Hi, I’m Mina Karim and I’m... Well, I’m not too sure what I am. Not anymore anyway. But what I am sure of, is never, under any circumstances, offer your soul to a demon while drunk.
When performing a summoning ritual, there are just a few rules to follow. 1. Never offer your soul. 2. Be sure to read the written text EXACTLY as shown. 3. Know Latin. 4. Protection, protection, PROTECTION. And lastly, the most important rule of all 5. Never, under any circumstances, summon a demon while drunk.
After breaking every rule in the book, Mina and her friends accidentally summon an ambivalent demon, creating a domino effect of terrors that only an ancient Demon Priestess can fix.
The problem? One priestess is missing and the other is imprisoned.
Now, Mina finds herself working with the very demon who took her soul, to find a way to break their tether.
Will they be able to break the bond?
Or will the truth send them spiraling further into the endless depths of Hell?
"Sunflower in the Shadows" is a Dark romance that contains gore, scenes that may seem frightening or grotesque to some readers, and graphic sex scenes. It is intended for mature audiences only.
For fans of the Vampire Diaries who think Damon and Bonnie should have ended up together
The marketing and synopsis of this book immediately drew me in and I was very grateful enough to receive an arc copy to give an honest review. A drunken witch accidentally summoning a demon was not on my bookish bingo card but I am all for it!
*Spoilers Ahead*
Writing/Plot
A mysterious book lands into the hands of our main character Mina who then decides it’s a good idea to drunkenly chant the strange Latin language around a campfire with her friends. This in turn summons a demon who will grant each of them their deepest desire, for the price of their souls.
We are introduced to Eriusazul, a demon from a realm called the 6 Circles who is unable to go back due to the mishap with the ritual ( among other things). He and Mina are accidentally tethered to each other and are unable to go their separate ways.
Mina not only is able to speak to the dead, but she can also turn into a demonic hybrid with an additional set of powers that keep growing. What I wanted from all of this was a set explanation of the power/magic system so I could understand things a bit better.
I also felt that there was a lot of descriptive writing to set the scene and not enough dialogue for my taste. We follow Mina through her daily routine of getting ready, going to work, doing things at work, getting food (food trips are necessary but this was VERY repetitive), and settling in for the night. All in vivid detail. I felt that the book began to drag a bit. Due to this, the plot is lost in the endless chapters of Mina and Erius moving through the week in a repetitive cycle.
As someone who enjoys conversation and a bit of banter, I felt that it was lacking. In Mina and Erius’ relationship, I understood that the demon comes off as guarded and silent due to his distrust of humans. However, Mina was not as engaging either so a lot of their conversations consisted of short one-liners, dancing around topics, and Erius’ smug smile after ignoring or teasing Mina. This doesn’t change until later in the book when the plot comes to life and the two are getting to the bottom of their situation.
Characters
I found myself liking the few chapters that featured Erius’ point of view. His perspective explained a lot more of what was going on in the story and his emotions (or at least the few that he has) shine through. Though as guarded as he is, his lack of communication forces Mina to constantly ask questions that are most of the time unanswered. This evasiveness is a theme in the majority of their conversations. Mina does not have emotions due to the tether so her thoughts and perspective of things come off as flat. I am not sure if this was done purposely by the author but the character in my opinion came off as flat as well due to this. Especially with the lack of internal thoughts and monologue.
Their relationship was rocky in the beginning but with the power of lust, the two came together and the romance began to pop off.
So in other words, the smut was very much so smutting…..does this count as monster corn (you guys know what I’m trying to say)?
I will say, that Erius falls into the possessive “she’s mine” category which is kind of my favorite "toxic book boyfriend trait". He begins to open up to her and shows a softer side, but with little to no inner thoughts being written, I wasn’t entirely sure how Mina felt about the state of their relationship. It seemed as though her friend Amber had more to say about it all.
As for her group of friends (who have also been roped into the situation), I did not see much of them aside from their short chapters showcasing the development of their powers.
Overall thoughts
I gave this book 3 stars as it is my way of saying the book lands in a neutral area of good but still has some qualities that I did not like as much. Despite the few things I found were cons in reading this, I believe that the story has a good start and could become something greater. I am very interested in where things will go now that the characters banded together to dive into the world of demons and other monsters. I expect to see a lot more action, a new look into Mina and Erius’ relationship, and more information on the world and its power system. A lot of things were introduced that I felt needed to be fully explained.
I can’t wait to read the next one.

I think this would have been more enjoyable if roughly 40-50% of the day to day, day in the life stuff was cut out. A fantasy or paranormal stuff that spend too much time in the mundane is always going to way less enjoyable in my opinion. But I pushed through because I wanted answers and while I have some idea of very basic things I don’t think there is nearly enough here to keep most readers invested. For me I had just gone too far to abandon it. If the pace in book two doesn’t go much faster and if the answers don’t start coming I’m gonna be very disappointed. And while I can appreciate the fmc not knowing anything or being kept in the dark, both of them not knowing anything, thus keeping the reader completely in the dark made this a difficult read. It’s dual pov but just barely. The lore was at least interesting but everything else left a lot to be desired.
