Kai Rinaldi was at the top of his game. After an illustrious career in the Marines, Kai and his best friend founded RAM Securities, a private security company specializing in the jobs that the government and law enforcement couldn’t or wouldn’t take on. It wasn’t long until RAM Securities was a multi-million dollar company and at forty years old, Kai was the go-to man for the most dangerous and dirtiest jobs in the country. But even with all of his experience, nothing could prepare him for the day he met Aspen.
Aspen Malling had a really rough start to his life, but finally, at 22, he could see the light at the end of the tunnel. He and his siblings managed to get free from their father and uncle, and he had a job that he loved as a hacker and computer expert for RAM. His growing feelings for Kai may be unrequited, but that was fine. He had more in his life than he ever thought possible.
When a particularly bad case ties to Aspen’s past, the two men realize that the peace they have experienced over the last few years may be over. As the situation gets more dangerous, Kai begins to have feelings for Aspen that may be more than just platonic. But, with so many obstacles standing in the two men’s way, not to mention the danger lurking just around the corner, Kai must decide if it’s worth pursuing a relationship with the much younger man, or are they better off going their separate ways?
Surviving the Storm is Book One in the RAM Securities duet. This ends in a cliffhanger for the plot and an HFN for the MCs. The series will continue with Saving his Sunshine and will end with a HEA. This is a dark contemporary M/M romance that features a boss/employee, an age gap, and a slow burn D/s relationship.
Content Warning: Surviving the Storm contains darker elements including child abuse, sex trafficking, non-con and dub-con(not between the main characters), PTSD, and past trauma. It also features a consensual D/s relationship between the two MC's. Please see the content warning in the book for further details.
Jacey is an M/M and Fantasy/Paranormal fiction writer. She's a Jersey girl through and through, and after a brief time in North Carolina, is back in New Jersey with her husband, two daughters, and her black lab mix. When she's not writing, Jacey is catching up on Netflix shows, reading, and most of all, playing with (aka chasing after) her kids.
The good + Aspen's strength in taking care of his siblings + The way the past was described. It brought the terrible truth across, without being unnecessarily descriptive or vulgar + The bond between Sage and Aspen + The siblings. They all have a personality, even those who had only a little 'screen time' + Both men pressing about consent, and how it goes both ways, even in a D/s dynamic + The conversation on likes and limits + Kai going all-in, and admitting his fears, when he finally decides he wants Aspen too + This book had over twenty side characters, easily. I only confused a few of them sometimes, which is damn impressive for such a long list + The author clearly stated the book would end on a cliffhanger. Such warnings are always appreciated + The trigger warnings for the entire duology, instead of just this book. It would be such a pity if someone started this book and couldn't read the second one
The neutral o I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. My review remains honest and unbiased o For a professional and high-end company, it all seemed pretty disorganized. A CEO who's bad with computers is a disaster waiting to happen. The way jobs were accepted and divided seemed random and inefficient. There was a permanent lack of personnel, yet they decided to expand. It felt more like a small start-up than the elite company they claimed to be
The bad - Kai's statement about "babysitting" Aspen. Just a few days prior, he'd told Aspen he could always come to him to talk about anything. The first time ever Aspen takes him up on the offer, he gets rebuked harshly. Aspen didn't deserve that, and Kai's excuse about creating distance was bullshit. There's a difference between backing off a bit and pushing someone away - This book contained far too many editing errors for a book that's already been published. I hope future books by this author will be edited better
Quotes x Sure, they were both wrecks some days, but they could be wrecks together.
As the author warned the reader, this book ends on a cliffhanger. I can't wait for the sequel. The story is engaging, and the relationship is promising now that it's finally starting to blossom. I can't wait until Forrest finds out. I'll wait until I've read the second book before I recommend it to anyone, because it's definitely a duology and not a standalone. But this first installment is very promising.
This was an excellent start to the two books. I love the plot I love the two MC’s. Lots of things happening in the background that has me intrigued also. Like what’s Jason been up to? There is a D/s relationship happening but it’s mild so do understand that before you read. I think this book would have did well with a reread to catch some of the writing mistakes because there were several. It didn’t hinder the story for me though. The smexy, the start of it was HAWT. Excited about the next story and glad it’s a continuation of these two Characters.

