Heart of Mira

Rate this book
Elizabeth Esper should not be able to throw a person across a library; even if they did joke about her dead parents. Her fingertips should not burn the things she's touching when she has a seizure. A bloody wound should not heal almost instantly, with hardly a trace of it ever happening. These are not normal sixteen-year-old experiences.

Moments after discovering the real power blooming inside her, Elizabeth and her best friend Heath are thrown from the familiarity of rural Vermont into the world of Mira, where magic is commonplace and wars have fractured the relations between humans and non-humans. As the first known arrivals from Earth in over half a century, Elizabeth and Heath must blend in at a prestigious academy of magic, straining to hide from the military force and a notorious Arc Knight hunting them down, but the academy's brutal combat teacher may be just as dangerous.

In their search for a way home, Elizabeth discovers more truths inside her than mere magic, and that the academy is hiding dark secrets of its own.

I really enjoyed this one. It starts off with Harry Potter in the later years vibes. Unexpected magic and a school to learn how to use it. The world building was nice and integrated into the story and there was plenty of action starting in chapter 1

I had a privilege of beta-reading this book, and can definitely recommend it to the fantasy genre lovers.
It builds a very detailed world - which is quite unique, not an average run-of-the-mill academy of magic. The book has much more than that: intrigues, plot twists, battles, an elaborate magic system, and strong characters. What's more, some of the plot lines are merely hinted at, leaving the readers eager to get their hands on the sequel in hopes of getting more answers.

I was a beta- reader for this marvelous fantasy book with a sci-fi feel. If you like traveling to other worlds and enjoy world building, this book is well written and is supposed to be the beginning of a series taking place in another world. With magic and non- traditional species of characters (no dwarves or elves here) the Heart of Mira is an engaging new read that I would recommend to young adult or fantasy readers!

Best fantasy I've read in ages.

There is much to love about this book and the magical world it's set in. Well written, well-paced, pure fantasy but not over the top or indulgent. I particularly liked the way magic is presented. I became very invested in the characters and the story, which builds in intensity and has all the mischievous adventurousness needed in a good YA. It was long but easy to get swept up in. I'm generally cautious about fantasy books but I genuinely enjoyed reading this.
