Lake Starlight #1

The Problem with Second Chances

Rate this book
Calista Bailey

For Rylan Greene and me, it was simple. Love only got us so far.

I’ve known him since we were six, long before he became the professional soccer star he is now. We’ve weaved in and out of one another’s lives as rivals, teammates, friends, and lovers. Until three years ago, when my life took a hit and I ran back to my small Alaskan town, Lake Starlight, away from anything or anyone that could hurt me.

He’s never far from my mind, a constant pining ache in my heart, but I’ve convinced myself I’m better off. But now, my best friend announces her engagement and that means Rylan will return home to stand as best man to her fiancé.

He’ll be back in my orbit for three whole weeks… but I can easily keep my distance. Sure, we’ll have to walk arm in arm down the aisle together, he’ll hold me close during the bridal party dance and we’ll stand for pictures next to each other. Nothing I can’t handle.

I’m so naïve though because he’s not in town for more than twenty-four hours before he knocks on my door. I should know by now, that the two of us will never be finished business.

This second chance romance spans sixteen years of a true love match that proves these two will only ever belong to one another.

Series ~ Lake Starlight
Publication date ~ May 16, 2023
Page Count ~ 282
POV ~ dual 1st
Featuring ~ soccer, childhood sweethearts, friends to lovers to enemies to lovers, small town, slow burn, second chance, flashbacks, minimal steamage

Calista & Rylan were childhood sweethearts on the same professional soccer career track, but plans get derailed when Calista gets injured and her dream is over.

Everyone knew they were meant to be, especially the meddling grandma's. Normally I am not a fan of meddling, but the retirement home ladies were so cute. I actually thought the app Buzz Wheel, where busy bodies could post what's happening in the town, was a fun element that gave that small town vibe.

There is a great cast of side characters and while this is a standalone I do wish I had read the Greene family series and the Bailey family series first, just so I'd have some background on these two. It does make me want to read them more now after having met some of the family here.

I hate how so much time was wasted for them to figure their stuff out, but I suppose that's all part of growing into your own person. They often referred to themselves as being on a roller coaster and that's the perfect description for what went on for 16 years. And that epilogue ~ gah the cutest! Overall, another delightful read from these two fun authors.

I love the set up for the next book in the series The Issue with Bad Boy Roommates.

"Love only takes you so far. Sometimes life gets in the way."
So… first Piper Rayne book. A lot of people had been recommending their books for a while, and I finally took the leap.
I mean… small town, childhood friends to lovers, second chance (or maybe first chance?)... it was clearly right up my alley.
It should be yours too, especially if you’re looking for a sweet read with some feels.

"I guess he doesn’t realize that he affects me as much as he ever did. Time passes, but apparently I remain stuck in the same spot as I always was with Rylan Greene—wanting more."
I really liked Rylan. He’s a really nice guy, and he’s really in love with Calista. It shows in everything he does, even when he tries to stay away from her because it hurts too much. My heart broke for him.

"Fuck, Calista, you were my everything."
I can honestly say I didn’t fully understand Calista, and that’s why this book is a 4-star read instead of a 5. I understand she was struggling, but her reasons for leaving him… No. Not strong enough. Not when she was supposed to love him.

But, you know… sometimes love really isn’t enough. Or maybe the timing is just not right.

"There was a lot more kissing, and I didn’t remember either of the double feature movies. All I remembered was the way Rylan’s hands felt as he skimmed them up under the hem of my sweatshirt and how soft his lips were. I think I knew then that I was in trouble."
I loved the fact that soccer brought them together. That they were friends before they were anything else, and the moments they shared. In fact, I wanted more. I wanted more from their past together. Maybe flashbacks, maybe more stories (even told by family members or friends)... because they felt special from the get-go, and I wanted to bask in their happiness.

"I’ve loved you since I was God knows how old. Definitely seventeen,"
Their respective football careers took off. However, something happens to Calista, and in the middle of everything, she lashes out at the wrong person. And their relationship ends.
The problem? They never stopped loving each other. No one could ever compare.

