Rate this book
Lorne isn’t convinced his new psychic detective agency is a good idea but when he receives a call from a boarding school, sat in the shadow of Clatworthy Reservoir he reluctantly agrees to help.

The wisdom of teenagers has caused a problem at the school. The students decided the Ouija board they made in class might be fun to use, but when their call is answered, everything changes.

The results have opened a door Lorne has to close or lives will be lost.

The team discover a dark secret. The rising waters of the reservoir that flooded an ancient village called Syndercombe concealed a twisted, evil mind who took the opportunity to hide his dead.

But his evil didn’t surrender when age robbed him of life and he’s returned to the school, seeking new victims for his twisted desires.

If Lorne, Heather and Ella can’t stop the rising evil in the reservoir then more than just the water will be polluted, the souls of the innocent will be lost to the bad waters of Clatworthy.

This was an excellent story and the author again uses vivid local history and landscape to start a formable background for Lorne and his fiance Heather. Heather has started Exmoor Psychic Agency although Lorne is not too enthusiastic about it since it might involvea ll his djinn. A call from the head master of local boarding school for teengers, a meeting with an old regimental buddy, and the death of one of the boys who had resided at the Academy may be more than Lorne can handle. History is again raising its nasty head where it appears an old knight and an old god are doing battle at the expense of the locals .Not everything ia what is appears to be and Lorne reachs out for help from his other friend Ella to try and solve the local events.
Very well writen and well worth reading but perhaps not alone at night!

Ghost

My Thoughts:

I am still in awe of Ghost! He was supposed to be a supernatural being sent to menace Lorne. And now he is this big, pony-sized teddy bear! I'm not sure what the author means with "...liked the deer and ponies too much" though, that requires a sturdy fence... Uhm... I hope Ghost just like to chase them, not eat them!

Joe Talon is the British version of the American's John Connolly supernatural crime fiction author with the same talent of weaving fact with fiction peppered with humour! What is there not to like? I also love the way this author takes familiar elements from different pantheons/cultures like angels from the Christian religion, djinn from the Islamic faith, and druids from the old European pagan mythology, into his fiction. He weaves a wonderful tapestry of familiar elements into a new and beautiful world!

The same wonderful story telling quality! Beautiful world building! Characters to love!

At this point I am now a die-hard fan of this series. So, this review might just be fan-girling! Still, it is never-the-less true that this book is a wonderful read!

Joe progresses Lorne, Ella and Heather’s stories masterfully in this recent release, “Bad Waters Run Deep”. They face more mysteries and dangers when Lorne and Heather get called to a wealthy boys' school by the head master who wants them to quickly dismiss the rumours that it is haunted following a tragic death. Ella makes an appearance along with the local DI. In typical Joe Talon fashion, the events are fast-paced and keep you engaged as you follow the characters from the mysteries of what is happening and who exactly is the "bad guy" to will they, or how will they, all get out of this one.

I love the diversity in Joe's books, the people in them are real world. From a lesbian vicar to someone who is working through mental health issues, someone putting behind a checkered past to reach for a new life, through spiritual questions and unknown experiences. Joe's characters are detailed, relatable and human. Watching Lorne deal with some aspects of his past and with Damien, his former military brother, felt realistic and a natural progression of his character. He has to come to grips with how much he has changed and how much Damien has & has not.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a perfect pre-Halloween read with the season's usual festivities and images adding to the atmosphere as I was reading it. Joe's writing seems to improve with each book, which I didn't think was possible. His development of minor characters as well as the main ones is superb. I liked seeing how Lorne's relationship with his djinn, Al-Ahmar, continues to develop and to hear more of Al-Ahmar's voice.

There aren’t rosey endings here but it isn’t a slaughter fest where the characters all get killed off for the sake of a gory blood bath. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a mystery that doesn’t have an easy or predictable ending. I can’t wait to see where Lorne finds himself in the next book and what human and supernatural foes he comes up against.

Joe Talon has a knack for taking old legends and turning them on their head.He adds his spin, flips them around and binds them together with a story that sucks you into their spirit world. Lorne Turner is retired from the military. Lorne is haunted with PTSD dreams and that's not all. Heather is haunted by her past.Ghost , their dog , is haunted by the dog he used to be. These three form a family that is also haunted by ghosts. Joe handles Lorne PTSD with respect, without pulling any punches. Lorne knows war is full of death and crimes. This isn't a cosy ghost story. It's a full out shivers down your spine, racing heart, and goosebumps on your skin ghost story. Anyone who enjoys mystery, supernatural, haunting stories is going to enjoy this book. Clear your schedule because you won't want to put this book down. As I told Joe after I finished it, I go out quite often all by myself in my kayak, away from everything and everyone, I really enjoyed it, but after reading this, not so much now. What was the shadow that you caught out of the corner of your eye, deep in the depths. This is story can be read as a stand alone, even though it's part of a series. You will probably want to go back and read Lorne's journey from the first book though. You will be hooked on this series. Looking forward to the next book in this series. Joe gets better with each novel he writes.

They thought the case was easy money…

During a terribly dry summer, Lorne and Heather are hired to prove that a private school is not being haunted by ghosts. Yet, what at first seemed like a simple, straightforward job takes an unexpected turn and they eventually realize they're not dealing with one angry entity but with two. Either of which would be more than happy to take their lives. Throw some unexpected family drama into the mix, and the burgeoning couple's lives become more chaotic than ever.

