For years, it’s been him and his robot Dog against the universe, hunting down wanted fugitives for the bounty on their heads.
But things have changed. He’s working undercover for the Marshals Service, and he has a new partner, both in work and in life: Commander Allie Miller of Union Naval Intelligence. Working together, they continue the hunt for Nautilus, the mysterious criminal entity trying to bring down the Union.
But when Grant and Dog try to help Allie take down a weapons deal Nautilus is trying to broker with terrorists bitter over defeat in a long and bloody war, will Grant’s love for Allie become his greatest weakness?

He has written over 70 books in over a dozen different series, and his short stories have been included in many different anthologies.
He currently lives in norther Wyoming with his wife and their dog. Besides writing and reading science fiction and fantasy, he enjoys outdoor photography, hiking and camping.
The book isn’t bad, but I don’t particularly like stories that are based on things continually going wrong. In the previous book I remember thinking, the main character was a bit of a disappointment as he wasn’t really that good at anything, and this was also the pattern in this book. Every plan always seems to go wrong, usually because it wasn’t well thought through e.g.
There are also lots of little irritating things such as, he recognise the ‘baddies’ are wearing body armour, but he still shoots them in the chest, and seems surprised when they shoot back instead of dropping dead. Unfortunately he makes this mistake more than once. As with the other books in this series there is a lot of action, although as the story progresses it becomes more frantic and chaotic.
Even with its problems I might have given three stars, but the ending was annoying, so I have gone with my initial instincts of two.
Solid middle novel - being number three of four books in the series. Advances the overarching plot, so not really a stand-alone. You'll need to start with book 1, Absolution, which sets the stage for a larger conspiracy - and works great as a one and done if you don't want to go the distance.
But why wouldn't you? Partlow offers up an exciting space opera 'bounty hunter chases the bad guys' adventure where his hero and robot dog sidekick get into all sorts of trouble. This is pulp action with great characters, expansive universe, AI run amok themes, military sci-fi elements, and strong storytelling. Recommended. Now I'm off to read the final installment.
I enjoyed this book very much. I love grant dog, Allie and Jace the new character. There was plenty of action Snark and a lot of humor. Got a love dog. The only flaw I found in this book is a cliffhanger. Don’t like cliffhangers books should be self-contained, if the book and series is that good we’re going to read the next one anyway. If you can get past the cliffhanger read this book but first start from book one of the series is well worth it.
As Grant Masterson and dog follow the clues that would clear his name of the deeds that he's been framed in. He finds that he's actually digging himself deeper into the conspiracy against him. He finds evidence and before he gets a chance to exonerate himself from the whole affair... he finds that it's been tainted and released to the public in such a way to make everything seem so much worse. So yeah, grab addictive series.
Rick Partlow’s stories have yet to disappoint me. The stories in the series flow naturally and the only complaint I have is the sudden screeching end that slap the reader in the face, as one is to engrossed in the story to be aware there might be an ending. An author worth reading.
Although I can see the possible problem with AI, I still live with the three robotic laws in mind. The author quite rightly has both sides of it in his story of a bounty hunter. If one is a mutt, then it only means that it is highly mobile as well. I liked this book, I have liked the previous ones as well.
This installment was much more brutal than the previous ones. Things get pretty ugly early on and don't really slow down much. As the story gets more intense, we get more insights into the main characters and all in all, it makes for a fantastic ride.
This book started out a little “slow”, but hang onto something! I throughly enjoyed the action and character build in this exciting book. Think Mission Impossible meets Jack Reacher and Star Wars. You’re in for a ride!
Grant and Dog continue to look for evidence against Nautilus and the Oracle. Assisted by Allie and a new apprentice, reluctantly taken on, they look to take down a terrorist organisation. When Allie is taken prisoner, how far will Grant go to get her back!
I wasn't completely sold on this series to begin with, and honestly continued primarily for Dog's entertaining snark but this book got me completely hooked into the series! I'm off to read the next one before I die of curiosity!
Grant Masterson only thought he was busy when all he was doing was chasing after bad people for the bounty. Then Alie & Grant run into major trouble when they set out to interdict an illegal weapons operation. Then his life became more complicated.
I like how this series is playing out, but it is still exhausting to go from one incident to the next so frequently. These folks don't even get a chance to sleep! But I still like the story, the comraderie, the romance and the action. On to the next book!
Third part of the four part series. Space Opera at it's best. Great story of the bounty hunter and his robot dog. Easy story, well written with none of the hyper science and easy characters that you can relate to.
2.5? A bit less engaged than with prior ones in this series. But again just kinda reading these as relatively empty calorie action stories that don’t take too much brain power :)
