Girl code is clear: you don’t date the guy your best friend is interested in. Not a problem. Mr. Tall, Blond, and Stunning won’t tempt her away from her perfectly planned senior year—or the boy she’s been secretly crushing on, well, since kindergarten.

Moving from New York City to Dryden Bay, California isn’t exactly the senior year Kai Evans has in mind—until he meets the girl next door with the unforgettable blue eyes. Kate has no trouble rejecting him. There isn’t anything he wouldn’t do to make her smile. But that smile isn’t meant for him, and her best friend keeps getting in the way.

She says no and then runs into him at her catering job for a party. Kai has just moved from NY for his last year of high school and fell instantly in love with Kate. Little do they know that he is Kate's new next door neighbor. The problem between them getting together is Halston, Kates best friend who falls head over heels in love and calls dibs on him. This is fine with Kate bc she has a crush on Halstons brother ford. So Kai, who's over manipulative father wants him to play in a charity tennis match, makes Kate a deal. He will help her get ford if she does the tennis tournament with her. They start to fall for each other over the course of tennis practices with one problem. Halston is always there. Then at the tournament which Kai and Kate end up winning it but get in a huge argument that's ends up in Kate accusing Kai of not being able to stay with one girl. She says this bc she misenterpreted seeing Kai with girls. Then they make up and over Thanksgiving break while Halston is in Costa Rica and kais whole family is in Hawaii he basically stays at her house and they get very close. He asks her to homecoming and she rejects him bc Halston. Then she gets a sweaty date to hoco and has a dance with Kai. Before hoco Kai told Kate to come clean to ford and she does and he said he loves her but they can't be together bc Halston. After this Kate and Kai become official and they kiss right as Halston walks in. Halston gets really mad and rages and then cold shoulders them. But then they make up, Halston gets better, Kai's abusive parents split, and they all live happily ever after 💗

Long story short cute romance, read it

That was lowkey the longest review I've ever written. Hope you enjoy!

Adorable!!!! Loved Kai and his lovesick thinking— he’s adorable. Kate I like less so, but I mean I get where she’s coming from. Don’t really wanna read the next book tho, because it’s from her bestie’s POV (Who has a odd— No offense to the people who have her name — name, I can’t even remember it, but she has the mental age of… hm. A 11 or 12 year old for a good percent of the book. I don’t need to look further into her stupidity, thank you. All in all, cute and fluffy book. Love love and love again!!

The new player neighbor next door just moved in, and Kate’s best friend Halston calls dibs on him. Nursing a longtime crush on Halston’s twin brother, Kate agrees to play tennis with Kai all for the sake of charity with dating pointers in return. The more time Kai and Kate spend together though, their friendship, their chemistry could not be any more perfect. But what about girl code? And wasn’t Kai a player?

This less than 300 page KU book was what I was totally in the mood for! Sweet, fast-paced YA romance with the opposites attract x friends to lovers tropes. I loved Kai and Kate together and I thought more was going to happen along the lines with Kate’s crush on Ford, but also content that there wasn’t as much drama with that. The added details about Kate’s and Kai’s families really added more to their characters. Overall enjoyed and I look forward to reading the second book about Halston soon!

That literally makes me so sad/mad I cannot
Halston kind of ruined all Kate’s love life at some point then, didn’t she? Mm mm mm *shakes head*

”Nothing bothered me more than Kate Parker ignoring me.”

”Turning, he buried his head in my shoulder as he pulled me in close. 'You came.' The disbelief in his voice tore at my heart. 'Yeah.' I held him as tightly as I knew how. 'I got you, Kai.'”

”Kai, on the other hand, kissed the same way he loved. Slowly at first, surprisingly sure, and then indelibly.”

Allow Yourself to be Pursued by the Hot New Guy Next Door, OR Be a Supportive Best Friend?

Sometimes in life, you just have a need for a cute, simple, well written, book about two crazy seventeen year olds finding their way around first love.

Randi Rigby has managed to write the sweetest YA novel here

Not SICKENLY sweet, but perceptive, funny, sweet.

This story involves our two leads:

Kate and Kai

There first meeting is less than auspices, when Kate was having a particular traumatising day behind the help desk at the Dryden Bay Resort.

This is where she crosses paths with the incredibly hot Kai while she is in the middle of a mild breakdown dealing with a troublesome customer.

She has him pegged as a player from the get go, as he has a stunning leggy blonde draped all over him

When he arrives, with three friends, much later, and asks her on a date, she promptly turns him down.

Her decision seems justified, as she witnesses him having to hand out money to his pals…

CLEARLY a bet had been made.