"Let’s be clear on something. You are mine. And I’m yours. No matter what you might think, there is no one besides you."
When Rylan comes back to their small town for his best friend’s wedding, they’re forced to meet. They knew it was coming, and they were dreading it. And suddenly, all the feelings come rushing back.
I have to confess that, again, I just didn’t understand Calista, and her stubbornness made me want to smack her a couple of times.

"Whatever you say, Mr. Greene. I’m yours."
"Forever?"
"And ever."
"And always."

I suppose they both needed to grow. Sometimes you really don't see what's right in front of you because you're not meant to see it. Because it's not the right time yet.
Was I upset at all the time they wasted, though? Yep. I really was.

"What do you want for the rest of your life?"
"You. Just you."

I almost don't see this as a second chance. It's a first all over again. Except this time, they have their eyes open and know what really matters.

When the most anticipated read ends up being the most disappointing 😭

This was literally my most anticipated book since i've read Rome and Harley's and this adorable girl Calista had a soccer rivalry with this cute boy Rylan. I mean i've read both series and i fucking lived for those calistarylan crumbs but man this was a horrible - terrible- i -want- it- erased from my memory book.

Please just let me think of these cute little kids who had a crush on each another and fought about who scored more goals because adult Calista and Rylan annoyed the fuck out of me. I literally needed to calm myself a few times since i wanted to strangle both of them.

We are talking about once in a lifetime, soulmate , its always been you love BUT in the course of this story they are more broken up than together (they're literally officially together in the last 5%), their 3 year relationship in college is just told in one flashback scene and just glossed over.
They are always just fucking when they are at the same place even tho they always say its painful for both of them but they are too stubborn to actually talk like the adults they are.
I mean they are 30 years old, 30!!!
They acted like freaking teenagers, who writes adult characters like this 😭😭

the writing was particularly bad with the weird flashbacks who were written so robotically. This is a second chance romance but where was the angst, the yearning, the jealousy??? even some of the dialogue felt so fake and unnatural.
the whole reason why they couldn't be together was the most absurd thing ever and honesty Harley her mom was the real queen here with the absolute truth.

"Exactly. With commitment to someone comes sacrifice. If you love him like you say you do, like I think you do, I see no reason why you can’t suck up a couple years in Chicago while he finishes his career. If you don’t love him enough to do that, then I have news for you, sweetie—you don’t really love him.”

And they weren't even celibate. Both of them always fucked other people but fucked each other without condom bc ✨️they are special✨️.

I wished both of them got chlamydia.

the only alternative ending i respect.

This book has been years in the making and OMG I absolutely LOVED IT!

Calista and Rylan for the win!

If you have been following my reviews you know I absolutely LOVED both THE BAILEYS and THE GREENE FAMILY Series from Piper Rayne and I believe I've mentioned a time or two how I couldn't wait to see what would happen between Calista (Bailey) and Rylan (Greene) and that's because they were weaved into both series as they grew up together.

I loved the premise of this book and I was looking forward to reading it.

Calista and Rylan had great chemistry and I believed in their connection.

The problem? I did not buy their reason for being apart. Neither of them were really sold on the idea of not being together and they let geography make the decision. That would work if both of them had careers that made moving impossible. But that wasn't the case here. A person isn't selfish for going where their professional sports career takes them. Not at all. And I kind of hated that parts of this seemed to be set to make Rylan think he was.

Yes Calista had some things happen that would make it hard, but that's where making an adult decision comes into play. She didn't love him enough to get past the hurt... until all of a sudden she did. And by all of a sudden I mean in the last 10% of the book even though it was obvious that she was just being stubborn.

But by that point I was annoyed with her for being so immature and there was nothing in the speech from her parents that wasn't both obvious and a conclusion she'd reached on her own. So why did the speech work that time? A combination of them saying goodbye to one another (again) and the fact that it was the end of the book. Nothing new was given. No mew reasons. And Calista's growth in the book wasn't enough to make me believe she would make a different choice this time.

So did I like this one? Yes? A definite maybe. Did I like Rylan? Yes. Did I like Calista? Sort of.

Do I believe in their connection and HEA? Yes. But this could have been a romance about 2 people who were together and working things out (which in my opinion would have been a lot better) and not about 2 people who loved one another but one of them constantly tossing up roadblocks.

