The cruelest monsters always win.

I was born a human, but lived my life as a mutant, pulling shadows to hide myself. It was useful skill when you worked for the government as their top assassin, slaying the enemies of this world. Only what if I hadn’t been slaying the enemies and this entire time I’d worked for the wrong side of humanity?

Never once had I questioned my life, my job, the government, until they handed me a file with three marks, and I confidently set out to kill. But I hadn’t expected to be seen in the dark and captured by three ruthless and sexy mutants, who insist that I am the omega their hierarchy had been looking for. They were monsters. This I knew. Yet, the words they spoke raised questions and I, well, I needed answers.

With Warren, Ansel and Rex at my side, I was forced to look outside the prettily painted box the government had allowed its citizens to see, and into the chaotic mess of the mutant world as they fought for the survival of their people. We needed answers and the only way to get answers was to be the monsters they label us as. Ruthless. Conniving. Cruel.

It’s a cruel world out there, and the cruelest monsters always win.

***Umbra is book 1 in the With the Shadows Trilogy. It's a hot, dark, read set in an alternate time where a rare Omega gets to keep all her the smoking hot mutants. Due to some sensitive material it may be not be for everyone***

*I received an ARC for this book from the author.*
First, I really enjoyed this book! The FMC is strong, witty, and has a really cool super power. The men are intense, and I want more from them.
Umbra is about an assassin for the United Government, Thea. She is a badass mutant who uses her powers to kill people for the government who have committed crimes. But, on an assignment she meets her match in three hot mutants that are drawn to her, can see through her mutant power and want her. She is drawn to them in a way she never has been before and when they start to tell her that the United Government isn’t what and who she thinks they are, it sends her into a tailspin that turns her entire world upside down. Her 3 guys are there to help her realize what’s going on and to fight with her. The 3 main guys have a good balance between strong alpha, pushing boundaries, and sweet caring guy. RH, PNR, Hot alpha, spicy, touch her and die, enemy to lovers.

First off, I absolutely loved the meaning of the story title referring to the darkest part of a shadow. It fits Thea's character perfectly, as basically lives and hides in the shadows she surrounds herself with. They are her comfort zone, her best defense, and her best weapon, making her the top assassin that the Government has on their payroll. But there is one thing that Thea has that hasn't worked out so well for her: blind trust. Living on the streets after her mother was kidnapped, she had no mutant family to learn from, which ended up secluding her in the worst possible way and made her a target to be groomed by the Government. The Goverment put clothes on her back, trained her, and paid her money in order to live, so of course Thea thought they had her best interests at heart and wouldn't lie to her. She trusted them to not steer her wrong and that every hit she made for them was valid and important to the safety of everyone. But one wrong question to their beliefs and they make the quick decision to take her out of the picture. Joke's on them. They never should have underestimated someone they made to be the best at what she does, especially now that she has three powerful mutants on her side.

Warren, Ansel, and Rex, the mutants who immediately were infatuated with Thea, were pretty interesting and unique characters to get to know. Warren, although a dual mutant and alpha, was probably the most playful, flirty, and insane character, always coming onto Thea and making jokes. Ansel is a delta and is blind from his mutant genes that allow him to move around and locate things through echolocation. He may be blind, but he's probably the most dangerous of the group. Rex is the beta of the group, doesn't care for bloodshed, and has abilities similar to Thea in that he can blend into his surroundings to make himself unable to be seen. Think chameleon. Thea doesn't really know what to think of them, but the feelings and attraction is definitely there although she fights it at first. With her being an omega the pull will always be there no matter how hard she tries to stay away. She was made for them.

The way that the mutants were created was basically the Government playing God. And the funny thing is that once they did all of their experimenting, manipulating genes and abilities to see what they could create, they left their people behind, ostracizing them and treating them as a subpar being. What was fun and exciting before, changed when it was clear that mutants were something to be feared. The creator feared their own creation, and when something is feared, it's time to exterminate and remove the problem. However, Thea and her guys won't allow that to happen and I cannot wait to see what kind of plan they come up with to stop the Government from attempting to kill off more mutants.

