What's Inside:
RUIN MY LIPSTICK: A Poetry Collection: Poetry that takes the ordinary to the extraordinary, one verse at a time. Emotive. Romantic. Erotic. And everything in between. Poetry is what my soul bleeds when I'm not looking...
5 STAR REVIEWS for Ruin My Lipstick: "Ruin My Lipstick is a work of art." "Exquisite, raw emotion." "...have never been so moved so completely by poetry." "Makes you think and feel with every word." "It truly touches the soul." "A poet of great power."
ALMOST POETRY: From the author who brought you the highly received poetry collection, Ruin My Lipstick, comes something not quite like anything you’ve seen before. This artistically, intricately woven compilation brings you the poet’s musings, doodles, and sketches, and puts pages of her own personally inked journal into your own hands.
Intimate, vulnerable, and raw-- the r’s that look like scribbles or the i’s not fully dotted or the t’s not quite crossed-- these moments from the poet’s life will make you sigh, laugh out loud, shake your head in the affirmative, and look at love and nature and everything else you see and experience in the world around you through a new lens. It’s as much a visual feast for the eyes as it is for the thrum, flutter, and beat of the heart.
After all, writing is simply the stringing together of the best words in the best possible order. And sometimes, it’s almost poetry.
PRAISE FOR ALMOST POETRY: "Poetry needn’t always be long to grab hold of your mind and heart… its vibrancy can be found inside the shortest of poetic lines and verse." "I am convinced R.B. does in fact bleed poetry." "R.B. O'Brien makes you feel with every word written." "...powerful writing exploring all things." "This is how poetry should be."
A RED, RED ROSE: A Collection of Dark Poetry and Prose: It is often in the dark that we can see...
And sometimes, you must look at what isn't said, as much as what is, to see it.
R.B. O'Brien's latest collection of dark poetry and prose isn't your Robert Burns song about "luve." No. It's not that kind of a red, red rose. It's the kind that makes you think of a darker shade of red, perhaps the color of blood coursing just below the surface of your skin or through your veins, struggling to pump that blood to your heart. A rose littered with thorns to prick and cut into your darker psyche. The kind of rose to escape the pretty gardens and butterflies and yellow suns filling a canvas with only light. No. This red, red rose is the stuff only twisted fairy tales are made of.
As nuanced and textured as you may be used to from O'Brien, you've never seen her quite like this before. From bright-lit graves to black crosses on white churches, from mortal skulls to immortal ghosts, from sweet revenge to soured greed, and from love worth dying for (literally) to death most lively, turn off the lights and read only by candlelight. Who knows what you may see...
You might just see yourself.
WHAT PEOPLE HAVE SAID about A Red, Red Rose: "Deliciously sexy darkness!" "...will touch your soul." "Soulfully twisted... "A RED, RED ROSE is a beautifully rich, powerful, and feminine statement....to overcome what pains us and to face our fears head on to find our light."
R.B. O’Brien has always been drawn to the more taboo side of storytelling, even as a young adult, from hiding books from strict Catholic parents as a teen to getting lost in the erotic sections of bookstores for hours.
She is best known for her three published erotic romances, Thorne, Edge of Torment and Imogen. But she is now forging a name for herself in the New Adult Romance category as well as poetry, her true passion, Ruin My Lipstick her first of many to come.
Much of O'Brien's work explores the darker, sensual nature of relationships, those riddled with the reality of insecurities and human folly, often exposing the vulnerability, emotional turmoil, and occasional pain that can come from losing oneself in the heat of passion and the obstacles of love.
O'Brien holds a degree in English literature and teaches for a living in the Northeast, USA. She is the founding member of The Nu Romantics, a poet, a professor, a writer, a dancer, and a hopeful romantic known for her poetry prompts on social media. O’Brien also has a profound affection for Shakespeare and beyond that, writes. Every chance she gets.
I have read these books individually some time ago and loved them. Now reading them again, nothing changed my mind. They are still great poems and I love RB O' Brain even more. My most favorite books are Almost Poetry and Red, Red Rose. I love the "half" poetry in almost poetry because the are almost like promos to a flaw fiction or short story or even a novel. Red, Red Rose is a dark book but still very good. I loved the flash fiction. The author is in my top 2 favorite list for poetry.
Its a must read!!
I received the book for free and voluntary writing a review
Author R.B. O'Brien brings us three of her poetry books together into one collection.
Ruin my Lipstick: Author R.B. O'Brien has topped herself with this poetry collection which gives us feelings from love to lust to possibilities. She makes you think and feel with every word on every page, this is a collection that can not be missed. I highly recommend it to everyone.
Almost Poetry: Author R.B. O'Brien brings us a collection of short poems that strike at your heart. She has a way with words that make you feel everything from love to lust to sadness. The poems within the 95 pages of this book are so potent that you can't help but want to best for her and as a reader it really makes you think. Some of them would be great to say to the person that you love. I highly recommend this Almost Poetry book and her previous Run my lipstick poetry book too.
A Red, Red Rose: Author R.B. O'Brien brings us a dark look into the human soul with A Red, Red Rose. This book has dark poems and prose stories that will chill you to bone. One of the ones that stood out for me was one where a little girl had meet a friend in a playground and was given a doll that looked like her. The doll though was beaten up and on her way back to her mother the little girl fell and was sliced open in some areas and her eye was out of its socket. Then near the end of the book there's one about an actress who was posing for photos for a gig in a movie that she had landed the lead in and when the photographer left she had to deal with the dead body of the actress whom she took over the part from. Then at near close to the end the last prose was that of a girl who would tell herself that she would get on the train tomorrow and she is then hit by a car. Then her day repeats. This collection is worth every penny and I highly recommend it to all horror fans and those that like the macabre.
Needless to say I highly recommend this collection for all poetry, love and horror fans.
A collection of poems from three previously released books, all here for my enjoyment, and enjoy I did. It was nice to revisit some of these all in one volume.
Ruin My Lipstick
Poems about love in as many different ways as life itself: sensuous, needy, wonderful. Poems about life that are interesting. Haiku too.
“Not Like The Rest”, “Dipped”, and “The Campfire” are some of my favorite poems in this book. These just made me want to read them again and sigh. “Devil’s Breath” was very intriguing . I read it over and over. Great!
Almost Poetry
Poetic ramblings that are short little sentences, except when they aren’t. Fonts and placement used effectively. There are even photos of the written words on paper. Special! It all adds up to thoughtful, sigh provoking, emotional words. I found myself enjoying these. Bravo!
Red, Red Rose
This is a collection of darker writing. Definitely not feel good odes to love, more like nightmares, horror, and death. I found these poems delightfully creepy, sinister, disturbing. There is even a few macabre short, short stories like “Creak”, “Please,Lord”, “Believe”, or “Clowns”. My favorites in this collection are “Gravesite”, “Each Vein”, “Your Last Meal” (I really liked this one).
