An elusive killer. A false identity. A deadly maze of lies.
When Coast Guard Investigative Service Special Agent LOGAN PERRY’s beloved grandfather is murdered, Logan races to his hometown of Cauldron Creek, New Mexico to investigate the murder. His teammate and friend, EMMY THORTON, insists on joining him. Not a good idea—not when he loves her, but carries a secret that he knows will tear them apart.

What looks like a robbery gone wrong rapidly shifts, drawing Emmy and Logan into a dizzying maze where nothing is as it appears. Every lead slips through their fingers as threats against them grow deadlier at each turn. Having only each other to rely on, their love for one another deepens, but will they live long enough to admit their attraction to each other?
They’re in the killer’s sights. One wrong move puts their future together and their lives on the line.

THE SHIFTING CURRENT pulls the reader in right from the very first page. Logan finds out that his grandfather is murdered and he heads home to his family ranch. His partner, Emmy doesn’t think twice about going with him to help in any way she can. Logan’s grandfather has always had his back and was always there for him. Logan just can’t wrap his head around why someone would kill him. Tom, the local sheriff is struggling with letting Emmy and Logan help investigate the case. He knows Logan is obviously emotionally tied to the case, but agrees to let them help anyway.
THE SHIFTING CURRENT is only the second book I’ve ever read by Dani Pettrey and it definitely won’t be the last. The twists and turns keep coming and I had to know how it was going to end! Every time I thought I knew where this story was going, a few pages later, Ms. Pettrey threw me for a loop and I knew I was wrong! The only downside to THE SHIFTING CURRENT is that it is a novella and I found myself wanting more, much more of Logan and Emmy.
THE SHIFTING CURRENT is a quick read and unputdownable! If you are looking for a great story with lots of mystery to pull you out of your book slump, you can’t go wrong with THE SHIFTING CURRENT . I’m so excited to read more by Dani Pettrey. The way Logan tries to protect Emmy over and over again really warmed my heart. He is still trying to deal with the loss of his grandfather and isn’t sure if he’s ready to move on. While he is trying to keep Emmy safe he begins to question what is in his heart.
The twists and turns in THE SHIFTING CURRENT are going to keep you up late into the night trying to figure it out. One minute you believe you know whats going to happen to Logan and Emmy and the next you are sitting there shaking your head, wondering what the heck just happened. Once you start reading, trust me, you aren’t going to be able to stop! When everything is finally revealed, well, you won’t believe it!
THE SHIFTING CURRENT has Logan working with Emmy. Logan loves her, but he is carrying A secret that will tear them apart. I thoroughly enjoyed reading THE SHIFTING CURRENT. There is so much going on in this story, but Ms. Pettrey does a wonderful job of weaving all the pieces together. I loved how there was a new surprise in almost every chapter and really kept me guessing. Once you finish devouring this story, you are going to want to tell everyone you know about this awesome story of Christian romantic suspense at its finest!
I received a complimentary copy of this book through JustRead Tours. All opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given.
I have been looking forward to Emmy and Logan’s story for so long and this novella was all that I could have asked for…and more! I loved seeing Emmy offering comfort, support, and strength to Logan as he dealt with the incredibly difficult task of helping to investigate his own grandfather’s murder. There were so many special times when you could see the heart of these two characters for each other. And when they began to acknowledge the reality of their feelings….well, cue plenty of swoonworthy moments, please!
This story had some great suspense, a wonderful setting in New Mexico, a beautiful blossoming of romance, and such a great epilogue! This will definitely be a book I will enjoy rereading.
If you have read the Coastal Guardians series, you will appreciate a wrap up to the characters in the series. However, you can jump into this novella and enjoy it even if you have not read the other books.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, however, I also preordered an ecopy for myself and one for my daughter, as well. All opinions are my own.
Despite the compact novella form, The Shifting Current by Dani Pettrey had no shortage of mystery and suspense. The well-crafted crime/mystery held my interest as Logan and Emmy searched for a murderer and surrendered to their feelings for each other. This was less of a falling-in-love tale and more of a how-do-they-get-together story.
