About the author
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
13.6k books7,295 followersA master of poetry, drama, and the novel, German writer and scientist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe spent 50 years on his two-part dramatic poem
Faust
, published in 1808 and 1832, also conducted scientific research in various fields, notably botany, and held several governmental positions.
George Eliot called him "Germany's greatest man of letters... and the last true polymath to walk the earth." Works span the fields of literature, theology, and humanism.
People laud this magnum opus as one of the peaks of world literature. Other well-known literary works include his numerous poems, the Bildungsroman Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship and the epistolary novel The Sorrows of Young Werther .
With this key figure of German literature, the movement of Weimar classicism in the late 18th and early 19th centuries coincided with Enlightenment, sentimentality (Empfindsamkeit), Sturm und Drang, and Romanticism. The author of the scientific text Theory of Colours , he influenced Darwin with his focus on plant morphology. He also long served as the privy councilor ("Geheimrat") of the duchy of Weimar.
Goethe took great interest in the literatures of England, France, Italy, classical Greece, Persia, and Arabia and originated the concept of Weltliteratur ("world literature"). Despite his major, virtually immeasurable influence on German philosophy especially on the generation of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling, he expressly and decidedly refrained from practicing philosophy in the rarefied sense.
Influence spread across Europe, and for the next century, his works inspired much music, drama, poetry and philosophy. Many persons consider Goethe the most important writer in the German language and one of the most important thinkers in western culture as well. Early in his career, however, he wondered about painting, perhaps his true vocation; late in his life, he expressed the expectation that people ultimately would remember his work in optics.

“I have so much in me, and the feeling for her absorbs it all; I have so much, and without her it all comes to nothing.”
A lot of classic novels contain certain things that make us cringe a little today but The Sorrows of Young Werther is one that, more than most, really hasn't aged well. I do not know if some people consider this tragically romantic, but it is not my idea of romance. Werther is a serious pest and borderline stalker. He needs to let it go.
In this story, Werther falls head over heels for the first pretty girl who wants to dance with him, obsesses over her, and continues to pursue her even after learning of her engagement to another man; even after she openly refuses him. He turns up at her house constantly. He attempts to force kisses upon her. We suffer through accounts of his sex dreams about her. They're not called that, but that's basically what they are.
The book is written as a series of letters to Werther's friend Wilhelm. It's a tiny book, but it feels so much longer because these letters mostly consist of Werther's repetitive internal struggles. Of course he believes he is the only person in the history of the world to feel like he does, and he repeatedly insists that Charlotte - the object of his obsession - secretly loves him, too, despite her protestations.
I can sympathise with the pain and angst of young love, even when it is wrapped up in a flowery, introspective package. I liked Call Me By Your Name after all. However, any sympathy I had for Werther quickly dissipated when he continued to harass both Lotte and her now husband, Albert. I guess this is just an old example of predatory behaviour being excused because of passion, and men's emotions being perceived as more important than the damage they do to the women they're directed at.
It also romanticizes And though the intellectuals smell blood when anyone dares to call a 300-year-old classic "boring", I'm going to have to be philistine and say it: It's also really boring.

This is a dangerous book. For anyone who has suffered from that unrequited love that burns like a fever will be able to relate uncannily well with this book. Unfortunately the ending is such that it inspired many people to use it like a template for their own lives when faced with a similar situation. While finishing up this book I wondered whether Goethe was ever aware or thought about the painful actions his book inspired.
This is a fictionalized autobiography of Goethe's own experience of being in love with a woman he could never have. The experience was obviously very painful for him. His writing style has powerful clarity that can easily pull you into the story causing you to ache with the main character and laugh at the same time. To me this was an example of the dark-side of romanticism. The main character, Werther, was so obsessed and fixated on Charlotta (the woman he loves) that it was as if he wasn't even seeing her anymore. What he was in love with was an idea, not actually her, he was in love with his own ideal of her. This is the grand delusion that romantics feed themselves and they do it to such excess that their behavior seems pitiable. I would only recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand what obsession with another human being looks like. This mindset is as unhealthy as attaining the object, and I say object because that is what the idealized Charlotta became, would likely only reveal his delusion.
Romanticism is an example of looking for a personal messiah in love. Someone who we can pin all of our hopes and dreams on to pull us out of the human condition we find ourselves stuck in. A quest for transcendence through the love of another. But placing that responsibility on the shoulders of someone else will always disappoint and rightly so. We can not give to another what only we can do for ourselves.
I would only cautiously recommend this book. Realists could handle it, but dreamers beware.

