A Monster Romance

A creature of darkness saved me…and he isn’t letting me go.

I was offered my first solo project. It was a chance too good to be true—that should have been my first clue. Go to an island on the Gulf Coast, dismantle and catalogue a beautiful cathedral, and catch some sunshine on the sandy shore as a bonus. What could go wrong?

Let’s start with an attack from a monstrous beast the first night on the beach. When a dangerous man leaps from the night to defend me, I’m tempted to think fondly of my unexpected champion.

Until I realize the mysterious, brooding figure is the very obstacle to completing this project.

Not only is he hiding things from me, I’m convinced he wants to make my life a living hell.

My terrible savior is just as brutal as the creature he fought off, damaged in ways I’ll never understand. And yet, the more time we’re forced to spend together, the more I catch glimpses of kindness and sparks of passion beneath his brutal exterior.

His touch sparks an unexpected passion, tempting me to throw caution to the wind…

Until I discover the real reason he’s helping me.

Will we be able to work together peacefully, or is my time on Jekyll Island doomed before it even can begin?

A steamy, gothic tale, this stand-alone monster romance raises the question: what truly lurks in the shadows?

If you like tragic, angsty heroes and misunderstandings to begin the relationship, then read the paranormal romance, Key To The Dark today!

Just a normal girl in a paranormal world!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💙🖤💚💜
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘📔
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌍🌎
Character development: 😔😃😤😋🥰

The Hero: Vincent (a.k.a. The Specter) - he is an immortal warrior, sworn to celibacy and sworn to protect Jekyll Island with his life. He is a gargoyle sent to find out information from the troop of antiquarians that were sent to catalogue all the items on the premise of the church. He expected supernatural beings but was decidedly apprehensive when only a human woman arrived. He couldn’t get the information he needed out of a human, especially a female. He was supposed to find out who sent the scholars and expose the threat. He was even more perplexed when he found himself attracted to the female.

The heroine: Alida - she comes from a wealthy European family and was sent on her first solo project to Jekyll Island, off the gulf coast of Louisiana. A small tropical island where she was to dismantle and catalogue all the artifacts in an ancient rundown cathedral before it was demolished. It was a place full of secrets that she couldn’t wait to find out. Her job was to salvage the glory from old structures before they were torn down and she was excited to finally be able to do it in her own way without her former mentor, Thomas. Her very career was riding on her performance on this job.

The Story: The priest was away for another few days, so Alida was able to get the key to the cathedral and start her work on her own. She began in the monastery, in a room with 37 cabinets. In the first cabinet alone, she found old vials filled with indeterminate substances and a weapons cache, including ornate daggers, sheaths, and javelin heads. Vince sees her as a thief, there to raid the church where he prayed daily. He was also trying to find an answer to why evil seemed to be coming to the island in droves lately.

“While the church of St. James served the island as a religious source, and had for centuries, the original purpose of this place was for a devote brotherhood of warriors to protect the grotto and fight off the evil that sought to rule it. The original warriors had been faithful Roman Catholics, and so they brought priests to serve their spiritual needs.”

It turns out the island grotto is a hidden source of magic that Vince and the other supernatural warriors protected because if the wrong kind of supernatural creature found that grotto, then there would be big consequences. One thing I really like about gargoyle romance is that each one has a completely different storyline. No two are the same and this one was pretty good. I liked the magic and the variety of supernatural beings on the island. There was also a lot of chemistry between the two main characters from the start.

I also am very fond of the trope where the heroine is a human in a supernatural world. This one was good in that way, and I really liked the big reveal. I won’t give anything away, but to say it was a big surprise to her.

Pretty good, I’d give it 3.4 stars. Lots of cool world building. I would’ve liked more romantic suspense or scenes building up their romance. It’s hard to make romance stories work when the book takes place over short time periods (I think this story took place over a month at most). I also rounded down due to many very distracting typos.