Imagine her surprise much later, when she discovers the Evan’s family, Mrs and Mrs, Kai and his fifteen year old brother, Jessie, MOVE IN NEXT DOOR!!!

As Katie observes this momentous occasion with her bestie Halston,
Halston quickly calls dibs on the absolutely GORGEOUS Kai.

Things get even messier when Kate finds out Kai will be attending, not the posh private school, close by, Kingston, ..BUT her school Dryden High.

Before the school year has began, Kai set out to win Kate over…

Slight problem!

The girl code.

Halston had called Dibs and Kate uphold those conditions, and WILL NOT, under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES pay attention to any of Kai charms.

ANYWAY!

She has other fish to fry in her personal life, her own pursuit of Ford.

Ford.

The hot guy she has known, and watched grown up since elementary school.

Her OTHER best friend.
AND!
Halston s TWIN brother.

So.
As Kai chases Kate, Kate chases Ford
( on the quiet. She doesn’t want Halston finding out )

And, Halston chases Kai.

This was absolutely a fun read.

The repartee between Kate and Kai had me laughing.

And Kates completely supportive relationship with Halston’s loud, out there behaviour was a delight to read.

With two more books in this series, I know where to look in the future to have my spirits lifted .

I'm trying to remember why I only rated this 2 stars and I'm having a hard time even remembering what I read. That should tell you something. LOL First and foremost, Halston was annoying af. She is a terrible, terrible best friend. I think Kate made a comment that Halston singlehandedly got her through middle school or something...I mean, what? Because Kate had braces and glasses and a terrible haircut? Join the club...that was the experience for most people. I read another review that said nothing about Kai really stood out as a male lead and I kinda have to agree. I don't know...on the whole it was all just very meh and rudimentary. Others have done something similar and better executed.

That ending was very abrupt? And no epilogue??? Anyway I loved Kai. We share the same birthday so I’m biased lol. Halston was annoying tbh. She wasn’t a bad friend but it was so obvious Kai liked Kate. From the beginning he was transfixed on her. Kate definitely should have told her how she felt although realistically I don’t think it would have gone over any better. In the end she was supportive at least. Overall it was cute and it made me laugh. I wish we got a bit more but maybe there’s a future book.

Favorite lines:

Why had I chased a summer job that clearly required customer service skills when I was allergic to annoying people?

The backbone of surprise Is fusing speed with secrecy.

“I guess when you’re stuck in that dark space, you start to wonder if there’s a way out. Or even what out looks like.”

“Ever have your heart broken?” “Many times.” He shrugged. “I’m Italian. We go all in.” “How did you get over it?” “I fell in love again.” “Just like that?” “Just like that.” Gabe smiled. It was the smile of a man who had done and seen a lot. “There are always more fish in the sea, Kai.” “Are there?”

Life shrinks or expands in proportion To one’s courage.

“But just so you know, if you want someone to yell at, cuss at, or throw things at. I’ll be that guy.”

he was open to all who amused, uplifted, or made him think.

Kai, on the other hand, kissed the same way he loved. Slowly at first, surprisingly sure, and then indelibly.

Filled with typical high school drama and hijinx, this author will have you feeling everything from the emotions of changing schools your senior year, to a tangled love triangle, to a best friend's brother romance, and so much more. I loved the little quotes at the beginning of Kate's chapters.

When Kate's best friend Halston calls dibs on the new guy that moved in next door it didn't really matter since Kate has had her eyes on someone else for years. But how does a girl tell her best friend that her secret crush is her best friend's brother? Will Kate lose her best friend if she comes clean?

Kai just moved from New York to Dryden Bay just as he's starting his senior year of high school and meeting Kate is proving the move may not be so bad after all. But Kai makes a mistake that Kate won't forgive so he finds himself placed firmly in the barely-a-friend zone. So Kai sets out to help Kate snag the guy of her dreams, while trying to ward off the advances of Kate's kooky best friend.

I received an ARC and voluntarily offer this review.

I really enjoyed this book actually. I wasn’t sure going into it because I don’t know anyone who has read it.. but it’s actually really good. It follows more of a cutesy high school drama thing (but I feel like Senior Year is too old for how they kinda act in this book). If you like cute (ZERO SPICE), butterflies in your stomach book then pick this up.

I really liked Kai and Kate tbh. They were really cute together, I found her best friend really annoying at times, like acting 100% not her age, but like whatever I guess. She called “dibs” on him.. and she’s a senior in high school. It kinda just screamed immature I guess. I feel like Kai was such a fine character LMAO and Kate was such an overachiever type of character that it mended well. It was obviously that Kai had a thing for her throughout the book so I have no clue why Kate’s best friend wouldn’t just back the hell off yk?