I couldn't help but imagine young Werther as a high school, tweeting about all his troubles to the ether. So, without further ado, I present to you: The Tweets of Young Werther.

This is the kind of book that high school teachers should be making self-absorbed teenagers read. They can totally relate, both to the intense feelings of emotion and the complete conviction that no one in the world has ever felt the same way before. I couldn't relate that well, because really Werther just needs to man up and bang someone else, but I still (inexplicably) liked this book. Actually, my affection is explicable: we're talking about Goethe, after all.
I should really step away from photoshop and get back to work.

During the past 3 years I’ve started to read more classic writers that I missed when I was younger. That means most of them because I thought that dead writer= bad writer, with the exception of Russian authors. Some of these authors I was eager to read, some less. Goethe is one of the latter ones, I knew he was important but it did not attract me at all. I decided on The Sorrows of Young Werther as the introduction with the writer because it was short and in prose. The small novel totally exceeded my expectations and I gulped it in almost one go. I was surprised that it was so readable although the subject wasn’t too pleasing, hint the Sorrows from the title, and the epistolary format is not usually exciting.
The subject is not something out of the ordinary, the young artist falls in love with a woman who is promised to another man and his “sorrows” are expressed through letters to his friend. However, I was touched by Werther’s pain, although it was a bit too melodramatic at times, an obsession which cannot end well, as they usually don’t.
I am excited that the first book of the year received maximum grades and I can’t wait to see what more the year brings.

Thackeray wrote this very glib verse synopsis of the tale:
Werther had a love for Charlotte
Such as words could never utter;
Would you know how first he met her?
She was cutting bread and butter.
Charlotte was a married lady,
And a moral man was Werther,
And, for all the wealth of Indies,
Would do nothing for to hurt her.
So he sighed and pined and ogled,
And his passion boiled and bubbled,
Till he blew his silly brains out,
And no more was by it troubled.
Charlotte, having seen his body
Borne before her on a shutter,
Like a well-conducted person,
Went on cutting bread and butter.

“I have so much in me, and the feeling for her absorbs it all; I have so much, and without her it all comes to nothing.”

No doubt there were shimmers of brilliance in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774); however, for such a short book, it took me a long time to complete it. At one level, it's not difficult to relate to Werther and the pain he experiences (he is in love with a woman who is unavailable, i.e. already married). Still, experiencing this pain (and wallowing with Werther in his anguish) is not enough to move the narrative forward.

Θυμάσαι;
Και, Βιλέλμ, αυτόν τον ουρανό, αυτήν την εμπιστοσύνη, αν ποτέ τολμήσω να… Με καταλαβαίνεις. Όχι, η καρδιά μου δεν είναι τόσο διεφθαρμένη! Αλλά αδύνατη, πολύ αδύνατη! Και μήπως αυτό δεν είναι διαφθορά;
Δεν είναι η αγάπη μου γι’ αυτήν η ιερότερη, ή καθαρότερη, ή πιο αδελφική αγάπη;
Ένοιωσα ποτέ κάποια ένοχη επιθυμία στην ψυχή μου;
Θεέ μου! Είμαι ένοχος που ακόμη και τώρα νιώθω ευτυχία καθώς ανακαλώ από τα βάθη της καρδίας μου αυτές τις φλογερές χαρές;

This is such a beautifully written book! I love how thoughtful and philosophical it is.
The way the story is told—through letters and then through “the editor”—is very interesting. Werther is writing to a close friend of his, and because of this the reader gets an intimate glimpse into his honest thoughts and feelings. Once the narrative style changes, the impact of what has happened is even more powerful.
I felt terribly for what Werther was going through, but (at the same time) part of me felt slightly detached from him and his emotional turmoil. To be honest, I can’t put my finger on why exactly I felt/feel this way. I’ve been wondering if it’s because of how dramatically he expressed his feelings, which made him feel more like a caricature than a “real” person.
The ending was heartbreaking and left me feeling (as the title says) very sorrowful.

Here is a book I have wanted to read for a long time, leaving me with mixed feelings.
That's a very German work announcing the beginnings of the Romantic current. We may savor a job when we are teenagers, when we know our first emotions, our early romantic disappointments. It is a classic that I could undoubtedly have seduced when I was 17, but I discovered it far too late. Werther has too many easy tears; this work is too cutesy for my taste. It's a missed appointment; it's a shame that there are beautiful passages, especially the descriptions of nature.

Most beautiful book I've ever read. Goethe's style and prose is incredible. I'm not sure how well it translates to English, having read it in Dutch and German, but I'm sure there are many competant translators out there. Anyone who's not read this is really, really missing out as it's of an unequalled beauty.