I was feeling like suspense romance so I picked up SURVIVING THE STORM and quickly read through it. Kai and Aspen are both likable characters and I enjoyed seeing the start of their relationship which ends on a HFN and continues into book 2.
Kai was a protective Dom with a hard exterior and a soft heart; he doesn't realize at first that he's been falling for Aspen but once he does he goes all in. After a horrific childhood, Aspen has worked hard to turn his life around and he has a job he loves, a safe place for his siblings, and a crush on his much older boss, Kai. Together these two were really sweet and I loved how Kai always checked in with Aspen and how they both valued consent so much because of the power dynamics and Aspen's past.
This book has a lot of dark themes but Aspen and Kai's relationship is filled with lots of hope. As for the suspense plot, it was fairly straightforward if a bit predictable.
Content Warning: past child abuse, torture, and child sex trafficking; on page PTSD

"But at the end of the day, we wear these scars with pride. We keep our heads held high and dare anyone to try to put us down for our past. That’s because you and me, we’re fighters, Aspen. And all these scars show me is that you’ve been fighting one hell of a battle and still come out kicking in the end."
This book kept me on my toes from the beginning! The pacing and plot line is exciting, and it doesn’t get boring at all.
Broken characters and a bit possessiveness is my favourite to read, and the author wrote it so well! My heart broke for both of them, and I just adore the way Kai cares for Aspen.
This is a fantastic age gap story, definitely with some Domdaddy in the mix. Sizzling hot, and I’m a huge fan of Kai’s bedroom talk!
Although it fits the story, and is probably more realistic, I would have liked to read more scenes with the two main characters. But I’ll probably get that in book two! Which I can’t wait to read by the way!
I’m such a huge fan of first kisses, and the kiss between these two left me breathless.
Former Marine Kai Rinaldi: started RAM Securities with best friend Martinez to specialise in the jobs that the government and law enforcement couldn’t, or wouldn’t take on. It wasn’t an easy road, but now we’re the first stop for any person or any government that needed a job done efficiently and discreetly. But even with everything I’ve seen in my life, nothing prepared him for the day he met Aspen Malling. After years of living under the brutal control of his father and uncle, he and his siblings were free. His younger brother and sister actually had a chance at a normal life, and the older kids were adjusting. Mostly. At least he had a job he loved as a technical expert with RAM and control over his own life. Sure, his growing feelings for Kai were unrequited, but that was fine. Then, everything changed, new information tied one of their cases to his past, shattering the illusion of safety. But as the danger grew, so did his feelings for Kai. At least they aren’t as one-sided as he initially thought. With so many obstacles standing in their way, not to mention the danger lurking just around the corner, they have to decide if it was worth pursuing a relationship, or were they better off going their separate ways?
I loved this story. The scene was set well and I felt real empathy for Aspen and his siblings. I loved the drama in the story around the abduction and trafficking. Aspen was adorable and I loved his eventual relationship with Kai. Easy to read, feel and understand. This was an MM story with mature content and a BDSM-like D/s dynamic.
‘All I’m trying to say is that we all got our own scars, both physical and mental. Having doubts about them or struggling sometimes, that’s ok. Hell, I still do. But at the end of the day, we wear these scars with pride. We keep our heads held high and dare anyone to try to put us down for our past. That’s because you and me, we’re fighters, Aspen. And all these scars show me is that you’ve been fighting one hell of a battle and still come out kicking in the end.”
Jacey Davis has reworked Surviving the Storm, and though I had not read the original I enjoyed the sensitive, and sometimes steamy, storyline.
There are several warnings that should be taken seriously, as several forms of past abuse are pivotal to Aspen’s life and Kai’s and Aspen’s developing relationship.
There is a lot of sweetness between these two, as the first part of this book duet introduces their backgrounds and shows the beginning stages of a long held love attraction.
Jacey Davis really knows how to write stories that make you feel - all the feels. I cried with sorrow and was so anxious for Aspen and his siblings. Their backstory really tugged at my heartstrings. And my stomach clenched as Kai and Aspen were trying to find their way. Then I cheered and cried with joy when they did found their way. It was the moment where I sighed so loudly.