I got a free version but my opinion is genuine (some e-mail list for free books via book funnel).
First I think the version I have must have been some kind arc -version, because there was some odd mistakes. Like punctuation symbol between chapters were in wrong place (like in middle of sentence), there was couple times lighter gray text in middle of black one and some grammar mistakes (like sentences first letter was small or something like that). I am considering should I actually get a paid version from Amazon and check if there is differences?
Now for the story itself: I enjoyed it quite much. But there was also things I didn't like and they are reasons this is just 3 star book.
1. I didn't like the start. There was no introduction to the world and it's magic system. Ok it was mentioned to be like ours, but was it 100% same? What about witches, are they all self tought or is there covens? Is real magic common or rare? Big audience, do they know anything about supernatural world?
2. I also think it was odd that side characters got one chapter for themself, but no more. If you want to them tell their view, there should be more. If it was just a way to tell what kind of powers they have, you can do it easilly other ways. Now was just couple loose chapters. I also would hoped that Eris have had more chapters from his view.
3. There was couple time a stupid plottwist. FMC made something really stupid and it felt like author just needed excuse how to move plot forward, but scenes should have been eveloped more reasons.
4. Plot was some times a bit boring and there was description of things that really didn't matter. Like in the start one sidecharacters ex and her two days "heartbroke". Nothing interesting or meaninful for the plot.
I wasn't at first sure do I like characters, I didn't feel connection. But I started to like them during the story and I think it was cool that FMC was not virgin helpless damsel. A little bit more actual conversations would have been nice.
Summarum: there was a lot in book what bothered me and thats why I didn't give 4 stars. How ever, on the end I was disappointed when book was finished. I was hoping to read more and felt I had to let go too soon (for now). If there had already been book 2 released, I would buy it right away. Story was entertaining enough and it can be eveloping something great. It has potential. I started to enjoy story, world and characters was getting more intriguing and I enjoyed when FMC's and MC's relationship eveloped from enemies to lovers.
There was gore and smutty sex in story, so this is no book for everyone, but I liked. Demon can be quite fierce. Characters moral is also at least grey, so no classical heroes.
Book review 📚 Sunflower In The Shadows by Ambrosia R. Harris ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
🌻 Enemies-to-lovers 🌻 One bed 🌻 Age gap 🌻 Forced proximity
Shadows in the Shadows captivated me from the very first page and kept me in a grip up until the last page.
The FMC, Mina, is flawless. I thoroughly enjoyed her journey through the story. The MMC Erius is captivating and the chemistry and tension between the two is fantastic. I loved the slow burn aspect.
Harris has an unbelievably rare talent for turning simple moments into powerful reflections. Descriptions that are vivid and making it so easy to create this world in your mind. It's breathtaking. Harris makes every single scene come to life with her prose, it's nothing short of extraordinary. The emotional depth from Harris is phenomenal, she does not shy away from the darker aspects of life and she shows how strength can emerge from the most challenging circumstances.
Sunflowers in the Shadows has lingered with me, long after I've finished it. This book is a triumph.
4.5 stars. God, it’s so painful to get really settled in with such a long book only to reach the end and find out it’s not a standalone and your questions aren’t answered… The book started a little weak, with a lot of expository/setup scenes of the FMC going about her daily life that I thought could’ve been condensed drastically. Honestly the book could’ve started with her making this ill-fated deal with the demon straightaway and filled in the story later with details of her daily life and I would’ve been happy with it. I like it when the MCs meet in chapter one :)
Funny thing is, I actually ended up getting the impression that the FMC is one of those rock-solid, routine-focused chicks that would never impulsively make a soul trade with a demon, so actually having all of those scenes of her doing yoga, meeting clients, and binning the creepy haunted book made it even more jarring when she did the ritual and took the deal.
The rest of the book is a slow-burn, forced proximity romance between the demon and the human FMC while she begins to unlock her mysterious new gifts, including some very unexpected ones that the MMC very much did not intend to impart. I liked the slow unfurling of their relationship, liked that it took them a long time to open up to one another and they don’t just spill their guts at the first hurdle. Maybe that was why the expository chapters were so long—to prepare us for the rest of the book to take its time with the plot?
I do wonder, though, if we needed full accounting of EVERY shower and DoorDash order and the constant updates on whether FMC had gone to bed before or after putting her hair up… look, I’m a girl too, and I do put my hair up at night too—when you skip your routine, obviously it speaks to state of mind—it was just, well, a lot.
