A teacher is found tangled in an air filter. It seems like an ordinary case for Detective Brett Knucks and his partner Genius. All that changes when someone steals the body and returns it without his organs. Why does Brett keep getting the weird cases? As the pair tries to figure out the mystery, their relationship deepens. Genius is sure he’s falling in love while Brett’s still too bruised from past boyfriends.
The body of a public school teacher is found in an air filter, bruising and the indentation of someone’s ring on his chest indicating he was pushed which makes it a case of murder, and it's up to Detective Brett Knucks and his inventor partner, Chris Genius, to find the killer. But the body is stolen as Nax, the medical examiner, and Genius wheel it outside to the van.
When they talk to the victim’s spouse, he said his husband was on a school trip. But when Brett called to get more information, he was told Mr. Garcia was let go the previous year during budget cuts and hasn’t worked for the school. So what was he doing? Where was he, and did it get him killed? They talked about the case and headed out to lunch, but before they got there, Brett got a call. The missing body was back… but without organs! And according to Nax, it wasn’t done for black market organs because it was sloppy and part of a kidney was left behind so it was not usable. But Nax found evidence that the victim had swallowed hardcore drugs to smuggle. But it was a fractured skull that killed him, not the drugs. Where would the investigation take them now?
The reader is given a mystery and a romance to enjoy. Although the story is short, it still captures the reader’s attention and desire to find out how the victim got involved in all of this. Meanwhile, Genius continues to try to entice Brett and seems to be making some progress. I haven’t read the previous books, but that was the direction I saw the story line moving. This is such a whimsical story, serious and yet light-hearted. The author balances both well.
A really good read Firstly let me say I am new to this author James Cox but I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I’m really glad that I found him as an author. This book is part of a series called Big Balls and Brass Knuckles and this is booked four in the series but this is the first book that I’ve read and I Do you think that I’ve missed a lot about these two. So I wish I had found this series earlier and started the series at the beginning Detective Brett Knucks And his partner Genius are working a case of a man found tangled in an air filter. It looks like he’d been pushed so now these two had to work out the story behind the murder. But what also is apparent is that these two are having fun away from the station. I wouldn’t know how to call their relationship if it is even a relationship but they do enjoy each other’s company. I really enjoyed the story plot and the mystery and the danger that was involved with the investigation. But what really sang out for me was the attraction between Brett and genius. It was like there was this pulley system between them and they just needed to be together. I really wish I started this series at the beginning But it didn’t stop me from thoroughly enjoying this book.

This was a new to me author and I was pleasantly surprised by this short read. The tittle indeed covers the story, but in a totally different way then I expected. The dynamics between the two mc's was drama free and relaxed and sometimes spicy. I really enjoyed the writing style, well rounded and unfortunately the story was finished before I knew it. I totally did not notice when choosing the book, it was set in the future, however the cover might have indicated it a bit. It is not so sci-fi as some other books, it feels very similar to our world just 100+ years ahead. I am sure to check the earlier stories in the Big Balls and Brass Knuckles series.

Lotsa fun! Chris and Brett are enjoying working together professionally, and getting lots closer personally. After his interview, Chris gets a little sass from the detectives about his crime solving activities. On the scene of a new death, Chris is held at gunpoint. Brett, notifies Zia, Chris' daughter that he's okay. Zia, is a peach. The new homicide leads the men on a merry chase. Strong, great characters, adventurous mystery. A fun story. Do they solve the mystery? Do they out their relationship in the precinct? Well done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I am really enjoying this series. While they are short stories, you don't feel short changed when you finish them. I love that Brett is still making Genius work hard to progress their relationship further but is starting to show less reluctance. Their relationship combined with the cases they solve each story really keeps me coming back for more.
Let me just say that I fell hard for these two characters. Now in book four, you can't help but invest in their relationship almost as much as they do. Filled with mystery, romance, unpredictability, and many heated moments between Brett and Genius. Of course, it wouldn't be complete without at least one of them working hard for their connection.

I liked The Broken Man by James Cox. It's the fourth book in the Big Balls and Brass Knuckles series. I enjoyed Genius and Brett's continued story. They have become casual lovers, but both secretly wish for more. The new murder the two were investigating was interesting, as was the arrest of the suspected murderer. I would have liked the book to be a little longer.