In addition to all the feels, Surviving The Storm is incredibly well-written with amazing characters (including side characters like Bella, whom I just loved). The story also ticked all my boxes. I loved the pining on Aspen's part for Kai. It was just what I was looking for. And to boot, it has age gap between the two - almost twenty years. It has mystery, hurt/comfort and it was unpredictable.
I want more from this author! They have amazing talent!
Surviving the Storm is definitely the perfect title for this book. And a storm it is - A young man Aspen being an the older of 5 siblings next to him was his brother Sage they survive the worst of humanity the hands of a father and a uncle rescued by Kai and his best friend and partner in the security firm RAM . The storm is the older boys Aspen and Sage did all they could do to protect their three younger siblings from the horrors of the father and uncle. Kai and Martinez got them out and none to soon. This story takes you on twist and turn and a beautiful love entanglement between Kai and Aspen. If you love BDSM and MM romance you need to read this and follow them in Saving His Sunshine book 2 of RAM Securities. Do Heed The Trigger Warnings and grab your tissues. You will need them. This is Available on Amazon and KU.
First thing to know- this book (and I'm assuming the rest in the series) are dark. What happens to Aspen and his family is really, really hard to read, so mind the trigger warnings. I really liked how the author didn't sugar coat the lasting affecting both Aspen and Kai (due to very different reasons) have with PTSD.
That said, I really enjoyed this book and the second in the series. The books were well paced, exciting, sexy and kept my attention. I was rooting for Kai and Aspen the whole time and really appreciated that once they got together, they were together. No silly relationship drama or angst- it was them (and their found family) against the world.
This book and the next do need a quick proofreading though. Nothing horrible- but enough missing / wrong punctuation, quotation marks, etc - that it jarred me out of the story.
A great start to this series RAM Securities. The author introduces us to characters that you get invested into and want to see have a happy ending. Kai runs a security company and Aspen is someone that his company rescued and is now one of his employees. This is their story of coming to turns with they feelings and see how to navigate through them. Aspen has a rough childhood and it is coming back to hurt him and his sibling again, Kai and his team will make sure they are protected. The story is an interesting one, the characters are engaging and fit well together. You will be left wondering what will happen next. This is a new author for me and I am looking forward to read the next book.
gosh, I couldn't put his down. it was gripping from the start. Aspen and his siblings were abused for years by his dad and uncle until one day they were saved by his brave younger brother getting help.
4 years later they are starting to get their lives back to normal under new identities. Aspen works for RAM security as a hacker and tech guy, he's been in love with his saviour Kai since the beginning but there is an 18 year age gap and he was abused badly so Kai hadn't even entertained the idea of starting anything.
When they get word of a new case of children needing saving, they realise that Aspen's dad and Uncle must be involved and they fight to find them before its too late.
it ends on a cliffhanger but luckily book 2 is out so I can just jump in!
The perfect start to the series. Aspen and his siblings had my heart breaking as I read all that they had been through at the hands of their father and uncle.
Aspen was given a ray of sunshine when he met Kai. He was able to get the love and support he had always wished for and the added safety net he had craved.
The journey Kai and Aspen go through as they explore their connection and their feelings for each other was heart melting to read. They both worked to make their relationship something they were both content with. I love all of the characters. The security, banter and the bond between them all was incredible.
Excellent new series. Kai, and his bf, Jason created RAM Securities. The Vets created a company that did the wet work many other entities could not. Aspen, worked for RAM as a hacker. He was only 22, but he has lived what seemed lime many lifetimes surviving his Father and Uncle while protecting his siblings. Kai, saved Aspen and his siblings. Aspen, secretly hard crushed on Kai. This is an absolutely exciting action/adventure/romance that keeps us, the readers on our toes, engaged and fully satisfied in the story. Great characters and nice introduction to the found family. Very well done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book is a MUST read if you like your romance with suspense and thrilling cliffhangers. An absolute MUST!!!
I started my reading with Jacey Davis with On The Run. When Kai and Aspen appeared in that book, I was so curious about them. Little did I know that they had their own books. Once you are captivated by a set of characters, all you want to do is read more about them. This book surprised me, enchanted me, and blew me away with the ending. I would say more, but really this book needs no spoilers just your time and attention. I’m so excited for Saving His Sunshine. I can’t wait to start it in the morning!
