Being Ines

Rate this book
Making the right decision hasn’t always been Ines Garcia’s strongest point.
A dynamic young woman with her finger on the fashion pulse, she’s living the London dream.

That’s great…or so it should be. Choosing to ignore the fact that her elusive boyfriend is not quite the guy she thought he was, is bad enough, but then ignoring the simmering chemistry between her and her friend, Luke, is frustrating for everyone!

A routine visit to the optician changes her life as she knows it. Will Ines pick herself up and find the happiness she is missing, or let the diagnosis and her relationship, drag her under a rollercoaster of emotions?

This was a really delightful read, combining often quite diverse elements. There is a breezy romance at its heart, but the story also takes time to explore the ways in which the main protagonist comes to terms with her own quite sudden and debilitating medical condition. It's quite confessional and there are clearly moments when the author is reflecting upon and remembering her own personal struggles. I enjoyed the pace of the novel and the hesitancy and often comical inner monologues of "Ines". Pulling off something which is both lighthearted and warm, whist also revealing considerable personal challenges is quite a feat, and one told with great style and charm.

This is a remarkably well-grounded story, believable on every level.
Ines exhibits the 'typical' contradictory needs of a tough young modern woman, who is still vulnerable in the sense of needing love, trust and companionship, making the often made mistake of putting too much of herself into her love, and often ignoring what is blatantly playing out before her eyes, out of insecurity.
The plot of the story is rock solid, although at times the character can appear to be weak due to her ingrained trust issues, and her inate sense of denial and angst in most aspects of her life, including her health, which can be a bit annoying to the reader.
However, this also only enhances the plausibility of the story, which is a familiar scenario for many of us, male or female, in all the challenges of our daily life.
A resoundingly good read.

I've laughed, raged, and rooted for Ines.
This is not a romcom. it's so much more.
I quite literally bawled my eyes out at her diagnosis and all the horrendous feelings she's going through to deal with and live with this illness. With a manipulating, awful boyfriend to boot. She is so strong and inspiring.
Luke is just amazing with her. He is everything Dylan is not.
What a roller coaster ride I'm privileged to be on with the indomitable Ines.
I think her story will help a lot of people come to terms with a lifelong illness being thrown at you.
Most of you will also relate to Ines' life and loves. Especially the rite of passage narcissistic bad boyfriend and all that entails.

This book takes you through all manner of human emotions.
You want to be Ines' friend, you want Dylan to be hit by a bus, and you want her to get a happy ending with the always supportive and strong Luke who clearly loves her.

All in all, I loved being in Ines' world, with all the pain and all the love that comes with it.

It is a beautiful story of life with all its ups and downs, cruelties, and wins. The very meaning of what it means to be alive.

No ordinary romance. Really enjoyed this book!

Loved this story. Ines is dealing with a bad romance, a platonic relationship that may turn romantic and most importantly a diagnosis of MS.
The characters are well written and have depth. I found it very realistic and it brought me back to the days I worked in London City in offices.
