Demons wreaking havoc on Earth. A secret council run by mysterious angels. A warrior whose dreams could save the world.

While grieving the loss of her father, 19-year-old Alice Griffin wakes up with perfect vision. Odd since she'd worn glasses every day since she was a child. Soon after, she's attacked by a malevolent force and learns not only do demons exist, but that she's been chosen to fight them.

At the behest of a mysterious, handsome stranger with ties to her past, Alice joins a hidden school meant for training warriors. Once there, she quickly realizes that demons aren't the only things that go bump in the night. Vampires and shapeshifters exist too. So do angels, who predict waves of violence from terrifying creatures. Angels who only speak through prophets chosen from the noblest warriors.

Only prophets are meant to have predictive dreams. So, why is Alice having them too? And why are her dreams warning her that her father's death was no accident, that the angels can't be trusted... and that an apocalypse may be looming just around the corner?

As always this author blew me away with this story. It was wonderfully written and planned out. It flowed so well making it a nice smooth read. Easy to read and follow along with. Very unique and a story all of its own. I never felt through out this book of this seems very similar or I think I’ve read something very similar to this, that’s something I love about this author. Her ideas are completely her own!

The characters! Every book I read by her her characters become so real to me. I find myself in deep thought about who works best with whom, or how she gets the characters to have such an effortless friendship. By the end they feel like life long friends, this book was no different. Our heroine is Alice, she is kind of just drifting through life trying to figure out her next step like so many of us. Except for one thing, she has these awful nightmares and think she’s going crazy. Throughout this whole book you never see her give up and she’s always one to forgive when forgiveness is needed. She’s strong, feisty, and quick on her toes! Sebastian is halfbreed, which two species he is I’ll leave for you to learn yourself, confidant in his abilities, keeps his promises, and finds himself knocked off his axis by Alice which both intrigues him and confuses him. Their relationship is beautiful to watch and makes the story so much more than it would be without them. Cole Fitzpatrick, warrior extraordinaire, is quirky, very intelligent, and a bit of a half breed hater. He helps Alice in more ways but angers her just as much. He sees more of what’s going on than most but is still left in the dark. Can you see the love triangle happening? There is one and it’s fun to watch. The other trainees Jessie, Alondra, Jake, and Bronwyn aka Misty are greatly needed and don’t disappoint. I truly loved all of them. Jessie the joker, Misty the moody one, Jake the serious one, and Alondra the one who kind of keeps them together and things light. Jake I think truly grows the most and I love watching him and Alice actually having heart to heart moments and becoming each other’s cheerleaders. Truly beautiful. There are also a lot of professors and teachers who some are amazing and I loved them while others not so much. I’ll leave you to form your own opinions on them.

Angels, demons, warriors and secret societies; secrets, those going against what’s right, and so much more. It’s a nonstop ride of chaos and not knowing who to trust. Laugh out loud moments that give the book exactly what it needs to stay amazing and not become too much. One of the things I loved most about this book is we aren’t learning alone. We aren’t thrown into this new world to try and figure it out for ourselves. We get to learn along with Alice which makes you feel like you are a warrior right alongside her and who doesn’t want a book that creates and escape like that?! This book literally has everything right down to the tender heartfelt moments. A warning though, there were a few times I almost threw my phone but it all worked itself out, although Jake was done a little dirty in my opinion which you’ll need to read to find out!

As I’m sure you’ve learned thus far that overall this book is absolutely amazing, I’ll say it again THIS BOOK IS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! Now I’ll leave you with a quote that has stuck with me since reading it and hopefully it will get you wanting to read it as well! It’s a quote said to Alice by her father that always stuck with her:

‘When the whole world goes to hell, it’s how you make your own heaven that defines you.’

TW: self harm (which the author does a fantastic job warning readers of herself)

This is a great start to what sounds like will be a good NA Urban Fantasy.

The first part was actually pretty creepy, with its demon descriptions and horror movie feel. I was also reading outside on the porch at midnight when I started it, so that only added to the feeling. Next up was a pretty standard secret training academy, with its handful of new characters and world rules.

The betrayer was pretty obvious, the romance at the end really felt rushed/forced, and (like I'd assumed from the beginning) the series title gave away what could have been a decent surprise at the end, but I'm definitely continuing the series to see where it goes.

I loved and enjoyed this story, and I hope there will be more to come—hint hint, wink wink.

Alice, Cole, Jessie, Alondra, Jake, and Misty are at a secret academy training to kill monsters such as demons, vampires, and shifters, to name a few. Awakened is a coming-of-age story with action, adventure, and romance. The main character, Alice, is a complex and capable young woman who develops into a butt-kicking warrior with special powers.
There is a trigger warning for self-harm. E. J. Rekab writes it authentically and with respect.

I look forward to anything this author writes, and I highly recommend her and her stories.

A superb new series begins ...

Oh wow. I settled into this new book by Elizabeth Rekab and couldn't contain my excitement.

This is the start of a new series, so the first half of the book is the slow burn of finding out about Alice, her past and revealing the dangerous new world she now reluctantly sees.

You can't help but already suspect everyone is not being as they seem ....

Then everything EXPLODES into action. By the last page you just HAVE to know what's going to happen next.

AMAZEBALLS. 😃

This is the first book of this author I have read and I'm happy it is the first book of a series that seems like it is going to be a GREAT one.

Please check trigger warnings

This story flowed so nicely between character growth, world building, and plot.

Plenty of Intrigue to Keep you Engaged

I loved Alice’s journey right from the onset. The ups and downs on her road to self-discovery did great to spotlight the nuances of her character. The story keeps you guessing on who to trust all the way to the end. I really loved how terrifying the demons were in this one. Between the angels, shifters and vamps there’s plenty to keep fans of supernatural thrillers entertained.

♥️💜⚔💀 Awesome to read!

Alice absolutely did not believe in miracles...

And yet that night, something incredible happened: Alice was able to see even the smallest microscopic details around her without glasses.

It was a real miracle, totally incomprehensible...

I love Elizabeth Rekab's style of writing.
You quickly become absorbed in the fast paced story and invested in the characters. There is always a twist or turn to keep you on your toes.

I feel maybe one or two of the characters could have been fleshed out a bit more and would have liked to know a bit more about the team's first mission.

I found this a real page turner and a really enjoyable story.
