Terri Blackstock is a New York Times best-seller, with over seven million books sold worldwide.. She has had over thirty years of success as a novelist.
Terri spent the first twelve years of her life traveling in a U.S. Air Force family. She lived in nine states and attended the first four years of school in The Netherlands. Because she was a perpetual “new kid,” her imagination became her closest friend. That, she believes, was the biggest factor in her becoming a novelist. She sold her first novel at the age of twenty-five, and has had a successful career ever since.
In 1994 Terri was writing romance novels under two pseudonyms for publishers such as HarperCollins, Harlequin, Dell and Silhouette, when a spiritual awakening prompted her to switch gears. At the time, she was reading more suspense than romance, and felt drawn to write thrillers about ordinary people in grave danger. Her newly awakened faith wove its way into the tapestry of her suspense novels, offering hope instead of despair. Her goal is to entertain with page-turning plots, while challenging her readers to think and grow. She hopes to remind them that they’re valued by God and that their trials have a purpose.
Downfall was a fantastic conclusion to this series. Everything wrapped up satisfactory and this was my favorite book of the series. I feel like this is a series where it got better with each book.
I finished the Intervention series and I so enjoyed it. Yes its hard to believe everything that happen to that family, but I still enjoyed it just the same. Someone if after Emily and her family. As soon as Emily finds out there was a murder committed she tries to stop it. Soon she is accused of the murder. But who did it? Again this book in this series focuses on drug abuse and the effects it has years after recovery. Emily family believes she is using again while all of this is going on eventhough she isn't. After you get clean from drugs and alcohol it takes years for people to believe in you. Substance abuse can effect a family years after the person gets clean. I got so much out of this series. Not only is it thrilling it teaches you the what happens when you can get hooked on drugs. I highly recommend this series. Terri Blackstock writing is excellent again and there is so much we all can learn of this insightful series.
The Covington Family can’t seem to catch a break from the bad guys!
In Downfall the Covington’s have moved to Atlanta so that Barbara and Kent can be near each other to explore their feelings for each other. Barbara also was hoping that getting away from their old home would help Emily in her recovery. Unfortunately trouble seems to follow this family wherever they go.
First a bomb is planted under Emily’s car. On the same day a woman is murdered whom Emily knows. Putting the pieces together Emily realizes that a conversation she overheard at work may be unfolding. In a race to save another woman’s life Emily inadvertently sets herself up as a prime suspect in the murders.
In the meantime, Lance is having trouble at school. He isn’t fitting in. Nobody believes that he was a hero in his old hometown. They all make fun of him except for one girl. Alice has troubles of her own with her parents getting ready to divorce. When Alice starts to hang around a known drug dealer Lance once again tries to step in and save a girl’s life.
With the killer’s acts escalating it is becoming clear that he is determined to ruin the Covington’s lives. What is the connection? Will they be able to stop him before his next target is one of them?
Okay, first off does anyone in this family listen when they are told not to do something? Kent tells Emily to wait for him, does she? NO! Lance is told to stay put, does he? NO! Barbara runs around screeching at everyone to do something instead of allowing the police to do their job and then Kent has to come in and clean up everyone’s mistakes for not listening and doing what they were told. BUT, all of that being said I still LOVED this novel! The suspense is excellent! Even though the behavior of the characters annoyed me sometimes I totally could relate with some of them. If one of my children were thrown in jail I too would be the hysterical mother screeching at someone to do SOMETHING! And what kid is going to stay put when you tell them too when they think they can solve the problem with no harm to themselves? All of them getting into these scrapes adds up to the intensity of the suspense in the novel and keeps the reader turning the pages late into the night. I believe this is the last of the Intervention series. I hope so for the sake of the Covington family as I don’t think they could take any more drama in their lives!
I inhaled this book in one gulp. Seriously, I started reading and then it was over and I have no idea where the time went. Impossible to put down. Blackstock has the amazing ability to draw a reader in and hold her hostage until the very last page.
Love the Covington family. This is book three in the Intervention series. You don't need to have read Intervention or Vicious Cycle first, but you'll grasp the family dynamics and mom's love interest, Kent, better if you have.
Sinister suspense brings danger spiraling out of control for all the Covingtons. A desperate kind of read that won't let you go until the breath-taking conclusion.
This was a really good conclusion to the ending of this trilogy. I wish I would have read the last two more timely with the first.