As far as characters go, The Shifting Current had an interesting villain that I almost liked. I think she could carry her own story in a subsequent novella if she was given a redemption arc. Logan and Emmy were perfect together, and I enjoyed how their skill sets complemented each other. Some things in Logan’s character development felt underdeveloped or a bit too convenient, common issues caused by the shortened form of a novella.
The Shifting Current lands as installment 3.5 of Dani Pettrey’s Coastal Guardians series. I have not read any other books in the series, and I felt like I was missing Emmy and Logan’s backstory as they were already head-over-heels in love with each other at the start of this story. I suspect I would have enjoyed this novella more if I had read the other novels in the Coastal Guardians series.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I was provided a copy of this book by the author or publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.
The Shifting Current was such an amazing read! Even though it was a novella, it didn't feel like one. The storyline didn't seem rushed and I absolutely loved reading it.
It was great to finally see these characters get the spotlight and the romance was sweet. I liked the faith element and seeing Logan grow as a character. I felt so badly for him and what he went through (both in the past and present).
If you are like me and you picked up this novella before you read book one through three, you will be in the same boat as me, but you will not feel like you have missed any backstory. The setting is different to the Coastal Guardian series and is unique on its own. It is a great novella to also introduce new readers to the author’s work.
This novella provides closure to those readers who have read the rest of the series and were hoping for more for Emmy and Logan but is also a great in between for introducing the readers to new characters coming in a new series – do I hear other “Yeahs!”.
Suspense and action were around every corner, and it was fun to watch Emmy and Logan follow the clues and solve the mystery. This novella was also not without heartbreak for Logan.
There were a few open issues which I am hoping will be solved in the new series. And I am putting book 2 and 3 of the coastal guardian series on my priority TBR to read soon!
*I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.*
It might have been too lovey-dovey for me from the get go had I not read previous in the series and been able to see the relationship of these characters. However, it can also stand alone.
Logan is called home to New Mexico when he gets a call that his grandpa, who raised him, is murdered. His colleague and love interest Emmy also takes off work to travel and be with him in helping local Sheriff and Logan's childhood friend solve the case.
Interesting mystery enough to keep me reading and of course caring about the characters from the previous novels. A satisfying novella conclusion to Pettrey's Coastal Guardians series.
This novella is at the end of the Coastal Guardian Series set in North Carolina to the Jeopardy Falls Series set in New Mexico. Enjoyed the action in the pages. While the villain was known from the beginning, the motivation wasn't.
When I finished The Deadly Shallows, I thought that was the conclusion of the series, and I was disappointed because I thought Logan and Emmy needed a story. I shouldn't have worried, though, because here we have it! The Shifting Current might not take place on water, which is the usual setting for this series, but it does feature the signature fast pace and realism that I love from Dani's books. The faith element was a nice touch, and it was so fun seeing the team together at the end. I'm only sad that the series is actually over now.
*I received an electronic copy of The Shifting Current from the author, but was not required to leave a positive review. I was going to pick this one up anyway ;) All thoughts expressed are my own.
The murder of Logan Perry's grandfather hits him home. When he goes home to help with the investigation, Emmy Thorton, his partner in the Coast Guard Investigation Special Services goes with him. They have been a strong team at work, but neither knows that the other loves them. Logan's friend Tom, the county sheriff believes that the young woman whom Logan's grandfather has given refuge to killed and robbed him. Working together as a team, they try to track her down.
As usual, Pettrey's story holds a lot of suspense, emotion, and romance. I was a little uncomfortable with how much time Logan and Emmy spend snuggling once they find out that the other loves them. Pettrey deals with guilt, rejection, and unrequited love while her characters dodge bullets, deal with the relationships from the past, and do high speed vehicular maneuvers. It was a fun read.