Honestly, it took so much determination for these siblings to survive such horrific events at the hands of those they were supposed to trust.
It takes a special kind of mate for them and Aspen was the first when he met Kai. Being able to let some of his guard down as a protector and caretaker, wasn't easy.
Fair warning, the triggers are front and center in this book, but are important to the overall story line.

This is the start of a new series RAM Securities, Kai and his best friend founded the company after serving in the marines. it is not long before the company is thriving. Nothing prepares him for Aspen, who is almost half his age.
Aspen has had a rough life, but finally things are starting to get better for him and his siblings. He works at RAM as a hacker and has feelings for the boss, Kai.
This is part of a duet and ends with cliffhanger. This book will give you all the feels.
I received an Advance Readers Copy of this book with no obligation to write a review.
My heart was all over the place for Aspen! He has a tough life, but he is still able to present a sunny attitude. He is especially sunny for Kai! I wanted Kai for him so bad! I did enjoy that the relationship took a realistic time to build. Kai totally cared for Aspen, but he tried to hold back given everything going on around them. When these two finally figure it out though they are all in. A D's dynamic is building and I getting ready to start their second book to see how they bond even further.
they just spoke in massive chunks of texts like damn stop spitting pointless info at me and hello can we talk about Bella baiting out Aspen and tell her bro about Aspen's feelings towards him? idc idc that's weird to do bc you lowk forced them into an awkward position
even so, Kai was an ass during that period for no apparent reason it was just like shoved in there shit didn't make any sense with his character
this book felt like skin and bones- no meat to it and hardly any depth... sigh Reddit recs really be a hit or miss gng 💔
Loving the start of this series. My heart broke for Aspen and his siblings, but Kai seemed to bring Aspen the safety net he has always wanted. These two have so much to explore with each other, to develop their relationship into something comfortable, safe and so much more. All of the characters are amazing, love security romance and this one will tug at your heartstrings on all sides. Looking forward to whats to come.
First off, there were a lot of errors in this book that would have been caught by a proofreader, and it didn't always make for smooth reading. But, I really enjoyed the story which kept me fully engaged despite the typos etc. I loved that Jacey's trigger warnings covered both books in the duet, thus ensuring you didn't get invested then couldn't read the second book because of different triggers. I also liked that it was made perfectly clear that it was a duet with a cliffhanger, as one of my pet peeves is not knowing that. There was a lot of content in this story, instead of the waffle you get in a lot of books these days. Kai's history was touched on but Aspen's history was far more complex, distressing and important to the story, and I appreciated that it was woven in organically rather than info-dumped in one big wodge. I loved Aspen and his siblings but Kai needed to get his head out of his arse at the beginning, though he did get better. The other characters were distinct and added to the story. I liked Mads and need to see more of Martinez. That cliffhanger happened when I expected it to and was about what I expected it to be but I had no idea it was going to be what it was. Shocking in its delivery, it really packed a punch. I need to read Saving His Sunshine now.
This was everything I wanted from a hurt/comfort book about an abused guy finding love.
I was so pleasantly surprised by the amount of hurt/comfort: we have PTSD - panic attacks, flinching, nightmares, low self-esteem, scars (bodily but also mental), found family, gentle giant worshipping his boy. So if you are looking for a survivor who is still affected by the abuse he went through, this is it! The fainting, panic attacks, tears, and memories (though the memories are mainly about violence rather than anything sexual... that is only hinted at) were painful but I love it in books. Most of the angst is outside the couple which I loooove!
I really loved the relationship development - it is on the slower side, but it is absolutely necessary! The men are slowly finding out their limits and boundaries, kinks (yes, I love a D/s dynamic!), but also feelings that are absolutely mutual. The story ends in HFN in the relationship department, but the story is a bit cliffy.
Only issues with the book I had were about the writing - there were some grammar errors, one chapter is weirdly formatted, some sentences and idioms are overused (multiple characters saying "fucking A" or Kai pulling his head out of his ass...) that was a bit too overused and showed lack of creativity. Sometimes the word "sweetheart" was overused, but I guess it shows how down bad Kai is...?