"I have been intoxicated more than once, my passions have never been far off insanity."
Although I have some sympathy for unrequited love, it was hard for me to understand Werther. My feelings toward him went back and forth between sympathy and frustration. At times I admired his love, at other times I found it to be very obsessive. Yes, he was sensitive and romantic, but the woman of his dreams did not lead him on in any way so I did find the way he behaved quite incomprehensible.
This was my first Goethe and it won't be my last.I love how he writes, and I enjoyed his philosophical musings, and his meditations on life, love, religion, people, etc. He made some interesting points although some of them did seem to come from an elitist's point of view.

Read
October 18, 2013It’s taken me well over a year to get through the saga of Young Werther’s love for his Lotte even though it’s quite a short little book. I plead mitigating circumstances. I had no thought of reading this novel until I came across a pair of characters called Goethe and Lotte in Christine Brooke-Rose’s Textermination, and checked out their real-life story. The trail led to a fictional version of the same story in Young Werther. I was tempted to try reading Young Werther in his own language so I bought a parallel text and set about deciphering Die Leiden while meanwhile continuing to decipher Brooke-Rose’s prose. I love challenges.
Die Leiden is written mostly in the form of letters from Werther to his friend Wilhelm. The first lines of the first letter had a lovely rhythm and were full of short and recognisable words:
(How glad I am to have come away! Best of friends, what the human heart is like!)
I read a bit further, pleased with my efforts, until I came to a line about two sisters, one of whom Werther seemed to be involved with. Or was he dallying with both at the same time, the young scamp? I was confused and switched to the English version but somehow lost interest in Werther when he then began to dally with Lotte, who was already engaged, excusing himself thus: I treat my heart like a sick child; I let it have anything it wants.
Fast forward to last week and a decision to clear my currently-reading shelf with no further Zaudern und Zagen (shilly-shallying). I picked up Werther again and this time his sorrows somehow suited me better. Before I knew it, I was leafing through his letters, immer geschwinder (faster and faster) like water thundering through a gigantic gorge into a deep dark lake. Werther, like many young people of the 1770s, was awed by the spectacle of nature and continually pondering man’s punyness in relation to the landscape.
When Werther is not being awed by glowing sunsets or wild storms, he is tormented by thoughts of his beloved Lotte who meantime has married her fiancé. When the blue frock-coat and matching yellow waistcoat he was wearing the day he met her are finally worn out, he has another made exactly the same so that he can continue to be reminded of her. He treasures ribbons and trinkets that she has touched and dreams of her constantly.
Such are the sorrows of young Werther.
Goethe had a real Lotte in his life, Charlotte Buff, whom he met in 1772 when he was twenty-three and she was nineteen and already engaged. Apparently her fiancé offered to stand down in favour of Goethe, but G remembered he had an urgent journey to make just about then and Lotte eventually married her fiancé. Goethe may have shared some of Werther’s sorrows over Lotte but he quickly found comfort in the arms of another (married) lady; there were a series of married ladies in his life, it seems.
Lotte went in search of him in Weimar many years later when they were both in their sixties and she a widow. Her journey was not a success. Thomas Mann wrote about this period in their lives in his novel Lotte in Weimar: The Beloved Returns. It might well have been called The Sorrows of Lotte.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

It's definately a masterpiece of its age, but I can't count how many times throughout the book I wanted to shake Werther by the arm or better so, slap him it the face. The characters are just unbelievablly stupid. I know that the times were different, but still they should know better. And the fact that the book caused a lot of people to commit suicide doesn't help at all.
I can't believe Goethe wasted his talent on such a wortless novel.

