A private eye and a vigilante priest face off to bring down a corrupt band of evildoers—by the book, or off the books. Her way, or his.
Years ago, Aubrey Blake joined the police force to make a difference. She almost lost everything in the pursuit of justice. Now she’s about to do it again.
Disillusioned with her former career, she makes a living as a private detective. A living, but not a life.
Then the killings start. The police are on it. But Blake can’t let it be. She can’t walk away. She’s not wired that way.
I've read a lot of Ford's books, and this one has a different feel to it than the others that I've read, almost noir but not. Aubrey is faced with an interesting moral dilemma in the beginning of the book and realizes after the fact that her actions have consequences. This mystery has a twisty start to it. Ford packs a lot into the opening pages, from Aubrey’s situation to the murder and the victims. I had to review a few pages the next day because I got a little lost, but Ford does provide enough information so we can see the links eventually. There is some misdirection as well which made this a very interesting mystery. Who did it? Who didn’t? Was that guy involved? And also, is Aubrey ever going to have that date?
Well-written story with interesting MC. I've been reading more intense, suspenseful mystery thrillers lately, so this book had a lot of competition. The novel had a lighter feel with a fairly big surprise perp. There was also a bit of humor involved with how difficult it was to get a date with the woman she liked.