You know when you read a series and some characters just stick out to you and you need to know more?! That is what is like reading the Coastal Guardian series. I loved every moment of it but the characters of Emmy and Logan just stuck out to me and I wanted more. I somewhat patiently waited until finally this book came out. While it is a novella and not a full length novel it is pretty mighty and jam packed with suspense.
This is a fast paced book. I mean once it starts there is no putting it down. Immediately we encounter Logan dealing with the tragedy of his grandfather's murder and Emmy is right there not only to help him investigate but she is also there for support. They head out to New Mexico where she learns about Logan's life. I can't tell you too much about this book without giving it away so know that this book and the investigation is almost like a puzzle that you have to slowly decipher. It isn't one of those books that you can tell right away the person who is the villain.
Overall Dani Pettrey finished the series off with a bang. However, I will be the first to admit that I was kind of bummed out that Em and Logan didn't get their own full length book but if you have read the previous stories then you will see their character arcs develop throughout them. That being said I was super excited to see that her next series will be set in New Mexico so perhaps we will see Em and Logan again!! (Fingers crossed we will lol!)
If you enjoy suspense and mystery then this is the series for you. That being said, you definitely have to read this series from the beginning in order to capture the essence of not only the story but also the characters.
I received a copy of this book from Just Read. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
The Shifting Current is my first read from author Dani Pettrey. I was very impressed at how quickly the reader is pulled in. Apparently, these characters are in other books but this one can be read on its own. This Christian, Romantic Suspense novel would be considered a novella but I felt like I'd read a fully written 350-page novel.
The two main characters, Logan and Emmy, work well together as they help to find the people who murdered Logan's grandfather. Their sweet love story is not overshadowed by the suspense but enhanced by what is happening. I enjoyed piecing together the many clues that led to the big revelation at the end. Overall it was a great book and I am for sure going back to read the first three books in this series.
This story was a little different from the others I've read which take place on the water. This one takes place partially in Willmington and the Coast Guard personnel are Special Investigative Agents. Emma Thorton and Logan Perry are partners investigating a murder in Silver City, New Mexico. This one tests Logan's resolve and ability to stay objective.
The main characters are well-developed with lots of layers, especially Logan. I was hooked from the first few pages. The storyline is full of surprises, mystery, suspense, and of course a budding romance. It kept me on the edge of my seat. The faith element was a nice addition to rounding out the emotions of the main characters.
Highly recommended. Another great read from Dani Pettrey.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and voluntarily choose to review it.
Ms. Pettrey gives us another thriller story to wrap up the Coastal Guardian series. Em and Logan are investigators in North Carolina but upon hearing of the murder of Logan’s grandfather, they travel to a ranch in New Mexico to find out what happened to Colt, the man who raised Logan. With the regret that he had not visited his grandpa during the holidays, Logan digs in to solve the crime. Lots of things do not add up. And the girl who Colt befriended seems to hold the clues. But she is nowhere to be found. Excitement and danger are never far behind Logan and Em and romance is not either. A great story with an underlying faith thread and a romance that teases you with: will they tell each other how they feel- or not? *I purchased this ebook from Amazon. All opinions are my own.*
3.5 stars - We've seen Logan and Emmy making eyes at each other through their non-romance in the first three books of the Coastal Guardians series. In this novella, it's time for them to face the truth and realise that of course they're in love with each other. Any of their work colleagues and readers could have already told them that!
The case is a bit too personal this time, with Logan receiving the news that his grandfather Colt has been murdered. Colt pretty much raised Logan, so the news comes as a devastating blow. Emmy insists on flying out to New Mexico to help him work the case, alongside Logan's boyhood friend Tom who is the local sheriff. It turns out that Colt had helped a young drifter by letting her use one of the bunk houses on the property. The woman, going by the name of Mary, has now disappeared and is the No. 1 suspect.
There are some interesting moments in this novella. We see a vulnerable side of Logan we hadn't seen before, and it's nice to see the romance finally moving along. Colt used to set puzzles and codes for Logan and Tom to solve when they were kids, and some of those skills come in handy when they discover some hidden messages Colt has left behind. It appears he was onto something, but what?
