Technical problems make it hard to read

The formatting of the book is too distracting to make for a comfortable read. The author double spaced between every single paragraph, except when they intermittently single spaced. Sometimes the double-spacing was between action descriptions, sometimes between bits of dialogue, but there was no consistency. I sincerely wish that the author would go back and reformat the book to be more in line with standard protocols, as I truly cannot comment on the content of the book because I could not connect with any of it.

For example:

“…I wish you could have spent more time with us.”

Nancy nodded.

Her mother replied…

It was a bit maddening and I highly caution anyone from purchasing the book without looking at a sample first.

Good Story Ruined

Oh what a difference research and study of the period would have made to this story.
The author’s writing is simplistic which in itself is not a problem, but married with the appalling mistakes, errors, and inaccuracies, it is just too much.
From a very long list these are just two of the whopping errors -
naming a child Hank and holding a baby shower.
What is sad is that the core elements of the story are good, but ruined by the Americanisms and lack of knowledge of the period.
Read - but be warned.

2.5 stars. It’s an odd format. The first half is her life slowly falling apart, then he proposes (after meeting her twice), and the second half is them slowing falling in love. Very slowly. EXCRUCIATINGLY slowly.

My first from this author, and my first “clean” romance as well. The ebook formatting is a little distracting and the writing style isn’t especially my taste, but after I got into the plot it was a very sweet story that made me smile and a very quick read.

It was a good story but I feel like it needed more editing. There are numerous mistakes and the double spacing was unnecessary.

Miss Rowena Whitworth must find a husband because her father has spent the family into dire straits. Unfortunately, her father accepts money from a much older man looking for a broodmare.

When Andrew Elton—Baron Elsbrook -- overhears the arrangement, he is horrified for Rowena.
His mother is nagging him to marry, and she has chosen his mate, a vapid young miss. Instead, he offers Rowena a marriage of convenience because he does not want to have children (his father was a terrible parent who used his children for his aims).

This was a great story until near the end. Suddenly, Rowena's father apologized for trying to sell his daughter and even began to work toward recovering his estate and livelihood. This was so out of character. Later, Andrew's mother did an about-face (she swore she would never accept Rowena as her daughter-in-law). This was more realistic because hostile parents often change their minds after there is news of a baby.

Rowena, a spinster has been informed by her father that she needs to attend the Season and snag a rich man because the family finances are in trouble due to father’s gambling and drinking. Rowena is devastated since she was part of a scandal that ruined any prospects in her first season and the ton has a long memory! Andrew is a baron who has no desire to ever marry and produce an heir due to his father’s lack of love and involvement in any of his family. But Andrew’s mother has other plans for him demanding Andrew attends the Season and find a wife, and she has picked out the perfect one for him. Andrew outsmarts his mother and makes an arrangement with Rowena after he overheard her father trying to marry her off for financial gain. I loved how Andrew puts his mother in her place and decides his and Rowena’s future. A great story of love. I received a free copy for my honest and voluntary review.

A woman has only her reputation in the ton. Once it is ruined whether through her actions or not, she is deemed unmarriable. No man worth his salt will want her and certainly not a peer. Rowenas reputation was ruined when a gentleman broke his betrothal to her. She had been a pawn in his game. He never meant to marry. Now four years later her father had gambled and drank away his fortune. Rowena must marry and marry wealthy to save her family.
Robert was getting pressure from his mother to marry. She had selected the best debutantees of the season. Having met his mothers favorite several times, Robert decided not to consider the brainless girl.He wouldn't be like his cold father. He would have a marriage of convenience.

Sometimes love sneaks up and gets you.
When things went so badly in her first season and the Ton believing she was ruin our heroine is reluctant to face the marriage mart again but some years later her father is forcing her too. If this does not end in a suitable marriage offer he has plans. Our hero has his own problems with a pushy mother. It is amazing that these two characters survived their parents. Thank heavens Rowena has her mother and sisters and Andrew has his sister and brother in-law. I loved seeing them grow together and I found how Andrew got his way with Rowena’s father brilliant. It is a very good story and I am happy to recommend.

So it was hard to get started though the story got better as it progressed. It was very clichéd which isn't always bad but in this case was a bit boring due to it. It felt as though it was missing a few chapters in the beginning, even something that could have given her disgrace that was only really hinted at. I was annoyed when the ending just had everyone magically forgive all the wrong of the story, from the dad just seemly sober overnight to the grandmother being the perfect mother-in-law with no issue.

So in essence, I felt the beginning was missing something and the ending was a rush of forced happy ending.

Not as I expected.

I was expecting a very different story . I'm happy to announce what a delight this has been. I have read books by Sally Forbes before which turned out very pleasant. This story too was enjoyable. I am surprised with added information concerning what the English put so much emphasis on. Those poor women. Anything could turn society against you. You would forever not be welcome in society for balls, or any other activities. I did enjoy this book and recommend it to those who enjoy English traditions from one hundred years ago.

