Blueberry #14

Blueberry Cilt 3: 500.000 Dolarlık Adam

Rate this book

Read this as part of the same volume (the Titan/Epic reprints) that contained "The Chihuahua Pearl" (Blueberry #13).

The story in the follow-up to "The Chihuaha Pearl" struggles a bit more at pacing, but overall a very fun read. Blueberry is trapped in Mexico - hunted by the local governor, the Federales, and an outlaw gang composed of ex-Confederate soldiers. Blueberry tries to find a way to get to the covert asset with knowledge of the stashed gold, but finds that he may be trying to chew on too much.

Again, this is a fun time and Charlier's storytelling is engaging and he keeps things interesting with fun twists peppered in. Moebius' artwork is also just top notch stuff in this album as is to be expected.

I have a 1983 hardback reprint in French from Dargaud. Originally serialised in 1971 and published in book form in 1973, this is the 14th episode in the series and the second in the confederate gold story arc.

My comments on the previous episode apply here too. In addition, this superb prison break episode ramps up the suspense with numerous last minute escapes, rescues, double-crosses ... it’s frantic stuff, but still orchestrated masterfully. Everything is permanently on a knife edge. And one thing stands out for a tough guy’s cartoon in early 70s macho France ... Chihuahua Pearl is probably the toughest, smartest, most independent female cartoon character of the time. She takes care of business herself and skilfully manipulates all the action heroes around her. Really impressive.

Besides a caricatural Chinese torturer (to be fair, he may well be appropriate for the time and setting), the story captures the age, the location, and the culture very well, especially Confederate gentlemanly honour, which is deeply woven into the plot.

Altogether this is cracking stuff. It’s just a shame the colouring is so haphazard.