This was less a second chance story and more of one about a man who waits for the woman he loves to grow up.

I'm definitely meh on this one and don't really recommend it just because I was so annoyed at one of the characters.

Piper Rayne has completely mesmerized me with their new second chance romance, The Problem With Second Chances (TPWSC). This story was emotional, raw, gripping and so powerful. I laughed, cried and devoured this story in one day. Rylan and Calista were beyond epic and left me dazzled beyond words.

What I loved more than anything was the fact that this story was full of moments that made me chuckle and smile, but also had times where my heart was filled with (temporary!) sadness for this amazing couple who loved each other so much but who got lost on their way to their HEA. The authors did an incredible job of painting a picture of a compelling couple with a powerful connection and a fiery chemistry who could not exist without one another. They had a soul-deep bond that could not be denied. They just needed a little reminder (and a nudge) for them to find their way back to one another and into each other's arms!

Overall, this story was beautiful, poignant and filled with moments and memories that took my breath away. TPWSC is beyond fantastic. It is timeless and will stay with me for a long time. Lake Starlight is clearly the place to be and I look forward to devouring all of the previous Bailey stories that take place in this glorious Alaska town! 5 Stars! Ratula ❤️

3 Calista and Rylan Stars

If you are a fan of second chance romances, then this is an enjoyable read.

Calista and Rylan have known each other since they were about 6 years old when they played soccer together. Their respective best friends date, so they are pretty much forced to interact with each other.
Both talented, each of them had bright futures in soccer and as they got older their dislike of each other changed to tolerance and then something much more. These two are like magnets , constantly drawn to each other. They reconnected during their College years and ended up living together with Rylan being drafted to a professional team but then Calista suffers a career ending injury and they end up splitting. This book picks up a few years later - they are both in their early 30's and Rylan returns to Alaska to attend their best friends wedding. All the passion sparks back to life but they both know Rylan will only be in town for a short while.

This was a good book but at times there was bit too much push and pull. I thought the humour balanced out the more serious aspects and the secondary characters are funny and bring another layer to the story. There are a lot of other books and series that interlink with this one and I am curious to read some. I've started with what I think is the newest generation so at times I had to really concentrate to link up who is related to who. I could have done with a family tree for Calista!

I mainly listened to the audio book - 5 Star Narration from Joe Arden and Erin Mallon. Listening time 6 hours and 20 minutes. I also borrowed the book on Kindle Unlimited (263 pages).

HEA? Yes
Cheating? No- both saw other people during the years they were apart but nothing significant.

The Problem with Second Chances was the first book in the Lake Starlight series by the authors Piper Rayne. It was one of many in the Baileys and Greene Family series.

Rylan was the youngest child within the Greene family and Calista was the oldest daughter of Rome and Harley Bailey (Birth of a baby daddy, book 3, Baileys). They met when they were young and both played soccer. We watched them grow up through both series with an on again, off again relationship. Rylan was a professional soccer star in Chicago and Calista was back home in Alaska with an end of career injury. I was looking forward to this book for a very long time.

I liked the premise of the storyline and the concept of both characters. I also liked that the authors took us back through the years with flashbacks to fill in the back story. And lastly, I really liked the ending. And as much as I liked all of those things, I was desiring more depth. I never really understood their break up and I needed more detail and emotion. There was a lot of sex, which I felt, but I needed more from them outside of the sex. Additionally, I didn’t realize Rylan had issues with his siblings, the authors mentioned it but it didn’t resolve and I needed more.

All in all, it was an entertaining read and I’m glad we finally got Rylan and Calista’s story. And even though I wanted more, it was still an enjoyable and worthy read. Up next is Calista’s cousin, Brinley, in The Issue With Bad Boy Roommates.

By Chapter 8, I was out. Run, Ryland,Run. Calista seems to have a REALLY big chip on her shoulder about Ryland being able to become a professional soccer player. It was annoying.

1. Not his fault the system is a mess and male athletes get paid more and have more opportunities. What was he supposed to do, NOT earn a living playing a game he loves so you wouldn’t be jealous and pissy?🙄

2. I don’t know yet why they broke up, but I’m guessing she didn’t want to leave her small town? Or her family? Because her business? Every client is a family member. She’s an accountant. She could get a job in Chicago where he plays.