The reason I've only given it 3.5 stars is because there were some parts that didn't ring true. (Slight spoiler ahead.) Emmy and Logan are supposed to be top investigators and their boss Noah has rung Tom to sing their praises. When they walk through the crime scene, they start looking at different scenarios. Tom comments on how good they are as a team and Logan says how Emmy is great at working every angle. BUT ... when they discover a second footprint at the scene, they don't run the obvious scenario that the person who owned that print could be the murderer. We don't know if that's true, but surely crack investigators would at least acknowledge the possibility. Even when it becomes apparent that a man hocked a ring stolen from the scene, they still don't consider anything other than the fact that Mary is the killer. It takes ages for them to acknowledge that it could have been either of them. There were a number of times in the first half of the book when I wanted to shake them and say, 'What about the second footprint?' There was also the promise of a subplot with the friction between Logan and deputy sheriff, Denton, who had bullied him as a child. But that never really takes shape as Denton is mostly off the page investigating somewhere else. I know it's hard to resolve all of those threads in a novella-length book, but I thought more was going to happen with that.
However, I thought the scheme that led to Colt's death was interesting and I did like the developing relationship between Logan and Emmy. Elements of faith were also intertwined with the story, as Logan learned to rely more on God. If you've read the other books in the series, you'll enjoy seeing what happens with Logan and Em. Although this book could be read as a stand-alone, I'd suggest going back and reading the others first, as I think the plotting is stronger in the full-length ones. I'm still glad I read this one though.
Small, but mighty! That's how I'd describe this novella. I think when we all finished the first three full length novels in the series we were wondering what happened with Logan and Emmy. You could cut their tension with a knife in the other stories, so I'm glad the author realized they needed their own!
And wowza did they get it! Logan has to deal with the tragedy of his grandfather being murdered, and Em goes along to help investigate who might have done it. They're leaving the East Coast and heading to New Mexico to find out what happened. Really, this story just doesn't let up. Whether it's the intensity of the killer, the investigation, or their relationship, it's non-stop nail biter from start to finish.
I enjoyed watching Logan and Em work together on the case. They make a great pair on the job and off. There was definitely a good amount of sizzle. I really appreciated that they both shared that their faith was of utmost importance and that they wanted to do everything to keep God first. I loved that Emmy mentions that she'd initially had concerns that Logan didn't share her faith. It's so great when authors know how to share a message with it being a natural part of a story while not seeming like it's being forced.
There was literally no way of knowing why he was killed, although we know who did it. Once the pieces of the puzzle start to fit together it all makes sense! Well done on keeping us in the dark.
While I'm not a fast reader, I read the book in a day! It's one of those stories you don't want to put down, and when you do, you wonder what you're missing.
*I received the book for review. This is my personal opinion.
I had to think about this review because I love Dani Pettrey's books... but this one missed on some key things for me. I'd say this was a solid 3.5 stars - I liked it, but didn't love it. What I did love: Logan and Emmy - c'mon! We've all been waiting for this! So it was great to see them get together. The setting - I'd visit Colt's place in a heartbeat. Getting a glimpse into Logan's childhood.
What missed for me: The lack of the other team members. It would have been great to catch up with all of them, but while Logan and Emmy went to NM, the rest of the team stayed behind. We didn't really get any of them in the epilogue either (other than a brief encounter with Noah in which we learned nothing about where he's at) The convenience of some of the connections. While it was great to see Logan and Emmy get together - I would have liked to see a bit more of them finding their way. They spent so many years avoiding a relationship and it just fell right into a full blown relationship early on - even talking marriage before they've really even dated. The ending... I didn't see that coming and I'm not sure I can accept it. LOL There was one scene in particular that just left me rolling my eyes. I grew up in a family of truck drivers and I knew immediately that that scene would have gone entirely differently in real life.
