Rebels and Curses #2

The Shadow Gods

Rate this book
They were heroes who weighed the fate of the world against their love and chose me.

The gods are a shadow, shrouding my fate in darkness. With one snap of her fingers, Athena turned my life upside down, and now I have to decide...

Run?

Or fight?

Whatever choice I make, I won't be alone.

Pollux, Achilles, Hector, Paris, and Orestes have fought the gods before. Because of these five heroes, the Greek gods are trapped, and humans are free from their interference.

But the creatures who view us as toys aren't giving up easily. They want out, and they want their power back.

My curse stands between them and freedom, and now I'm caught in the crosshairs of a war that began long ago.

Lines will be crossed and fates sealed.

And I will use everything I am, and everything that made me, to protect the men I love.

The Shadow Gods is the conclusion of the RH duet, Rebels and Curses.

Even by the end of book two I would never have guessed heroine Leo to be the one to save them all. Hell, her powers of turning people to stone even took out king of the gods Zeus. And they’re not just locked away but gone, dead, donezo! And good riddance too. The way they care little of the harm they cause and instead strive to make it worse and last as long as possible is just one of too many reasons they could never be brought back. The group was not wrong on how the gods would reign literal hell on earth with weapons like nukes or even the chaos they’d caused politically, religiously etc. It’s a little unfortunate they all lost their powers after the showdown, but at the end of the day they turned fully human, and can have a fresh HEA where they will eventually die someday down the road after many years, children and memories. Fun duology.

The storyline/series got better!! The character growth, the plot, and the characters had me in a chokehold for the entire book. The way Leo leaned on her men and they leaned on her back was so cute and just the general support was nice to read. I feel like reverse harem is usually focused on the sex side of the relationship but this series also focused on the love and implied relationships between them all. I wish I could read this series again for the first time.

Pollux, Achilles, Hector, Paris, Orestes, and Leo/Medusa know what it is to be the toy of ancient gods. Bored immortals created heroes only to set them against impossible odds and use them for their own entertainment. All eventually lost their lives. Then the gods made a mistake. They brought them back. Pollux, Achilles, Hector, Paris, and Orestes were returned only to fight back, trapping the gods with the power bestowed to them. Their lives were empty, long, and tortured until one god unknowingly escaped and brought back the mortal who had once worshiped her. The mortal she had cursed after she had been assaulted by another god. Another mistake. Leo had no memories of her life as Medusa but had always been drawn to the ancient gods. Once her path crosses with the men who were once princes, generals, and heroes, the ultimate fight against the gods is inevitable. So is their love.

This is the clever conclusion to Ripley Prosperpina's Rebels and Curses duet. I know I've said it before but it can't be stated too often, Ripley is one of the most intelligent, well-read, imaginative authors writing today. This duet is the perfect proof. The personal stories of the Greek heroes are heartbreaking and poignant. They lived misguided lives due to their pride, greed, and righteousness, but mostly due to the whims of the gods. They each ultimately paid and have been living an eternal misery ...until Leo. She was the one true victim, and worthy of their adoration and loyalty. She provided them with the resolve to fight again and a reason to care. Their lives matter again and this battle is one that can't be lost. Once again, they are the heroes they were meant to be. This story beautifully blends romance, suspense, danger, and mythological history with intelligence and creativity. I was captivated. I adore the characters, the worldbuilding, the intricate storyline, and the outcome. I can't wait to see what comes from Riley's mind next. She has covered vampires, Greek gods, zombies, and witches, along with several classics. Will it be werewolves or Simone de Beauvoir, the Halls of Valhalla, or a dystopian adventure?

The Shadow Gods continues Leo’s story as the authenticity of her discoveries has been questions by the academic world, but as the FMC attempts to defend her work, she encounters some unforeseen truths about her real identity. At that point I really felt for Leo as she is a brilliant historian, one who dedicates time and effort to seek answers in the past, and the fact that someone questioned her credibility was simply atrocious.

Athena's appearance slightly shifted the scope of the story as there is more history between her and Leo than initially anticipated. Despite the adventures that follow this encounter, the main protagonist starts to learn more about the semi-gods that share her life. In them, she finds something she has been craving for since an early age and in a way that enables her to truly embrace the individual that she is today as well as the revelation that Medusa’s past is entwined with the person she is today.

I liked the fact that more was shown as to each of the MMCs characters and their hardships through the centuries. The author provided some much-needed information as to their backgrounds and astounding, though tragic, experiences. Each of them started to build a lasting connection with the FMC and I did appreciate the fact that the story did not just throw them in together. Instead, each relationship progressed at its own pace and since we are talking about demi-gods, it comes as no surprise that Achilles, Hector, Paris, Pollux and Orestes had their own perspective as to how things shall advance.

