They thought they could exile me and I'd go quietly? Not likely. It's been five years and I've only gotten stronger, and more pissed off. Now the Sanctum wants me back, and I'm half tempted to tell them to suck it.

But I've got a score to settle, and fights to pick with the community that turned its back on me when I needed them most. In other words, I came here to kick a$$ and suck blood...and I'm all outta blood.

This is a RH standalone vampire/shifter/slayer romance with dark humor, possibly triggering violence, explicit romantic...entanglements, and a whole lot of wtf.

I hope this turns into a series, but desperately needs an editor

Needs editing, so, so, so badly. I have some seriously mixed feelings about this book. Overall, I did really like it, and I really hope it turns into a series, but only if Blue grows a brain, and if the writer could invest in a desperately needed editor.

I’m really frustrated by the lack of editing in this book. I can make exceptions for first time authors, but this is hardly Penn Cassidy’s first book. Not by a long shot. If you’re this far into your writing journey and you’re still making editing mistake, after editing mistake, it just feels like you don’t care about your readers. No one is perfect, and I can excuse a few mistakes here and there, but it doesn’t appear that the author even ran a basic spellcheck for this book. It’s that bad.

The incorrect words, spelling errors, constant spaces typed into the middle of words—and imo, one of the worst writing sins in existence—inconsistent descriptions of your own main characters. Like, do you even know who your characters are? Because you’re telling us their hair is this color, then later it’s that, then later again it changes erroneously. We don’t know what color eyes Dresden has. Blue? Brown? Brown as dark as black? Brown with gold and green flecks? I kid you not, we read all four of those descriptions for Dresden’s eyes. Then there’s Jasper with a closely buzzed head, yet in a $ e x scene, Blue is grabbing and pulling on his hair. Then later, it’s described as buzzed again. No. Just no.

Here are just a small handful of examples. There are mistakes on nearly every other page.
-Jaster (Jasper)
-“instead of a turd and goals” (turf)
-“I slept for twenty years of my life” (It’s 15 years. You don’t know your main character’s age?!)
-I’ d (I’d)
-“I’m going to tase you for days” (taste)
-“Harlow would text me before she headed back to let me know how Harlow was doing.”
-“smelly gum uniforms” (gym)
-“weapons bone more time” (one)
-“he would the hair around his hand” (wound)
-deluded (diluted)
-“why else would the angles force me” (angels)

Okay, last pet peeve for me, though it’s not as frustrating as bad editing. I’m in the camp that if an author picks a real place for their story to take place, then basic research on your designated area is in order. You don’t need to become a city planner or historian, just basic research. A large portion of this book revolves around Portland’s (Oregon) underground subway system, but Portland doesn’t have a subway system. We have city trains, but they’re above ground. The author clearly did some research, because they mention a few other Portland landmarks, but the whole intricate, underground subway system threw me for a loop.

Besides my frustration with the rushed editing, I really enjoyed this story, and I sincerely hope it becomes a series (which it seems like it could?). I definitely need more of Blue and her guys. And wouldn’t it be interesting if maybe she gets a fourth guy? Maybe a second wolf shifter and mate? (Oooh drama, I love it, lol 💅). Overall, I’d recommend this book. The steam and $e x were there (hot 🥵), the plot was interesting (if a bit slow), and I enjoyed all the main characters. I would definitely read more of this series if it comes out.

Plot ⭐️⭐️.5
Spice 🌶️🌶️
1st person POV - mostly our FMC Blue but a few chapters from the men as well

This book had a lot of potential but just fell short for me. While I appreciate that it was a standalone, it felt way too rushed and there was so much that could've been expanded upon. This author seems to have a habit of starting multiple series/duets and taking way too long to publish sequels and instead continuing to start many projects all at once. So, like I said, I appreciate that it's a standalone, but I'm disappointed that it was less flushed out when I know this author can put out pretty decent work, even if release dates seem to be an issue (for me at least).

