Billionaire Wolf #4

Wolf Takes the Lead

Rate this book
USA Today bestselling author Terry Spear combines billionaire and shifter romance in a sexy, action-packed paranormal love story with a dash of fake dating.

Billionaire wolf Derek Spencer may have a rocky history with she-wolves, but there's no one better to take as his date to the latest gala than the wolf he's had his eye on ever since she applied to be his bodyguard—the remarkable Kate Hanover. Kate checks all the boxes for his perfect mate: she's smart, sexy, and business savvy, not to mention one of the best bodyguards around.

But ever since Derek gave his bodyguard position to another wolf, Kate has been avoiding him. It's only when she reluctantly agrees to be his date to the gala that she realizes why: the attraction between the two alpha wolves is undeniable, but Kate doesn't want to end up as one of the billionaire's many flings. The more time Kate and Derek spend together, the more they are in danger...of falling deeply in love.

Wolf Takes the Lead by Terry Spear is the fourth book in the Billionaire Wolf series. It is a paranormal romance novel with some suspense, and is set in California on the coast. Billionaire wolf Derek Spencer has been disappointed in his past relationships with female wolves, but he is looking forward to taking Kate Hanover to the charity gala. Kate had applied to be his bodyguard, but he selected a male wolf instead to avoid mixing personal and business relationships. Kate has been avoiding him since her rejected her application, but she agrees to be his last minute date for the gala. This is the beginning of Derek and Kate getting to know each other better. However, things keep going wrong. What happens next is an entertaining story of suspense, action, and romance.

Kate and Derek are likeable characters. However, their relationship seems to progress a little too quickly in this story. Trying to come to terms with and understand the fallout from their past interaction doesn’t provide quite enough angst. However, the chemistry between them is fun and brings a lot of laughter to the book. I enjoyed spending them with characters from previous books in the series as well.

Several twists and surprises enhanced the storyline. The writing was compulsively readable and engrossing. There was always something new and exciting happening. These ranged from plot twists to new adventures for the couple to danger and suspense.

Overall, I this was fun to read and had great characters. It was well crafted, entertaining and I would recommend it to those that read this genre. It worked well as a standalone novel. However, having read the previous book in the series, I enjoyed spending time with old friends, too. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

My dudes. I cannot.

Apologies in advance. I have a wicked headache and it's making me cranky. I'm sorry. I'm sure the author is a lovely person. I looked at her profile. She makes adorable bears. She seems to genuinely love writing, she has an audience, and she's written like 60 trillion books. Fucking kudos and brava. Keep doing what you're doing.

That said, I cannot not shit all over this book right now.

Authors, please. For the love of fucking god. Do not give stupid pet names to genitals and expect anyone to find that hot.

In this book, the clitoris is referred to as the "nubbin"

"Then he found her nubbin and began stroking her"

"Then he slipped a hand between her legs and began his slow seduction of rubbing her nubbin"

"Their hearts were pounding hard and fast when he began to work on her nubbin"

"He slid his hand over her belly and then lower, through her short curly hairs, and then he connected with her nubbin"

"He stole her thoughts with his heady strokes on her nubbin"

"His questing fingers continued to stroke her nubbin"

Throughout this book, it is the only term used to refer to the clitoris. I actually lol'd out loud on more than one occasion because of how fucking badly this shit was written. It's like...

On which note, who puts their soaped up digits into a vagina? Who wants their vagina lubed up with soap? My urethra is stinging at the thought of this. My meatus is unhappy with the visions this evokes.

In terms of sexy bits, please note that no one is getting their junk licked or sucked in this book. The only sexual exploits are finger banging and wang jacking until they finally have sex (which is underwhelming). Throughout, these acts are referred to as unconsummated love.

"We made unconsummated love with each other on Sunday night." Oh, did you do it after bible study? I doubt anyone took their metaphorical socks off for these shenanigans.

I don't know if you've ever watched Orgazmo, which is an excellent ridiculous movie, but there is a part where one of the porn stars is having porn sex, and the guy's like 'yeah I'm gonna give it to you' or something, and she replies 'oh good, because I'm so badly wanting it' and she says it so perfectly terribly, like the best fake porn robotic acting voice. This is the voice in which I read such things as:
"He just had to pleasure her and make her come to prove to her he had what it took to make her collide with heaven and earth and shatter into a million pieces of ecstasy."

