This is the first book in the New Old series, finding Jesus Christ present in the Old Testament -- it seems on every page!
Why in order to create Eve did God send a "deep sleep" on Adam? Why does Genesis tell us Noah was laid out naked and drunk? Why did God send a "deep sleep" upon Abraham, with dark dread in the midst of his sacrifice, when making a Covenant with him? Beginning with these deep sleeps experienced by Adam, Noah, and Abraham, this book finds more than a dozen instances of sleep featured in the Old Testament which each foreshadow the Passion of Jesus Christ.
The various examples highlight different aspects of the Crucifixion, the goods which belong to the Cross. They teach us to expect the Cross in our own life, and to be confident of the graces it contains if we carry it. Inspiring us in our trials, together the Old Testament figures work to give us an invincible faith in God’s Plan for our redemption, as they demonstrate that the Sacrifice of His Beloved Son was foreknown from the beginning.
If you're interested in learning more about scripture...esp the connection between the Old and New Testaments, then I highly recommend Fr Mawdsley's books! This is the first in his series. It was very interesting and had pre-figures from the OT to the New, I never had thought of before. Quite fascinating actually. I look forward to ordering and reading the next book in the series.
Wonderful book for those who love the OT scriptures! It opened up my understanding of so many figures and events that, in a mystical way, reveal Christ throughout, if we have the desire to see. The format is excellent, each chapter is devoted to a particular OT Prophet or figure, which he prefaces with a scripture passage and then expounds on the text, using mostly the Church Fathers' teachings. I think it is unique with the emphasis he places on the strange sleeps of Adam, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, et. al. as prefigures of Christ's death on the cross, and the infinite love God has for all of us is the overarching theme. Very engaging read but my review does not do it justice. Like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, my heart burned within me as I learned so much, and have much to ponder in my heart. Highly recommend it.
Mawdsley has a real knack for uncovering the prefigurations in the Old Testament that gives a much greater insight into the fact that all history leads to the Cross on Calvery. This, like all of his books, leads to greater faith and comfort.
Goodreads doesn't have the audio version of this, so I chose this hard cover to log that I read it. As a protestant, I can't go along with the whole Mary as the co-redemtrix with Christ. She's literally revered as the mother of God; she's both the biological mother of Christ and as the first person saved by Christ on the cross, the bride of Christ. No matter how much Catholics say they don't worship Mary, Roman Catholicism definitely reveres her as God.
Besides that, there's much her that I don't agree with. If you give anyone enough words to speak, there will eventually be a few nuggets of wisdom, and there were here. Mostly though, this is a sterile interpretation and comparison of instances of sleep with death as direct correlations, and that was just too much of a stretch for me. This was like someone who studied scripture and interpreted it with no influence of the Holy Spirit. Very dry and lifeless.
If you've ever heard that the New Testament is prefigured in the Old, but never were completely sure on what that meant, or how to see that, this book gives some great examples. Some will be so clear that once you read them, you will be surprised you never noticed them before. Others will be less clear, yet no less profound. Perhaps even more beneficial, is the citations of Fathers and Doctors of the Church, and their commentaries on the Sacred Scriptures, which will allow you to go further in learning about the Scriptures.