Lovely story

Despite several minor errors throughout the book, it does not detract from story. It has a great ending during which all i's are dotted and t's crossed. I really like it when an author wraps up loose ends like that. The extended epilogue was just a nice bonus. I would have rated the story higher if not for the incident of 'God' being used as an expletive. It is not something I enjoy when reading a story. But I cannot deny that despite that, the author has crafted a lovely story here.

Interesting story ruined by poor writing or editing. Over use of the word suddenly, think of a better way to transition. Also found the word “lovely” four times in one short paragraph. I would have enjoyed the book more if I had not been so annoyed every time I saw “suddenly” in the sentence. I rewrote the line in my mind thinking how it would sound better if someone had taken the time to think it through.

I read this through KU, and I found the formatting extremely distracting. There was double spacing between each paragraph and sometimes in the middle of a dialogue portion. I couldn't enjoy the story because of it. I don't mind spacing between paragraphs, but at the very least, it shouldn't happen in the middle of characters talking. The story was ok overall, but again, it was hard to get a grasp when the formatting is so weird.

A torn hem. Oh, the angst! A spinster at 22? A self-professed "bluestocking" who blushes and giggles at every turn, and who falls apart at the slightest problem. Her father expects her to marry a (cartoonish) fat, lecherous old goat, with rotten teeth and bad breath. When given a choice between the pig and handsome, wealthy, young Baron Elsbrook, who is tired of his mother's harping about finding a wife, Rowena says, "Hmm, I'll have to think about it." Can't recommend.

it’s okay

I have enjoyed the author’s other books so I was looking forward to this one. It has a sweet storyline so I’ll give it 2 stars. It honestly could have been told in just a few chapters though.

The main reason I’m giving it such a low rating is because the author went nuts with “she blushed”, “she giggled”, and that she was “shy”. At least 1/3, if not 1/2, of this book could be cut out if the author omitted these three descriptions of responses from the female lead.

Sweet

This is a sweet read for a quiet afternoon. I liked the story and the characters. I did appreciate the lack of angst and protracted misunderstandings. I will definitely go on to read another book by this author. The change in his mother and her father were rather unbelievable.

no blackmail please

I responded to several authors with the same give me your email address and I will give you the extended epilogue. I ended up with a deluge. For your information I did enjoy this book until the request. I generally read all the books by authors I like. A few are now on a never mind list due to epilogue ploy.

I found the formatting distracting. I pushed through simply because this was my first book by this author and I wanted check out her style. However, I didn't like the cursing and frequent imbibing by the characters either.
The parental conflict resolved itself too easily to seem realistic. For both parents.

The Arranged Betrothal with a Spinister

This was a great story. Rowena was a spinster, 22 years of age. Her father was drinking heavily and offered his daughter to n old Earl, who only wanted an heir. He was twice her age . She did find true love, but suffered much anguish before love arrived. Enjoy her story.

Charmless

I didn't even complete this book. The characters Andrew and Rowena have no chemistry. The dialogue betwenn them is uninspired. While all romance novels need a trope to follow, this book is the barest version of engagement of convenience that I've ever read. This is the one time I could imagine the H and h happily existing in a loveless marriage.

Andrew and Rowena

What is a spinster to do? When Rowena is asked to seek a marriage contract to save her family from financial ruin? Andrew has a similar issue with his mother, who desperately wants him to marry to further the family name. Read this delightful novel to understand t

Beautiful book!

How sweet a story was this. It was indeed a very pleasant book, and I enjoyed envisioning the era. The characters were described so well that I could see them easily in my mind. The surroundings, whether homes or clothing or parks, were described in great detail. I enjoyed the book from beginning to end!

This was okay. I liked that it wasn't too Insta lovey. But Ro didn't seem to stay true to her initial feisty personality and the change of heart of the parents was out of the blue. I guess just to end with every one all happy. At least it was a fast read and kept me entertained during a power outage.

The storyline wis a classic romance scenario, however i was unable to sink into the Regency period completely, as the dialogue was, at time, stilted, and the author either hasnt done her research, or she is consciously pandering to a modern, American audience. Dress and customsxwere obviously influenced by modern ideas.

Awwww, this is a great book!

Lots of learning about life, and families, and society is done by all of us. I can't imagine doing it under the eyes of the ton, even though there is still that class among us. These two are a great example of ignoring everyone else and doing what you feel is right. We all have to learn our own lessons.

Great reading with a really nice story line. Following a Spinster trying to get through life with a father who is determined to marry her off to an old man who is rich. You need to read this as when you get through with the book, I'm sure you'll smile.

Sweet and fast moving storry

The story is very typical. No surprises, so steamy scenes but soft and sweet. It was like reading every other book. The story was flat but also very heart warming.

Giggle

Awkward language and conversations. Simple story with little imagination and too pat an ending. The unlikely turnabout of heroines father and her mother in law was hard to swallow. The continuous "giggling" from grown women was annoying.

Marriage of Convenience!

Rowena, father is drunk and gambler, must marry well! Andrew is warped by his father’s obsession with wealth, vows not to be like him! A good story but is similar to a few I’ve read before!