"Just from showering and thinking of their hands running all over each other's soapy body, his drying her hair had all been enough to prep her for making love to him--again."

"He moaned. 'Man, does that feel great.'"

And what is this leave it to beaver vibe? "But boy, when it came to making love to him, all that tiredness sure had gone away." Shucks Beaver, that sure was wholesome. Boy Wally, you sure are right.

Exclamation points abound!!

It's awkward as fuck, super stilted, and tangential, including such riveting information as: ""They swam for a bit, got out of the pool, and grabbed terrycloth robes out of an outdoor closet, and she smiled. 'Wow, now this is living.' He smiled at her. 'I never expected to be wrapping up my wolf mate in a terrycloth robe here anytime soon.'"

One thing I strongly dislike in any writing is the use of the same word too close in succession, and unnecessarily. Why? We already know it's fucking terrycloth.

Okay, I know I sound petty, but throughout this fucking book we read the most extraneous, inane bullshit, and it's written in a way that is like.. I don't know how to explain it. Like a fucking children's book. Like every action needs to be explained after it is already explained. We know that fire is hot, for example, but this book just has to let you know that the hot flaming flame burned her with its fiery hotness.

So much is told. While you could easily have the character say "I hope it works out," you instead get "Kate thought Lexi was right and hoped everything would work out the way they hoped it would." Like, for everything. "'I hope so.' And really, Kate did. Then she walked on the path to her inane home."

Okay that was a legit Freudian slip. She actually just says she walks on the path to her home. I'm leaving it.

"Then they ate their meal. While drinking sarsaparillas poolside, they talked over some business, comparing sales data for various product lines, phasing out a line of cosmetics, and a few products in another line that weren't selling well. Afterward, they swam in the pool. Kate heard the guys watching football on TV in the house and smiled."

Fuck off. Fuck right off with this filler. This book has more filler than Naruto.

Also, how fast are these people shifting? Like, okay whatever it's magic, but it just seems like there's no difficulty to it, no effort, no downside. It's instant. Children are born wolves one minute, the next they turn into human babies. One time they left the house in wolf form, just to get to the gate, change back to human, lock the gate behind them, and change back.

I'm scanning my notes checking to see if I've forgotten to bitch about anything. I will leave you with this note to self:

"Almost DNFd at the 70% nubbin"

This one was ok. I didn't get the reluctance both Derek and Kate had before this book and at the start of this one. They seemed to get along great, each of them liked the low key dates they went on, despite Derek having tons of money to do more elaborate dates. The thing with Derek's ex was predictable and got old fast. I was glad that everything worked out in the end for them.

Derek is a wolf shape shifter who only dates human women his heart was broken twice by Shapeshifting females and he doesn’t want to risk it again. When his current girlfriend Brenda gives him an ultimatum to get engaged or to break up he’s sets her free. After all he told her in the beginning it could never be more than casual friendship. This however leaves him with the problem there’s a social engagement that he was going to go with Brenda to but now that they have broken up he needs a date. When he asked his good friend rider they set him up with K. She was Lexi‘s bodyguard but originally applied to be the bodyguard for Derek but because she was female and the shape shifter he didn’t hire her but any awkwardness quickly passes in from the beginning Kate shows the route she is unlike any woman Shapeshifter or not that he’s ever met. I love the story I love how despite Kate wanted Derek she played coy and didn’t give in until she knew it was going to be something real. I loved everything about this book and although I usually say Shapeshifting books are my guilty pleasure this is one I would be proud to tell others to read it really is a good book with a great story and I can’t wait for the next book. I received this book from NetGalley and the publisher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

I enjoyed Derek and Kate's courtship. They genuinely liked each other and play well together. Very romantic!

Derek Spencer, billionaire wolf shifter has decided to stick to dating human women after opening his heart to two of the she-wolves he’d loved and then lost to other wolves. Now the unexpected has happened. Derek's human girlfriend is demanding an engagement or she'll dump him and leave him without a date to the charity and social event of the year.