3. I was too bored to continue.

If you want a good “right person, wrong time” second chance romance, I just finished a reread of The Crush by Karla Sorensen. That one worked better for me.

The Problem with Second Chances is a second chance, small town romance that is set in Alaska by Piper Rayne.

So I recently read my first book from this author duo and since I enjoyed it, I’ve been trying other books by them. I tried a hockey romance and then saw this small town romance so decided to give it a try. And it ended up just being okay for me.

Calista and Rylan grew up in the same small Alaskan town, they legit have known one another since they were like 5/6 years old. Overtime they grew apart and he left to become a professional soccer player while she stayed behind in the small town. Their mutual best friends are getting married and Calista is asked to be the maid of honor with Rylan asked to be the best man. So now they’re both around one another again and spending a lot of time together because of their friends’ upcoming wedding and all of that prep.

This was just okay for me. It is a shorter read so I was glad about that, I was pulled in by the pretty covers for this series but I don’t plan to continue on now. This author duo has a ton of their audios on hoopla so that was good at least.

What a beautiful story! I loved every minute of it!

My favorite second chance romance I've read in a long time! Start of a brand new series, I've been waiting for Rylan and Calista's book and it's finally here!

These two. Mm, they had their ups and downs. Wrong time kind of situation. They went their own ways once they went off to college. They're reunited when Rylan comes home after a break from his soccer career.

I have to say these two gave me all sorts of emotions. Very great story with spice, emotions, and small town shenanigans that it was very hard for me to put down!

I can't wait to get the next book! I definitely recommend!

So crazy to now be reading stories about the next generation. But this was a good choice to open up with. Loved the intermingling of the past characters and how the kids have grown up. This one is about becoming a pro athlete and learning to manage career, life and love. And the life choices that come with this type of career.

Star Rating : 4 / 5 Stars

POV : Dual

Cliffhanger : None

Hero : Rylan

Heroine : Calista

Pace of the story : Moderate

Angst Rating : 5/10

Heat Rating : 6/10

Plot Summary :
Calista has known Rylan her whole life. They have been enemies , friends, lovers and what not. Until one day it all ended and she was gone. But now due to her friend's marriage, she was back and so was he. The man she had always loved but the one who didn't want to choose her over other choices he had in his life.

Rylan always knew that one day his paths would cross with Calista. She was the one who got away and they always had this chemistry that no one could ever compete with in his life. Only she never chose him. What he didn't expect was for her to be much more infuriating and wanting Absolutely nothing with him.

Overall Opinion :
The moment I read the blurb for this story , I knew I had to have it. Piper is one of the authors who delivers some amazing contemporary romances and when it is a second chance , there was no way I was missing it for anything.

Calista and Rylan have had this crazy chemistry that their whole family could detect. But their story was left unsaid until now. Now they are both back to the very place that started it all and keeping their differences is becoming very tough.

The banter in this book is amazing and so is the plotline . The one thing that made this book a good read for me was the connection the characters had not only with each other , but with their families as well. It's like the whole big family were involved in getting them back together and that is the best part.

Definitely recommending this one to all the contemporary romance loving people out there.

If you are looking for a love story about two people destined to be together, then this story is for you. There is something so endearing about two people that have loved each other since childhood. The meddling grandmas in this story are absolutely perfect. The main characters have strong attraction and love for each other, but each wants different things in life. The story takes is through their journey of finding their way back to each other. The story ended perfectly and set up the next book great which I am off to read now!

Loved The Problem with Second Chances by Piper Rayne!

I enjoyed the storyline, it's well written, entertaining from start to end and watching Rylan and Calista's relationship unfold kept me tuning the pages late into the night as I couldn't put it down!

These two were destined to be together, but timing and life had other plans for them until now.
Coming back into each other's lives to celebrate their friends wedding brought out all the feels, the memories both good & bad bringing things to a head.
Can they continue ignoring what their heart wants?
Can they make their worlds come together and still follow their careers and desires without making the other give up on their dreams?

