. The more you scare your friends, the more points on the app you get. At first it's fun, but soon fun is replaced by fear - especially when most rounds seem to start in the eerie Dread Wood, where the teens were forced to defeat killer spiders in the previous instalment of the horror series.

Angelo and the rest of the 'Club Loser' gang notice that everyone is behaving more and more strangely every day - almost as if something is taking over their brains. And then there's the freaky app notification tune, nursery rhyme 'Pop Goes the Weasel...' when the music plays, players are powerless to resist its control.

The teens don't want to believe it but everything points to their old nemesis, creepy caretakers turned mad scientists The Latchitts and this time, they've unleashed parasitic worms into the world - it is so totally gross!

Angelo, Gus, Naira, Hallie and Collette set about to try and find a way to bring the deadly duo down, but once the Latchitts discover they're onto them, Club Loser is in grave danger. They'll stop at nothing until their evil master plan is complete. The gang find themselves in several spine-chilling situations but the chapter in the girls' toilets was so freaky!

Adrenaline and excitement levels reach fever pitch when the fair arrives in town. But with the vast majority of Dread Wood under the control of the app, chaos quickly ensues. Fights break out and the final showdown at the Fear Ground is is an absolute nail-biter of a finale.

Returning to Dread Wood High and being reunited with Angelo and the Club Loser gang felt so good, not to mention the force of nature that is geography teacher Mr Canton. Gus and Mr C are without a doubt my two favourite characters - they are both absolutely hilarious, (if not a little hapless!) Jennifer totally nails the perfect balance of horror and humour and her teen characters are totally on-point.

I cannot wait for book 3!

FEAR GROUND is another creepy horror story from the queen of MG horror.

If you thought hide and seek could be dull, this book introduces a new version called Flinch that is anything but dull. Everyone is hider and seeker at once, trying to scare others with the creepy addition of the Pop Goes the Weasel song. We open with a tense game of it, and its involvement in the book only gets more sinister as unexplained events happen during it.

The book remains on school property though using it in a very different way, referencing the previous book and keeping some of the themes, but still feeling like it's own thing. A slightly-overused school with leaking taps and scuffed floors? It's both so banal a setting (most of us can see our schools in it) and yet unsettling at the same time. The use of the fair at the end was very good. I loved how apocalyptic it all went, the chaos set against a slightly sketchy, neon-light fairground.

The DREAD WOOD series is, in some places, billed as a comedy-horror series, and that is completely true. It has the right mix of nope-out scares, grossness, and humour. You're flinching and going "nope nope nope" at the various schemes of the villains, but also chuckling at Gus' comments and endless enthusiasm.

I really appreciate this. I have a very low scare bar, particularly with the grosser/body horror side of things (which this series does include. The worms? UGH! *shudders*) Having a mix of comedy and horror here gives you space to be scared but also recover a little before the next sequence, moderating just how tense you can get (and then making the next jump worse than if it had come immediately after the previous.)

I'd forgotten how funny the teacher Mr Canton was with his determined (but not entirely correct) slang usage. There is always one teacher who tries to "speak like the kids" and fails in the most cringey way, and that is Mr Canton. The nice thing is you can see how much he truly cares for the students and I love seeing good teachers in books.

There are at least two more DREAD WOOD books to come, and the next one (FLOCK HORROR) is out very soon...

I am a huge fan of Jennifer Killick, who is one of the best Middle Grade horror writers around and have previously reviewed Crater Lake (book one and two) and the original Dread Wood, all of which I highly recommend. Fear Ground features the same characters who met during Saturday detention in the original Dread Wood and picks up the same story some months later whilst the kids are still in Year Seven (first year of secondary school). Dread Wood is the forest which surrounds their remotely located school and in the first book the children are stalked by the nasty school caretakers who are up to no good. Although it is not apparent at the start, Fear Ground is more connected to Dread Wood than you might originally think and it might have worked better as a standalone mystery rather all the references to the previous book. If anything, it might have been a better read if the ‘baddie’ in this book had nothing to do with its predecessor, but that was not the case.