Derek's needs a date and his pack mates recommend Kate Hanover, wolf and bodyguard. There's one problem, Derek refused to hirer Kate as his bodyguard fearing that like other she wolves she'd be after him for his money. Kate reluctantly agrees and they both have an enjoyable time together at the gala. As Derek and Kate spend more time together and a true courtship begins, danger follows. This puts her life in risk and Derek goes into protection mode and calls in the pack for help. But, Kate wonders is Derek only concern about another pack mate and this is only a fling. Will Derek be able to convince Kate he's here to stay before he loses her to the danger that's stalking her

So enjoyed this book of rediscovery . Kate had applied to be a bodyguard and been rejected. Not because of qualifications but of interest. As she replaced a date with a human she displayed her wolfish possession and the games of revenge begins.

I loved this book . It was a little longer than normal but it enthralled and kept the movement going forward. I just loved the crises presented and the resolutions. Each a positive result for the heroine, Kate! I was so happy for this book , thank you for this resolution!

Derek is a billionaire wolf shifter who needs a date for a function. Kate is another wolf shifter who took a bodyguard position with someone else when he didn't hire her. The two find something more together.

I love Terry's books and this one is no exception. The book's well-written with wonderful characters and a well-developed plot. The relationship between the main characters is well-done and I love their interactions. I was drawn into this captivating story and kept hooked from beginning to end. The romance, intrigue, and suspense were a great combination. I highly recommend both book and series, and I always look forward to TErry's next book.

Quick Summary: A wolf to wolf romance

My Review: Wolf Takes the Lead by Terry Spear was a mixed bag love story.

The underlying love match between the main characters, Derek and Kate, was of the insta-click variety. It lacked veracity, in my opinion. The chemistry they had was seemingly manufactured. Their coupling came across like a high schoolers attempt at "petting and parking" for the first time. Unfortunately, every time the couple came together to "mate," it was too much fluff and not enough substance. It was almost unbelievable.

The most interesting aspects of the story related to the drama concerning an ex lover of the alpha and the descriptions of food prepared for the wolves to eat on various occasions.

I adored the inclusion of the dogs. The love and care shown towards them was sweet.

My Final Say: I really wanted to love this story. It was just an ok read to me. It had enough draw to attract my attention, but it needed more punch when it came to the connection between the main characters. Also, there were a number of places where the story could have ended, yet it kept going. I was a bit put off by it, honestly. By the time I got to the epilogue, I was quite happy to be done.

Terry Spear's wolf shifter romances are very popular with those who enjoy a little paranormal flair in stories of finding the perfect mate. This time Derek Spencer, friend and fellow billionaire to the Denali brothers, is dumped by his girlfriend and needs a last minute date for a big charity gala. His friends arrange for Kate Hanover to be his plus-one, but it starts off the evening on an awkward note since Derek hadn't hired her when she applied to be one of his bodyguards. Things smooth out over the course of the evening...at least until someone fires a shot and all the bodyguards, including Kate, spring into action.

Over the course of a few more charity appearances and a camping trip with their friends, Derek and Kate hit it off on a personal level. But it seems that Kate may need to hire guards of her own when someone begins following her car and threatening her in other ways. Is it because of her involvement in the cosmetics firm of her employer? Or does someone want to keep her from becoming part of Derek's life?

I really enjoy how Spear works in characters from her previous books as she expands on each series. This one includes Rafe and Jade from Billionaire in Wolf's Clothing, Aidan and Holly from A Billionaire Wolf for Christmas, and Lexi and Ryder from Night of the Billionaire Wolf. Whether they are dealing with Jade's son accidentally hooking one of the adults rather than a fish, persistent paparazzi, or would-be assassins, the friends always pull together and face the difficulty. I think readers also enjoy the way the wolf shifters take time to court each other and make sure the match is a good one, since they mate for life.

This title is due out on February 7, 2023. I read an advance copy supplied by the publisher for review purposes.

