My Retribution: A Second Chance Series

Rate this book
They say people come into your life either for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. I had to agree.

I married a wonderful woman. She enriched my life. She showed me the meaning of love and how to love. She became my lifetime, my forever. However, the love of my life was taken from me too soon and we never had a chance to see what life had in store for us.

Losing her crushed my soul. I was lost. I turned cold, bitter, and if you asked my team, they would say I became moody as ever. My outlook on life, on love, had changed. I had zero interest in starting over. In finding love again. I didn’t date. I didn’t see the reason for women in my life but to fulfill my carnal needs.

So, imagine my surprise when the ice around my heart began to crack the moment a phenomenal woman stumbled into my life.

The problem was, I didn’t want to let her in. I didn’t want to take a chance on her. I didn’t think I had to energy or the desire, but day after day, this woman began to pump life back into me. She challenged me, caused desire and need to flow through my veins once again.

I believed in second chances, if deserving, but not when it came to matters of the heart. I had met and experienced life with my soulmate. And yet, how could that be if my heart and soul craved another deeper than I had ever experienced in my life?

Is there such a thing as having two soulmates? I didn’t think so. But maybe I was wrong.
Here is my story…

She's back, it's been a while since we've had a book from SKL. This story is a spin-off of characters (Lock & Phoebe) that first appeared in 'My Addiction' featuring Ayana and Brad, way back when.

Phoebe is running from her past but she's tired and determined to not flee when "he" finds her again. There is someone that gives her a reason to stay, someone that doesn't make her skin crawl and his name is Lock (brother of Brad). Lock works in law enforcement and he is called by his sister-in-law Ayana to be there for Phoebe after she encounters a strange man in her home. He feels the pull and connection, but doesn't want to give in to it because he believes he's had his first and only true love and she died. He doesn't want or need a relationship. Phoebe intrigues him and he, her. She has a thousand reasons to stay away from him but common sense ain't all that common!

Phoebe is greatly encouraged to forget about any potential involvement, and she tries, but the libido wants what the libido wants. No promises are made and Lock fights his growing attraction to Phoebe until he sees a potential competitor. Actually, he runs hot and cold and vacillates between wanting that connection with Phoebe and denying it exists altogether. When he learns her history, he's determined to be there for her but he also knows there's much more that she's withholding.

As it got near the end of the story it became clear there would be a second book. However, I became annoyed with Phoebe because there is NO earthly reason for her TSTL moment. The whole situation reeked of a set-up and it's about to hit the fan. Luckily, we'll find out how it ends when Retribution Too is released on July 29, 2022. Stay tuned.

Read It or Wait for Book 2. Be sure to check out her other books, they're good too.

What did I just read...

I don't know if Phoebe was 29 or 13. To me, she acted more like a child than an adult. Calling Lock, Chris, instead of Lock to pretend she wasn't talking about him. Like seriously, who does that at 29. I honestly preferred to hear about Brad and Ayana than Lock and Phoebe. Both have great chemistry but don't want to be together because....I don't even know. This book frustrated me even more when I realized there is a part 2. If we took out the 20 pages of describing Brad and Ayana's house we could have gotten some closure in book one. I don't think I will read book 2. Phoebe play too many games. Grow up.

OMG...Lock and Phoebe

These two were following around each other fighting the connection they felt for each other. For Phoebe, Lock was the first man she felt comfortable being around since escaping her abusive sociopathic ex. For Lock, Phoebe was the first woman he made a connection with for the first time since the death of his wife which did not include a one-night stand. He wanted more but he knew Phoebe was hiding some things in her life and the detective in him would not stop until he knew everything. He's in big trouble because he really wants her in his life.

Well S.K. warned us that this was a cliffhanger that I just hate. But at least the next book is scheduled to drop in a couple of weeks and not months or years.

This book has it all intrigue, mystery, action , romance and heat. Lock is a walking time bomb with many layers. However, the fuse to his bomb has walked into his life and its changed. Phoebe is a tortured woman with a past full of demons. The main demon is stalking her but her potential savior is the 1st man to actually touch her in years.
Read how the mystery unfolds and the relationship that wasn't supposed to happen does.
I loved the heat between these two and can't wait to see how it all plays out in part two..

Fabulous read..

The story was good but could have been better.
I found the Hh initial commentary was fine, but as the main characters began developing the constant commentary did not add to the story, if anything it took away from the story, maybe it was meant as a comic relief I’m not sure.
The last 15% of the story finally gets really good and is worth waiting for the final installment of this book (hopefully)

Is this book /series worth the read? For sure!