This second installment is full of adventure, mythology, and the quest to find the hidden plan of the Gods themselves. Amongst the jam-packed with action storyline, the love story between the characters establishes as they learn to let go of the past and start building some solid foundations for the future. It is almost as if they are given a second chance to live their life freely.

I thoroughly enjoyed Leonora’s journey through the books as she navigated her life through numerous challenges, hidden secrets, mysterious artefacts, and unexpected surprises in the face of the MMCs. This was a gripping story from start to finish.

The sigh I let out upon finishing this book came the depths of my soul.

The first book was such a win - a triumph, even. Archaeology! Greek mythology! Academia! Trojan heroes! Found family! Self-discovery! All the makings of a delicious meal, which should have been followed up by an equally delicious dessert - this book.

But it was not a delicious dessert, dear reader. It was, in fact, an overcooked tart. A floppy sponge cake. A clumpy chocolate mousse.

The main thorn in my side, as always, is about the romance - or, more specifically, smut. If you have 5 dudes at your beck-and-call, and literally all of them are buff Greek/Trojan heroes, and they're all in love with you and want to worship you ... why eat the cake one slice at a time? Why not eat the whole thing?

What I'm trying to say is, why didn't they all bang? Or, at least, a threesome and then a foursome? Like, one at a time is great I suppose, IF YOU HAVE ONE BOYFRIEND. But these dudes are close. And I get it, Hector and Paris are brothers and maybe that'd make it weird, but surely they could work out a system.

And it's not even smut-wise. If I were Leo, and was as stressed out as she CONSTANTLY is in this book (a dire change from the collected, cool-headed Leo in the first novel), I'd have, like, a dude massaging each of my feet, one on my shoulders, and two on my arms. But the intimacy seemed robotic and box-ticky, not organic or even that hot.

TBH, I didn't even care about the Athena/Poseidon stuff. I honestly think it would've been cooler if Leo had been just a normie, targeted by the gods for getting too close to ridding the world of them forever or something. But I get it - there were loose ends in the first novel that needed tying up, so I can forgive that. But also, whatever happened to Dr. St. John? Did we ever find out? Was he a god in disguise as well? I genuinely can't remember, and I finished it like 3 days ago lol.

One star is for Achilles because I have something of a *hyuck hyuck* weak spot for him, and one star is for the epilogue because it was cute as heck.

RATINGS
Overall: 4.8/5
Characters: 4.8/5
Plot: 4.5/5
Chemistry: 4/5
Spice: 2/5
Pacing: 4/5

MAIN CHARACTERS - Leo/, Hector, Paris, Achilles, Orestes, and Pollux

SYNOPSIS - A scholar takes a teaching position at Oxford to follow her dreams of uncovering ancient artifacts tied from Troy. After already having discovered one, she finds herself involved with 5 mysterious men who either want to protect her or kill her. They're each tied to each other, but as she begins to unravel the mystery, she sees that they're inexplicably connected to Troy.

REVIEW - I went into this duet with low-to-mid expectations. The write-up was enough to intrigue me but I honestly figured this would, despite following people who have lived centuries, lack maturity or substance. This defied that entirely. It was smart, heart wrenching, and allowed for human empathy to really soar with regards to the myths come to life. I felt like each MC's personality and pasts melded well and they each felt unique (which RH series sometimes struggle with) but, more than that, I felt a kinship to each of their suffering. Where I felt this lacked a little was actual time. The story moves a bit quicker in the 2nd book, understandably, and each relationship begins feeling rushed. The story requires it and the urgency to stop Athena and the Gods creates an anxiety that moves things along but I still wanted more time with the MCs interacting. The epilogue barely gives us a taste. Their feelings for Leo are kind of said and not seen because we don't have the time to get into it. Leo's own feelings toward each of them feels more natural to me given how little love or affection she'd ever really known. She even has the awareness to realize that but the maturity to accept it all the same. Even with this minor gripe, I still consider this duet to be a fast favorite for me. I've always enjoyed mythology and this combined that passion with romance without sacrificing anything in return. It felt genuine to the stories and still became something entirely of its own.

WOULD I RECOMMEND - If you like retellings and greek mythology, absolutely yes!

This was an explosive and creative conclusion to such a phenomenal story. Packed with mythology, Greek heroes, unimaginable tragedy and outstanding imagery. I was instantly captivated, riveted to my seat and hoping that the Gods get exactly what they deserve.

At the end of the first book, Leo’s life was turned upside down when she learned that she was Medusa. Now she needs to figure out how to punish those that have hurt her and try to stop Athena from whatever it is she has planned. Leo grows stronger and fiercer as the story progresses and her love for her broken men makes a turn for the better. The more they open up to each other, the stronger their unique family unit becomes. They quickly learn that they need to rely on each other in order to defeat Athena and the Gods.