Wolf Takes the Lead is a beautiful journey filled with breathtaking discoveries and undeniable passion. Within these pages you will lose your heart to its amazing characters that will never fail to dazzle and delight. This story will create a desire to jump into the other books of this series to find out all you can about each incredible couple. This is a series filled with devastating hope and surprising devotion.

Derek knows what he wants. He enjoys the women he takes out, but to him they are safe. He isn't worried about falling for them like he would a certain she-wolf named Kate. He would be completely lost to her if she allowed him to pursue her properly. Kate is in a wonderful place right now. She enjoys her job, she loves her friends, and she doesn't need anyone in her life to be complete. Being un-mated suits her perfectly fine until it doesn't. Can Kate open her heart and her mind to something utterly wondrous and a bit scary before she loses it forever, and will Derek allow himself one more chance before closing himself off completely to love?

What a fun and well-balanced couple Derek and Kate make! They each long for what only the other can provide, but they have to be able to willingly give it up no matter what. watching Kate broaden her heart and her horizon was awe-inspiring, and Derek showed me just how terrifying and exhilarating it is to let go and let things happen as they will. I loved how patient they were with each other knowing what was truly at stake. It was such a beautiful story to watch unfold piece by piece.

Terry Spear has breathed life into this incredibly touching and truly unforgettable story. Her heart shines through the pages as it lights up your life for a time. How wonderful it is to find yourself drowning in unfettered possibilities instead of facing the cold world around us. This was a great escape, and I look forward to more from this great author.

Wolf Takes the Lead is the fourth title in the Billionaire Wolf series (which is, in turn, connected to the larger Heart of the Wolf world). Kate and Derek’s story could easily stand on its own, yet there are old book friends to revisit for those of us who have read the earlier books. The choice is yours, and my opinion that you’ll get more enjoyment from reading this series in order is just that… my opinion.

I had such fun with Derek and Kate’s romance, the chemistry between them is obvious, but their hesitation to act on that is part of what makes this an intriguing story. Derek only dates human women, never a shifter. He has his reasons, but fate is about to teach him a few lessons. Kate had applied for the position of bodyguard for Derek at one time; however, he made a different choice, and that still stings as Kate is very good at what she does. Fast forward to a casual relationship ending suddenly over an ultimatum, an upcoming gala, and the need for a date will bring these two back together once again on far different ground.

This story is filled with banter, sizzling attraction, and danger when Kate is suddenly targeted by an unseen enemy. A few unexpected twists, and the realization that they’ve found their mate will have Kate and Derek fighting side by side. We’ll run into some familiar faces from earlier in the series as friends come to the aid of this newly minted pair of wolves who have to finally admit that they need someone… each other to face the future together. If you love a well-written Shifter Romance with fast-paced action, steamy encounters, and just an overall good time… then you should be picking up this one right now.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

Derek Spencer is a billionaire wolf. He’s just been given an ultimatum by his current girlfriend to marry her or she’ll break up with him. Derek is now scrambling to find someone to go with him to a charity event that night. Kate Hanover is a bodyguard and assistant to a billionaire cosmetics company owner. She applied to be a bodyguard for another billionaire but was turned down. When the man who didn’t hire Kate as a bodyguard calls and wants her to be his date, sparks fly. Kate and Derek just maybe meant for each other, and when danger comes into the equation. Which Wolf Takes the Lead?

Wolf Takes the Lead is the fourth book in the Billionaire Wolf series by Terry Spear. The story revolves around Derek Spencer and Kate Hanover who have a past and same friends. She applied for a job as his bodyguard and he didn’t hire. When Derek is dumped by his current girlfriend just before a big charity event with the ultimatum to marry her, he’ll need a date. A call to his friend and Kate’s boss has them going to the event together. They work together to show the girlfriend she’s not missed and it soon starts to become much more for the both of them. She’s worried about him dumping her to move on to the next human girlfriend and he’s not wanting to repeat the last time he dated a she wolf and a broken heart. Wolf Takes the Lead has two main characters who have been attracted to each other since they first met but their perceptions of each other and not wanting a broken heart keep them apart until a last minute date brings them together like all their friends know they should be. Add in danger and these two will have to work together to figure out who is behind it all. Their similarities are what keep them coming back for more and as the tension between them amps up each fight their feeling because they don’t want to get hurt. Terry Spear’s Wolf Takes the Lead the the fourth and recent book in her Billionaire Wolf series. It’s the final two single wolves in the pack who’ve had a crush on each other for awhile but haven’t acted on their feelings until a cancelled date and a friend help to bring them into what is supposedly going to be a one time date. Terry Spear brings a unique perspective on shifter novels with a group of Billionaire wolves living and loving while they expand their pack with families and friends. A must read for Spear fans and hopefully it won’t be the last book in her Billionaire Wolf series and a few more will come to town or this group might find a way to make their own community like her Silvertown Wolf series.