I am really looking forward to the continuation - both in the suspense and relationship. I think the next one will be way angstier (hopefully not between the couple).
This is book 1 in the RAM Securities series. This is an amazing story. It will grab you from page one and keep you reading until the book is finished. Be aware - it ends on a cliff hanger. Buy book 2 before you start. You will not want to stop reading. This is the story of Aspen Malling and Kai Rinaldi. As the blurb will tell you, Aspen's life was living hell with his father and uncle. The book starts in earnest when Aspen is working for Kai in his security business. Aspen is like a ray of sunshine that brightens up the room. Kai is his big boss. He is part owner of the security business. He is also the man that Aspen trusts and fantasizes about. Kai will do everything in his power to keep Aspen and his family safe and happy. And if he becomes too attached to Aspen, he just reminds himself how much older he is than Aspen. This is their story. I loved the chemistry and affection between Kai and Aspen. Your heart will heart as you learn all that Aspen and his brother have been through. And when Aspen's life is thrown into disarray; Kai and his team are there to help keep him safe. This book is very well written and easy to read. The story line and suspense build up beautifully to the cliff hanger. You will want to read book 2 straight away to find out what happens and how.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is a new author to me and I will be reading more of her books in the future. This book was action packed with Aspen working as a hacker, after he and his siblings were rescued by RAM Securities, which was founded by Kai and his bff after their honorable discharge from the Marines. Aspen and his brother Sage were physically abused and sex trafficked by their father and uncle. Please read the trigger warnings as there are a lot. Despite all the things Aspen has been through, he manages to break through Kai's hard shell to the point where they both agree to attempt a relationship. Just as things are going well, Aspen's past comes back and the whole RAM team will need to rally to protect Aspen and his siblings and catch the bad guys. This book ends on a cliffhanger which is not my favorite, but since the next book is available I'm good. This is also a slow burn romance between Kai and Aspen, which is understandable given Aspen's circumstances, so don't be disappointed if you're looking for lots of sexy times. Their story continues in the next book. This book had all my favorite tropes and then some.
The story gets a 3.5 ⭐ but there was a lot of grammar, spelling and other misc errors in the story and it distracted me from the story and sometimes I wish I could read some of these books to help with these types of mistakes because it makes the story flow better when the grammar, spelling and everything is correct.
Aspen & Kai
Aspen is a 22 y/o who was forced to work in the sex trade by his Father & Uncle. Kai was on the team that rescued him. Their bond formed back then when Kai felt a responsibility to not only Aspen but also his siblings. He gave them safety, security and family and helped to keep them safe.
I'm not a big fan of 3rd party POV. This is a personal preference but it does sometimes take me out of a story and can impact my enjoyment because I don't feel as connected to the characters. I deeply care about both Kai & Aspen and I'm eager to learn what happens in their next story. Obviously the good in the story outweighed the grammar and spelling issues, but the story was worth it in the end. This isn't overly spicy IMO and was a slow burn.
Kai and Aspen were absolutely great together. Both have not so great pasts which causes them problems. Aspen has been pining for Kai and has resigned himself to a one sided relationship. Kai is very much interested in Aspen but he's torn over their boss/employee status and the age gap between them. When he does get on board with something happening between them, the resulting D/s dynamic was scorching hot. Aspen and his brothers are very much still in danger and Kai is adamant they'll never be hurt again on his watch. I can't get enough of these two and I'm looking forward to seeing their relationship progress in the next installment.
I don't know what I was expecting when I started this book but this was not it. And I mean that in the best of ways. This book was amazing. From start to finish. I loved how Kai was with Aspen. He was always so gentle. Aspen's story is so heartbreaking. Along with his siblings. He spent so much time caring for them that he forgot to care about himself. But Kai swooped in and cared for him. It really was sweet. I appreciated the talk about limits and that Kai constantly checked with Aspen. The ending was a giant cliffhanger that made me want to jump into the next book immediately. Overall amazing book. Nice balance between side plots and the romance. Highly recommend.
Well written story and well developed characters! Those are the most important attributes, to me, in a book. This one sucked me right in and didn't let go! Can't wait to get started on the next one!