Such a fantastic well written and poignant ending that was packed with action, suspense, mystery, adventure, violence, passion, pain and love. It was an epic love story that transcended time, and I loved every second of it.

The Shadow Gods is the dynamic conclusion to this action packed Rebel's and Curses duet featuring princes and heroes who were play things to the bored gods. Enraged, they trapped the gods with a seal that has been discovered after eons by Leo, an ancient Greek scholar who isn't who she appears to be. Pollux, Achilles, Hector, Paris, Orestes are each drawn to the professor and she to them. They have big problems with escaped gods after them. A dangerous journey has them in peril over and over.

Ripley's stories feed my brain with history brought to life. I am memorized by the intricate storytelling that captures mythological characters woven together with contemporary romance, suspense and danger like a beautiful tapestry. I will always instantly one-click this author!

Note: Something weird is going on with GR. I found this review on my book list on The Talented Mr. Ripley, which I've never read. The Shadow Gods was no longer on my list. I am reposting this again much later than I originally did at publication.

The Shadow Gods is the second part of the Rebels and Curses duet. It picks up right where we left off in The New Gods. Leo has learned about her past life and everything seems to be a big mess. She and the guys are off the try and thwart Athena's plans but of course they will have obstacles standing in their way.

So at the end of the first book we learned that Leo was actually Medusa. I wasn't sure how that was going to go but the backstory behind how she came to be the Medusa we all know was actually pretty heartbreaking. Now I'm not a big follower of Greek Mythology. I do however enjoy reading about the characters and I loved everything about the story Ripley laid out for us.

You can always count on Ripley to give us a strong female lead who is relatable and loveable. Leo is no different. The guys all come with their own baggage and together they help each other heal and grow. This book was full of adventure and surprises. Of course we have some romance going on. It's an epic love story that could not have had a more perfect ending.

This author's books always make me happy! As with all of her books, the story is unique and I learn something, in an entertaining way. I thoroughly enjoyed this modern mythology reverse harem duet, and I felt this second book wrapped everything up perfectly, with a beautiful HEA. As I've learned to expect and said before about this author's heroines, I always feel inspired to be a better, stronger person by them, and Leo was no exception. I loved the deep-seeded issues she and all of the guys needed to overcome from their pasts, and how they did it, together. There is sweet steam throughout as usual, but the story and the characters are the focus, and those as well as consistently great writing are what keep me coming back for more and more from Ms. Proserpina.

If you haven't read the first book in this duet, STOP, go back and read it. This book starts where that one ended.

When we left Leo, she was defending her work at Oxford and her nemesis turned out to be Athena. Leo is stunned at the knowledge she was Medusa. Well, I suppose is Medusa is more accurate. Hector is with her and as they approach the cottage, they were staying in reminds her they have to leave England.

Hector, Paris, Achilles, Pollux, and Orestes, now have to figure out Athena's plans and derail them so Leo is safe from the wrath of the Gods. The plan is to go to Greece, but they can't fly, the chance that Poseidon will undermine their efforts is too high. They plan on dropping a piece of the seal between England and France then destroy the rest.

Funny how fate will change your plans at the drop of a hat, or in this case a very scary event during the ferry crossing.

There is a lot of fact-finding and suspense as the five of them travel. They make more than one detour and there are many revelations along the way.

A page-turning read with love, mythology, sizzle, and surprises all leading to the perfect conclusion.

Leo, Orestes, Pollux, Achilles, Hector, and Paris are back and oh so good. We’ve picked up right where book 1 left off with Athena making her presence and medusas known. The seal is causing problems and if the guys have their way, it’ll be destroyed to never have the Gods emerge again…. And the Gods aren’t a fan of that at all. Man does this book continue with the thrills, the steam, and had me on the edge of my seat seeing if everything would work out. I buy books blind from this author. If she writes it, I’ll read it. This story only proves my point that Ripley Proserpina is a 5 star read every.single.time. If you loved Leo and the men in the first one, you’ll only fall harder in this one. The best duet I’ve read this year… stop reading reviews and buy it.

This book is absolutely amazing! I loved every second of it! It’s thrilling, captivating, and romantic all in one book. The world building and plot are phenomenal. The characters are superb. You won’t be able to put the book down! It’s that good. It’s a book you would pull an all-nighter for. You won’t be able to forget Leo, Orestes, Pollux, Achilles, Hector, or Paris after reading this book duo. I loved the Greek mythology aspect to it; it really isn’t something you read modernized, and that’s what makes this book so good! Author, Ripley Proserpina, killed me with this book! Just read it; you won’t regret it!