Fun and action packed

Derek is dumped by his human date right before a charity gala. Kate was the bodyguard applicant he didn't hire because he was worried about a conflict of interests. So he asked her to go with him to the gala. But his former girlfriend is not happy that he found a replacement so quickly. From there a ton of things happen, some fun and some exciting. See if Derek and Kate end up mating or not. There are a ton of twists and turns in this story!

The pace is fast and the tone is uncertain yet hopeful with a character and action oriented storyline that has some steamy scenes. The characters are vibrant and kickass. The dogs are great characters too. It was nice to catch up with the other Billionaire Wolves as well. Read these books in order to get the most out of this series. If you like hot alpha shifters (both male and female) along with a ton of action and some cuddles with the dogs, they this is for you! Enjoy! BTW, if you like this series, the whole Heart of the Wolf series that blankets these smaller series is at least 38 books now with a few novellas and interspersing the Heart of the Jaguar books and the Heart of the Shifter books as well within them.

Enjoyable read! I enjoyed this being a story more about relationships, family (aka wolf pack) with minor mystery and few pages I had to skim as I am more of behind closed door when it comes to hanky panky. In my younger days more was better, now its like enough already. I digress, that was not the issue here :) Surprise I am not a fan of Billionaire books as they are usually rude, arrogant with the proverbial heart of gold - not here, thank you! Terry was not afraid to have a Billionaire who gave to charities, was polite to people etc. What a refreshing change of pace! I liked Derek! I liked Kate who was a bodyguard. I really enjoyed watching this relationship grow, between 2 adults not playing games! While someone appears to be targeting Kate, the real win to me was the getting to know the two main characters, watching them getting to know each other and the humor that Kate welded like a sword. A truly enjoyable entertaining story. Thank you for the arc! I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions! #Wolftakesthelead #billionairewolf #terryspear #sourcebookscasablanca #netglley

Loved This Story!

Feisty Dire Wolf Sheila knew what she wanted out of life and it wasn’t the sexy male Lion who is one of the town’s Police Detectives. He’s everywhere and making his interest know, even though she had told him no numerous times and had recognised him as her fated mate!

Leo recognised Sheila as his fated mate the moment he set eyes on her, she’d told him no numerous times when he’d approached her and would not discuss that they were fated mates with him but he was patient, always watching, waiting until he could claim her, slow and steady won the race!

Ooh such a fast paced, sexy read, full of passion that burns the pages, witty moments that had me laughing and a twist to the story which was unexpected. I love the secondary characters within his pack, so funny and personalities that shone from the pages.

I really loved this second story within the series, bring on the next story, I cannot wait!

I've enjoyed reading about the wolf shifter books early in Terry Spear's career, but hadn't read any of her books in several years and was excited to read this one. Unfortunately, this wasn't one of my favorite books of hers. I was a bit underwhelmed by it and it felt that nothing of importance actually happened.

Derek was kinda boring and his reasoning for dating humans instead of wolves made sense, but in execution was just messy and he didn't seem to understand his own reactions to Kate.

Kate seemed nice, but because I was underwhelmed by the book, I was kinda underwhelmed by her too. But I did find her career paths to be interesting and honestly it felt pretty relatable because I've had an interesting career path myself. Kate was definitely a leader and I found it admirable that she was confident in herself and took charge with Brenda being a menace to Derek.

The best parts were Derek's dogs.