Emily has a hard fought one-year in rehab and one year sober. The hits just keep coming for her as associated people are hurt or killed. Her brother Lance just wants to get on with life in their new city and make friends. Mom Barbara has moved them closer to being by her boyfriend cop Kent Harlan in this installment.
Blackstock pushes you to the limit in decisions and emotions of these characters.
Good narration in audiobook. However, I have no idea what the cover of this version has to do with the story.
This is my first jaunt into the Intervention Series, and I have to say I'm impressed.
Normally a book like this would have me tearing my hair out over being 'told' not 'shown', the convoluted, sometimes silly, and too convenient plot, and the absolute sap drenching the feel-good moments.
But, I actually found myself enjoying Downfall, there was good balance between thriller and personal plot-lines, and the prose, while basic was earnest and easy to read.
Sure, my mind wasn't blown away, nonetheless I don't regret the afternoons spent devouring this book.
I did not know this was a christian book when I picked it up, and I probably wouldn't have read it if I did know. The story was really good and suspenseful for a good portion of the book. I was really into it and really wanted to know who the killer was (which was an interesting twist). However, the christian stuff in the book was too much for me and I think detracted from the main story. There were a couple of times where I almost didn't even finish it because the christian details were just too much, in my opinion. So, for me and my tastes, this book ended up being ok.
I devoured this book and couldn't put it down. After getting to know these characters from books one and two, I was hopeful that with their move to another city, life would calm down a bit, but that's not the case. Emily is being targeted, and Lance is struggling to find friends at the new school. I enjoyed getting the pov of the villain and trying to guess who they were. I was hooked and needed to know how the villain would be stopped. Again, Lance was my favorite character in the book. He was always looking out for others and determined to do what he could to help. My only criticism would be is Emily and Lance were both a bit impulsive and should have talked to Kent or Barbara before acting a couple times but they were better at it in this book than in the previous two and they are still young. It was wonderful to see the change and growth of Emily throughout the series. I am pleased with the way the series wrapped up for the Covington family.
I am always amazed by Christian authors who can write such unbelievable, action-packed mystery books that really draw the reader in and keep him/her on the edge of his/her seat. And Terri Blackstock is indeed one of those authors. Once I seriously began reading, I almost could not put it down.
Drugs and alcohol have been a part of our family, but I am basically unfamiliar with this world. The author herself writes from her own experience, and it makes all the difference. I can sense her heart, and she truly gives you a glimpse into this horrific world while telling a nail-biting murder mystery and even peppering it with a love story that will bring tears to your eyes.
Terri Blackstock is one of the most readable Christian authors out there, in my most humble opinion. Every word and every detail serves a purpose. There was not a character that came across as two-dimensional. There is no doubt that each of these characters seemed to be truly living and breathing.
The Christian message of the book touched my heart so deeply. Even in the midst of pain and suffering that makes no sense, God is there. We may never understand why He has chosen to allow it, but we must not lose our faith or assume that He does not care.
I would recommend this dynamic book to anyone who enjoys Christian fiction and even to those who have walked the drug addict lifestyle or who had a loved one who did (or who is currently). You will not regret this book, and it may go on to provide you with that needed hope.
I was provided with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated in any way, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
Let me start off by saying I loved how the story ended. That's not always the case, but here it was perfect. Though chock full of murder and intrigue, this story had a lot of things going for it. The romance was heart-warming and believable. I was routing for the couple to endure and come out stronger in the end. There were a number of dynamic characters that I remembered from the prior book and I was glad to see them return for the last installment of the series. Their struggles were believable and I found myself rooting for them every step of the way. Mayhem was happening all around, so it made sense to me that stress would abound in their lives. At the same time what a great way for the characters to grow in their faith. This was well done and didn't seem sappy to me. Great job there.
In regards to the suspense aspect of this novel, I read it from start to finish in less than 24 hours. I don't do that very often, but the author had me riveted to my seat, literally. I loved how the plot wasn't predictable and how the investigation took a number of twists and turns. The bad guy was a true nutcase and that reason alone made him a threat in my mind. I liked not knowing who it was until the end. But the cool thing is that I also bought the ending. I could see how it made sense. I've read other books where I've said at the end, "What? No way!" But for this story the author built up enough of a tie in to the crime to make sense so I didn't doubt the validity of the killer's identity when it was revealed.
As this book is about a recovering addict, I think we needed to hear more of the main characters history. It was hard to relate for most of the book. Too bad. The main plot is actually interesting. Had potential but kinda fell flat. It did perk up at the end. The author’s note explained her reason for addressing addiction. That might be good as a preface. ? I’d give one of her other books a go.
