This is book one of the Bronte Security Services, a security firm formed by three friends and former Navy SEALs, Ian, Charlie Bronte, who the firm is named after, and Eric, who all worked on the same SEAL team. When their CO Charlie retired and wanted to set up a security firm, they joined him soon after, along with a formidable front desk, admin person in Rosa, who keeps everyone in line! The main characters in this story are Ian Campbell and Sofia Popov, his son Gavin’s high school chemistry teacher. They first meet when her friend Karen has her come with her when she is on a Tinder date, just in case her date Eric doesn’t show or she needs rescuing. It turns out that Karen’s red-headed date has done something similar, bringing along Ian, just in case his date doesn’t go for redheads! Turns our Eric and Karen are happy to hook up and leave soon after, leaving Sofia to get home alone, until Ian confirms he will see her home safely. Ian and Sofia hook up for a one night stand, neither of them wanting anything else, as both have been damaged by their childhood upbringings. Sofia has seen the struggle her mother went through after her husband kicked them both out of the family home after he decided to move someone else in, and how hard it was for her mother to adapt, having never worked before. Ian was raised by a very strict military father and was forced to never show emotion and this has caused him issues in his relationship with his teenage son.
Next time they meet, is in a hospital, after fourteen year old Gavin collapsed and had a fit after sneaking out to smoke an MDMA laced marijuana cigarette. Luckily for them, Gavin dropped the remainder of the cigarette when he collapsed and Sofia bagged it, knowing it was evidence. Her former experience in a lab means she can test it for other substances and is aware of the link to other teenagers needing hospital after smoking marijuana and one even dying at a party. Ian is shocked to see Sofia, especially in this type of situation and finds it hard to believe his own son is dabbling with drugs. His son usually lives with his mother, and his ex-wife had remarried but was having issues with a visa for her German husband, so Gavin had to stay with Ian, until she could sort this out. He hasn’t had much interaction with is son, always being away on missions during his childhood and they are treading carefully around each other. Ian offers the use of his security company to follow up on her suspicions, after the police don’t even bother recording her initial complaint. She spots a former student dealing on the edge of the school grounds and accosts him, but is soon targeted. She brings all the evidence to Ian at his firm and he brings in Charlie and Eric, all of them having specialised skills which form a whole when investigating cases. Afterwards, Sofia stops to speak to Ian, on a more personal manner, as she breaks the news that she believes she is two months pregnant and he is the father! Although shocked to start, he soon gets excited, wondering if this will give him a fresh start to raise a child and do all the things he missed out on with Gavin.
Sofia isn’t giving up and matters escalate quickly, with her home and life in danger, when it becomes clear a nasty cartel are behind the expanding drugs swarming the high school and area and San Diego in general. They want her silenced and aren’t bothered about using extreme violence against her and anyone else in their way. When in danger, the only person she can think to call is Ian and he offers her a safe place to stay, with him and Gavin, in his home, where he can keep her close and protect her, while all this is going on. They get a lot closer and gel in the bedroom, but outside of it, he clashes with her when she tries to intervene with his parenting of Gavin, especially when they both get very heated and loud at each other. She tries to explain Gavin’s feelings of getting used to this new situation of being placed with his dad and a new stepfather to get to know, all with little choice of his own. But Ian isn’t happy for her to use her teaching experience to try and work with Gavin to ease relationships. The news of a new baby brother or sister, leaves Gavin feeling betrayed and even more alone. Acting out is normal as a teenager, but Gavin certainly takes it to the extreme and emotions get the better of both adults. Taking his eye off the ball, soon sees Sofia in severe danger again, this time so much worse than ever before, as the cartel take action to make an example of her. Ian Charlie and Eric will have to work quickly to save Sofia and stop this danger to teens and others in the city of San Diego.
A love story that doesn’t take a very normal route, bringing in the battle against the ever expanding reach of drugs in the community and the criminals behind it all. As well as the struggles of teens in the modern world, childhood issues and their effects on later life, and the problems with relationships in modern life with so many blended families. A well written story, where a one night stand quickly becomes something more, but mixed with danger and growth of both main characters as they have to adjust their expectations which were so badly damaged by their pasts, and grow into a joint new future all together.