This was a cute read that was fun and flirty and had a cast of great characters. We had such fun with Derek and Kate’s romance, the chemistry between them awesome as well as their banter both a little hesitant to get involved because of past relationships going awry and then Derek only dating humans but, it was impossible to ignore the chemistry between them and only a matter of time when then acted on it.

Kate was my favorite character as she made me laugh the entire story and we loved Derek as well once he finally got his head out of you know what and see what was right before his eyes. These characters are perfect and meant for one another.

Overall it was one of those light fun reads that was quite enjoyable and we read it in one sitting.

This is the first book I have read by Terry Spears. The author created likable characters who come to life on page. Derek Spencer tried of dating humans and has issues with She-Wolves. Giving up on romance Derek friends step in with Kate Hanover she wolf.

Kate and Derek characters work being they are werewolves not trying but trying to find their mate. The romance is very sweet and just the right blend for this style of writing.

The story moves quickly giving readers what I can assume they can expect from Terry Spear. The story is balanced with romance, character build and plot.

Ok, so I really, really wanted to love this story. The blurb made it sound super good and I was really excited for it. But I had a really hard time getting into this book. The romance between Derek and Kate seemed to be slightly immature and kinda boring. There seemed to be a lot of juvenile making out vs real, live wanting to have sex and be together in a normal adult way. And don't even get me started on the nickname! The writing itself isn't horrible. And I ordinarily like this author's books, so I am really hoping this is a one off for me. But I honestly didn't enjoy this one. Here's to hoping the next one is better for me!

Terry Spears has created a great read filled with great characters focusing on relationships, family, a little spice and, of course, HEA. A fast paced shifter story that keeps you interested. Kate and Derek’s story is full of romance, a jealous ex, and two people not looking for love, but wind up finding it. Ms. Spear has a new fan and I can’t wait to read more of her books.

Wow. I don’t think I could have cared less about this book. While the writing was fine it also never got deeper than surface level. The characters had no depth or motivation. And the book just seemed terribly out dated (disposable cameras?!).

I’ve read some of the authors older stuff such as the highland wolf series and those were pretty good. Seems like they are just phoning it in now.. I don’t think I’ll be reading anything else by this author.

Derek Spencer is a billionaire wolf shifter.
He never gets series about anyone he dates.
Kate Hanover is a bodyguard and works for his neighbor, Lexi.
Derek's last girlfriend, a human woman, gave him an ultimatum to marry her or she would break up with him. So they broke up. ( Derek would never marry a human woman anyway only a wolf shifter)
Kate ends up as Derek's date for a celebrity gala, which she thinks may be a bad idea because of her crush on Derek.
Lots of action and fun! Love this author.

Derek needs a last minute date and gets his friends to set him up with Kate. They knew each other and had mutual friends and both were wolf shifters. Their attraction grows, as does the animosity his former girlfriend has. The courtship of Derek and Kate is fast and busy. They fill every minute with adventure. This is a sweet and hopeful paranormal romance. I read this book on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Wolf shifter and billionaire Derek Spencer has avoided the risk of mating the wrong she wolf by dating humans. That could have caused an even bigger problem.

Kate Hanover is an independent wolf shifter. She's a bodyguard and assistant who works for friends of our hero.

A feel good paranormal romance with good characters and a little danger. A very modern and descriptive steamy story .

Terry Spear has written another amazingly entertaining story. I love stories where the damsel isn't always in distress and needing a rescue but can also rescue others at times. Neither of the main characters are superheroes but they are good people you want to root for. I can't wait to read more. Also hoping some billionaire bodyguards meet their matches!

Likeable characters and a decent story. Quite a lot of action. The only thing missing was a motive for the villain to persist in her actions after she was caught the first couple of times. It’s not as if Derek would ever have gone out with her after that, even if his fiancée were out of the picture!

Honestly this was probably one of my lowest rated of the Wolf books by Spear that I have read. There was nothing wrong with it. It was predictable. It was comfortable. There were a few minor surprises along the way, but pretty much all the plot points hit just about where one would expect. I would have liked more drama, suspense, or action. My rating is 3.8/5.

Another entertaining paranormal romance by Terry Spear, fast paced and action packed. I enjoyed the story and rooted for the fleshed out characters.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