Phoebe’s secrets are off the chain

I liked Phoebe and “Lock”. Their story was broody, dramatic and sexy. I think she held into her secrets for too long. I know there’s more to her story. Bad stuff happened to her in the service. Byron was a predatory monster. I hope Lock gets to kick his ass in the next book. He doesn’t have to kill him just beat the hell out of him like he did to Phoebe. A taste of his own medicine as it were. I love Ayana and Noelle and hope their stories get told. I also like Ivey, Brad and Sol. This book was so good I couldn’t put it down. I read it in two days, and one of those days I was at work! Keep up the great story telling, S.K. Lessly. Looking forward to the next chapter in Phoebe and Lockhart’s story.

Oh My !!!!

Attracted at first sight… they didn’t have a chance. Imagine for years the thought of someone touching you give you the creep and into a panic attack! huh 🤔 Well, for the first time in years Phoebe finally is yearning for a man’s touch and that is Sergeant Mills who is emotionally unavailable , and Mr Hottie can’t control his attraction to the beautiful, sexy woman.
See for yourself what happened… !
Can’t wait for the next book! 🙌 🔥

Enjoyed!

I enjoyed the storyline and the main and secondary characters. I can't wait to see what happens next. I want to know what her ex has to do with all this and the information on Reed and Garrett, something and right with them two. Bryon has me wondering what his part in all this.

Getting Into It

*****Spoilers*****

I like how this one starts out with an introduction to Lock and Phoebe but the author takes a little time for them to be introduced separately before they really get together. We learn that Lock is a detective, a Sargeant in charge of a stellar team of men who have a record of solving cases. Then there's Phoebe, a former military medic running away from her past and a prior boyfriend who's not only a senator's son but was also sadistic and possessive. His previous abuse was covered up for the most part and Phoebe was honorably discharged from the military and so was the ex but to a mental institution. Phoebe and Lock meet when she literally runs into him while they're both at some place with his brother Brad and wife Ayana. It sets things up well for them when the ex-boyfriend finds Phoebe again, at least she thinks so since she identifies him from scent alone. Why? Because Phoebe doesn't see his face, he was masked up when he invaded her house but she fought and got away from him. Lock goes to her house after getting a frantic call from his sister in law Ayana to go help her friend Phoebe. Attraction is instant but nothing comes of it for a while though they get time here and there between mutual friends and the occasional random meet because they're in the same place.

We get at outset that Phoebe, along her two friends, Reed and Garrett, also former military, are doing something illegal so Lock is the last person she should be getting closer to. Eventually we learn the three of them rescue women and children from domestic violence situations. Not sure how that's illegal other than the fact that at times, they can get a little rough with the abusive partner. Reed seems to possibly have feelings for Phoebe beyond a friendship but I'm not quite sure if those feelings have died over the years and he truly only wants to be friends with her now. In any case, Phoebe and Lock connect and chat as they meet periodically during mutual friends' events. At one party, things heat up and they take their attraction to the bedroom.

What I didn't get is the fact that Phoebe moved or moves around a lot because of the threat of her former boyfriend. He somehow continues to find her, but also that she and her rescue operation are still going strong presumably despite the fact that she moves so often. At the beginning of the book, Phoebe is adverse to large crowds and touch, with Lock as an inexplicable exception, but that seems to fade to the background more than I wouldn't expected. Phoebe also isn't supposed to get close to these women she helps, and they're not supposed to know who they're being rescued by, but for some reason she gave out her information to one of them, a decision which comes back to bite her in the end of this book. One of the abused women goes back to get some jewelry or something from her former house and calls Phoebe on the way there. Phoebe jumps to race to the house and ends up being a witness to the woman's murder by the ex.

Phoebe is still hiding certain information from Lock which seems like it can't do anything but end badly though we'll see. I'd like to know where else this book goes.

Lock and Phoebe undeniable chemistry😘😍😘

Yesssss I missed reading Ms. Lessly’s books.  I love the way she writes and this books was no exception as the character and story pulls you in and it’s hard to stop put down once you get started😊❤️.

Lock, Lock, Lock, oooooh this man is everything😍.  I mean how can you resist a sexy, broody, dominate and passionate man.  Their accidental meeting is the best thing that happened to them.  It was instant attraction but they were cautious exploring it however Lock was quick to lock down Phoebe in his own way from being with any other man😛😜. Phoebe's past trauma connected to her ex Byron and her extra curricular activities Reed and Garret tried to keep her distance from Lock but it was useless😉.  Lock had issues himself when it came to matters of the heart, not looking for anything serious however something about Phoebe, her energy, her being was the perfect fit to the empty space in his heart🥰.  Their chemistry is amazing and I loved their inner dialogue, it was funny and so relatable.  Byron is the worst kind of human being taking advantage of woman and subjecting them to emotional and physical trauma😤😠.  He may be slick but he won’t be able to hide for long😑. The supporting characters are all great with the exception of Reed, his attitude is 💩 but I knew why🫤.  Loved seeing Ayana and Brad as well as Noelle and Ivey from My Addiction.