The initial idea of the book was great, there’s a new craze at Dead Wood High concerning a computer app called ‘Flinch.’ The game is connected to fear and making other kids also playing the game jump. At first it’s fun, but soon fun is replaced by something more sinister. Shortly after the main characters notice that everyone is behaving a little bit more strangely every day, almost as if something is possessing them. Adult readers might start thinking of The Demon Headmaster, but what happens is much nastier than hypnotism. Although the visiting fair features prominently on the cover and title, it does not actually play that big a part in the story which was slightly disappointing. Soon Flinch gets very real and excitement turns to scares. I liked the idea of Flinch but thought it might have worked better if disconnected from book one, but ultimately the strongest element of the book was the characters, their banter and the acceptance of Collette to the group. There is lots to enjoy here for young horror fans. AGE RANGE 9/10+

I'm so glad I got to read this after finishing the first book. My head was already in the Dread Wood universe, so to continue the club loser story was brilliant, I was there!
🤡
The story continues four months after club loser is founded, bringing Angelo, Gus, Naira and Hallie, and new friend Collette. A new app, Flinch, has taken the school by storm, but there are sinister motives behind what should be a harmless game. Throw into the works a travelling fair, you've got a disaster on your hands, but the gang overcome obstacles, and get things back on track.
🤡
As always, you will find no spoilers here, but book 1 didn't help my fear of spiders. And for book two, let's just say, my favourite food is chicken, so I'll always be second-guessing my meals!
🤡
Again, if you'd like to read an upto date version of goosebumps, I'd definitely recommend the Dread Wood books, especially with book three just around the corner...

Having read the first book Dread Wood for a blog tour last year and loving it I couldn’t wait to pick up this book.

Fear Ground follows on from Dread Wood and the gang is back together trying to stay alive as the evil Latchetts return for revenge on the group.

This was a little slower than the first book but it’s still a well-written sequel that pulls you in and takes you on an exciting adventure that you’ll definitely never forget.

The characters are well-developed and loved how believable they were. Each character had his or her problems as well as personalities which made them feel like individuals rather than being portrayed as all being the same.

This is a great book and can’t wait to continue the series. Definitely a book I recommend to any Goosebump fans or anyone looking for a creepy Middle grade.

This was great! It really pulled me in, wanting to know more about what would happen in this book and what had happened in the previous book that I now need to read. It's billed as "perfect for fans of Goosebumps", but I enjoyed this far more than any Goosebumps.

The characters are well-drawn and bring a full sense of their personality. The chill factor is quite high, throughout the story, which is just what you need from a Middle Grade horror book. It's all believable enough to really make you think about what could possibly happen, even though it's fiction.

A few less Urban Dictionary words would have got the rating up to 5*. I'm not sure it's possible for someone to say the word "skills" with a z!

Review: I read the first one not that long ago and absolutely loved it so was very excited to see the second one become available on BorrowBox Audiobook and I requested it without hesitation. I did enjoy this one but there was something missing for me that was present in the first one. I think it's because for me, this sort of book should be a stand-alone because the longer the series goes on, the more unbelievable it gets and the more I am asked to suspend my disbelief which I can find difficult to do when it's a largely contemporary book with a bit of sci-fi. I love the gangs interactions with each other and the relationships that they have built but I think if this goes on more than a trilogy, I won't continue reading.

This follow up to Dread Wood is not for the squeamish that's for sure.
Angelo and the gang are back and this time there is a game called Flinch doing the rounds, when the music plays you have to make others jump and gain points. Where did the game originate, who created it and is there a more sinister reason to the game than first meets the eye?
I listened to the audio of this one, and had to stop at points as I'm a terrible wimp hah. I enjoyed spending time with the characters again, the dynamic is clever and kept me interested and I laughed more than once at the dialogue between them. As with the first this was a great mix of goosebumps and Point Horror and was ideal for reading in October.

Such a HUGE let down for being a part of this series of books.....

After I had read Killick's "Dread Dedention" and loving it.....knowing that the same kids were in this books, I was excited to see what they were up to in this one......and what a let down. The worst part was the deception of the cover image. You look at this and think 'amusement park horrors' well, you don't even GET to the park till about 80% of this audiobook, and then when you did, it was a huge SO WHAT. There was one scene that was kinda creepy that involved maggots with teeth. Cannot recommend this snoozefest.

I enjoyed the first Dread Wood book so much I had to start the second immediately 😂.

So.. this time around Angelo and his friends are back again but this time they are more afraid due to what happened with the creatures at school. This time around the group play the game of Flinch which is all the craze at their school! But why are there people with clown masks that seem to follow the group around?

I love a series which has the same characters throughout the books! It's one of my favourites especially for character development! I'm absolutely loving Mr C 😂 he's so cringe I am living for it.

Firstly I just want to say this front cover is absolutely incredible, it reminds me of the funhouse point horror front cover which is an absolute classic and I read this when I was middle grade age a few years after its release so I think that most kids would find this appealing,
I thought the book was well written with a gripping storyline and well developed charcaters, however I didn't rea;ise this was a series and so I think that in order for everything to make sense book one should be read first. I really enjoyed it though.