A couple of missed opportunities there. The main one is: how do you have a succubus villain without even one example of her seducing/feeding off someone? If there is going to be a succubus villain, I want to see her powers and know why she is dangerous. It’s kinda like having a movie scene where someone puts the gun on the counter and it is never talked about again. Need some kind of payoff…

I found this so easy to read and very enjoyable, I loved the dual POV, I always love to read both characters views and feelings , it’s done so well too, both unique and distinct voices. It’s got everything you could want in PNR/monster romance, it’s full of steam, chemistry and great characters. I loved this, but found the ending a bit too abrupt

So many weird tangents. The characters were obsessed with each other way too quick with no reason for it so it kinda made it hard to believe? I also hate when the fact that one character is a human and one is a monster is like a big deal for everyone. Like. Just have sex and be happy. What do I care.

Weird religious plotline. Could have gone without it.

There was some intrigue in the story but it had little pay off. Definitely a classic Stuff Your Kindle no substance read.

I never thought I wound read another book about Gargoyles that I would like. Vince is a perfect anti-hero and pairs perfectly with Alida.
I felt like there was something I was missing throughout this book though. Maybe background on the supernatural creatures and how they really knew each other would have been nice.
Sometimes the action happened too fast, like it felt rushed but I still really liked the story and characters. I think where it felt too fast was because I wanted more of the story not because it didn't make sense.
I am newish to her books but I've enjoyed them so I cannot wait to see what happens next.
I did receive an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Triggers:- Profanity/Sex/Violence

Hidden triggers:- Religion/Catholicism/ Physical Assault.

Described as Paranormal Romance, Dark Romance, Steamy Romance, Monster Romance, Gothic Romance.

Personally I felt this should be more descriptive as a YA, NA than a steamy romance, yes there was description of sexual activity, but it wasn’t intense, blow your mind or explicit. The violence also was not explicitly described, and there were a couple of swear words!

The story however does very much have a Gothic (not paranormal) feel. It is very much located in and around a church and its artefacts. A Gargoyle being one such artefact. There are also scenes where other supernatural beings are part of the story, witches etc. The story was cohesive and easy to follow. Plot twists were fairly easy to decipher.

I felt the characters a little one dimensional and hard to feel much of their development through the story. As well as throwing in unhelpful facts, like oh she’s a super rich heiress, it just didn’t bring any additional layers to MFCs character.

Who knew Monsters could be so sexy?!

I received and ARC for this book and now I want to share my honest review with you.

Starting with the confession, that this was my first ever book in the monster-and-human-love-story genre. I honestly didn't know if I would like this type of story but the cover just caught my eye and my curiosity won. And I am very glad I gave the genre and this book in particular a read.

At first I thought the plot was going to be very cliche, with the focus being on the spice, as that was my expectation of the genre, as that was what I heard most from it as well. And I was honestly surprised that the plot turned out to be a great story with great characters.

The book is written in a dual POV, so we get into both MCs heads, which I loved. Both POVs are written very well, and I especially liked getting into Vinces head and feelings.
In general Alexas writing style is very easy to read and so good. I read this book in a day, because I couldn't stop reading. She is one of these writers where a whole book feels like one chapter, because the writing is so easy to read.

The worldbuilding of the monster world is done mostly good and it was quite easy to understand. But after finishing the book and thinking about it, there are quite some holes in the magical system, I think. Not many, but a few to be confusing, as some of it is integral to the main conflict as well. It is by no means distracting so much that you do not get the conflict or are less invested. It is just confusing.

About the characters:
Alida is an amazing FMC! She also is a woman with very good instincts. I found it so refreshing to read about a woman who has learned a lot in her life and has already grown as a person. So her journey in this book felt more like, she had to use what she already learned and that was her challenge. Alida does not know about the monster world but she does have an instinct for danger, and she actually listens to it. How often do I read about a character having an instict of danger and they ignore it, because "it just couldn't be.." it is always so infuriating to read. So thank you Alexa for writing such a great FMC!

Vince is.. Oh I fell in love with a gargoyle too! He is the perfect combination of a hot supernatual guy, who can be domineering BUT he also respects boundaries. How hot is that? I was scared at the beginning that there would be some plot line of he changes for her and now is not a bad guy anymore. But no, he is who he is and doesn't apologize for it. His growth is also his own, there was no changing because of the woman.

