The Oregon Territory, October 1850: After nearly a year of living out of a covered wagon, day after day of grueling work and heart-breaking tragedy, Caroline Harper has finally reached the Oregon Territory where her new life will begin. She thought she had given all she had to give; she thought she had become the strong woman the frontier requires. But every day brings a new challenge for the settlers. When unexpected obstacles appear that keep her from getting married, from finally finding her security, Caroline learns that becoming the woman she needs to be will be far more difficult than she had realized. Can Caroline find her new path or will this journey be the end of everything she thought she had achieved? For all the stories of how these brave pioneers got to Oregon, look for the book series Courage on the Oregon Trail by A.T. Butler.
It's nice to be able to see what follows when they arrive in Oregon. I was disappointed however at the way Caroline cowered to June Mills, at the way June Mills treated Caroline and that Daniel didn't stand up for Caroline immediately!
Building New Lives a the End of the Oregon Trail This is the first book in a spin-off series about traveling the Oregon Trail, and now, making a home at the end of all of that exhausting travel. While things are much easier, life is still exhausting. The troop creates a town and all that it means. They build a church, store, blacksmith's shop, and decide on farmsteads. Each family needs to build at least a small house to be able to make it through the winter. Plus, All sorts of provisions to survive on now, and they survive through the winter. And then there are all of the budding romances...
This was an excellent sequel. My heart sank as Caroline struggled to gain the approval of her future mother in law. Honestly it was hard to read how Mrs. Mills so cruelly criticized Caroline, and the unsureness of when her own married life with Daniel would begin was quite concerning. However, just as in the previous story, Caroline was determined to rise despite the obstacles she faced. Her efforts to be useful and industrious are worthy of imitation. In addition to that, Caroline's focusing on being a support and friend to others rather than on her own challenges is truly inspiring.
I have read The Courage Series of people from different places in the east come together and form a Wagon Train for the long journey that they took on the Oregon Trail. I learned about these different families and the arduous journey they had. I am delighted to know now how some of these characters of some of these families settle in their newly Founded town in Oregon. I am looking forward to the next in this series to see how things came together and still the struggle to build houses and begin a town with others characters I have grown to love.
Riveting, life in a new setting! New challenges, new trials! Living out of a wagon, cooking over an open fire. If you have camped you have some idea but if you have never been in the Great Northwest in fall and early winter you really don't. The cold rain just seems never to stop, go find more wood, hunt for your food, the damp on your blankets. Add the human interactions and this is truly an amazing series to experience!
If I could give this review a 3.5 I would. It was very slow in the beginning and middle. The end however was filled with lots of situations that made the book interesting and exciting. I’m glad I waited until the end and didn’t give up on it. I am now looking forward to going back to the wagon trail and reading the other stories in that series. I’m sure when I’m done I will return to this series about their lives in the Oregon territory!
Caroline and Daniel finally get married. Mrs. Mills is a hard woman with a sense she and her family are above their fellow wagon train members. Caroline and Mrs. Mills make peace. This book is the companion to Courage on the Oregon trail. That book is full of the tragedies, hardships, and obstacles pioneers faced, as the west is settled.
The frontier travellers arrive in the garden of Eden and many more months of toil and hardship continue but gradually they build their community and their new lives begin. As we know from other frontier stories it will not be all sweetness and light. Life was hard in those times.
This book gives you all the feels. I went from sad to mad to happy in the course of an hour. The author really makes you feel like you personally know the characters and you root for them until the end.
This series was so intriguing to me. I have to say the map helped at the back of the book to see the distance. But the building of a town and new homes had to be a lot of work for men to get done quickly. Good story telling and I enjoyed this book
As the rest of the books this one kept you wanting to keep reading. Settling increases Oregon finally and having community help and togetherness makes me wish I was in that time. Hard times and all, appreciate the more important things in life
This is my first time reading this author. The book was not at all to my liking or what I expected. There was too much politics and too many clashing personalities. Many thoughts were repeated over and over, as if I had not heard them the first, second or third time.
This series was the best stories I have read about the journey to Oregon. The trip and finally getting to Oregon and then to be able to read what it took to get settled. Can't wait to read more about these courageous families.
Journeys End is about looking back at all the difficulties the people have suffered through and survived. Their faith in Gods help stands out as how faith can get you through almost everything.
It was okay. Obviously, more people liked It better than me. I have started another book in the series to see if it was just this one that didn't work as well. A 3.5 rating that I just can't upgrade to 4 stars.
i am an avid reader and read a variety of books. I managed to read a little more than half of this book. Despite it being a well written story, it was such a depressing story that I could not bring myself to finish it.
I really enjoyed this book. The only reason its not a 5-star rating is that there is that little something that would have made it a page-turner. I was able to set it aside and do other things before picking it back up.
The saga of this woman had a lot of surprises. The up and down emotions of every situation kept me reading and wondering what would happen next. I enjoyed reading this story.
The story was very near to real life when it talked about the mother-in-law. That's kinda the normal way of things. Mother of the groom are always judging the new bride. Sometimes it never stops.
I truly liked the book and I know that others will as well. There is a lot of ups and downs in Caroline's and Daniels relationship; but therei is also a story about young love.
I was sure Caroline was going to find another love because Daniel sure didn’t seem like he cared. But she held on and in the end seemed happy but I have my doubts.
The creation of the world the pioneers lived in immediately after arriving in Oregon was satisfying. The storyline was frustrating, with the heroine’s constant frustrations.
Loved the description of the journey. Carolyn learned many new skills. Hope her hunting skills are honed in, and she gets better. Can't wait for the next book.