I promise you will love The Problem with Second Chances, it's a heartwarming second chance read and I highly recommend it.

What a great start to the new Lake Starlight series.

✔️ Small Town
✔️ Second Chance
✔️ Dual Pov
✔️ Sports Romance
✔️ Friends To Lovers

Amazing!!! This was my first soccer Romance and I LOVED it!! I love small towns and this one really shows how everyone knows everyone and everything that goes on and it made me giggle especially the old ladies. This was told both in Calista and Rylans pov's! They both grew up together, played soccer and thought that they would be together forever while both doing what they loved! But things didn't go the way it was supposed to do and Calista moved back home, now her best friend is getting married and Rylan is coming home because he's the best man. She had all intentions of avoiding him as much as she could but with a small town it's hard to do that.

This was a emotional (at times sad), powerful story of two people who were definitely soul mates who lost there way and just needed a little push to find there way back! Such a great story and can't wait to read the next one!

this was like something years in the making like imagine two separate (long ass) series later, and this was the product of it. to me, it was lowkey underwhelming and did not hit the way i thought it would since the potential was always there for rylan and calista.

The Problem with Second Chances is the book Piper Rayne readers have been waiting for. This romance is the long-teased story of Calista Bailey and Rylan Greene, linking everyone’s favorite small town Alaska families. Even with all the anticipation, this book delivers a satisfying second chance romance and a fantastic kickoff to the next generation series.

Calista and Rylan have been in an on and off relationship for most of their lives. Now firmly in the off stage, Calista lives in Lake Starlight while Rylan plays professional soccer in Chicago. But they are forced together when they are asked to be the maid of honor and best man in their besties’ wedding. But after weeks of wedding prep, from cake tasting to slide shows, can they ignore their stronger-than-ever mutual attraction? Especially when their friends and family keep nudging them back together?

I adored this story and these families! Calista and Rylan’s romance is told through a series of flashbacks and present day scenes, showing where the characters are and how they got there. Emotional moments take center stage, with lots of angst to go around. There are tons of hilarious scenes too, including some light breaking and entering, and a trip to everyone’s favorite retirement home. But, don’t worry, Rylan and Calista follow through on their sizzling chemistry too.

I’ve been waiting to read Calista and Rylan’s story for ages. But even with breadcrumbs dropped in so many earlier books, this romance works as a stand alone and start of a new series. And, I love the hints of whose story is up next too!

It’s tough to pull off an amazing romance when longtime readers have been clamoring for it for ages. But with The Problem With Second Chances, Piper Rayne delivers on Calista and Rylan’s story. This book is filled with lots of angst, steam, and small town romance goodness that I couldn’t put down until the very last page.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

So it is no secret that I am absolutely, positively obsessed with anything Piper Rayne, Bailey and Greene family!! So to say I was ECSTATIC to have a second gen crossover is an understatement!!
Y’all, this book, READ it!

I have been salivating for this story for a very long time. Two of my favorite families crossing over!?? From the moment I had the official word, all chill was gone. Baby Rylan and Calista are all grown up and bringing swoon, steam and then some! Their story was everything I could’ve hope for and more.

Piper Rayne brought on all the feels with this one. Some losses I knew were coming but still didn’t ease the pain of it happening. But, of course being a Bailey and Greene family crossover, absolute hilarity was bound to ensue so soon my sad tears turned into tears from the belly laughs from all the entertaining shenanigans galore. Rylan and Calista’s story starts at the end, (or what we think is the end). They were the couple everyone bet their money on but sometimes life has its on plans. But, the love, the longing, the care these two had for each other had never faded. It was clear to anyone who spent just a second in their presence that they were meant to be. I love the flashbacks filled with both happy and sad moments, it took me as a reader on their journey of coupledom from the beginning to now. I devoured The Problem With Second Chances with enthusiasm. I just could not put this story down.

The audio?? Oh the audio was chef’s kiss perfection!! Two of my absolute faaaaves; Erin Mallon and Joe Arden? Their names alone is enough said but what a flawless performance and a definite must listen!

The wait for Calista and Rylan’s story did not disappoint! I have been dying for this story for so long and it was just as good as I knew it would be! The angst was to the MAX in this story and I was share for it!