The spice in here is also written SO GOOD! It is a very spicey book, and the scenes are written so hot, I loved them all and wished there were more!
Also the scences, when they take place, make sense in the plot. There are no random sex scences in the middle of danger or something like that.
And the characters have a great connection and chemistry. But they also got to know each other, before engaging much. Alexa concentrated on building good characters with chemistry and actually lets them breathe in the plot. They don't jump each other immediatley, as at first the tension is built, which makes the spicey scences later all the better!

The ending was the only thing I didn't like about the book. Not because of the ending itself, but because it was rather abrupt. I won't spoil anything, but I just wanted to say, that I felt like there were at least 5 chapters missing between the last one and the epilog. Because the epilog just tells you what happend in the end, and also states some things that were NEVER built up or teased before. These things should've been built up before and also shown to us in at least 50 more pages. Alexa did an outstanding job the whole book through in showing us the story and letting her characters just be and not dump the information on the readers. So this ending disappointed me a bit and left me very perplexed.

I very much liked this book and am glad I read it. I will read more in the monster genre because I highly enjoyed it. I will read the second book in this series and would also recommend reading Key to the Dark as well. I loved this book and its spicey scences, the plot was great and I want to find out if the second book has a better developed ending and maybe this one was just a fluke.

Some of the key points of this novel simply didn’t work for me on a fundamental level. The MMC is a gargoyle, a guardian pledged to the church, a kissless virgin who has taken vows of celibacy. Gargoyles aren’t evil figures in mythology, so I don’t understand why he had such a complex about seeming evil/monstrous nor why the supernatural community would treat him as an outsider. He’s not a natural predator to humans (although the book refers to the predator/prey dynamic between them quite a few times as if that’s a thing) and I don’t think the primal dom/chase kink works with the character: neither the type of monster he is, nor the type of man he is, would naturally lead to that type of kink.

On the other hand, the FMC is a bit of a haughty one, an heiress, and a natural dominant, and the scenes where she orders him on his knees (to wash his back in the shower, you pervs! He’s eight feet tall and winged! 😂) are completely congruent with her character. A femdom/malesub dynamic between the two of them would’ve made a better fit, but the author didn’t pursue it—probably started the book with certain kinks in mind and didn’t bother to adapt the spicy scenes to jibe with what the characters were actually like.

The plot of the book seems to get bored with itself and meander off partway through. It starts off with the FMC as an antiquarian cataloging artifacts for a benefactor the MMC knows to be evil, and while he’s trying to work out whether she’s an innocent third party contractor or an accomplice, she’s being pressured by the client to make some discovery, though they won’t tell her precisely what that is. There should have been more subtle scenes of them trying to feel each other out, instead of the more hostile confrontations they do have, like when he saves her from the “alligator” on the beach.

Instead, the client returns halfway through the book The client then demands a specific artifact and reveals its location—

At this point, all the story beats are leading me to believe that a final showdown with the client is in order, and a final declaration of devotion from the MMC that will bind them together forever.

The story takes a hard left turn, and suddenly they’re traveling to New Orleans to investigate a string of unrelated disappearances. We’re meeting a whole new cast of characters when the book is already 85% of the way through. They go on a wild goose chase and find nothing. What gives?

Furthermore, there have been hints that yet another minor character has been messing with dark magic and FMC plans a trip to New York to meet up with him for yet another confrontation and to collect a macguffin. I assumed this scene was put in to offer closure on the whole story with that dude, cause then she’s right back on the plane and they all head back to the original town, where they confront the villainess again with a plan to exorcise her back to hell, but then, that same dude from New York was also there? Just to get killed immediately? It was so pointless! She could’ve killed him when she choked him out in NYC! Then I thought wait, was he just there so that MMC could kill him and FMC wouldn’t have blood on her hands? Then why did we send MMC on a nothingburger mission to New Orleans???? He could’ve gone with her and killed him there! Jeez, get a content editor!

Cut to the epilogue, where it’s just casually dropped in that FMC Oh, if ONLY this was a dual POV book where you could’ve easily switched to another character to show that side of the story 😩 🙄😤 instead of just throwing it in at the last minute!

Oh, and that big declaration/bonding story beat I mentioned? Also offscreen. God, you really did just get bored halfway through and wanted to wrap this up, huh?

