Meet the all woman crew of the space salvage vessel, The Venus. Lydia, Jonesy, Melody, Fluffy the cat and renegade A.I HIVE. A salvage trip to the moon Titan causes more complications than any of them can imagine. A space adventure novellette
What a delightful little mind bending sci fi story. It's a space ship with a feisty girl crew that meets a beautiful anomaly in space. It's fun and confusing and made me really happy.
I enjoy reading Sarah's stories because they always feature memorable characters, interesting settings, and creepy situations. And this one was another hit.
When The Venus stumbles on a strange colourful swirling close to Titan, the small crew don't let it stop their mission. The ship needs repairs and Captain Lydia Ramirez dreams of a better, safer life but after landing, things get a bit complicated...
What a trippy, turbulent ride this turned out to be. I enjoyed the dialogue and camaraderie between Lydia, Jonesy (pilot) and Melody (engineer). Fluffy was cute, because every spaceship needs a cat. And HIVE, the AI has quite the attitude.
Take all of the above, add a bizarre twist featuring time and space, plus a dose of creepy, and this becomes such an intriguing tale. The SF element and worldbuilding was interesting. Plus there are definitely Event Horizon vibes, and I loved that movie!
Really enjoyed this! The cover's eye catching, too. 🚀✨🐈
Science Fiction isn't my thing but I really enjoyed reading Venus Falling by Sarah Jane Huntingdon. She's a natural story teller and adds plenty of fun and humour. It's full of really funny moments particularly from Jonesy the headstrong adrenaline seeking pilot! This is a short read so perfect for when you're between books.
The Venus is a salvage ship roaming through space searching for salvage so they can get rich. Each member of the all female crew has been made an outcast but together they form on mighty strong team. One day they are on the cusp of striking it rich when they encounter a strange cloud. Another ship is approaching also after the same prize and they must go through this mysterious cloud if they are to make it to the site first.
The cloud may be the most beautiful thing they have ever seen, but is it as harmless as it looks?
First of all, characters named Jonesy are the best. There is no way around it. Don’t give me examples of any that aren’t because I doughnut want to hear about it! Sarah Jane Huntington has really hit a stride with writing Science Fiction/Horror lately, and I’m so happy that I’ve been able to be on this journey as a reader. Venus Falling feels like a tribute to Alien and Event Horizon but vastly different than both, which, is t that exactly what a tribute to those movies should be? This is a very small setting with a larger universe going on which plays perfectly into the horror. The reader often feels like a small ant staring up at the crushing foot of a giant; you can only see a little bit but you know something huge is guiding it. Another fantastic read from Sarah! K thx.
An intriguing predicament, a plot that rockets along, and - above all - characters that jump off the page. The relationships between them might only be sketched in but they feel genuine. I could believe that these people have been working and living together for a long time, and I'm including in those characters the cranky AI that runs the ship and gives the story an edge of Puckish humour that reminded me of 'The Ballad of Halo Jones'.
Sarah Jane Huntington is just a natural storyteller and this was a joy to read.
