Ruby Dixon is an author of Science Fiction Romance. She likes fated mates, baby-filled epilogues, and cinnamon roll heroes. She also likes to write biographies of herself in the third person, because it feels more important that way.

Ruby also loves coffee and dirty books and will probably be a cat lady at some point. :)

A space odyssey!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💙🤎🖤💜❤️
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘📔
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌍🌎
Character development: 😠😘🤓😍🥰
Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The Heroes: Lord Straik - he is a space pirate, along with the Va Sithai brothers from the first few books. However, when they come across the Bouyant Star, a large commercial vessel that Straik’s family owns, which had been lost in space, he finds that the Star did not contain silks and spices like he had been told, but his family had been involved in the slave trade. He is so distraught, that he gets back aboard their pirate ship, The Darkened Eye, which was bought with his family’s wealth and goes off to find out what other secrets his family has kept from him.

The heroine: Ruth - when she was awoken from stasis on the Bouyant Star to find that she had been stolen from Earth to never return and was to be sold as a slave. All she feels is rage. So when they are boarded by space pirates, she in turn boards their ship to see what she can find. When she finds that Straik has come back aboard and taken off, Ruth hides in the ducts and her rage grows.

The Story: Straik is off in his own head and feeling gloomy because of his family, he is disturbed by the A’ani crew who seem to be bothered with something. Though the only thing they will tell him is that some food is missing. He tells them not to worry about it, that they have plenty of food to go around.

Though the crew says they are also worried about the fact that Straik left the rest of the corsairs behind on the bouyant star which isn’t a functioning vessel. Though the human females had been fine on the ship for years before they were found, so Straik knew that they would be fine until he returned for them.

This is a good story from the start. Ruth thinks Straik is a spoiled sulky brat, which he is. Straik is so upset about what he found out about his family that he just sits around and broods for days. Ruth has made friends with Dopek, one of the A’ani crew who help her hide away when he found her. I love that when Straik finds Ruth taking a bath in his tub, instead of being fearful, she gives him a piece of her mind.

This story is told in dual points of view via dual narration. The narrators are Mason Lloyd and Hollie Jackson who do the narration for most of Ruby Dixon’s books and do a great job as always. I like this Corsairs series because most of them take place on spaceships and I like the high tech world of a spaceship more than a primitive alien world. They faced a number of obstacles and go to a few different places on their journey and I really enjoyed this one!

3.5 stars - as is usually true of books that start their lives as serials on RD FB, I do think this is a bit bloated. That said, when I like the characters, that's probably not the worse flaw a book could have! :) I am LOVING how all of the different books in the Risdaverse are becoming more and more intertwined in this arc of macro plot regarding the clones. We first got some hints of this in Ice Home, and I've loved seeing that develop more over recent books. I also really like Ruth & Straik together- their dynamic reminded me a lot of BEAUTY AND THE BILLIONAIRE, which was the first book that made me a die hard Ruby Dixon fan (though that was under a different pen name). The virgin hero is a trope a love, and I also loved that he turned out to be a pouty emo boy with a heart of gold

It was only recently that I came to know that quite a lot of RD's fans have been reading this on her Facebook as updated serial episodes. I don't have an account on there but I'm glad at the same time to have read this in one sitting, especially since I get super cranky waiting for updates. Or life happens.
I'd rather wait it out until the whole thing is done & complete before pouncing on it.

I actually expected Helen & Mathiras to be featured in Corsair Brothers, #3 since..well..the series has “brothers” in the title but I guess Straik ending up as Jade and Alice's brother-in-law works out too.

When I read Adiron's book, the way Straik was described made me imagine him as some sort of a hermit Batman who donned himself in black clothes to blend in, keeping a watch on everyone from the corner of the room.

He actually made me feel skittish, but the Straik I got here was a treat.

• Alien x Human..? (read to find out more!)
• Slow-burn.
• Full-length.
• Overlaps with Corsair Brothers #1 & #2.
• Has a HEA but has to be read as a part of the series.
• Bold heroine who takes no shit from anyone.
• Kindle Unlimited.
• Bonus : Tour of the galaxy.

I still can't get over the fact that these books are full-length. They're a steal!

This review was originally posted on Books of My Heart

Review copy was received from Publisher. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Straik is having a bad time.  There is a stowaway on his ship, his crew has lost confidence in him and might be planning a mutiny and he just found out his family are slavers and there is a ship with hundreds of abducted humans and clones   Who can blame him that he panicked and abandoned the ship and some of his occupants while he figured out what to do?  In the third book of the Corsair Brothers series we learn that maybe Staik isn't really a bad guy, he just did the wrong thing in the moment so he could do the right thing down the road.

Ruth was spying on Straik's ship when it left her friends on an abandoned cargo ship.  Now she is hiding in the vents, sabotaging Straik's clothing and making friends with a few of the crew.  She will have her vengeance on this male who abandoned her friends.  That is until he finds her in his tub and Ruth eventually figures out that maybe she can get what she really wants if she seduces him.  Well game on, two can play at that and we will see who falls first.