I thought this was such a fun & sexy story by a new author to me. I felt there were influences of Tomb Raider & The Witcher in here, which I absolutely loved. One thing that always wins points with me as a reader is having a strong & capable FMC, in which Alida (FMC) very much was.

I thought from beginning to end the flow of the story was almost perfect. There were just a few items of complaint I have, the amount of grammatical errors/typos was slightly high & did bother me while reading. Then there is a scene with the shadows & a “voice” is heard by Alida, that I still am confused as to whom exactly that was. And the final thing I felt was at times the transitions were a bit too “fast-forward”, where it would take me a few seconds to understand that the story was jumping to the next day/next week instead of picking up exactly where the last stop ended at.

Other than that I still give this book 4 stars. FMC Alida was a welcome surprise with her character traits (tough, can handle weapons, highly intelligent, kind, had a backbone), MMC Vince was just this big lug that I immediately had a soft spot for, the spice once it got going was SO good (I was doing a little happy dance, because the teasing was killing me), the side characters were so great. I am hoping maybe there is or will be a book on Father Juan?!

I will be continuing with this author & from what I can tell she has other books that are connected to this world as stand alones. That I will definitely be adding to my TBR!

********Spoiler below, don’t read past this*************

I almost forgot to mention Karmichael! I was bummed to read of his death & honestly shocked. I am hoping (fingers crossed) that the author has plans for him & he’s not truly dead. If so, I feel that his character was not done justice.

So much fun and ultimately a sweet story of soulmates.

Alida is a freelance archaeologist (acquisitioner?) who has been contracted by a corporation to inventory, appraise, and/or sell various relics found within a recently purchased church. She is also human. This church- unbeknownst to Alida- resides in supernatural territory, and the locals are not pleased to lose the consecrated space.

Vince is a local. Tall, broad, dark, and broody, he is immediately drawn to Alida. She sees his human glamour, but in reality he is a gargoyle. Turned into stone to rejuvenate during daylight hours, he spends his nights fighting evil creatures, of which there seem to be many surfacing as of late. Together with his friends Juan, the local priest, and Jackson, owner of a local bar ( but also a beserker), the three try to rid their town of the invading evil while maintaining peace among the factions of supernaturals living there.

Alida is drawn to Vince but he is the grump to her sunshine, and she thinks he hates her and is trying to sabotage her. She’s half right. Vince is aggravated at what he sees as Alida’s glorified grave robbing but finds himself feeling strangely protective of her. At his friends’ urging, he reluctantly begins working with Alida to see exactly what she’s up to. Wary at first, Alida comes to enjoy her time with Vince, giving us a beautiful enemies to lovers and grumpy/sunshine dynamic.

Their evolving relationship, especially when Alida acquires the Sight ( ability to see supernaturals) and her world turns upside down, is beautiful to follow. Recognizing the protective, caring soul inside of the monster, Alida wonders if she can make this work, while Vince is sweetly awkward and insecure .

The banter was enjoyable, the few spicy scenes were good, and I liked the overall story here.

I have always enjoyed Alexa Michael's books. This one has an interesting story, but it is spoilt by the frequent use of the "F" word. I do not believe this was necessary for the tone of the book. In fact, I found it to be distracting and debasing. I am disappointed that an author of Alexa's caliber needed to lower herself like this.

However, the story was excellent. I liked the three guardians of the island - Vince the gargoyle, Juan the priest and their friend Jackson.

Alida and Vince's romance was steamy. I loved the ending.

I received this book as an ARC and have given my honest review.

This isn’t a typical read for me. I’ll be upfront in saying I don’t like smut in books, but it’s pretty easy to skip those scenes.

Alida is a history buff who works with artifacts. She’s sent to the U.S. for a job at a cathedral. There she meets Vince, a gargoyle, and a few more monsters she didn’t know existed. Together Alida and Vince try to save the world.

Key to the Dark has your run of the mill enemies-ish to lovers and supernatural romance tropes. I found quite a few editing mistakes that should have been caught. I also didn’t see the logic with super tall paranormal creatures and their differing heights to those who could see them for what they were and those who couldn’t. I also couldn’t stand the cliches of both characters knowing every single rare language. Alida kept bringing up how tough she is and how she’s gotten out of way more dangerous situations. But what’s more dangerous than a threat to your life and the end of the world? No details went into her stories.

