Out of My Head

Rate this book
My dirty little secret is my brother’s best friend.

I’ve loved Jay Parker my entire life. And we’re ready to stop hiding our two-and-a-half-year relationship. Our only problem is that my family and the entire town we grew up in views us as siblings.

But we can’t hide our love forever. When Jay is honorably discharged from the Marine Corps to finally live our dream life together, life as we know it starts caving in. Unaligned dreams. Skeletons in the closet. Jay’s inevitable post-war identity crisis. And if that wasn’t enough, a strange man is following us and threatening my family.

Were we right to think love conquers all? Or will the realities of life tear us apart?

*Out of My Head is the first part in the Jay and Annie Duet.

Okay dang. This story was a whole lot of everything. It was soft and sweet with the love that exists between Jay and Annie. It was suspenseful with the mysterious jerk popping up all over and causing mayhem. It was heartbreaking and tragic with the losses that both Jay and Annie were facing. It was painful watching them finally get to be together only to have life keep trying to rip them apart.

I loved every second of this emotional journey!

I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review, I instead downloaded it with Kindle Unlimited so the author gets credit for the read and my review there can be verified.

I am keeping this book at a three-star because I don't really know how to feel about it. I can't tell if it is just a contemporary romance/military romance or if this truly is meant to be a thriller. As I like thrillers I'm not sure if I'm reading more into that than actually exists.

Pros:

As someone who has done long-distance dating with a military man the happy but nervous excitement of your guy coming home was captured perfectly. With the chapters from the man’s perspective I really feel like I am getting the secret story that some military men can’t or won’t share. This insight could be really helpful to those in that situation.

The author does an excellent job of covering the fears a person feels. From the worries of being the angry, abusive man your father was, worry that you could have addiction issues and putting yourself and everyone through torture so you don't find out, or even the fear that you don't truly know who you are or what you want and may have spent your life focused on something that can never be. I'm hoping when the series draws to a close she explores the happier and lighter emotions in a recovery period because there is a great talent for making emotion real in this writing.

Cons:

For me, it has felt a lot more like a telling than a showing book. This is perfectly okay and sometimes works better for different genres. I don’t usually read a lot of contemporary and this is my first military fiction so this might be a preference for the genre. I am more used to fantasy where things are described in detail and you learn someone is nervous from their racing heart and wet palms instead of hearing them think or say they are nervous. Not wrong or bad, just different.

In chapter 21 a character asks "When do the secrets stop?" I felt like that was the entire theme of the book and possibly the series. It leaves you with a sense that everyone is always hiding something, that you can trust no one and that like Dr. House always said on that television show "Everybody lies."

This book ends on a cliff-hanger and with a decidedly not happy ending.

This was an EASY 5⭐️ read for me! This book was fantastic!

I was hooked right from the beginning with this book! I knew right from the start that it was going to be a winner for me. I became so invested in Jay and Annie’s relationship and was rooting for them the whole time!

Not only did this book have amazing romance, and chemistry between the characters, but there was also suspense that kept me wanting to keep going to find out what was going to happen!

I loved the family/found family aspects of this story and how close all of the characters were. The steam was also really good! 🔥🔥

This is the 2nd book in the Sage Creek series, but the 1st book in the Annie and Jay duet. I am DYING for the next book and cannot wait to go back and read book one to see what happens with Annie’s sister!

If you like Romance, and Suspense, and Spice, then you definitely need to check this book out!!

After meeting Derek and Aria in book 1, I was super curious about the secret relationship between Aria’s sister and their brother’s best friend. The love between Annie and Jay is so real, I felt like I was reading about close friends. Dillon is masterful at connecting you to her complex characters, leaving you an emotional wreck only a few pages into the book.

The authenticity of Jay’s struggle with leaving the Marines and Annie’s journey of self discovery sets your emotions on a tilt-a-whirl, but the added suspense of secret threats, both outward and from within, spins you onto a crazy emotional roller coaster ride of angst and heartbreak.

The cliffhanger ending was superbly executed, making me wait with not-so-patient anticipation for the rest of Jay and Annie’s story!

