For centuries the Sentinel Eyrie has stood watch over the Maw, the foul lair of the Voice and its monstrous servants. Long have the dishonoured and the damned journeyed to the Eyrie in search of restored honour. Shamil, disgraced warrior from the southern desert, has journeyed to the Eyrie seeking redemption for a terrible crime. To earn it he must win the trust of a Great Wing, one of the mighty birds that carry the sentinels into battle. But such trust is not easily won, and the Voice is rising... Fire Wings is a soaring fantasy adventure from the New York Times bestselling author of the Raven's Shadow trilogy.
Anthony Ryan was born in Scotland in 1970 but spent much of his adult life living and working in London. After a long career in the British Civil Service he took up writing full time after the success of his first novel Blood Song, Book One of the Raven’s Shadow trilogy. He has a degree in history, and his interests include art, science and the unending quest for the perfect pint of real ale.
What's the story about:Fire Wings follows a small group of individuals on a journey to atone for significant sins by attempting to join the great Sentinels. In hopes of finding a place amongst the outcast brotherhood, they must go through trials to see if they are worthy.
Fire Wings was exactly what I wanted from the story's synopsis. This is a fantastic fantasy adventure that fits well within the confines of a shorter page length that perfectly balances world-building to fit the narrative and scope of the story. The plot is easygoing, enjoyable, and exciting, the characters are distinct and interesting, and all other aspects seemed to balance with the shorter length. Progression is tight and focused and while this story definitely gives way to a larger narrative, it's very well concluded by the end. Whether this one continues with more stories or ends here, I definitely recommend checking this novella out!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but feel that as the series progresses I will come to be more engaged. Thus I look forward to the next book. I do feel the storyline has great potential. The main character is interesting but the story was short enough that I didn’t really get a full feel for him. Not sure what to think of the magic system as not clearly defined at this point. I hate to say it but missed the potential love story. Never felt anyone develop any true connection. I never bonded enough to characters in the story that I felt a wrench in my heart when they died.
As always, a gripping, action packed ending from Ryan. I’m actually quite embarrassed it took me so long to read but I was reluctant as I know his (Ryan’s) calibre and I didn’t want it over that quickly! Anyway, well balanced and equally as good as the sagas- in fact, probably better because it cut out any extraneous cuck and got right to the point! Read this!!
Probably in the top 5 best fight narrations that I’ve ever read. Mind you I’m 41 and I’ve been reading fantasy novels since I was 10 and typically finish one a week on average. Really exciting. You won’t be disappointed.
A shortish novella but still a satisfying read. Ryan knows how to write good characters and good action. The aerial combat was executed very nicely and the magic system really intrigued me. I hope this gets expanded to a standalone series.
Really liked the premise of this story and have found that I like the relationship dynamic that Anthony Ryan bakes into his books. Also really like the protagonists from this book and previous ones.
4.5 stars 🌟. This one took me by surprise. An interesting and compelling short novella with a varied cast of characters who feel real and fleshed out in less than 100 pages. I would love to return to this world at some point in the future.
