Running in Slippers

Rate this book
Welcome to Running in Slippers, a humorous memoir about how Angie plummeted into despair after a failed relationship and the death of her father, taking you through the totally raw and vulnerable rollercoaster of severely misguided attempts to fill the voids, reading like a train wreck that you can't look away from.

Between social masks, social media facades, and the COVID pandemic, our society has become increasingly disconnected. Much of what we see in-person and online is profoundly filtered and edited. What we don't see are the everyday struggles and imperfections of real life.

It feels terrifying to allow our deepest, authentic selves to be seen, and possibly rejected, but that is exactly why she is doing it: to break out of the masks and encourage connection through vulnerability.

It takes fortitude to share your truth while holding your actions under a microscope, all while keeping your vulnerability on display. Angie does exactly that in “Running in Slippers”. I felt as if I was reading her personal diary, yet she also maintains a direct connection to her audience throughout her story. Through her journey we are able to see not only her strength, but her openness, honesty, and optimism. As you read, you can’t help but be alongside her as she navigates her way to self acceptance. Well written and boldly, unabashedly honest.

Bold, heart-breaking, inspiring, and full of courage

Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. The author recounts intimate and vulnerable parts of her life and shares them with you with a ton of courage.
It was hard not to laugh at times, and other times impossible to hold back tears.
Be prepared to be allowed inside someone's traumas, hopes, dreams, and everything in between.
The way the author tells her story is so relatable that you can't help but feel everything she's going through. You won't regret reading it. Like me, you'll be hooked and wanting to know more. I hope to read more from her soon!

A Fun Read!!

I enjoyed this one! It was a cute little story. I did, however, want a happier ending for Angie! She possessed such a reservoir of love to share with the world! At times, it felt like her story had some unexplored potential, leaving me with a sense of incompleteness for her.

Running in Slippers is a clear-eyed, vulnerable, and unrelenting chronicle of mental illness, suicide, trauma, and toxic relationships. After the death of her estranged father and the end of a relationship, Angie moves to Hawaii for a fresh start. There, she tries her best to rally and connect with her authentic self—a self she’s never really known after a life riddled with uncertainty and anxiety.

However, Angie soon learns that a change of place doesn’t fix her problems. Nor does it fundamentally change who she is. While she is happier in Hawaii in many ways, she still carries the weight of an unfinished and unexamined past. In a new relationship fraught with shadows from the start, Angie begins to unravel.

What follows is a devotional to hope and self-love; an aspirational examination of the power joy, humour, and of well-placed rage.

“Paula cheerily drops me off at the zoo, where I meet Hazel in hysterical sobs. We sit on a nearby bench. The irony of this is that the outside of the Honolulu Zoo is a popular congregation hot spot for a lot of mentally unstable, homeless people. Since I am in the middle of a hysterical, emotional breakdown, under the influence of drugs, barefoot, with two plastic hospital bags, and haven’t showered, brushed my teeth, or eaten in three days, I fit in perfectly. I ramble my story to Hazel, including how deliriously high I am.

The thing about Hazel is that I don’t trust her.”

In her book, Running in Slippers. author Angie chronicles her journey from despair to triumph with such a raw vulnerability.

When you hit rock bottom and life seems to fall apart the one thing that can get you through is facing your fears and doing it—whatever your it is—anyway.

Running in slippers will have you running for the Kleenex box one minute, and running to conquer your fears the next.

Get ready for some self-reflection after reading Running In Slippers! Angie’s story is so relatable and powerful, I couldn’t put the book down. It was gut wrenching and raw with heartfelt moments. Progress isn’t linear and life can be messy but this memoir inspires you to find the courage and vulnerability to lay it all out there no matter how many times you may stumble. Highly recommended!

One of the most intimately raw personal experiences I've ever read. Addiction has touched every family in one way or another. I applaud you for not only having the strength to battle this daily, but especially for having the strength to open yourself up and be so extremely vulnerable to the world. You are one brave and very strong lady. I have no doubt that your story will touch many lives, but I think it will change many more. Sometimes just knowing you are not the only one helps make that difference needed to alter your life path.

Once I start reading this book, I couldn’t put this book away. Angie is such a sensitive, honest, brave, and pure-heart lady. She is an attractive woman, but didn’t have confidence as she was raised in her childhood. Angie clearly know who she is and it’s so amazing and talented that she can describe her emotions and feelings on her own words. Angie is absolutely free soul and so brave to share her real life experience. There are many women who can related with her life experience and completely agree what women feel and experienced the relationship. I love the way she learned and grew from the emotional rollercoaster life that she went through and many of the women will related and agree that what she shared in this book. I’m sure someday, she will meet Mr. wright who will simply loves her the way she is.

I immediately fell in love with Angie and wanted to call her and offer to be her Hawaii aunty!!! The offer is real - anytime! It’s amazing how quickly you feel a part of her life - I often caught myself responding in support out loud! The story moves at a very relaxing yet energetic pace. The descriptions helped you visualize every location and you can’t help but cheer her on! Well done - and as an aunty would say - so proud of you sweetie!

Buckle up. What. A. Wild. Ride!!

Humorous, funny, sobering, authentic, honest, vulnerable and one hell of a roller coaster ride. This was the perfect camping read and wanted to read “just one more chapter” each time I thought I was done for the day.

It was like binge watching that guilty pleasure Netflix show.

Angie Hawkins’ life takes a nose dive when, shortly after getting dumped by her on-and-off boyfriend, her father suddenly passes. Her relationship with her father was far from perfect and in her adult life the effort for the relationship largely rested on Hawkins. With her mother also looming over her with judgements instead of encouragement, things for Angie start looking bleak. That is until she starts to invest in herself & well being and takes the biggest bet on herself to achieve her dream - moving to Hawai’i on her own.

There was something so special about reading a memoir written by someone I’ve been able to meet & taken a workshop from! I saw so much of myself in Hawkins’ people pleasing ways and inability to call herself a writer, something I’m still working through today. I really feel like she just cut a bit of her heart out and laid it all out for us to read along and that takes so much bravery. I was shaking my head and internally yelling at people (looking at you Ozzy! 👀) while reading along and laughing at some of her hilarious adventures, while also tearing up at some of the beautiful insights she would share after some terrible encounters.

I cannot stress enough how much I admire Angie’s storytelling & willingness to be so so vulnerable.

It says running in slippers, yet the cover art clearly shows sandals. I'm not sure I can get past that oversight to read the actual pages.