The second book in the Sage Creek series, Out Of My Head did not disappoint. Annie and Jay are wonderful characters that you will fall in love with. If you love a brother's best friend trope, this one is a great one. Fromm the very beginning, I was hooked. The interaction between the characters as great, the storyline is solid, and the suspense is there. This book ends on a cliff hanger which I have mixed feelings on. I love it because it keeps you guessing and tell the next book, but I hate it because I really need to know now. I would highly recommend this book.

It felt like there were so many stories packed into one book, and it was a little all over the place and hard to keep up with. Lots of Yellowstone vibes with the added military aspect as well. Overall a good read, but I think it’s one where you’d definitely need to read the entire series to understand much. This book on its own is a 3 star for me, but maybe with the whole series it could be more?

I still love all the characters. I felt what the Mackenzie children and non biological children felt. I love that aspect of how it shows how you dont have to be blood related to be family. I did take off one star because u was a little confused at the beging, but once i got further in i figured it all out. This is a great series , and i cant wait to get my hands on the next book. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this arc. I will be get actual copies in near future...

WHERE DO I BEGIN. My entire world was just shook upside down. In the best way possible. But then also in the worst way.

Jay gets honorably discharged from the Marines and makes his way back home to Annabelle, his best friends sister who he’s been secretly dating for 2.5 years. They plan to tell their families (which, her family is also his family since they are so close).

That goes about as good as you would suspect. 😂

There is a suspense element to this (which relates back to book 1). You don’t need to read the first in the series (although I suggest you do, I loved it). But someone is out to get Annie and her sister (from the first book). Jay will stop at *nothing* to protect his girl.

5⭐️
2🌶️

I loved the back and forth between these two and watching their relationship grow. Jay gets hurt towards the end which kind of puts a wrench in their relationship. With that said, this doesn’t end in an HEA but book 3 is a continuation of their story (… and someone else).

I love Dillons story telling and the way she uses words to really paint the scene. Makes you feel like you’re there in Sage Creek.

I have some ARCs I need to finish up before I can start book 3 but man. I’m frothing at the mouth to read it. Even though I sent her threatening messages that I was mad at her. 🫶😜

3.5/5? It was good but I would say the first one was way more exciting, this one didn’t have the thrill to it. Jay gets out of the marine corps to be with Annie and they end up doing nothing but fighting. Annie revolves her life around Jay and ends up resenting him and Jay doesn’t know what to do with himself outside of the Corp. a guy is after the family because of Stephen McKenzie and Jay is adamant of stopping him but gets himself shot, and then decides him and Annie need to go their separate ways so she can find herself and be happy and he can hunt down these people before they hunt down his loved ones

Annabelle & Jay

The story is good, the suspense kept me reading, but the continuity issues almost made me quit.
I stuck it out and finished, but admittedly, I was bored. I might come back to read the next book in the series, but I need something more engaging first.

How far can a relationship go when there are past traumas, secrets, and love?

Out of My Head by Dillon Bancroft is the second in The Sage Creek Series and was very rooted in trauma, overcoming it, and coming together. Jay and Annie, secret lovers and admirers since childhood, can finally announce their relationship to the family since Jay is being discharged from the military. They know that once it’s out, some family members will lose their minds and it could cause tension in Jay’s friendships with the family. But, they also know they can’t keep hiding it and lying. Between the new normal of leaving the Marines, exposing their relationship, and impending danger around the corner, Annie and Jay have a lot to deal with in their relationship. How far can they go before being stretched too far or will they find balance and become stronger?

I’m not usually into military romances. They usually have a bit too much for me to handle as this did, but under all of the turmoil was such a beautiful story. In life, people have to go through tough times like coal becoming a Diamond, so they can shine bright later. Growth comes from all situations, good and bad. Although at the time, the bad seems completely ridiculous and like it’ll never change or get better, but it can, just depends on whether the people are ready for it. This story expressed those ideals very well.