Overall, it was a good novella in that it kept my attention and I wanted to know what happened. It just won't take the place as a favorite in the end.
The Shifting Current by Dani Pettrey jumps right into the action.
I enjoyed reading Logan and Emmy's story. While everyone they work with knows that Logan and Emmy have feelings for each other, they are in denial. However, when Logan's grandfather is murdered, Logan has to leave immediately for New Mexico, and guess who insists on going with him? You know it! His friend, Emmy.
I enjoyed how centrally focused the story was. There is one mystery and one storyline. Sometimes with suspense stories, so much is going on it is hard to follow. This story is refreshing. It was not easy to figure out the bad guys and why they did what they did.
The Shifting Current is easy to read and hard to put down. While it can easily be read as a stand-alone novel, you will have a greater appreciation of the story by reading the first three novels.
Thank you to JustReads Publicity and the author for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This story was a bit of a change of pace from the first three in the series but only in the sense of location. Though not near the CG base, there was no less tension, intense investigation and race for justice that I've come to expect from a Coastal Guardians story. I loved the plot lines and the flow of the investigation - even if the case was heartbreakingly sad. It's so clear that Dani loves to write a good story that is not only plausible but expertly fits in the parameters of a real investigation. The timing of how everything plays out is frustratingly realistic and I truly got a sense of the determination Logan and Emmy had to solve the case. It was also really good to see Logan and Emmy finally find the love they were both looking for. I've been waiting to see how that would play out since book 1 and I'm so glad everything turned out like it did. I highly recommend you get this book and the rest of the incredible series on your TBR immediately because it is not one that you'll want to miss out on.
I received a complimentary ARC of this story from the author and Just Read tours via BookFunnel. I am not required by anyone to write a positive review and the opinions expressed herein are entirely my own.
Dani Pettrey's books are always a favorite for me, and Shifting Current met my expectation. I thoroughly enjoyed the deep dive into Logan's world and the tender romance finally ready to blossom. Ripe with suspense, danger, and emotions, this was a satisfying conclusion to the Coastal Guardian series, though it can easily be read as a stand-alone story.
The Shifting Current is the 4th installment in the Coastal Guardian series. It is a novella that takes place after the third book. While I think it could be read okay as a standalone, you'll definitely get more backstory by reading the series in order.
I love a good novella, but I also always worry that there is going to be something missing in the story due to its shorter length. I feel like this is especially a concern with suspense... and yet that was not at all the case with this novella. It was a quick read, yes... but it didn't feel rushed or incomplete. I do wonder if that might be because the relationship between Logan and Emmy was already a bit familiar from the previous books. Either way, I couldn't get enough of this story! From start to finish, I was all in wondering what was going to happen next. It was different from the rest of the series as it didn't have a waterfront setting, but was a great addition and one that I thoroughly enjoyed!
If you're looking for a quick, exciting suspense read, this is one not to be missed!
**I received a complimentary copy for consideration. All thoughts are my own.
This fast-paced novella will have you turning pages well past your bedtime. I loved Logan and Em’s characters. I loved seeing them work together and seeing Em’s support of Logan through his grief as they worked the investigation. I thought the coded messages were a neat touch to the unraveling of the story. I loved the twists and turns, and I really couldn’t put it down. I just had to find out how it was all going to come together at the end. Highly recommend this book.
**I received a copy of this book for review as part of the JustRead Publicity Tours group. I was not required to write a positive review and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
This being a novella is probably the root cause of my issues with this book. I love Emmy and Logan so I was excited to finally read their story, but I wish they'd gotten a full length book. I know they've been friends/crushing on one another for the whole series, but they went from "just friends" to engaged in the span of weeks. Yes it's a novella, but that feels extremely rushed to me. And because this is a novella, Dani Pettrey's writing felt more rushed than normal. She does fit a lot of plot in her books, but there just wasn't enough book for her to really sit with a lot of the moments.
I didn't hate the premise of them having to go somewhere else to solve a crime since their normal positions don't exactly lend to being on the front lines of a case, but the banter of the team is what made this series so fun. Emmy and Logan chilling in the desert by themselves made this book lose some of that.