There is a lot packed in this first of two books and although some may not like cliff hangers I'm glad the story wasn’t shortened and crammed into one.  Part 2 came out as I was finishing this book and let me just say that conclusion in part 2 is great.  If you missed reading Ms. Lessly books I highly recommend this one🙌.

Wooooweeee chile this book is DEEP!!

Oh. My. Lawd. This book was off the rails amazing!! S. K. Lessly took me on a rollercoaster ride of epic proportions with this storyline. There's so much to unpack for my review. First be aware that this book has a cliffhanger. BUT!! Don't let that cause you not to read this book. Trust me you are gonna want to read this book. Yes, its that dang good.
The storyline was just brilliant. Lock, a widower and a cop, meets Phoebe and his world view changes. But Phoebe has demons that haunt her dreams that Lock isn't aware of. In this book Phoebe finds herself trying to navigate two lives. One by day and another by night that Lock isn't aware of. But he knows something's not right about Phoebe. No more spoilers! I will say this story had he on the edge of my wheelchair! There is so much drama, suspense, chemistry, steamy sexual tension and sex and more drama in this book. I love it! And the supporting characters, Noelle and Ayana are the best female ride or die girlfriends ever. And now that the villain Byron has shown his ugly evil face and stirred up the hornets nest things are about to get really really deep. If book 2 is anything like book 1, I'm not get any sleep tonight for sure. I totally totally recommend this book! S. K. Lessly did that!! 🥰🥰🥰

OMF***G!!!!

Firstly, I want to stay WELCOME BACK MS. LEESLY!! I was worried for a moment that she got out of the game, and left us hanging about PHOEBE & LOCK!!! Thankfully she is BACK and better than before. Ms Leesly did not disappoint with this book.

PHOEBE & LOCK are up there as one of my
Top 5 favorite couples of her books. I loved the chemistry of the pair that leapt off the pages from the beginning. LOCK has understandable issues in that he doesn’t want to pursue anything with anyone due to his loyalty to his late wife. However, there come a time when one must admit, the heart wants what the heart wants.

PHOEBE has finally met a man that “does it for her” She see LOCK as that man that has unlocked(no pun intended) feeling in her that has been dormant for many years. He made her feel like the woman she thought was long gone and lost. It is a beautiful thing.

I was a little surprised at the end but I should have known Classic S.K. Leesly would leave us wanting more. I can’t wait to read about these two again very soon.

Delightful

Oh My this is a enjoyable story to read with characters that are easy to enjoy! Phoebe is someone who just wants to love and be loved. The couple has a connection so strong that not even though they hardly know much about the other. But there is someone who wants to come between them and sever their bond. Their love story is that a fated love will never be denied and a man who loves his woman will not allow anyone or anything to get in the way of him having her because he desires her above all else. This is not just a typical romance, since it has elements of suspense and of course throughout the entire time there’s something that’s just simmering beneath the surface, and that along with the depth of passion that the main characters have. It's what makes this book such a page turner. I'm so excited for the next book and oh did I forget about the cliffhanger but I don't mind because it's still worth staying up nights to binge on this story that's fantastic!

I love S.K. Lessly

I love S.K. Lessly and I only gave this book 5 stars because of that, otherwise I would have given it 2 stars. I've been waiting for this book forever and as soon as I saw it I bought it. I always loved Lock's character. I'm not a huge fan of the heroine, but she could potentially grow on me in the next book. The reason I said I'd give this 2 stars is because she sounds like 2 different people. On one hand she fine with people but skittish and on the other hand she absolutely terrified of people. She's terrible but her side gig puts her danger of the situation that she's running from. That seemed off to me. The other reason I would give this a 2 star is because of the ending. I hate cliffhangers with a passion. IMO they're a let down to the reader. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Love 💕 It

Wow this was insane, I applaud Phoebe through her abuse she decided to help others. I wish I had someone like her to talk to. The first 5 years of my marriage was ok, not good or even great. I guess I refuse to see when he started changing. I should have left his behind when he started yelling, he didn’t know why he married my sorry ass. I heard that for 31 years. I finally decided to divorce him, I talked my daughters into staying with me after they turned 18 because I was to scared to stay in the house by myself with him. When been divorce for 7 years he lives with my youngest daughter in another state and ask people to ask me will I take him back (NO not happening).
I would also like a man like Lock, I would really enjoy a man to show unconditional love, and make me feel safe, plus sex me up real good.

unexpected chance

A widower who has shut down his heart to love and a woman who is badly in need of the safety and security this mama love would bring.
Lock and Phoebe have a need that no one but the other can fill. She has been traumatized by a counterfeit love and is doing what she can to help others who suffered abuse at the hands of one who proclaimed to love them.
Will these two take the chance at love or will their walls, secrets and trauma stop them?
The book is getting good! The chemistry between Lock and Phoebe is palpable. He says he can’t have her but he blocks anyone else from getting at her. She has secrets that she can’t reveal, because too much is at stake. Those secrets are about to come to a head now tho and it’s going to be a big blow up!
Good read!