Dude! I abso-freaking-lutely loved Umbra. Delilah hit it out of the park with this dystopian omegaverse. The strong characters, the world-building, and high action, all added to a fantastic plot.

Thea is a government-sanctioned assassin and is darn good at her job. She takes pride in her work, protecting the innocent while doling out justice and serving her government. Thea is a true loner, she doesn't people on any level except for work. Life was hard for Thea, being a mutant with powers and having trauma that happened in her childhood would put anyone off but I love her boss-lady attitude and that she has the skills to back up the sassy. I liked Thea, a lot, she just annoyed the heck out of me when she's given proof about the government she works for and she just refuses to see it.

This is a multiple perspective rh, the other perspectives are obvious Thea's love interests, and they are a delight and a little obsessive. Warren is the alpha of the trio, he has big daddy energy and is also a little crazy. He and Thea have combustive personalities so when they are together it's all passion, either physical or argumentative. However, Warren is all gooey for Thea and very protective of her. The same goes for Ansel, who's a strong fighter but kinda laid-back and Rex who is basically a cinnamon roll who I would love to protect, the man had me from the moment he appeared. They are all sweet to those who mean something to them but also absolute savage to their enemies and completely devoted to Thea. I love it.

Delilah really brought the creativity with this book. A dystopian omegaverse with mutants, government conspiracy, unique shifters, a wide range of powers, high action (towards the end), undeniable chemistry between characters, and so much more. This is a brand new world and the mutants don't quite understand everything about themselves, they are on a journey not just for equality with the humans who shunned their creations but on a journey of self-discovery as well.

Umbra is the first book in the Within the Shadows series and I'm dying for more. I have a few questions and of course, Delilah left us on a cliffhanger that has my jaw-dropping and asking wtf is gonna happen next. Up next is Blaze and I can't even guess how that book is gonna go but I'm ready for it.

I was blown away by this book! Umbra is a dystopian omegaverse, with amazing world building, action, strong characters and a wonderful plot.

In this universe, there's a 'United Government' that our FMC Umbra is an assassin for. Umbra is a mutant who uses her powers to 'unalive' people that have committed crimes. All for the government. On one of her assignments, she finally meets her match in 3 men who she's automatically drawn to in a way she never has been before. They inform her that the United Government isn't as it appears to be, and they aren't the people she thinks they are. The 3 men who've caught her eye AND turned her world upside down are Warren, Ansel and Rex.

Umbra doesn't take the proof at face value and has a hard time coming around to what the men have informed her of. Luckily in this multi POV, we also get to see what the guys inner monologues are, and how they see Umbra. I honestly think Rex is my favorite, he's such a cinnamon roll and needs to be protected at all costs. Warren and his BDE, is a bit crazy, he and Thea butt heads a LOT since they're so similar personality wise. But, he's also protective of her which, we all want. Ansel is a fighter, but also a bit laid back, if that makes any sense. They're all devoted to Thea, and savage to anyone else.

I haven't read a dystopian omegaverse quite like Umbra and I loved it! Between mutants, government conspiracy, powers, action and unique shifters, this book is SO different! I liked this world, it was so different and Delilah really draws you into it and you're on the journey with the characters!

I am itching for more, from Delilah, this story isn't finished and it was a wtf-ness type of cliff hanger. I can't wait to see where their story is taken, I know we're in for a wild ride.

Mutant Alpha, Beta, Delta and Omega

This book put an interesting spin on omegas, alphas, betas, and deltas. I have read some omegaverses in the past but I liked this concept.

Thea is a trained assassin that works for the government. She is giving assignments and is told the crimes prior to execution otherwise she won’t make the kill. She receives orders to take out three men. She is suspicious the moment she reads their file. Their crimes weren’t included and she had never had to take on more than one person on a job. She tells them no until she knows their crimes. The government finally gives her a list and their crimes do not match the file which makes her even more suspicious. She tracks them down and is heading into a building for the kills when something happens that neither of them expects….. I will let you read the book to find out the nitty gritty details.