Overall, not the worst book I've ever read, but it was missing some of that Dani Pettrey magic I'm used to.
The Shifting Current is written by Dani Pettrey. This is part of the Coastal Guardians series. I’ve not read all the series and I didn’t have a hard time following along.
Logan finds out that his grandfather is murdered and he heads home to his family ranch. Fellow team mate and his crush, Emmy goes with him. Logan grew up alongside his grandfather, Colt and is shocked that someone would harm him. His grandfather always has been there for him when no one else would be.
The local Sheriff, Tom agrees to let Logan and Emmy help investigate. They are some of the best investigators. They start digging in but it’s clear that someone doesn’t want them looking too much into it. Logan and Emmy find themselves in the killers crosshairs.
This book is full of action and suspense. There is a perfect blend of romance, mystery and faith elements. I loved the whole thing.
Thank you to the author, publisher and JustRead for allowing me to read a copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
Since the first time Logan and Emmy appeared on a page together in Dani Pettrey’s Coastal Guardians series, I wanted more of their story. And oh boy, did Pettrey deliver in The Shifting Current.
This book serves as a bridge between the author’s last series and her upcoming one (as a former resident of New Mexico, I’m looking forward to a full series set there!) but more importantly, it is chock full of the (finally) blooming relationship between Emmy and Logan and suspense that will keep you guessing.
This investigation is personal for Logan and as Emmy supports and comforts him, you can see what a great team they make—in both investigations and in life. And that epilogue? Totally worth the wait!
Disclosure statement: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a positive or negative review. All opinions are my own.
A fantastic conclusion to a great series! It is full of suspense, danger, heartbreak, and hope leaving the reader both fulfilled at the end but sad it is over. This action packed novella definitely could have been a full novel.
Logan and Emmy are two members of the Coast Guard family who have intrigued us with their interactions in other books. Logan’s story took a path that I did not expect for the self proclaimed “trust fund kid”. The journey of his story was full of heartbreak and hope that endured his character to you even more.
While this could be read as a stand alone, the entire series is excellent! I hated to see it end.
I loved this novella! The Shifting Current is a fast-paced Christian romantic suspense book and I could not put it down! I loved the main characters Emmy and Logan and loved their relationship. There was so much action and mystery packed into this short book and I loved every second of it. This is book 3.5 in the Coastal Guardians series, and I love that you can read it as a standalone! This was my first book by Dani Pettrey and it definitely won’t be my last! I definitely recommend picking this one up!
A great addition to Dani Pettrey's Coastal Guardians series! The Shifting Current may be a novella, but there's no shortage of twists, turns, and suspense in its pages.
Coast Guard Investigative Service Special Agent Logan Perry returns home to New Mexico when he hears that his grandfather has been murdered. Teammate Emmy Thornton refuses to let him go alone. Together, they decide to investigate the murder, and of course, the danger proves to be more nefarious than expected. Can they uncover the truth, stay alive, and finally sort out their romance?
What fun! Logan and Emmy are not new characters to fans of the series, but it is good to see them star in their own story. The mystery, the danger, and the complicated feelings all make The Shifting Current a fast-paced, suspenseful read. Its shorter length makes it even harder to put down than one of Pettrey's typical books, and I was very satisfied by the time I reached the end. I am sure that other fans of romantic suspense—especially ones of this series—will be pleased with this novella!
I received a complimentary copy of this book and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.
And with that the Coastal Guardians series comes to an end, and what an end it was. In the conclusion to the series we get to follow Logan and Emmy’s story as Logan is called back home due to the murder of his grandfather. Since this is a novella it is a relatively quick read however make sure you set aside the time as you will not want to put it down.
I’ve loved Dani’s Pettrey since her first story and this series is no different, we’ve spent so much time with these characters and the series was given the ending it deserved. I cannot wait to see what comes next for Pettrey.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