Great mix of Mythology and Romance

I wish there had been more action in this book. The idea of five immortals and one human battling the Greek Gods was so intriguing and filled with so much potential. Unfortunately, the reality just fell short and the plot was rather unremarkable. While I enjoyed the mix of mythology and romance, the story itself was lacking in essential details. Too much time was wasted discussing Leo’s change of clothes and not enough time was spent on finding the missing shards and taking down the Gods. The story gets wrapped up rather quickly and conveniently. The epilogue made for a nice, if somewhat predictable ending.

Couldn’t put it down!!!!!

NO SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!
This book is beautiful, exciting, adventurous, heartbreaking, and romantic. The characters are well written and distinctive. In reverse harems it’s easy to let one or two of the men in the groups connections to the main female characters to be not as well developed or forgotten this author is excellent at making sure you feel the love between everyone in the harem. The mythology adds another layer of excitement and interest to the story in a way that is not to confusing. I would definitely recommend reading this book after the first of course.

A threesome promise that was never fulfilled 🥲

Every time the spice was about to crank up another notch, they got interrupted.

I also felt like there should’ve been more angst during the final boss battle, but the men were too OP, same with the FL. For someone that triggered their past life powers in a new HUMAN body, it was a reach.

Anyways, if you look past all that, this was a good read. I added an extra star for epilogue of her men and her kids, although I do question if she and Achillies had a child. I can’t spell that man name for the life of me😭😭😭 I just find that to be more fair since she had a child with all then men except Achillies.

Having a hard time collecting my thoughts on this one. Still a good read, but not as much as the first one. I think if I had a suggestion, it would be that as much as I love a good duet, this probably would have been better to make a trilogy and use the time to do some character and relationship building. I’m not a fan of “instalove” and even though this was stretched out a little more than instant, the only one who made a bit of sense was Pollux, and it seemed like the least amount of time was spent on him. A few more adventures wouldn’t have gone amiss either. It’s still a decent read and I can recommend it, just had several areas that it could have grown.

aww

Okay I have to say that Leo has my heart here. Most people will talk about the men in her life but Leo herself wins hands down for me. I feel like this book was even better than the first one and I’m a sucker for drama with a happy ending so. Yay! The deserved that ending and I mean that. Plus it was super adorable lol. I will say I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 bc there were quite a bit of pov changes and that sometimes through me off but I still consider it a great read! Ripley did yet another amazing job!

This is the conclusion to this wickedly enticing duet, and I have to say the cliffy and wait was well worth it. I do warn you, once you pick up this book, you're not going to want to put it down. So, plan accordingly! The skillfully constructed storyline filled with exquisite tension, taut drama and decadent twists, along with its complex characters and their blazing chemistry make this an irresistible and absolutely consuming addiction. I am electing to post a forthright review.

I really enjoyed this, especially the epilogue! Love a happy ending.

I think this is a very difficult premise to complete thoroughly. Whilst it was great fun, and quite compelling it didn't capture me as thoroughly as the first one and I think that probably is due to the scale of trying to fit a story of God's into the time of now! 😂

Genuinely have loved this duet though. And would definitely recommend!

This was amazing! It was sad, joyous, and uplifting in turns. Loved how it ended. The ancient Grecian world was so rich in detail I felt like I could see it. Leo’s throw-backs in time we’re so touching and horrible. I’ve always been intrigued by this particular myth as it shone such a bright light on how evil and capricious the gods could be. The author did a phenomenal job of bringing it to life.

I had high hopes for this book the first one was so good. However, this one just seem to drag on, and on was all I could do to keep reading. I only got 59% way through the book and I had to stop because it just would not hold my interest. I don’t know what happened but very slow reading just altogether no thank you.

for the love, read this

I cannot express how much I loved this book. So dang good. There was so much to be had, and the characters are amazing. I loved every point in the duet, and this book wrapped it up nicely. The world the author built was so great I felt like I was part of the story. Told in multiple pov, I cannot tell you how much I loved it.

I loved this so much! The ending was a bit too quick. There was so much build up for such a quick finale and that disappointed me a bit. The action in both books just kind of lacked that intense rush I was looking for. It’s hard for me to not enjoy anything relating to any sort of mythology though.

I actually really like this book but the pacing is so slow, I was expecting it for the first book but here it’s more the forming of their relationship and the stirring of the plot ( very slowly). LISTEN I LOVE MYTHOLOGY! but I just got really bored and I like my men to be pretty psychology mental 😂all the men here are greeeens! I WILL PICK THIS UP AGAIN! I’m like 56% 3 ⭐️ for now.

Best ending ever

Do you think that Leo and her men can overcome the very gods that created everything? Read this to find out. I loved this story! So much guilt, angst, although I kind of wish Castor had gotten a chance to truly live. Epilogue was perfect.