I am proud of my heart alone, it is the sole source of everything, all our strength, happiness and misery. All the knowledge I possess everyone else can acquire, but my heart is all my own.
If one doesn’t drown oneself in its indulgent water, sorrow can deepen, can humanize and connect a person to humanity. Werther realizes this idea at different levels of self-indulgence, self-destruction and emotional dissipation. He is dreamy, sensitive, emotional, vulnerable, very romantic, made for love, to the cost of dissolution of the self. Such sensitivity in fact renders him extremely vulnerable, weakened by the power of his own emotions, because the world as constituted is not especially kind to the sensitive nature. Such a nature in this sense is not made for the world and has to be somewhat artificially (but nevertheless necessarily) re-trained for adaptation to it. A misfit has to be turned into something of a workable fit. But for Werther, a painful detour towards self destruction comes naturally in the course of living than the simulation of a personality that is not true for him.
Sometimes I don't understand how another can love her, is allowed to love her, since I love her so completely myself, so intensely, so fully, grasp nothing, know nothing, have nothing but her.
Werther’s sentimentality is obsessive and even morbid at times. The grief is intense and so over involving that someone just might need a moment to disconnect from the atmosphere of such melancholic dankness. The prose over spills with painful lovelorn sentiments that ooze from his heart. But then this pain is as real and as acutely felt. Werther with all his vulnerabilities, his idealism, his belief in the utmost goodness of human nature and his disdain for worldly ambition is not really made for this world. He is that sentimental loner who lives in the images of art and literature. He poetizes nature, intersperses it with memories of love, separation, melancholy, nostalgia and transient happiness that speckle the mountains, the stream, the trees, the wind and the snow. Fragments of his being that are scattered all through. Nature stimulates him, mirrors his passions, and embraces the immensity of his grief. It is the only place he truly belongs to. One realizes how hard it must have really been for him. It makes his tale a sorrowful litany of all those hopeless wanderers tormented by their own passionate nature, who want a escape from the grim impassiveness of this world they live in. An ode to all sentimental misfits, hopeless romantics, caged by their passions, incapacitated by their longings, falling apart at the seams of a world which harbors antipathy or at most a polite indifference towards them.

I would not be mistaken if I think that many of us would have just eschewed this book by just seeing the first few words of the title. SORROW: the very word instigates a sense of a confused horror in us. Sorrow is one of the emotions which every great man cannot escape in their lives, as Dostoevsky says. Sorrow brings a state of helplessness from which the unfortunate weak ones cannot free themselves. Though the events of this story can be considered as unfortunate for our Werther, but it can be accepted that Werther is not a weak one, at least not in common sense.
The mere idea of reading letters brings a happy amusement to most of us. But what if those letters brim with sorrow? Through this brilliant epistolary novel, Goethe makes us read the most compelling letters of sorrowful experience of Werther in his young age.
Werther is not the one who despises living or humans; but he is one of those great men who loves the simplicity of the common man; a kind hearted man who weeps for the unfortunate of his fellow men, even for those who are unfamiliar to him. He values everyone equally and respects everyone’s emotions; He even scorns at one’s indifference and apathy. But what befalls him later is something inexorable!
Young Werther falls in love with irresistible Lotte! But Lotte is to be married to Albert, another gentleman with whom Werther makes an in-good-terms friendship. While the marriage between L and A seems to last, the friendship between W and A is enfeebled by the unconventional ideas of Werther.
Love that all he needs and that is widely believed to conquer us and set us free from material contaminations, he felt, is purloined from his lady-love. Stricken with sorrow, he walks endlessly in search of himself, for which Sorrow also alienates individuals from the rest. But wherever he goes, in some way or the other, the memory of his lady-love wakes him up from his somber sojourn. How can the bright figures and brilliant landscapes amuse a prisoner of life?