Anyways.. I really enjoyed this book and read it under 5 hrs in one sitting :)

overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 (it’s cute but not memorable)

Boy meets girl. Boy likes girl. Girl's best friend calls dibs. Girl falls for boy but hides it. Boy pursues girl. And it's so good.

Truthfully this book could've gone through another round of edits but that didn't take away from the story for me. (I almost always notice typos and plot holes but since I'm really in it for the HEA, it doesn't often bug me that much)
But if you like YA, no language, no explicit content but enough chemistry to give you butterflies, I would highly recommend this book.

good book

I really liked this book, only thing is they all had only like one main flaw in each character. Also so many people where hating on Halston and idk why she had no idea about Kate and her brother and they made their own opinions on how she would react. Kate told her she liked the guy she was obsessed with while Kate repeatedly said nothing was happening between them, I would be mad too. Anyways good book you should read it.

I really liked this (so much so that I read the whole series)! I thought it was so cute and they all deserved to find the love that they got. (Not saying names due to spoilers and stuff). Haleston is an amazing character that I feel when can all try to relate to. I totally recommend this book for ages 12+ (there is some elements that might not be great for younger readers)
I hope you enjoy this (if you haven't read it yet) and stay hydrated!

Great emotion

This is not your typical teen romantic comedy, and I mean that in the best way. All the great things about a good clean romance are present, but so is a depth of emotion and connection that moves this book to a solid place on my favorites list. I loved living the romance with Kate and Kai, but I reveled in the character development even more. Highly recommended!

Cute, I liked Kate although I think she did do Halston dirty with the longevity of the secret and we brushed over it so quickly. Don't get me wrong, Halston was still annoying af and idk if I'd be able to stomach her own book. Kai was alright as a love interest, I'd be lying if I said I understood what made him stand out from other male characters tho. Overall no major qualms, an enjoyable read~

I FLEW through this book oh my gosh it was GLORIOUS!!!! It annoyed me at some parts with the best friend but i also understood, if we take away the bratty best friend then this book is for sure a 5 star read, with the best friend 4.5 stars. I loved how their relationship formed because it was almost an enemies to lovers and a best friends to lovers at the same time. Kai is maybe the sweetest man ever oh my gosh there was not one minute where i was mad at him or annoyed by him. He is the definition of an all around 10/10

This book follows a really cute concept, but the execution is disappointing. My main frustration was the timeline. The plot seemed to skip forward without much rhyme or reason, and it made it difficult to follow. It felt like there were a lot of holes that needed to be filled in, and the ending was beyond disappointing. Overall, it was a cute book, but it left much to be desired.

I was expecting a lot better… like it wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t perfect. I found it a bit cringey, like Kate was all like ‘I don’t like kai’ and blah blah but she ends up deeply falling for him. Kai seemed to like her as he laid his eyes on her and constantly found a way to insert himself wherever she was. It was a bit of a mess but as I said not terrible not perfect.

the book was so good. there was never a moment when I didn’t want to read it. when reading, hours felt like minutes. the book was really good. the main event could have been developed a little more, I don’t know if it will get more developed in other books in the series. I loved how the author had multiple point of views. overall 4.25 star book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was a fun book. I like the FMC more than the MMC. Yes, you felt bad for him because of the crappy situation with his father, but the whole being rich thing is a bit of a turnoff, especially in this context. He's never had to work, while she works two (sometimes three) jobs. Girls melt at his feet. I wished he'd have the opportunity to develop some character and work ethic.

The premise was cute but I felt the conflict wasn't strong enough. I found myself being annoyed with the main character often. It's a slow burn and I took longer reader this one because there wasn't that much excitement in my opinion. Like the dual pov and that's about it.

It was good. The relationship was built beautifully. You could see the lines from tension, to friendship, to lovers fade perfectly. I understand why the side characters were there, though I didn’t really like her best friend. She was kind of overbearing and selfish in my personal opinion.

This book had some cute moments but Halston really annoyed me. It's like take a hint lady!

I thought that the ending was a bit rushed and the Ford drama wasn't dealt with well.

Easy read though and I enjoyed the dual POV.

Could have been longer though.

I thought this book was really fun and sweet. I think it was very authentic to the girlhood experience in high school which helped me not be too annoyed when Kate and Kai still weren't together 80% in. I also appreciated that the drama with Halston didn't last as long as it could have.

It was easy to read and clean but Halston was crazy annoying and didn’t stop even when Kai wasn’t interested.
All the moments between Kai and Kate were cute.
Not sure what happened with her jobs and tennis career in the end. Those were so prominent in the beginning maybe it was summer jobs etc