I always have fun with any of Ruby Dixon's series featuring big blue aliens and the humans they fall in love with.  Who knew that blue aliens were my special kind of kink.  They have been great stories full of fun plots and hot sexy times.  Straik's book was no exception to that.  He is a broken hero, unloved by all of his family and left alone for so long he has no idea to do with a woman who genuinely sees him and cares about him.  It has to be too good to be true.  He and Ruth will need to outmaneuver bounty hunters sent by his mother, find somewhere to rehome a bunch of clones and humans and figure out this new relationship of theirs.

This series has had great individual stories for all the couples that are wrapping up to solve who is doing illegal cloning and how is Straik's mother and the rest of his family involved.  In the final book for this series specifically we will be able to figure it all out.  Each individual story can be read alone but there is a lot to be said for going in order to get the magic of all of the couples and enjoying the world Ruby Dixon has built.

Narration:
Holly Jackson and Mason Lloyd are really fantastic narrators and do the entire series justice.  They have been great at all of the Ruby Dixon books they’ve narrated together.  Holly Jackson does great with the human female PoVs, bringing their character to life.  I have enjoyed how Mason Lloyd has performed all of the big blue alien heart throbs in this series along with the others by Ruby Dixon.  I was able to listen at my usual 1.5x speed.

Read as an audiobook. This might be my favorite of the series so far. I really liked Ruth and how unreserved she was. Straik was a funny character and their banter was cute. Again I think this book was way too long and I have no idea how RD pumps out so many books when she’s making them this long unnecessarily lol I did enjoy seeing somewhere beautiful and vacation-y in this book. Space seems like a shithole from the ice planets, boring farm planets and grungy stations, etc Ruby normally writes about (no offense to the IPB/IH characters but that planet doesn’t seem fun 🙃) so a beach vacay spot was an unexpected treat. Im also looking forward to finally getting Helen’s book. I love a clueless and overly enthusiastic heroine and I think she’ll be fun to read about.

Stuck at 59% (and probably not going anywhere).

******WARNING: SPOILERY RANT AHEAD******

Honestly, this book made me sad. I started reading it expecting a sweet, funny, kinda quirky romance (with some sexy aliens), but what I got was abuse with a sprinkle of torture.
As an aside note, I know some authors struggle with TW vs spoilers, but, dear Ruby, if you're going to outline TWs at the beginning of the book, please make sure you get them all.
I read the TWs and was like: 'oh, cool. Let's do this!'
A few chapters in and BAM!
Heroine is captured, chained naked to a bed, and tortured. Oh, let's not forget she already had severe trauma from past sexual abuse by the hands of other aliens, so chaining her naked to his bed was just... yeah, not great.
I know some people struggle with the concept of torture in fiction, but come on! Chaining a naked woman to your bed, depriving her of food and water, and lowering the temperature until she's freezing is torture, there's no way around it. I know Americans call this "advanced interrogation techniques", but it's torture.
Oh, and when he imprisons someone else, I think he mentions doing this to his other captives as well, so the Hero in this here book is a serial torturer. Cool. Cool, cool, cool.
I've nothing against an antihero or even a villain as a love interest, I'd just like to know what I'm getting myself into before I start reading a book.

Also, the whole thing about him not knowing his family sells slaves for a living is a little farfetched and unrealistic seeing as he bought slaves and then "freed" them.
*sigh*
I just... I was expecting something else from this book. And the way their relationship develops feels so forced.
OH, and let's not forget the heroine outing one of the few gay characters in this universe! Granted, she does feel sort of bad about doing it afterwards, but she didn't need to do it at all. The guy was about to tell his captain the truth, why not let him speak for himself???
I'm pretty sure the author is straight, so I get how not so significant this moment might seem, but coming out is a big deal. Having someone else steal that from you SUCKS BALLS.

Idk if I'll go back and finish this one, it really disappointed me.

3 ½ stars.

➕ What I liked :

Interesting side characters.
(Dopekh +Salvotor and Ruthie+ Kazex.)

Interesting main characters.

Good chemistry.

Good romantic build up.

Good banter.

Funny parts with other characters and with the main characters.

Enemies to lovers.

That the hero redeemed himself.

The hero underwent character growth through the plot/story.
(Becomes a cinnamon roll hero.)

The heroine was strong and feisty without being cantankerous.

➖ What I disliked :

Somewhat verbose.

The end of the story dragged a little bit.

The book/story was a little bit too long.

Formulaic character description.

'I'm not responsible for the entire universe, but damn, I like to keep my corner of it tidy.'

description

Look, this had a lot of my fav tropes going for it but ultimately it kinda ruined the fun of those with the "bondage" thing where just keep someone tied up because . . . because?? No, thanks. Straik was fun, but also he isn't an actual corsair brother, now is he? Still, another fun installment in Ruby Dixon's alien universe and I'm really excited to see how the final(?) book plays out.

Lastly, a huge shout-out to finally there being some non-straight characters!! Especially since we'll be getting their stories in the future? A blessing.

