Sisters of Midnight

Lily, Alice, Grace, and Jem are back in the third and final spellbinding instalment in the Sisters of Shadow trilogy by Katherine Livesey!

She couldn’t work out if it was the world that had changed, or herself…

When lightning shatters the darkness into a blazing jigsaw of panic and pain, Lily and her friends realise they’ve been transported through the jaws of the wild storm right to the gates of Midnight Manor, home of High Priestess of the Shadow Sect herself, Hecate Winter.

But as a swarm of figures in hooded golden cloaks surrounds them it soon becomes clear: the real enemy was never hewn from the shadows but hidden in the light.

A notorious legion of exorcists from beyond their borders, the Brotherhood of Light have been secretly abducting them for generations and indoctrinating them into believing there are good witches and bad witches, all subordinate to the whims of their oppressors.

Now it’s up to them to build a sisterhood strong enough to survive the sunrise.

the same applies to this book as did to the first two: it's written like a middle-grade book that someone put a few swear words and sex references in.

the writing style is so weird, and slightly clunky, but you know what? the characters are so much fun and it's cottagecore and queer and very very sweet so yes. I have now read the entire series.

essentially, as long as you don't go into this expecting a model of perfect writing, you'll be grand.

The final instalment in the Sisters of Shadow trilogy and the ending to this epic series is not for the faint hearted. This book broke my heart, made me cry, shout and cheer. Coming to end of such a long and emotional journey with our band of unlikely heroes, culminating in the long anticipated showdown with The Brotherhood was everything I wanted from the final book. Magical, poignant and thrilling this was a fantastic end to an amazing YA trilogy that I couldn’t recommend more!

This book was so much fun to jump into for a spookier read going into October! As a big fan of the Shadow and Bone series, this was a novel I had no issue jumping into and getting right into the adventure of it. It is the third book in the series, which was super exciting because I got to read the other two once more and fall back in love with the witches, apothecary, and all the other characters I'd come to love as I read this series.

It features one of my favourite tropes of found family, something that makes this novel SO GOOD! It features magic, friendship, family, and definitely all the makings of an amazing YA novel. There is so much love between characters by book three, it makes every action or consequence of one of the characters that much more emotional for the reader. The book picked up right where we left off in book two and I was so invested in all the characters that it was nearly impossible to put down! A great spooky season read!

Thank you NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this novel!

I loved this trilogy. not only because of the magical aspect (which I thought was great seeing from a newcomer & established pov & how they grow, adapt & cope with life) but also because of the relationships between the characters, the connections of friends, family, partners, betrayal, enemies. Whole trilogy done in 2wks, couldn't put them down!

Sisters of Midnight is the third and final book in the Sisters of Shadow trilogy by Katherine Livesey. Released 1st Nov 2022 HarperCollins on their One More Chapter imprint, it's 275 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.

This is a well written and engaging YA character driven fantasy novel. Central themes of friendship and cooperation and "sisterhood" challenging the darkness are combined with positive relatable strong female characters throughout.

The series has been described as "Anne of Green Gables if written by Diana Wynne Jones" and that is a fair description. Despite being marketed as YA, there are elements here which are much darker and more difficult than the first two books. There's drama aplenty, as well as themes of found family and acceptance. There are positive portrayals of LGBTQIA+ characters and strength of friendship and acceptance.

It ties up earlier series spanning threads, and wouldn't work well at all as a standalone. For readers who prefer to binge finished story arcs, this would make a good weekend series binge or buddy read.

Four stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Sisters of Midnight
by Katherine Livesey
Earc:NetGalley
Publisher: HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter, One More Chapter
Publication Date: 01 Nov 2022
Genre :Sci Fi and Fantasy, Teens and Young adult
Sisters of Midnight concludes Catherine Livesey's Sisters of Shadow trilogy, and like the previous books in the series, it's heavily focused on found families and has plenty of drama to keep readers engrossed. I felt the first few books were more suited to the younger age group of YA, but this one is certainly darker in tone. Determined to destroy all but magic, the stakes are higher than ever. With nowhere to go and no one to turn to, the group is forced into pragmatism. I find they are unlikely allies because, as the old saying goes, my enemy's enemy is my friend. Hecate She is Winter, Shadow She is the High Priestess of the cult, and was once their bitter enemy. Will the unlikely alliance be able to settle their differences and quell their power struggles? They must if magic is to survive.
All the familiar faces are back and I loved being back in the story and it felt like being with old friends. Here again the emphasis is on acceptance and inclusion and found family values. This makes the book a heartwarming read. The pacing is good, the story is rambling, and it takes the reader on quite a journey, making it hard to let go of the book as I'm looking forward to seeing how it unfolds.

Sisters of Midnight is my favorite book in the trilogy. I grew to love the characters, and the plot in this one was compelling. The relationships between the various characters was what I loved most about this book. It was a wonderful, cozy, adventure story.

The first book of the Sisters of Shadow trilogy had me at the description of “Anne of Green Gables meets Diana Wynne Jones” and I never looked back. I loved going on an magical adventure with Lily, Alice and their friends and this was a fitting end to their story. The perfect fall read.

I got this arc in exchange for an honest review.