Additionally I loved their relationship (Jay and Annie). That forbidden love that’s been there since childhood but couldn’t be pursued unless in secret was so well out and made for a strong relationship. I liked that they were already together and didn’t have to go through the process of will they, won’t they. It was more of, how will they overcome this hurdle? It was a fresh take on relationships in romance novels, a first for me and I liked it.

There were lots of themes that popped up throughout the story, such as dealing with loss, ptsd, forgiveness, trauma, familial traumas, acceptance, transitioning to civilian life, and more! Although there were a lot of family members to keep up with and got a bit confusing sometimes, I really enjoyed the family dynamic that was established with the McKenzies and the two Parkers, Jo and Jay. Now let’s not forget the overarching suspenseful subplots that were just so intense and seemed to have bled from the past. Once again, I’m not much of a suspense romance reader but this caught my attention. I did have questions, but maybe reading the previous book would clarify them. With that said, this can easily be read as a stand-alone because it gives plenty of exposition to keep the reader on track.

If you’re into suspenseful military romances with some intense steaming hot interactions, this is for you. Keep in mind, there are lots of triggers throughout so only read if it will be okay for you.

This was really good, it had all the dept I’ve come to expect from a Dillon Bancroft book, with a cool mystery background plot and a great couple who have great, individual, journeys and stories.

My rate
⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5

I was not expecting all of this from this book, but it did not disappoint!
I loved the first book in this series, with all its romance and suspense and intensity, along with a good dose of heavy topics! But the author managed to match these elements while creating a completely new dynamic. This couple is very different from Aria and Derek, but they communicate the same level of dept the other couple did, they both have very personal journeys and inner struggles that were amazing to read, and this felt completely new, maintaining all the good stuff from book 1.
I also loved the interactions with not only the rest of the family but the whole small town. A really cool part of this couple’s dynamic is that they have known each other their entire lives, there is familiarity and inner jokes and shared experiences, that were related in the book in a very natural manner, where we didn’t feel lost, but we got all the information we needed and also the humor from the banter of a family.
For this book to be perfect, I would like a bit more from the mystery plot, I understand that it is a duet, and there is more to come, but I feel I didn’t get enough information or action to really understand or be engaged with that plot line.

Equality rate
⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5

The book didn’t get 5 equality stars because I felt that Jay could be a bit sexist at times (I honestly didn’t see much offense in “carrying the sandals”, women have done that for centuries). And their ability to solve conflict is extremely limited.
And last but not least, I loved the dept of Jay’s story, not only as an ex-military and all the trauma and confusion going back to civilization comes with, but also being an abuse survivor. Dillon does a great job at respectfully relating trauma, but showing us realities that, unfortunately, many people go through, so I love reading these perspectives.

Arc Review

Rate: 5
Spice: 3

Tropes: military romance, small town romance, brother’s best friend.

Review: Out of my head follows Jay Parker, who is a former victim of domestic abuse and he suffers from major PTSD from not only the horrors of his childhood and the gut-wrenching reality from what he witnessed while he was overseas. The FMC Annabelle McKenzie is one of my favorites because she reminds me of myself. Also, this Dominic Reese character definitely bas me wandering what’s to come through this series, because i need to know more about him. I can’t believe just towards the end you casually mention not only was he in a car accident but he was shot. LIKE WHAAAAT!?! Okay i’m not okay, why do you have to have them go separate ways for the time being. UGHHHHH, the amount of tears i’ve shed while reading this isn’t okay. You have officially shattered me and my emotional capacity. I need answers sooner rather than later. I NEED BOOK THREE LIKE YESTERDAY PLEASE!

Out of My Head by Dillion Bancroft is a beautiful story, and I'm so happy that I got the chance to read it! I absolutely loved how the book was set up, how the characters were portrayed, and how everything fell into place. Thank you so much for this amazing read, Dillion!