Book 3 of her Intervention series, Downfall shows Emily when she thinks she's over her addiction to a prescription drug being tempted all over again. She narrowly escapes a car bomb. Her past connects her to people still struggling with addiction and puts her in danger when two people turn up dead. She becomes a suspect and learns the need to live with integrity even in unfair circumstances.
This book was really suspenseful, especially in the second half of the book. I enjoyed finishing the story from Book 1 and 2 in this series and appreciated a strong Christian message.
this is an absolutely wonderful trilogy. You definitely will be entertained, and also shocked and surprised, by some of the things in this trilogy. in the third book, Emily and Lance are still getting into a great deal of unexpected trouble. Lives are on the line, lives will be changed forever!
Downfall is the third book in the Intervention Series, and sees the return of the Covington family. Emily Covington has worked hard to achieve two years of sobriety from her drug addictions that so damaged her family, while her mom has obtained a new job and her brother Lance is trying to survive highschool. The progress and healing the family has experienced is cast into doubt when a home-made bomb is attached to Emily's car and a woman is murdered. The cascade of events that follows thrusts Emily into suspicion from her family that she's again using, while a shocking turn leads the police to focus on Emily as a suspect.
Blackstock continues to amaze me with her ability to churn out high-octane suspense novels. I greatly enjoyed Downfall and, though I'd only set out to read a few chapters before bedtime, I found I couldn't put the book down and read into the wee hours of the night until I'd reached the excellent conclusion. I enjoyed revisiting the Covington family, and my heart broke as Emily's innocent actions led her into a web of consequences that had me biting my nails. Blackstock did an excellent job of building tension, and the plot was tightly woven. I especially loved the brother-sister relationship between Emily and Lance, and Lance's courage and his decision to stand up for his sister through all 3 Intervention novels makes him special indeed. Addiction has heart-breaking effects on families, and Downfall and the entire series has really brought that to light while providing a thoroughly entertaining ride.
I highly recommend Downfall and award it 5 out of 5 stars, and if you haven't had a chance to read the first two books in the series, please do - you won't be disappointed!

I’ve been following the Intervention Series since it came out. Downfall is the third and last book in the series and what an ending to the series. I loved it. This series shows and tells us how drug use really causes so much harm and how things escalate out of control. No one who takes that first drug ever thinks they will be a drug addict. It just leads to more and more bad decisions. All of Terri Blackstock’s books are fantastic and Downfall is also. The same compelling characters as the first two books with more sinister villains that will capture you right from the start. Emily Covington is a young lady who has been a drug addict, but is now clean and has been that way for two years. She is trying to get her life back on track, but things keep happening and people start to doubt that she is recovered. Even the people closest to her have their doubts, but Emily keeps on. I love action-packed stories and Downfall was exactly that and much more. The last ten chapters or so was fast-paced and breathtaking. I also liked the continuing romance between Emily’s mom Barbara and a police detective Kent. It is really sweet and they have their problems, but I really think it is charming. You will greatly enjoy Downfall and hear the concluding story of the Covington’s and how they put their faith and trust in the Lord. Highly recommended for everyone. A keeper for sure.

Emily has come through a long fight to overcome her drug addiction, but she has successfully navigated her abstinence for two years. Barbara, her mother, stood by and suffered with her during the worst and Emily is having trouble earning her trust. Barbara believes the nightmare begins anew every time Emily stays out late or does something she did during her years of addiction. Emily attends college now and enjoys her new addiction-free friends—who stay out late.
When Barbara comes to Atlanta to be near Kent, it brings them back to the place of Emily’s addiction, and to an old enemy she didn’t know she had. The “Avenger” decides he will kill her and her family. He plants a bomb under her car. From that moment, the bodies fall as he gets nearer to her family. Drugged beyond reason, he enjoys the game.
I had a revelation during the reading of this book. I didn’t realize that ex-addicts can never again take a narcotic, even to help terrible pain. The addict must always feel every bit of pain he or she becomes victim to—or succumb to painkillers and begin the foggy, insane years again.
The action is constant, characters believable, and the suspense continuous. Anyone who reads this book should start with the first book. Though the mystery begins and ends in this book, I felt like someone who goes to a party and walks into someone else’s conversation in the middle. The author often refers to happenings in earlier books. If the first books move at the pace of this one, Emily should be agoraphobic as well as addictive. I certainly wouldn’t leave my house—though for her, home offers no safety.