Plot issues:
The plot was okay but things were wrapped up conveniently and then everyone moved on to the next issue. We have all this buildup about the Revenants (zombies) and how they are starting to intellectualize and strategize with their more coordinated attacks when previously they've been believed to be mindless and follow a herd like mentality. This belief is furthered with the high school attack in Portland where Blue goes to rescue her sister and they find a massive herd signifying their ranks and strategies are changing. There's the fact that there hasn't been a Revenant attack on campus in years but there's 2 in the first week that Blue is back on campus, including the turning of a classmate that's never explained. I thought for sure we were going to find out someone on campus was a mole and helping to coordinate these attacks and letting them in (spoiler alert: we don't and her turning/death is never talked about again...)

Blue also mentions that the night her parents were turned and killed a bunch of slayers, Blue saw something not totally "dead" in her mother's eyes almost like there was a part of her mother fighting for control before she fully succumbed and Blue was forced to end her. So many half-baked developments that if explored could have really elevated this story. As it stands, Blue is summoned back to the Sanctuary after being in exile for 5 years to further her training, she kills some zombies, falls in love with a few guys, and they form a group of elite slayers and they ride off into the gory sunset together.

Also, how could I not mention that the literal LOVE OF HER LIFE died 6!!! months ago and she's moving on. Asher left with her and her sister when they were exiled and loved her for the entire time until he was killed ~6 months before the start of this book. He continued to train with her and fight off the herds wherever they were living. Blue is still in agony over his death when the book starts (which makes sense because it's only been six fucking months) and yet she is able to fall for these new men? I don't know, maybe this is a personal issue and love knows no bounds or some shit. Blue sees his ghost a few times and is able to interact with him somewhat and in the end he fades away knowing she is safe and loved but he was literally the BEST boyfriend out of all of them. Literally none of the other 3 men compared to him so in a PNR romance, I'm left thinking, why couldn't the author have made his ghost a permanent fixture and given him some corporeal abilities? It felt like a shitty plot device to dump even more trauma on our FMC. Disappointing.

Rose Hathaway, is that you?
Now you didn't hear this from me but this felt eerily similar to Vampire Academy. A hunter goes off campus for a few years, is dragged back unwillingly, made to train with hot older guys, is an outcast from other students, FMC can see ghosts... sounding familiar? Similarly in TVA, the mindless enemy turns out to have a higher intelligence than previously known but while that's hinted at in this book, it's never taken any further like it did in TVA. TVA was also like 6 books or something so the detail and plot was much more advanced than this. And this book was obviously way heavier on the steam since TVA is firmly in the YA genre, but still. The similarities are there.

The Relationships
The steam was alright but there's really only 1 "group" scene and even then it's lackluster. A little kinky though because she drinks blood and literally bit the guys dick (with his permission) while giving him head. My jaw dropped with that. Blue also annoyingly begrudgingly forgives her best friend of 15 years in the epilogue when JJ gave her a shit apology even after said ex-best friend acted like a self righteous bitch for the entire book and after ghosting her for 5 years. One of the boyfriends (Cole) refused to believe Blue when she told him what his long term friend Vanessa did to her (attacked her in the woods) in favor of believing his lifelong friend and not his fated mate. The relationships also didn't feel as developed as they could've been. There's a lot of back and forth and denial of feelings and then WHAM, they're in love. She barely kisses Dresden in the book and then in like the last chapter they finally have sex because she was in a dress for the first time and he couldn't hold back any longer because she was so beautiful and he was, gasp, in love with her! 🙄

Anyways, the vibes were here in this book so if you're looking for an angsty, drama filled PNR, this may be for you. You don't want to think too hard otherwise it doesn't make much sense... God I really didn't mean for this to be this long but, fuck, the more I thought about it, the more I felt like a raccoon trying to wash his cotton candy in the river.

I really wish I enjoyed this book more than I did. The heroine and her sister are ostracized by their community and thrown out on their own the two teens are left floundering in the human world. Years later she’s summoned back to attend the academy where she’s hoping to train and perhaps slowly become part of the fold again. So much attention is paid to this horrible grievance and betrayal committed by their parents and yet the girls literally had nothing to do with it and are still being blamed for it. The amount of questions and assumptions I had about their betrayal were many. When we finally learn the full story at around 85% I felt so let down and almost blindsided cause it was pretty trivial considering. The relationship situation was also a bit weird from the start with each guy just sort of randomly joining. Guess the dynamics were just a bit weird and I’m kinda bummed so much of this world is built up and yet everyone in it sucks. Not sure why the women even want to go back but I guess by the end for them it had some perks.