Still, I am keeping an eye out for the rest of the series cause I do wanna know how it ends! If the author sticks the landing this might be a really good one.
This book had the backbone of a great story - the potential for great world-building, two fated lovers, a deep mystery, and magic galore. Unfortunately, the writing didn't quite execute enough for me. I wonder if I had a pre-release/draft version because there were so many grammatical and spelling errors. The tenses kept changing, sometimes within the same sentence. The writing jumped randomly from present tense to past and back to present, taking me out of the story. The wrong "unfazed" would be used (yeah..."unphased").
Some parts of the story were extremely repetitive (does Mina eat anything besides burgers?). Some structural choices also made little sense - we got one-off POV chapters from some of Mina's friends, and I'm not sure why. I kept mixing them up with each other or forgetting altogether who exactly the person was. Her friends disappear and reappear throughout the book, and they don't seem to play a critical role whatsoever. Perhaps future books will feature each friend as the main character? We only got hints of their individual powers here. I also don't like slow burns but that's just a personal preference.
Imagine going camping with your best friends to help one of them forget her ex-boyfriend, only to get drunk and end up performing a ritual where you offered your souls in exchange for powers, and now you're tethered to a demon?
Yup. That's what happened to Mina here 🤣
I really can't wait to see what happens in the next book because there are so many things that happen and make everything all the more interesting! And I need to see more of Mina's friends and how their powers work too 😱🖤
🖤 Forced Proximity 🩷 Enemies to Lovers 🖤 One Bed 🩷 Age Gap 🖤 Multi POV 🩷 Ritual Gone Wrong
A mystical book and a drunken summoning of a demon that ultimately would change a group of friend’s lives forever! It was a bit of a slower paced read for me but still overall a good book. A bookshop, humans, magic, demons and smut all rolled into one. The story gradually builds over time and so does the possessive relationship between Erius and the main character Mina. The pace, action and sexual tension gradually build in the story as Mina, Erius and her friends set out to find a way to break the tether between Mina and Erius. I really am looking forward to the next book though because I need to see what happens next!
Overall, I LOVED the dynamic between Mina and Erius. They played off each other so well and made for some interesting dialogue. The world building was cool and I thought it was funny that the Four Seasons hotel was the home base for a lot of demons. Checks out. Though, this is a slow burn. I thought it took a while to get going. The first 10% of the book felt like the pacing dragged. Like Mina wakes up, goes to work, drinks with friends, rinse and repeat. But once it started moving, it was a lot of fun! From the moment Erius gets introduced, it pushes the plot into action. This book was fun and if you are a sucker for witch and demon romances, this book is for you!
I was genuinely enthralled during this whole story. The character development between the 2 main characters was great. The back story of our main character Mina is great through the whole story. I also like that we get a view of "hell" from a different perspective. I can't wait for the next installment to see where this story is going. I would suggest you check trigger warnings before the read. There's nothing too graphic but it does have a level of spice!!
I really wanted to like this book because I was intrigued by the synopsis and I like reading books that have black girls with powers, but this was really boring and repetitive. I was about three hundred pages into it and I almost screamed when I realized that I was about to read another chapter about the MC doing a reading or ordering takeout. Truthfully, the only reason that I didn't dnf was because of the slow burn between the MC and the LI.

I was part of Ambrosias' ARC readers for this story and I definitely recommend reading it. It's the right amount of smut with magic and demons involved. I read it in two days, I couldn't put it down. Once again I'm a fan of her writing style and the way she makes her books flow. Definitely recommend a 5/5 for me
My god this book was long. lol. The pacing was slow and there were a lot of self discovery happening and that affected the pacing. But I kinda enjoyed it. It was refreshing not running through every scene.
Mina is a witch that gets drunk with her friends at a camping trip and accidently summons a demon and bargains not only her soul but also her friends souls! In sunflower in the shadows we follow Mina’s journey into figuring out how break the tether and coming into her own powers. There is black cats, strange visions, weird spell books, spiritual readings, tarot cards,an apothecary shop, supportive friends and a extremely good looking grumpy demon.
The story did start slow for me and as for the the world building I wish it was explained more. The demon world and the magic system is very interesting so hopefully it’s expanded more in the next book. I also felt like there were some repetitive scenes of everyday routine for the characters.
I enjoyed the multi pov( it was mostly Mina and Erius Pov’s )and hopefully we will get more in the next book. I really loved Erius POV through his pov we got more of the demon world the magic system and world building which I love because he was explaining it to our FMC who didn’t know much about it. I wish we got more inner dialogue from him and I also wish there was more banter between Mina and Erius.
Back in august, I was given the opportunity to be an alpha read for this gripping now after reading the finished piece I am pleased to say it is still amazing the second time round. I love the world building it actually made me hungry) the character development and the tension in every moment. Also Prometheus and fidget are just too precious for words and must be protected at all cost.