I also didn’t like the basic scenes like going to the fair to win her a stuffed animal or her skimpy clothing when she’s trying to be professional. It didn’t fit.

What I did like is the style of writing. I like that the author doesn’t spend any time on tiny scenes that don’t add to the book. It made reading much more enjoyable. I also cared about many of the characters.

I hope there’s a conclusion in a future book for Jackson’s sister and the missing girls in New Orleans.

Thank you to Book Sirens for the ARC for my unbiased review.

Captivating book from start to finish with great humor, plotline, and pacing.

"Still, through the piercing anger smoldering in my chest, that damn scent surged through me. Its venomous sting was sickly sweet and attractive." -Vince about Alida

Alida is an archeology researcher setting out to make a name for herself and Vince is a Gargoyle destined to protect the very Church she's been hired to work out of before its demolition. What starts off as anger towards her morphs into fascination and grudging respect. I found myself rooting for these two from the very beginning.

We find out early on that Alida is in over her head not knowing she's working for villainous magical forces. Learning more about her story, dreams, and desires, it was easy to connect with her. I did struggle with her background a bit because I have biases about "rich kids," but I tried to picture her as a more determined version of Alexis Rose from Schitt's Creek and that helped. I think it would be useful to flesh out some of the supporting characters more. I found myself wanting to know more about Jackson, Juan, and Karmichael, but maybe they have their own books coming up (fingers crossed).

Throughout the story, I was surprised, happy, and amused. Vince and Alida's chemistry is off the chart. Overall, great first book in the series and I'm excited to read the sequel. Read this if you enjoy a good slow-burn monster romance!

To be honest, I picked this book for the cover, but I stayed for the story! I've recently started getting more into monster romances and this one looked like it was going to be nice and spicy. I was pleasantly surprised to find out it was a Gargoyle Romance since I'd never encountered one before!

I really enjoyed the dynamic between Alida and Vince throughout the story, especially with the enemies to lovers trope. I do wish the author had expanded upon the "mates" thing more. It's mentioned once, and even stated that they should talk about it, but then we never learn anything more again. I know that mates at this point is such an over used trope that we should know how it all works, but every world has a different set of rules. Is the mate thing for all supernatural beings? Or is it just for gargoyles? Is there a different type of bond because he is a gargoyle?

The plot was enjoyable and the spicy scenes were well done. They weren't too long, which I think is a good thing, since sometimes they can go on and on for pages and become very repetitive. I do wish that the ending wasn't so abrupt! It felt like there was all this build up right at the end and then it just stops. We get a brief epilogue that wraps everything up and it just feels like there was more missing in between. It wasn't bad, but I guess it felt a little rushed to me.

Overall, really enjoyed it! Can't wait to check out her other book in her monster series!

4.5 Rating, rounds to 5.
My main regret is that I didn't prioritize reading this book soon enough. Because this is a thoroughly enjoyable book! I've read the Kyra Baxter series by this author and when I found she did a book with a monster romance theme, I was intrigued and knew I needed to read it.
I loved Alida! She has a strength of character that I wish I could emulate at work (and in life in general). She keeps her cool in all situations and has a pretty good head on her shoulders. I loved her interactions with Vince! From their rocky first interaction to their steamier ones, they were all great. Another thing I liked: she took charge in certain situations where the female lead doesn't usually take charge in most books with a monster theme romance.
Vince was stoney (ha) and gruff at first, but inside he has a metaphoric heart of gold. He thinks he's a monster an unworthy of love, especially after he meets Alida.
At first, Alida and Vince are not exactly on the same team, though the journey from enemies to friends to much more is a delightful journey!
I recommend this to anyone looking for a monster romance, but it isn't too dark. I eagerly await the next one in this series!!

In fantasy, we have so many creatures, and irrespective of their monstrous nature they are good to some people in their life. Every person has a different perspective on others. I don’t think I have read a story centered on Gargoyles, so when I got the chance to read one, I just took it and dived an open mind. And let me tell you I’m not disappointed, I got to know so many fun facts and I loved this gargoyle.