Dragged On

I am of fan of SK Lesley but, this booked seemed to drag on and on with no significant storyline. It was just a book of fillers. I kept waiting for a significant passage or storyline but, it never came. This book was poorly written and I have read all, if not most of Ms. Lessly's books.I could not believe this was wriiten by the poignant author who wrote the Obsession or controlled series. Then, I finally get to get to the end only to find that it's a cliffhanger. Why? No significant storyline was established in this book. Such a disappointing read. Not worthy of a cliffhanger let alone the quality of a SK Lesley book.

“This can only be a one time thing”

This book was amazing, from the moment I started reading it. Their chemistry together was scorching. He found it, both thinking they were damaged but as we know with love… It’s so crazy because I’m just now reading this book and book 2 just came out on my birthday. So now I’m off to find it. I even love the second and third leads, I hope there is a story out there for them or maybe in the works. I hate cliffhangers especially if I don’t know it’s coming but anyway “ I’m off to go see the wizard ”. Chemistry, intrigue, smutness (lol) family and friendship

My Retribution Part 1 is 🔥🔥🔥🙌

SK Lessly 👸of angsty, romantic suspense reigns supreme in My Retribution🙌You can feel the longing , angst, passion in this slow burn suspense romance, until the crescendo builds & erupts with 🔥🔥🔥& 🌶️🌶🌶🌶 It was a bonus to see how Brad & Ayana are navigating married life🤗.The story is sad as you learn about the abuse poor Phoebe endured in the military at the hands of a pseudo, pretend Dom; but also beautiful as she begins to find love with an absolute dream of a man in Lockhart (Lock) Mills. The dangerous secrets😳 she is keeping from Lock, plus her abuser being still free to torment her will make for an entertaining 📚2 Happy Reading🍷

Too much commentary

This book had so many unnecessary words. Thinking, explaining, lost in thought, repeating things all could have been cut down too finish the book. In some spots, I skipped because it said nothing. This very long book could have ended. I am trying to sike myself up enough to read the next one. I am a little bit put off about Lock and Phoebe. The chemistry sucked. When she was telling her story, it took so long. I skipped forward. Even the cliffhanger was dumb. In essence, this book made me tired.

Lock, a true Alpha male, and Phobe were explosive.
I did not read Brad and Ana’s story, but will now. Phobe had the right amount of spark to play Lock’s love interest.
Their interaction from the very beginning was the catalyst that will have me following this author.
Lock and Phobe loved and argued, made up and fought for one another. A man like the character of Lock portrayed here has you wanting one just like him. Just wished that Phobe explained her true relationship with Reed to Lock much earlier

Great Read!

I always enjoy reading books by this Author! I loved the chemistry between Phoebe and Lock! I know there is more to come between these two, but I just can't wait to see what happens next! This is an action/love story that is finally ready to be told. Phoebe with her ex psycho boyfriend and Lock with his deceased wife, I'm glad these two met by circumstances! I definitely recommend this book/series to all!

Lock and Phoebe

I am Loving Lock. He is such an alpha male. He is giving me Dom vibes but not like the Dom Byron claimed to be. Although Phoebe's heart is in the right place she should have let Ansley do what ever she wanted because now she got a lot of attention she doesn't need. Although I know Lock won't let nothing happen to her. Reed got me looking at him sideways sometimes. It might just be me. I hope Brad do something about Jennifer cause she getting on my nerves. Great Read.💓💓

3.5⭐️

The book started off slowly and then developed, but then throughout the middle towards the end I felt that it was drawn out. I had to skim towards the end and as a result didn’t feel a connection towards the characters. Hopefully, after reading the second book in the series I can create more of a distinction of whether I like the book or not. Overall I like the gist of the series.

I am glad this author has started writing again because the previous works were definitely page turners. I’m not sure if it was me but it had a very slow start. I have a hard time connecting with Phoebe. It’s almost a borderline dislike. She’s unnecessarily deceptive and frustrating. It starts to heat up toward the end as it leads to a “to be continued”. I am looking forward to the 2nd installment and hopefully I can better connect with the lead heroine.

And the Plot Thickens

Enter the world of S.K. Lessly. This is the first book of a two-part series that ends on a cliffhanger but fortunately for me the 2nd book is available. With an interesting cast of characters and a gritty suspenseful plot this is a good series introduction into the world of Phoebe and Lock. The pacing is slow but I quickly became invested in the storyline. Now onto the conclusion.