Ashes to Ashes is another 5-star read from Penn Cassidy. I swear Penn knows how to write a story with action and smut. Every time I fall in love with the characters and I can never get enough. This book was amazing and once again, I don’t want to say goodbye.

I already knew Blue was going to be a savage but I just didn’t know how much of a savage I was going to get. Her character was so strong and so fierce. Let’s be real, she can take everyone in that story and come out like a boss. With everything that she’s been through, she has taken all that hurt and pain and become this beautiful powerhouse. She is quite literally one of my favorite characters ever.

There’s just something about men who are either hot and goofy, broody and dark, or possessive and alpha-like. Jasper had me cracking up but also had me blushing. That cemetery scene… we aren’t even going there. You already know I love Cole. The immediate need and want. The kitchen scene… ruined me. Last but not least, Dresden, he’s the one you would love to hate. Yet, you just can’t. That last scene… umm help me.

I absolutely loved and devoured this book. I felt so invested that I had so many emotions throughout this book. Asher broke me just as much as he broke Blue. I wanted to hurt V just as much as Blue. I truly just could not get enough and Penn why does it have to be over? I highly recommend this book because it’s amazing.

Loved it!

I loved it!!! I fell in love with her! She's been hurt and didn't take it laying down. There's something to say for strong willed females and she definitely is one. The men like all Penn writes are fire!!! And I want them all. If you have ever read her books there's twist and turns throughout. Definitely moments of what the hell. My top 3 of her books!!!

This one had A LOT going on but I quite enjoyed it! Very quick pace and I imagine it could've been a lot of fun as a series instead...there's not many paranormal creatures that go unseen in this book. I love a badass MC though!

Blue is my Spirit Animal

Oh man, Blue…

Ashes to Ashes is such a great gosh dang book from one of my favorite authors. She managed (quite spectacularly might I add) to nail reverse harem in one book. To top that off, it didn’t feel stilted or have that strange “instalove” trope like a lot of standalones are when it comes to RH.

I just am completely by how amazing this book was.

Blue is such a bad@$$ throughout the whole book and it gives me LIFE! Absolutely loved seeing her story play out, watching her slay revenant @$$ and manage to squeeze in a couple dozen “little deaths” between all the gore.

Snag this book, you won’t regret it.

Every character Penn creates, is soo extraordinary that you wish were Real or You'd love to be a part of their world!!! IDK if this will stay a Standalone, or become a series, but what I do know... So good

This might be one of my favorite book of Penn’s, so far. Top three at least. I love a sort of apocalyptic world with the paranormal entwined plus the author added her own spin on it. I would absolutely love to read more from this world with other characters or the history of it.

I loved the FMC, from her complicated past that made her who she is today to the events that transpired in the book, you can’t help but root for her every step of the way. Did I tear up at one point when she was talking about past? Definitely. Somehow the author made me feel for this character fairly quickly. I also liked the guys, each brought something to the table. I did enjoy learning about their pasts and seeing how the relationship developed but I really do think the FMC was the star.

The world building was so captivating and engrossing. It’s like the author put together some of the best parts of different paranormal storylines and molded them into one. There’s some academy, there’s maybe zombies, angels, vampires, werewolves, multiple love interests, betrayal, and angst, and it was just so good.

I hope that Penn writes more within this universe because I think there’s so much that can be explored. I’ll be looking forward to her next release whether it’s part of this world or not.

I just want to start out by saying Blue is a strong bish. The love she has for her sister shines brightly. I think Jasper was my favorite had Colt not pulled that stunt he would have been. I’m a little saddened this won’t be at least a duet because I would love to see more of these characters. There was plenty of spice and I’m almost positive I found a new kink that I wasn’t even aware of after reading one particular scene 🥰🥰🥵🥵🥵.