This book was really good. You are told a story about a true bad girl FMC who is violent and sensitive at the same time. You are also given men that are mouth watering sexy and possessive. Enjoy!

Wow

I loved the dif povs, the reader gets intimate knowledge of each main character. I wasn’t a huge fan of the first chapter. Even as the scene reads out, something felt wrong which made the description even harder to process. The fmc is in denial, because if it’s all true, she’s the true monster. It takes a while to process and accept but she eventually gets over it. I liked reading her surprised emotions when something touching happened to her, she’s usually a stabby bada$$. The sex scenes were hot, and at the perfect length. There’s a lot of fighting scenes, and there’s truly the perfect balance of povs, it made it much clearer for the reader to understand why they act the way they do. I loved it. Can’t wait to read the next one!

I would rate this whole series a 2.5 rounded to a 3. I liked this first book well enough but there's a few things that annoyed me. First the author really needs to edit all three books but especially the third one because it had some really odd mistakes that weren't caught like for example "forced him to lose unconsciousness." Umm I don't think I need to tell you what errors in that lol. Secondly the timing is weird and not ever mentioned like here in the first book she'd(the fmc) just met them the day before but then in the next few sentences she's known them a week or so. Thirdly and finally WE NEVER GET A DISCRIPTION OF THE MMC. Seriously I knew what a side character looked like but was never what the actual mmc looked like. Idk it was ok but it needs work.

I loved, loved loved this book!!! This is an omegaverse story, but it's not the main focus and I feel anyone would love it even if you aren't typically a fan. Ever wonder what could happen if we started messing with DNA? Some amazingly hot and wonderfully unique mutants, that's what. The mfc is fierce and managed to stay strong as her entire world is turned upsidedown. There is plenty of action, excellent world building and jus the right amount of steam.

I don’t know if I have ever read a book quite Ike this before! It’s a different time and there are Alphas, betas, deltas, and omegas. This was a great spin on omegaverse and I loved the way that the world built!

The fmc Thea is a badass through and through and really fights feelings in the beginning when meeting Warren, Ansel, and Rex. They are all very different but have Thea in common!

Highly recommend! Great great read! Can’t wait for more!

Dnf 9%. Sorry, but I just can't. The story may have had potential, but I couldn't get past the writing. The book started with distracting shifts in verb tense, and went on to repeatedly use the word "mutiny" to mean the state of being a mutant. The MC's cynicism combined with the writing style made the narration feel like the voice-over in a black and white movie about a private detective (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.ph...), and I couldn't take it seriously.

Thea is under the impression she is working for the good guys until three men change her view on the subject. Warren is an asshole even when he is trying to be romantic. Ansel is deceptively dangerous. Rex might look intimidating with scales but is a cinnamon roll! After the ending of this book I can not wait for book 2!

I enjoyed the fast paced, government conspiracy, us-against-them style of this first book in the new With the Shadows series.

Our main characters are likeable, flawed and they gelled well together. Sometimes they gelled SO well, I was getting hot under the covers if ya know what I mean...cough cough.

This book leaves its reader on a delicious cliffhanger!

Thea is a strong, kick @** character. I loved the interactions between her and her men along with the wit in the dialogue. With Thea's men you have the alphahole, cinnamon roll and the in-between. You get the best of all worlds. It is a very intriguing and entertaining first book in this new series. I am so excited for book 2!

I swear some people just have no consideration for others.

I thought this was a fresh idea that was executed well. I love the idea of monsters hunting monsters. Throw in a bunch of secrets and you've got an action packed story. The cliffhanger ending made me scream at my kindle but I am super curious to see how the story is going to play out. So many theories right now! Overall a good read.

Mutants, betrayal, lies and omegaverse
What a combination in one book! The snark between Warren and Thea is wonderful, the attack while knotted made me laugh out loud. And the ending, omg!

I really enjoyed this unique spin on a A/B/O dynamic omegaverse. Thea is a trained assassin tasked with taking out three targets whose crimes don't match up to what the government is saying. I can't wait to read the next book!