Annie and Jay were a fantastic couple! They were exactly right for each other, and they always knew it too. Both Annie and Jay have a unique past that brings them closer as one, and what a beautiful thing it was to read. I really admire Annie for helping Jay through everything he's been through as someone who just got out of the military and is experiencing some doubt about what is the next best move for him. Jay is also amazing when it comes to Annie and about how she has doubts herself, but he's right there next to her as she figures it out. This book was a fantastic read, and I cannot wait for you guys to meet Annie and Jay! Go read Out of My Head by Dillion Bancroft to meet these beauties.

Out of My Head by Dillon Bancroft is the Second book in the Sage Creek series. This book is part one of a duet thus ends with a awesome cliff hanger, Which im impatiently waiting! Dillon Bancroft has yet again penned a powerful and yet an emotional story between a strong woman and a man who was honourably discharged. These two were a fantastic couple, who supported and is just right for each other.
Annie and Jay have known each other for long years. He is her brother’s best friend. They have been dating secretly for the past few years so they need to come clean about their relationship once Jay is back home. It’s an interesting and intriguing read that keeps the pages turning, from the beginning, the story draws you in. Intense passion between the two main characters is super hot.

How they were able to keep their relationship and marriage a secret for years is beyond me. They were a couple in love but Jay went through a traumatic experience during his last deployment that changed him. As the wife of a veteran with PTSD, I've learned first hand that healing doesn't happen overnight. Annie felt like she lost sight of her own dreams because she held on to Jay too tightly.
Sometimes love doesn’t have a happy ending, that’s exactly where we’re left at the end of this book and that left me feeling so gutted I cried.
The author did warn of a cliffhanger, so I know their story isn’t over.
So much is going on and they’re still potential targets. For the sake of their relationship, "Whether it's two weeks from now or sixty years." they promise to find a way back to each other.

Let me preface by saying, THIS CLIFFHANGER KILLED ME. There was even a warning that it was book one, and all, but I was like “it’ll be fine”. I am not fine, this is not fine and I need the next book ASAP! I was given this book as an ARC for Romance Me With Books tour stop (I hope we get the next one too).

Remember a week ago when all I missed was Hallmark movie books?? Same. Here we are though with another one. This one would be on the Hallmark movie and mysteries channel though.

It’s not the first book in the series, and can be read as a stand-alone however once again, I will be going back. She was beautifully written and full of pleasant surprises. Also Jay is a great grumpy to Annabelle’s sunshine ☀️

Out of My Head by Author Dillon Bancroft is part one of a duet within a series. This small town, brothers' best friend, military romance has a lot to unpack. It's not always a smooth road on the way to that coveted HEA. Annie and Jay have both internal and external issues to deal with. Dillon pens the growing pains of their story with such down to earth realism that you understand where each of the characters are coming from. By the time that nasty ole cliffhanger comes around, your left hoping they find their way back to each other in part two. After all, love is supposed to conquer all...right?

Angsty and intense love story, full of tension, mysterious and melancholic subplots, and passionate steamy scenes. Explores deep issues such as PTSD, illness, and family secrets. Jay and Annie make a great couple, and are truly meant for each other. Fans of military romance and a small-town vibe with beautiful scenery and horses, look no further! There is a cliffhanger, which for some readers is strike against a book, so be ready for that going in! A dynamic cast of characters with complex relationships and history, in a sexy page-turning package. :)

Out of my head was a great read. Our power actually went out for the who whole night and I was able to read the whole book in one sitting.
I felt like I was a bit on an emotional rollercoaster. I love Annie and Jay and the story. I’ve been with my husband since I was 16, I can relate to that first love. My heart always has a soft spot for military stories. However that CLIFFHANGER 😱😱 I am going to need the next book ASAP!

What...What did I just read? I have been reading this book waiting for the ending to find this. Honestly, I am beyond words at how much this book broke my heart for every character. It is so hard sometimes to adjust to being fully with another person. I fell in love with the character development even if the book ends on a cliffhanger. Annie and Jay are two of the most realistic and stubborn people I have ever read.

I didn’t expect to like this book as much as I did!! Check TW and CW. Brothers best friend and military man is all the yummies lol. I loved how complicated Annie and Jay’s relationship is. They go through highs and lows but that ending. I cannot wait for the next book.