This book was straight fire, the FMC has had some troubles and been hurt but Lordy does it make her so much stronger. I am also a huge lover of vampire smut! And Penn really delivers on that front. I do think this book could have been made into a duet to extend the amazing world she created and it left me wanting to know more. Would highly recommend for a weekend read!

Ashes to ashes
Blue Graves is such an amazing fmc. She struggles with poverty and with those who would love to see her fall. The strength and fight for her family have you rooting for her.

This book kept me guessing!
From her rival/ childhood best friend. To the mysterious guy who wants her gone. To the wolf who stalks her through the graveyard. Blue fights with sass and attitude.

I love that you get to see multiple point of views by the end of the book. Ashes to ashes is such a great start to such a different take on the PNR world!

Ashes to Ashes is a standalone by Penn Cassidy and once again this woman has written a book I have fallen in love with. From the strong kick🍑 FMC Blue who I absofreaking loved to the guys who make you melt they’re so hawt. I love that for a standalone so much depth and world building has been put in to create such a beautiful picture especially with something as different as the slayer POV more than the vamps. Not sure if we’ll see more of this world or not but it’s got so much potential to do many standalones based in this world and I’m here for it!

This is another perfect spooky read! If you haven't read anything from Penn Cassidy, you are truly missing out. The stories she weaves are always intriguing and those spicy scenes *fans self*. Ashes to Ashes was a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat read. You have zombie vampires, revenge, truth unfolding throughout the story, and medium spice. If you're looking for a spooky read I highly suggest this one.

Rushed - like she was running late

This book has many grammatical errors, inconsistencies, and an overall discombobulated feeling to it. It reads like it’s missing huge chunks. Not my favorite of Penn’s.

AMAZING!!

Such a great read! Definitely gave me Blade/Vampire Academy vibes.
I think the heroine was a well rounded character that was self-aware. Which was a nice change to the angsty stereotype that is usually reserved for this trope.

There were a couple loose ends that I would have liked answers to but it wasn’t overly important.

However, I wish this book and these characters were made into a series as it feels like the story still has a lot to tell. I’m definitely going to be thinking about these characters for a while.
I would love to have been able to follow them into their adventures travelling as a team and finding a solution to the revenant problem.

3.5

This story was well written but it was all too fast. The world building is unique and deserves a series imo. But it had too much happening to mh without the time it needed. I don't feel like I know the men though their characters were well written. The huge obstacles faced by Blue in her community was a huge obstacle but did not get the depth or longevity I felt it deserved. So basically just too much happening without enough time dedicated to it. I will read more of this authors works as it was well written. It just needed and deserved more time.

My heart just aches for everything the main character and her sister. Going through all that..fighting for yourself and still loosing more on the way..just heartbreaking. Loved the action packed book, just the right amount of spice too.

It's a decently written book, but I think the author fell by the wayside in developing it. Blue didn't advance at any point as a character throughout the book, there was no development, she was stuck in the past for most of the story, only at the end was it like "yeah, well, we got our fortune and respect back, now we have to let go of the past" nothing more. She forgives everyone super simple after they betrayed her in a horrible way and only because they apologized at the end. She lives bitter and complaining that no one loves her or that she's to blame for all the important people in her life dying in almost the entire book, in the end it's not like she made much progress either and realized that complaining wasn't going to get her anywhere.

The romance also fell by the wayside. It happened too fast their supposed "love", it was something like this: "girl meets guys, sleeps with them 1 or 2 or 3 times and already in love" there was no relationship development; a reason why the guys would fall in love with her or she with them; them being handsome, sexy/beautiful or having sex all the time doesn't make a believable relationship. It felt like an empty romance as well as rushed and was reinforced by the fact that none of the love interests have good character development or an attitude that makes you think they actually love her. Worst of all, one of her partners doesn't believe her when she tells him that her best friend attacked her and says "baby, I think you're confused" go figure, Vanessa throws her against a tree and literally threatens to kill her to her face and he has the nerve to tell Blue, "you're confused" which leads to Vanessa then making good on her promise and trying to kill her. If he had believed her from the beginning and put a stop to her "friend", literally that could have been avoided, but still Blue FORGIVES HIM.