It was very emotional at times but that made it feel so much more real. This book had all the tropes I’m a sucker for: second chance, friends to lovers, small town, and sports romance.

The Grandma Crew 2.0 had me rolling! I love them and their shenanigans! The way the families come together to help these two heal and find their happily ever after was perfect. It was so nice to see so many of the couples from the original two series.

I enjoyed this story so much and already can’t wait for the next one!

Grateful to have received a complimentary ARC copy to honestly review.

rylan and calista's story has always been a curious one since i actually knew of them when they were younger. they started from enemies to friends to lovers and the love-hate relationship when they were older showed a change in their feelings. rylan has always thought that chicago is the place for him and that he only had soccer once calista left his life and remained in alaska. however, as he grew older, he realized that he's missing out a chance of a great love if he just leave things as it is.

i had so much fun! it's a short book but we got flashbacks of calista and rylan in the past from when they were teenagers exchanging snarky comebacks to when they were older and thinking about each other to when them currently having this back and forth. great start to a new series!

The Problem with Second Chances by Piper Rayne is a second chance romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Erin Mallon and Joe Arden. This is the first book in the Lake Starlight series.

I love Piper's books! I really enjoyed how this book was set up with us getting Rylan and Calista's current story but doing the flash backs over the span of sixteen years. I loved that we got both of their points of views throughout the book. It really brought the story to life.

I can't wait for the next book in the series The Issue with Bad Boy Roommates to be released on June 27, 2023.

Joe and Erin did a great job on the narration. I look forward to listening to more of their work in the future.

I would recommend this book if you like second chance romances, small town romances, sports romances, or contemporary romances.

So I have mixed feeling about this one. One the one hand, these two loved each other but were more on and off than steadily together. There is a realness in this story because both of them were too stubborn to compromise. Mistakes were made over and over but they kept coming back to each other because the love was there. It would turn into a cycle of miscommunication, not communicating at all, or just flat out not compromising even though they claimed they loved each other. They also didn’t try to get any help with it either, they just tried to ignore it and hope things worked out.

By the end of the book (last 30 minutes) they just miraculously decided that they would talk and compromise. It was slightly frustrating because it felt like so much drama for no reason. Yet, you start thinking in terms of real people and there have been a few friends who’d vent to me and I’d give advice that they promptly ignored but the following week they’d be right back in my house complaining about the same thing. That is what reading this book felt like…. EVERY person trying to talk and give them hints of how to be together throughout the book and both of them ignoring it saying no no it won’t work without actually talking to each other about it. Between that and the flashbacks of their relationship intertwined with the hurt and depression after each failed try kind of left me sad at the end.

Overall, it was written well but my mood after reading plays a part in my rating and I’m left with a heavy heart and in a mood about the span of their relationship, even though I am glad they finally are together.

4 Second Chance Stars!

“You’re mine.” “And I’m yours. No matter what you might think, there is no one besides you.”

The Problem with Second Chances follows the story of Rylan and Calista and is a roller coaster ride of emotion that I won’t be forgetting anytime soon.

From the moment I picked up this book, I was utterly consumed by Rylan and Calista’s story. You could tell that there was some deep history between them and it only made me want to know their story more. Rylan and Calista’s story is filled with pain and heartache and was the perfect example of the right person, wrong time. The timing always seemed to be off for these two and despite how strong their love and connection was, stubbornness got in the way and led them both down a road of pain and heartache.

The road to happily ever after for these two was filled with all kinds of bumps and angst, but with a little help from some good-intentioned family members, these two just might have the chance to make things right. I enjoyed everything about this story from beginning to end and couldn’t help but fall head over heels for Rylan and Calista.

*I was provided an ARC copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review*

I have been dying to get Rylan and Calista’s story since the Bailey series and it did not disappoint! This book had my emotions all over the place and I absolutely loved every second of it. When I find a book from Piper Rayne I think is my favorite, they are able to write another amazing story and blow me away every single time. I absolutely loved this story and could not put it down. The love between Rylan and Calista just pours off the pages. I’m beyond excited for the rest of this series!
