Existentialism : in Brief
Existentialism is a philosophy which has greatly influenced the intellectual scenario of the post second world war in 1950s and early 60s. It gained currency as a distinct philosophical system between the two world wars. It claimed to be the only other philosophy (another being Marxism) which has greatly affected literature, art, culture and politics in like manner.
It is "a reaction of the philosophy of man against the excesses of the philosophy of ideas and the philosophy of things".So it is a philosophy of the subject rather than that of the object. The existentialists maintain that only the subject is the existent in the whole world of ideas and things. Existence, they maintain, is not some thing that can be examined, studied and analyzed objectively, but it is to be felt, experienced and intimated. The existentialists are not interested in knowledge, theory or ideas as such; they are important to the extent they affect the conditions of man's concrete living.
