Jealousy breeds betrayal.A young woman is strangled in her bed. The door is smashed in and the apartment ransacked. Is this a robbery gone wrong? A random attack? A jealous lover? Or a serial killer? It's up to Detective Erin O'Reilly, her K-9 Rolf, and the rest of her Major Crimes squad to find out the truth before anyone else dies. It's a simple case; or is it? Erin has been able to keep an uneasy balance between her personal and work lives. She's always known it was risky to let herself fall for a gangster. But now, she and her boyfriend, smooth-talking Irishman Morton Carlyle, find themselves drawn into a situation in which the only escape is for the two of them to choose a side and take a stand. Jealousy and betrayal are in the air. Who do you trust when your lover could be your enemy?
Steven Henry is the USA Today bestselling author of the Erin O’Reilly mysteries and the Clarion Chronicles.
Steven learned how to read almost before he learned how to walk. Ever since he began reading stories, he wanted to put his own on the page. He lives a very quiet and ordinary life in Minnesota with his wife and dog.
My all time favourite series and author. He needs to be recognized for his gritty, true-to-life characters, great knowledge of history and all things Irish. I love the length of the stories and number of characters. These books are safe and wholesome enough to appeal to a vast array of ages. They should be made into a TV series.
I can't stop reading! This was actually two stories taped together; the first about the murder of a woman in her own apartment, and the second about Erin and her love life--things going on in her apartment. By the time I was reading about the excitement of Erin's relationship with Carlyle, I had almost forgotten about what the first part of the book was about. I can hardly wait to read the next book!
Found this the most engaging book in the series yet. Great quotes found to be remembered. Am savoring this book to the very last. Will reread the last few chapter again.
That was quite a ride! The story just keeps getting better! I have never ever binged a series like this. Hell! I have never read a book series with more than 7 books in it!
Wow, Mr. Henry really upped the stakes here in book #10! I was beginning to think that the romance between Erin and Cars was just a side story but no, the relationship comes screaming up and jumps in your face. Erin and Cars are discussing telling her family about their relationship. But in the mean time, she and her team have to find a murderer; and some bad guys from Belfast show up, and there is gun play. How is Corky involved? Or is he? Can't wait to crack open book 11!
I got hooked on this series with Book 1, Black Velvet, and fell in love with the dog, Rolf and Erin O’Reilly, a very strong NY traditional Irish cop following in her dad’s footsteps. She has been promoted to detective in Major Crimes. She had a special guy I was rooting for that didn’t work. Now her interest is an immigrant Irishman with a history who runs a bar. Unfortunately, Carlyle is a mid-level organized crime associate of the O’Malley Irish mob. Her involvement with him creates somewhat of a quandary for her.
Topping this episode is the death of a young woman whose apartment is made to look like a botched robbery and the crew jumps all too easily on a guy witnessed in the building before; my first quibble. Rolf has a small contribution to this storyline, my second, as I love the scenes with these powerful working canines. As with all police procedurals, there are the associates, supervisors, good and bad, who make for interesting support characters, as well as Carlyle’s driver/bodyguard, Ian.
The sub-plot then comes to the fore as the initial crime is solved and the storyline goes a bit off the rails. I can’t say too much here as it would only add spoilers. Book 10, however, exploded into a hurried conclusion resulting in a cliff hanger. Book 11, High Stakes, will be coming out the end of March this year.
Much as I like the character of Erin, it seems she is being steered into a double direction, although she’ll continue to perform her K-9 partnering duties with Rolf. Still, I’m torn.
First Love is book #10 in the Erin O'Reilly K-9 mysteries series by Steven Henry.
My absolute favorite character in this series is the K-9 German Shepherd Dog, Rolf. The way the author describes this dog's smile and actions are a priceless addition to an otherwise perfect series. For example: "Rolf kept listening, waiting for her (Erin) to get to the part where they chased the bad guys. That was his favorite part of every case.' (page 27). Delving into Rolf's personal psyche is a wonderful way of building the character of major animals in books, as well as minor animal characters.
My second favorite character is the human main player, Erin O'Reilly, because without a good human copy, you can't have a great and fantastic K-9 cop.
I can't say anything else more about this particular book because I'll give away the ending. All I can say is that I cried nearly all the way through the book from chapters 16 to the end. I couldn't stop. I understand that the author, Steven Henry, also cried, so I don't feel bad about bawling my eyes out. I hope everything turns out okay in the next episode that is due out on March 26, 2021. I truly hope everything turns out okay.
Because of the love story between Erin O'Reilly and Morton Carlyle, and because of all the nonstop action, and because I love the characters in this series, I gave this book 5 stars, but I would have given it more if I could have.
Well, as usual Mr. Henry puts forth fast action, tension and lots of police work for Erin and crew. Even more involvement with Carlyle and the O’Malley gang however puts Erin in the crosshairs for real with her department. No spoilers here but I do not like what is happening (another sign of good writing because I am now so involved with the characters). Sigh.
Before you know it you're hooked. The plot is ever evolving. The forbidden love of Erin and Carlyle. You are always hooked with the changes in the development of the story.🙂