”So far as I know, Goethe was the first writer or artist to become a Public Celebrity. There had always been poets, painters and composers who were known to and revered by their fellow artists, but the general public, however much it may have admired their works, would not have dreamed of wishing to make their acquaintance. But, during the last twenty years or so of Goethe’s life, a visit to Weimar and an audience with the Great Man was an essential item in the itinerary of any cultivated young man making his Grand Tour of Europe.”
The majority of these young men had only read one book by Goethe, the one he wrote when he was twenty-four. I can only imagine how delightful it would have been for the old boy to meet someone who had read his more mature works and enjoyed them more than they did his passionate, overwrought novella titled The Sorrows of Young Werther. From all accounts, it seems that Goethe was a good sport, indulging and tolerating these young men who were enamored with the wrong book from his oeuvre.
Readers are generally split these days on whether they want to meet those writers who have inspired them. I’ve always been in the camp of meeting them, realizing they are hardly going to match my perceptions of them from reading their books. Paul Theroux is brooding, egotistical, and rude. (I found it a brilliant persona for a book tour.) Peter Mayles is the other end of the spectrum as a charming, congenial, and a highly amusing man. I do believe a few women in the back actually swooned. Most writers fall somewhere in-between. You must understand that writers are just human beings, and as one writer confessed to me at the end of a long tour…”these are not the people I thought were reading my books.”
It was the first time I realized that writers conjure up ideas of their readers just as readers conjure up ideas of who the writer should be. The chance for mutual disappointment is always a possibility. In many ways, the writer, once he/she has given their book over to me, is no longer part of the process. I will make of it what I will, and the writer’s intentions no longer apply. Goethe and his biographers mostly insist this book is not autobiographical. They base this upon the fact that Goethe, in real life, did not fall into the deep abyss that Werther, after much distress, finds himself.
While reading the book, I found myself, during idle speculation times, frequently referring to Werther as Goethe, so it was impossible for me to separate the writer, in this case, from the novella. He would rise up from the gutter of the book like a spectral ghost. Goethe did have a doomed love affair as a young man, which spurred the writing of this book. It must have been cathartic, putting Werther through his paces and experiencing many of the passion driven outcomes that Goethe in real life resisted.
I think the heroine, Lotte, sums up the situation with Werther very well. Or is she speaking to Goethe or is Goethe speaking to himself? ”Oh, why did you have to be born with this violent temper, this uncontrollable clinging passion for everything you touch!”
Werther meets Charlotte when she is already engaged to Albert. Werther falls head over heels in love with her, despite her obligations. She is as intelligent as she is lovely and, in everyone’s assessment, will make a wonderful wife...for Albert. It is so much more convenient when a rival is an odious bore, but Albert is actually someone who Werther can’t help but respect and admire. He treats Werther with respect, despite Werther’s increasingly annoying declarations of love towards his fiancee. Albert is actually very cultured and advanced in his thinking. He seems to understand that Werther is suffering from some form of temporary insanity. He is nearly achieving sainthood by the end of the novel. I would have felt compelled to frog march Werther out of my house and bar him from ever returning long before the plot reaches its inevitable conclusion.
We learn of Werther’s thoughts through letters to his friend Wilhelm. We can tell by Werther’s responses to Wilhelm’s returning letters, which we are not privy to, that his friend is becoming more and more concerned about the state of his friend’s mind.
Albert expresses his concern as well. ”You exaggerate everything, and you are certainly wrong when you compare suicide, which we discuss here, to great actions, since no one can consider it as anything but weakness. For it is certainly easier to die than bravely to bear a life of misery.” What Albert could have went on to say is, as miserable as you are now, you will not be this miserable forever. The clouds darkening your brow will eventually give way to blue skies once again.
Lotte does say with insight tinged by exasperation, ”’Why must it be I, Werther? Just I, who belong to another? Why must that be? I am afraid, very much afraid, that it is only the impossibility of possessing me that attracts you so much.’” Doesn’t that sound like something out of Shakespeare?
As discouraging as Lotte is to the reception of his love, she does also encourage it. She is flattered by his attention. She does like Werther a lot. He is in many ways a better match for her intellectually than Albert, but a much higher risk than the steady Albert. She does wish to have it all. She wants to marry the security of Albert, but still retain Werther as a dear friend to entertain her with his discussions of books, art, travel, and music. This is not dissimilar from a man who wishes to stay married to his wife but would appreciate the stimulation of a dalliance with a young woman. It is like holding a cake in one hand and trying to eat a slice from the other hand while walking a tightrope with certain death below.
As I was reading, I kept asking myself, after pinning the spectre of Goethe between the flyleaf and the front cover, if I would have enjoyed this novella more when I was twenty. Certainly a bit more, but I’ve never really been into overwrought, high strung, nearly hysterical obsessions with love. Still, this book did have a huge impact on young men of the 18th and early 19th century. Maybe it made some of these young men dream about feeling such a passion for a woman, a man, or really anything at all. They were, after all, taking a tour of Europe in search of themselves before settling down to a dreary life of marriage, career, and child rearing. Maybe some of them fell desperately in love with a fiery eyed Italian waitress or with the lovely profile of a Spanish Princess and stoked their passion by reading Werther’s tribulations with the lovely Lotte.
I really hope so.

This is my first introduction to Goethe. Having entertained a desire to read him for this long, I decided to venture into him first with a short work. My feelings about the book are mixed, but Goethe, as an author, made an impression in my heart.
As I mentioned, the book produced mixed feelings in me. Some parts, especially the beginning, I greatly enjoyed. They were beautiful and lively. However, as the story progresses, the tone becomes more melancholy, and from thence, harrowing. The protagonist, young Werther, was the biggest drawback. He was a narcissist. I could neither sympathize nor empathize with him. I felt more for Lotte, the pursued object of his obsession.
The story is about an infatuation that leads to an obsession. Such an attachment can only end in tragedy. This is an age-old tale. There is nothing innovative there. But Goethe's pen has done wonders with this common theme. He writes beautifully and emotionally. Being semi-autobiographical, Goethe does his job well. However, the emotions bounced over me because of my dislike for the protagonist. Goethe's writing is the plus point here. It is the reason for my continued reading. The book would have suffered more in its rating if not for the attraction Goethe's writing had on me.
Overall, I cannot say I enjoyed the story. But as an introduction to Goethe, the book was quite satisfactory.