The story is fast-paced and written intricately, things are explained and the plot is easily understandable. The chemistry between Alida and Vince is striking from the very first conversation they had and how that grew over the period of their work and unravelling the suspense is the best reading. Both the characters have a different aura to them that want you to read more and more.

When everything got clocked in place the story moved pretty fast and I would have loved it more if we have got to know a little more in the end about the situation and description of the Dark that how few things worked.

It’s a 3.5⭐️ for me.

Key To The Dark by Alexa Michaels is a spicy paranormal romance. The story introduces Alida; she is on her first solo project working for a private agency that purchased a church on Jekyll Island.  Her job is to list all the items found and ensure the church only takes the things that belong to them.  However, there is a lot more going on than she realizes. It The church is positioned over ley lines that provide an abundance of magic.  Evil forces are trying to gain control of the magic, while three guardians try to prevent this.  Alida begins to get close to Vince, unaware he is a gargoyle and guardian of the church.  Vince starts to catch feelings, but he knows there is no way a woman like Alida would want to be with a monster like him.  Alida realizes her dangerous situation when the woman she reports to opens her sight and shows her true form as a succubus.  With Alida's eyes now open to the world, will she aid the guardians and give Vince a chance, or will she run from the monsters she's only read about?

I immensely enjoyed reading Key To The Dark.  It was an excellent combination of action, fantasy, myth, and romance.  There is a race against time where good battles evil.  The characters range from humans, shifters, and gargoyles to demons, creating an exciting group of characters with unique powers.  Alida and Vince are so perfect for one another.  Neither one expects to find love and has become accustomed to being lonely. There is a beautiful found family aspect as Alida falls for Vince and falls into a comfortable role with the other guardians as well.

I rate Key To The Dark 4 out of 5 stars.  A few things felt unresolved or almost too convenient. Alida's mom told her stories and owned a rare one-of-a-kind book the priest needs. This book is for adults due to the graphic, $ex, and violence. I highly recommend this book.  If you enjoy steamy moments with monsters and lots of action and suspense, add this to your TBR list and prepare for a thrilling ride!

Vince and Alida were the epitome of opposites attract. Alida was sent to work on her first solo project on a remote island. Unbeknownst to her; she was working for powerful supernatural beings with nefarious intent. She meets Vince who is also a Gargoyle who already knows her reasons for being on the island and is intent on preventing her from completing the task she has at hand. What he didn't intend to do was fall in love with her.

Alida received a crash course in the Paranormal and that things really do go bump in the night. Now that she understands the details surrounding the project she was sent to work on, and the individual who is pulling the strings; Alida knows that the only person qualified to help her and keep her safe is Vince. She just never factored in the fact that her savior became her knight in shining armor in more ways than one.

This PRN is the first book in the Monsters in Moonlight series is fantasy romance to read for those who love monsters, mystery, and steam. This is the story of Alida, an expert in cataloguing antiques, and Vince, a gargoyle and guardian of Jekyll Island. He does not want Alida to catalogue the Cathedral before it is dismantled by a mysterious group who hired her.

I love the world this author has created. The characters are interesting, and she has brought together a unique blend of paranormals. Alida, a human, was a great FMC. She was a nice blend of strength and vulnerability. Vince was a good anti-hero with his touch her and d13 vibes to his insecurities in thinking who could love a monster like him. The plot had twists and turns and had you guessing on what was really being protected on the island.

I cannot wait to read the next one this series.

Vince and Alida are an unlikely pair that actually fit together perfectly. They start out enemies, become begrudging friends, to later realize their attraction and be lovers.

I love Alida’s innocence and smarts. I love Vince’s antihero persona. I love the other characters of this story that complete the whole world of monsters and supernaturals. The way they all meshed together made for a fun read. While the book was entertaining and appealing, I felt the ending was a bit rushed and gave me a bit of an unsettled feeling as it was just done too quick. Considering they had seemed to have such a formidable enemy. But otherwise, the book was good! I still recommend reading about their love story!

Wow, I loved this!!

I really enjoyed this book! Wow, a gargoyle, Vince, tasked to protect the church and the leyline and Alida, a historical preservationist, comes to do her thing to the church after it was sold off beneath Vince and Father Juan's feet. As much as Vince doesn't want to like her, he can't stay away. I also really loved the other characters in this book, like Juan and Jackson.