Terri Blackstock is such a gifted writer. I love everything she writes including “Downfall.” I appreciate that Terri deals with tough issues that people deal with everyday, and always finds a workable solution, including trusting the Lord with their lives and letting Him work in and through them.
Emily Covington wants to prove herself to everyone, assuring them that her life with drugs is over. But when things start happening to her, and since it looks like someone wants her dead, her family still had doubts about Emily’s past life.
In “Downfall,’ Terri Blackstock writes another suspense/ thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seats until the very last word. When I put the book down, all I could think about was what was gonna happen, so I would pick it back up. From the people we loved to the villains we could do without, the character were so real and true to life it was like reading something in the newspaper. And with an intriguing plot that had the many twist and turns, it was difficult to solve the mystery until it was all revealed in the end.
If you’ve never read a Terri Blackstock book, you are missing a real treat. And for those fans who always come back for more of her stories, you will love the words penned in Terri’s new book, “Downfall.”
This book was provided by Zondervan Publishers through The Suspense Zone. I appreciate Susan and all of the work she does to promote Edgy Christian Fiction and thrillers like “Downfall.” I was not expected or required to write a positive review. The opinions in this review are mine only.
A good romance with a God centered character who wants to reform her ways and become someone that she and others can rely on. I will be reviewing this title on my blog in the next few weeks and copy the full review here at that time.
This is a fast paced murder mystery that starts with a bang. Poor Emily and her family are caught in the middle of something they have no idea about. Past experiences shade the way the family response to Emily and this crisis. In life we all shade our experience from what we know about the person or events. It’s hard to give someone a second chance, I mean a real second chance with no prejudice or shading of any kind. Most of us learn from our mistakes and expect that from those around us. The saying ‘Slap me once shame on you…slap me twice shame on me.’ I think that is why seeing someone as a new person after poor past choice is difficult.
This book is well written and fast paced. I read it in a few hours while home one day sick. I enjoyed the characters and even the idea of having to let your child go, if necessary. The religious aspect of the book was on repentance and becoming a better ‘New’ person. The book is not preachy or overly religious in any way. We all face challenges and the challenge of a child abusing drugs is huge….I think most mystery fans would love this book. Give it a try….this author can weave a good yarn.
I was captivated by Intervention and Vicious Cycle, so I jumped at the chance to review this final book in the series. In a word: Wow! Terri Blackstock once again kept me riveted to the page into the wee hours. She has seamlessly showed the perspective of the story from various angles: Emily's struggles, her mother's roller coaster of emotions, Lance's experiences, and Homicide Detective Kent Harlan's professional and personal commitment. She even pulls back the killer's mask just enough to allow a glimpse into his/her mind without revealing who it is until the proper time. This is a chilling picture of the consequences of drug addiction and the seemingly harmless ways that it often begins. Terri's experiences that led to the writing of this series give this novel a raw authenticity that can't be attained by mere research, and I often forgot I was reading fiction. I didn't just read this book; I experienced it. Although aimed for adults, this should be required reading for older teens. My girl is eagerly waiting for me to pass this book along to her as soon as my review is written!
I received this book free from Zondervan and Shelton Interactive as part of their Blogger Review program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
Downfall is another painfully true story of how one person’s addiction can affect so many people around them. Blackstock’s writing talent continues Emily’s story in a remarkably entertaining way. Readers will finally learn what it takes for an addict to turn her life around. Emily has a strong family support system to help her along the way; that, along with her Faith in God will ultimately help her wing the fight to get her life back.
I loved Downfall, along with all the books in the trilogy. I strongly recommend all Terri Blackstone’s books. They’re all 5 star book for me.
As in the first book of this series I find Barbara extremely unlikeable. Also extremely idiotic. The character is way over the top. I don’t know how readers are supposed to believe Kent could be attracted to someone who is constantly throwing fits and has absolutely no common sense whatsoever. It was hard to make myself finish it but I skimmed through quickly just so I could be done with it.
Another powerful novel in the Intervention series. It was good to catch up with the Covingtons again. Blackstock adeptly shows what the life of an addict (even recovering addicts) can be like. She shows hope and cautions in the same novel. Fans will be pleased.
The book starts out fast and finishes even faster. A real wild ride in the lives of addicts and former people with abuse problems. Great twists as everyone remains one step behind a diabolical killer.
