The first book of the Neverborne series titled Kingfall by indie author Ezekiel Eversand definitely exceeded my expectations. As someone who has only dipped their toes into fantasy and never fully committed to the genre, I was surprised by how quickly and deeply I was pulled into this world. From the very beginning, the story feels carefully written, layered, and intentional, and it never loses pace.
Eversand’s writing is incredibly intelligent and descriptive without feeling overwhelming. Every character feels real vivid and distinct, and you can clearly picture them in your mind without the descriptions ever slowing the story down. The multi-POV format adds so much depth, letting you see how different choices, loyalties, and consequences collide in ways that feel brutal and realistic. This is not a story where characters feel safe—because Mr.Eversand is absolutely not afraid to kill off major characters , which raises the stakes and keeps you constantly on edge.
I don’t want to spoil anything because this is truly a story you should experience for yourself, but if you enjoy adult epic dark fantasy, immersive world-building, and morally complex characters, this book will absolutely deliver. It’s dark, gory, emotionally intense, and full of cliffhangers that make it almost impossible to put down. The tension never really lets up, and there were multiple moments where my heart was racing.
This is planned to be a 10-book series, and after finishing the first one, I am going to immediately jump into book two. That being said, this is NOT a light or fast read. You need to make time for it. Every detail matters, and this is a book that rewards you for slowing down and fully absorbing the world, the magic, and the politics at play. The magic system in particular feels completely unique—nothing like I’ve read, and it’s clear he built it from the ground up.
Overall, Neverborne is complex, intense, and incredibly well written. It’s unlike anything I’ve read before, and I mean that in the best possible way. If you’re willing to commit the time and energy, I guarantee you’ll be hooked within the first chapter