There is a huge otherworldly fight for the church and what it is hiding... there is a very powerful succubus that wants the power it's hiding!

Really loved this book, and the ending was perfect!

I received an ARC for my honest review!

The book jumps around a lot, or from point of view to point of view, or to what’s going on. It’s a bit too much at times. I also felt there was too much something, maybe anger (?), between the 2 main characters. I also didn’t like the main characters. This just felt like it was moving so slowly, that it lost my interest with all the other strikes against it for me, I just put it down & couldn’t bring myself to pick it back up. I will be deleting this from my Kindle library.

At my age (61), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

If you loved the show Gargoyles as a kid, you'll definitely enjoy this book. I always love when authors mix so many mythical/folklore creatures together, and the concept of a gargoyle sworn to serve God but is struggling with his mate bond is a new one for me that I didn't know I needed to read. I think the main love interest, our virgin gargoyle with the heart of gold, really steals the show. You can't help but like him. Alida is a nice heroine to root for too. She's ambitious, intelligent, and doesn't suffer from helpless maiden syndrome. Watching her and Vince's relationship grow draws you in pretty quickly, and the ending leaves you feeling satisfied.

Supernatural mystery with action and romance. What more could you want? Vince and Alida are a great pairing. The priest and the berserker were amazing side kicks! I would want a story just about the priest! The only thing I would have changed would be the beginning and end. The beginning was a little slow and repetitive and then the ending was fast. Great story overall and I would definitely read more from this author. Disclaimer: I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was a 3.5 star read for me. I really like monster romances and I had never read a monster romance before, so I was excited and I was not disappointed with Vince! The plotline was lovely and the characters were developed well, but I thought there were some holes in the story due to the various subplots that made the story a bit difficult to follow at times. I loved Vince, but I had mixed feelings about Alida, as I thought she was a good match for Vince, but I just didn't connect with her as a heroine. Overall, this was a good read, but I likely won't continue the series.

This is my first monster book. I was intrigued by the premise of the book and I’ll be honest. It took me a while to get into it but once I did it was pretty enjoyable. I really liked Vince and Alida. The book was exciting, the relationship between Alina and Vince was great. I hope they feature in the rest of the series. I found the story a bit complicated at the beginning but I put it down to the author setting the scene for this story and the subsequent stories in the series. I received this book from BookSirens. I’m voluntarily leaving this honest review.

2⭐️ rounded up. The plot and world building was interesting and the writing was decent for the first half. It took a turn for the worse, around 60% through and reads as a man moonlighting with a female pen name who cannot write an intimate scene from a female perspective and has no idea how a woman's body works. That one scene ruined the whole book for me. It took me 4 attempts to finish that chapter. I DNF and abandoned thus book at 63% completion. This should have stayed a fantasy book w/o the romance or spice aspect and would have been better that way.

Story/Plot: 3.5⭐️
Spice: 2.5🌶

Overall Rating: 3.5ish

I avtually thought this was a bit cute. It had some great little rom com sections, some steamy sections 🤭🥵 and a decent plot line.

I think the MCs have a great relationship once they get over hating each other, and I like the fact that the FMC was actually pretty level-headed and used a bit more logic and reasoning rather than the typical fight it until something goes drastically wrong and is forced to accept it.

Would recommend if you are after a little fast-paced rom com.

A gorgeous, saucy slow burner with a gorgeous, saucy gargoyle. Written wonderfully, Alexa H. Michaels has an amazing way with words.

I couldn’t put this down and read it in one sitting, and needed it to never end, I was so engrossed in the plotline and each and every character.

Vince is my new book boyfriend, and I’m refusing to share.

Read this if you’re a fan of monsters, the supernatural and a delicious slow burning romance.

Things I liked about this book. The main character, Alida was an academic, so she had intelligence when faced with creatures outside her previously known world. I also liked that the 'monster', Vince, was a broody romantic, secretive, and mysterious, which helped like his character and what he's charged with protecting. I enjoyed the characters conversations and the adventure they go on to prevent power from falling into the wrong hands.
