Just ok
I was looking forward to Lorenzo’s story and it felt flat to me. I couldn’t really see the love story but instead just a set of circumstances where 2 people fall into each other. Lorenzo and Gio were supposed to be very close, however in this book they feel more like boss/employee and it’s very disappointing. Lorenzo getting married without Gio there or at least aware given that he himself says that Gio is the closest person to him doesn’t make sense. The idea that Gio would let Lorenzo go to Jamaica alone without backup seemed far fetched. Gio wasn’t even really mentioned at the wedding redo. I know the whole story about her family was supposed to be lighthearted, however it left a really bad taste in my mouth. They came across as selfish and ungrateful. Her father even more so. Let’s recap, Lorenzo put himself in harms way, for free, to protect and rescue Onika, a woman he barely knew at first and who for all intent and purposes tried to spy on his organization, not once but many times, almost dying in the process and he didn’t even get a thank you for his efforts. Instead he had to contend with her family’s rudeness and constant passive aggressive comments because there wasn’t a wedding. Something which clearly was easy to fix. Even Onika didn’t show much appreciation for him, almost getting killed in Jamaica, focusing on the 2 weeks with no contact. Instead of thinking of Lorenzo’s Hawaii wedding as romantic or even try to understand his motives (given her knowledge of his childhood) she chose the whole manipulation theme. Let’s face it, she agreed to it and it was self serving as she needed his protection, so this self righteousness was frustrating. I don’t remember her thanking him for all he did for her either.
The whole name change was too corny. If anything he should have taken Olivieri as a name since Gio and his family saved his life and “raised” him, and more importantly he has bled for that name.