The novel has a great mix of locations, clashing belief systems, and the different ways those involved decide to deal with things they would very much prefer they'd never learned existed. So get ready for another fun, supernaturally charged thriller.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Bad Waters Run Deep, the fifth book in the Lorne Turner Supernatural Thrillers, is a well-written paranormal thriller. Heather may have talked Lorne into opening a new business, a psychic detective agency, but he is far from convinced that this is a good idea. When they end up at a boarding school, it is apparent that not all is well. Ancient deities, crusading knights, age old conflict, and, of course, ghosts with an agenda, this book has it all. I love the characters in this series. They are getting better with every book. The storyline and the vivid descriptions had me glued to my seat in this suspenseful and dramatic story. Joe Talon has done it again. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book should come with a warning - don't start just before bed or during school holidays with an 8yr old! Seriously, this is the best yet of this series and had me on tenterhooks till the end; I couldnt put it down. Lorne (reluctantly) accepts a job at a private boys school by Clatworthy Reservoir when the headmaster asks him to prove that the school isn't haunted. No spoilers but the story twists and turns from here taking the characters on a journey that tests their relationships more than ever with one that doesn't make it. I thoroughly enjoyed this latest adventure with the gang and can't wait for the next one

Book 239 - Joe Talon - Bad Waters Run Deep

Another terrifyingly brilliant book in the Lorne Turner paranormal series. It is change from the normal in that this time Turner and his ‘family’ are called to a private school to ‘debunk’ the ghostly going’s-on. It is like taking a sidestep into the 1950s at the school- from a principal taken straight from ‘Mallory Towers’ to a death that wouldn’t be out of place in a Christie’s Poirot.

There is little more disturbing than the death of a child and with the paranormal thrown it is taken to another level. Talon is brilliant at wringing the raw emotion and horror from our PTSD stricken ‘hero’ … Turner. At first it seems that it is all a wild goose chase…then the noises begin…the macabre phantoms are seen.

What is in the lake ? What horrific secrets does it hold ?

What I loved from Talon…an author I discovered on Twitter, was someone who gets PTSD…who understands how it breaks someone..again and again…turns them inside out at the drop of the hat and with no warning because everyone’s trigger is different …everyone’s straw that breaks their back can be light as a feather on another.

As for the climax… a battle across time with Lorne trying to be peacemaker…but can he keep his beast in check or will he be lost for a thousand years.

Outstanding writing.

This is book 5 in the series and is just as enjoyable as the others. Joe Talon has mastered the English language and can write like no one else I have read in years. He is so descriptive with the narrative that you are drawn right in with Lorne and friends investigate the mystery and evil surrounding the boarding school and the Clatworthy Reservoir. I highly recommend reading all four previous books in order.

I really enjoy the way these are written. There is no bias towards the different ways to think about "religion" so when you read this, you are hoping that everyone comes out alive and that one method is not going to overpower any of the others.
Supernatural and Christian beliefs clash here but one does not overpower the other.
Fantastic character development makes this book quick reading and you get to the end without knowing it is the end.

A haunting story. The author has a talent for drawing you in and holding your interest until the final page. Lorne and his friends investigate an English school and are unprepared for what they find. The suspense is heart pounding and the plot kept me captivated until the final page. I really enjoyed the dog, Ghost, and his gentle nature with Lorne. I received an advance copy of this book, and I am voluntarily leaving my review.

Book 5 the series, it helps to read the previous books to get a better insight into Lorne's character. Nonetheless, the book starts from page 1 as a plot-driven story. A use of the Ouija board, and Lorne is called to help. The story is busy, a lot of characters introduced and changes between reality and Lorne's nightmares.

An ancient god and an old knight give Lorne, Heather, and Ella a run for their money. They will need to dig deep to face the terrors thrown their way. I enjoy reading this series. I love the melding of religion, myth, psychic abilities, and military stoicism. It makes for a many faceted story. I loved it!

Lorne faces more impossible trials

Once again Joe Talon has created more wonderful characters to support Lorne, Heather and Ella. Deception and pain of hidden secrets are being used by an ancient being to fuel a need for revenge and control. I love that Joe Talon creates such strong female characters and men that are more than just action heroes. Roll on thee next episode!

Lorne's psychic ability always bring him into unforeseen situations. I believe this time might be the worst. All the regular characters are included in the book. His family actually are affected by the sinister spirit. Great read.

This was a great book. I’m enjoying the progression of the characters. Lorne is learning more about his abilities. I can’t wait to read the next book to see where the unit goes next.

The old and the new

It is a great blend of possible and real history with life today. The attitudes and differing beliefs and the good and bad that lives within.
It is a stand-alone novel, but I would seriously suggest reading the series to see the progression.

one of my top favorite series!

After reading thousands of books in almost every genre, this is one of my top series. I rank it with John Sanford, Robert Parker and John D MacDonald.

Good writing can make or break a story - there are plenty of examples of bad out there. This is NOT one of them. Joe Talon can really write a compelling story. Great heart, great descriptions are all in abundance and on display here as the continuing story of Lorne and his pals continues. (Not necessary to read in order, but might make it more fun!).
Joe has another "haunting" story for us all, this time at the posh boy's school and Lorne is not all that happy to be called up to assist, and then find more than was expected....go read them all!!!!