What do you get when you mix a poor little rich boy whose just learned his family deals in human trafficking and an angry spitfire of a human woman who was a victim of said trafficking and now wants to F you up? … The joyride that is this book.

Similarly to previous books, the side characters (in this case, a crew of a'ani who have been freed by Straik but are all clones with the same face/genetic matter)provide the most comedic relief. There's a lot of angst between Straik andRuth… he's tortured by the wealth he never questioned and his family and hired crews actions; she's angry at past assault, abuse, and trauma. And him.  The two challenge each other and bring out the best and worst in each other.

It's fun to read them verbally sparring and slowly (unwillingly?) falling in love.

Quick(ish) Review

Originally published as a serial through Ruby’s Facebook group, the flow of the story is very much mini cliffhangers every chapter. Other than feeling a little longer than necessary, it worked for me. The Firsts were memorable, and while there’s references to sexual assault/rape, human trafficking and slavery, Ms. Dixon manages to keep it sweet and romantic at its core. Another winner and just sign me up for the next one!

“Because when I love, they don't love back," he whispers. "Because it's a weapon that can be used against me.”

I feel in love with Straik. He turned out to be the biggest marshmallow. With some sharp edges but still such a marshmallow. I’m so glad Ruth snuck onto his ship. These two were definitely enemies at first. Well she thought they were enemies. Poor Straik was just trying to solve a big problem and not get stabbed. I really enjoyed these two.

4 stars. Just finished the serialized version of this book (available on Facebook and her website for a few more days before it is officially released)… now I can’t wait until the final copy is on KU so I can read the epilogue. I do love that Ruby Dixon offers her readers the opportunity to enjoy a chapter a day, it’s a fun concept and has kept me hooked to this story for the past month. I didn’t start reading until about around 70 chapters were already released and really didn’t anticipate it going until chapter 97! I’m not the best at delayed gratification, but it was worth the wait.

So overall, I’m a little tired of Dixon’s IPB and Icehome series… but I absolutely love all of the spin-offs! The Corsairs and Risdaverse are the best, I absolutely can’t get enough.

This is book 3 of this new Corsairs series and probably my favorite thus far. I knew I was going to love Straik & Ruth’s story from the start, and it didn’t disappoint. Ruth is stranded on Straik’s ship when she tries to spy on him, they are separated from the group, and go on a intergalactic adventure together. So much happens in this book that I really never felt a moment of boredom while reading. This book deals with a lot of heavy topics, but in typical Ruby Dixon fashion, it doesn’t feel all that heavy while reading.

My last thought about this book is really about the next book. I thought that the new clone they found in book 2, Salvator, would have been the perfect match for Helen. I’m pretty bummed about the Helen & Mathiras matchup tbh, but I’m still looking forward to seeing what RD will do with their story.

Safety was good, hero is a virgin, heroine wasn’t (but her experiences were all against her will), some slightly silly OM drama at the beginning, no OW drama. TW: Heroine raped in the past (off page)

Another hilarious and entertaining Ruby Dixon!

This one is about Ruth and Straik. In the previous books in the series, Straik ends up abandoning the Corsair Brothers on a separate ship. But what he doesn't expect is a stowaway! Ruth snuck onto his ship before he left, and has been living in the air ducts for a few weeks. She has been screwing with this ship and making Straik think he is losing his mind. But then one day he finds her, and he is not happy about this little human who has been aggravating him to no end.

This was a delight to read! I love the banter and slow progression to love between Ruby and Straik.
It's one of my favorites in the series 100%!

TROPES: alien romance, captor-captive, great banter

This book was great and by far my favorite of Corsair Brothers series. All of the characters were awesome, and Ruth and Straik were great together. The romantic buildup and plot were really fun to read, although the very end dragged a tiny bit for me.

Again, too long. This book did not need to be this long.
I was interested and stayed till the end but my excitement significantly decreased mid way through the book.

Other than that, I liked Ruth and Straik. They were a bit too cheesy but eh, it wasn’t the worst thing.

Straik oh Straik

So, I quickly fell in love with Straik! He was a pretentious snob who was a Corsair. He pranced about his ship as royalty until he didn’t. Until you realized that he had real layers and then I was in love with him before Ruth. I absolutely love his character and how he developed and the more you get to know him. Ruth was a character right from the beginning! Her antics had me rolling. Loved all the friends we meet and the old ones we got to see again.

A lovely story. Straik is a touch- and love-starved only son of a sociopath abusive mother who never knew his father. Ruth was a human sex slave (off page, in the past). His mother only uses him for manipulation and her own gain, so he’s never known what it’s like to really be wanted by someone. They both help each other trust and heal.

I did notice this could have used better editing.

A SciFi Alien Serial Romance by Ruby Dixon is wow. Not sure what to say but Sci Fi, alien erotica. I like it. I like her writing.

Humans being abducted by aliens makes for an interesting read where there are mates and language barriers. It is fun and witty and at times heartbreaking, but it is certainly something different and I now find myself strangely addicted.