The plot also fell by the wayside. We are never told how it was that the reborns came to invade so much, or how that happened or if there was something that made everyone turn into some sort of zombie and led to the angels and sanctuaries or assassins showing up. It's like it's been around forever without a logical explanation. Also throughout the book the suspicion is thrown around that the reborn are orchestrating very organized plans as if they have intelligence beyond what they are supposed to have, that their attacks are becoming more complicated, random and continuous; which is not normal so there must be a reason for that, but it's never addressed beyond that, it's superficial at best.

Overall I think Penn should have done a trilogy or a saga of books where it could be developed well. For a stand alone book there is a lot left loose and unresolved, little character development not only of Blue and the boys, but also of characters like her sister, her roommate and her former best friend, as well as Blue's love relationship. I loved her Noc City trilogy and truthfully expected better. Too bad.

I think this is realistically like 3.5 stars for me. Please Goodreads, give us those half stars!

First, I will admit to (and you can see by my reading history) being a Penn Cassidy fan. I like her heroines, I like the men she writes, I like the way she engages with her fans on her fan pages and social media accounts.

But this book didn't quite hit the mark for me. First...it was a little bit insta-lovey. And I think it's because she absolutely wanted to make sure that this book could be a one-and-done if needed, so things had to move a little faster. But the FMC was just....fine?...about a random dude declaring her his mate. Very little pushback, just kinda thrilled to accept it. Also, Dresden had been obsessed with her for years and years but didn't actually go into much detail around why; although I'm glad we got that final scene with him or I would have been upset! The men were also just fine with the why choose setup, which is okay but seems like it could have warranted a little more discussion.

The thing that bothered me the most has already been mentioned in another review: the reason for her exile and general community shunning is so absolutely unreasonable after being hyped up for literally the entire book. Without spoiling it, I was expecting some giant betrayal or scheme and it was just some poor judgement and planning. And yet the uninvolved children were shunned for life.

Anyway, there was enough half-baked info and weird gaps in the story that this isn't one of my favorites. BUT, it was a fun read (particularly knowing it's functional as a standalone) and kept my interest, so I can't say I am unhappy to have read it.

a rewrite?

Overall I enjoyed this book but was feeling like I had already read it. That’s because I have just under another name and another title. This is basically the same as (character names and all) Blue Blooded by another author names Kayla Michelle (?).

I believe that book was supposed to be a book one of a series and this is a standalone. While some things are different if seems like it’s different to make it a standalone instead of a series. That book is no longer available on kindle but since I own it it was still in my library. Very very odd that this is for all intents and purposes the same book with the same characters, names, plots, scenes and dialogue but that’s not called out anywhere. Also diff author name so idk if that’s actually a new author or just a new pen name.

This book feels unfinished. It would’ve benefited from with being longer and more flushed out of having at least one other book. While k liked the relationship with the guys I think JJ Vanessa and Ronnie where SO one dimensional and could’ve been interesting characters if given the opportunity.

So I liked this but if was also a let down and a copy of another book (not sure if there are circumstances we are unaware of with that thing but it leaves a sour taste in my mouth that’s for sure)

Penn is definitely a one-click author for me! I am continually in awe at how she creates strong women, super spicy scenes and a plot so intriguing that I am hooked from the first chapter. Ashes to Ashes is no exception.

Left to fend for themselves after the death of their parents, Blue who is a fierce warrior alongside her sister Harlow battle nests of revenants to work through their feelings of loss and abandonment until an offer from the Sanctum arrives. Walking back into the fold of people that were responsible for shunning them sets the scene for a read that is full of drama, action, and secrets.

Although Blue had endured unspeakable loss her strength, resilience and determination are what make her character so likable. It was exciting to watch her develop a relationship with her men, each providing her with a sense of love, loyalty, and found family that always have her back.

Honourable mention goes to the kitchen scene. IYKYK.

The writing style flowed smoothly, each character had their own distinct voice and their traits developed nicely throughout the book.

My only complaint is that this book was standalone. I was utterly invested in this story and sad to see it conclude. Hopefully, Penn will write another book in this world. I wouldn’t be mad at a Harlow, Ronnie, David story.
