Burglaries, Kidnapping, Political Behavior

I read this book for Save Our Cozies Marathon, I found a will-written book with editing faults. I had trouble starting the book, but when I was about a 1/3 into it I started to enjoy it. The main characters did not grab my attention, I remember the suspects better. Names of the characters often miss used leaving me to figure out who was what. The animals were confusing and I felt that she needs to learn about animal behavior. This one is hard to grade, I would like to have given it 3 1/2 stars
Lea and Maddy are sisters that like to explore murders cases. This one involves burglaries of constructions sites. Lea goes to look at a house with lights there were they sudden be. She interrupts a burglary in process one of the dogs jumps the van and Wendy follows it with help from their homicide friend. Arriving at the pier the van's doors are open and the dog is inside. She turns it loose and both dogs take off under the pier. There they find a dead man.
I would recommend this book for YA and a summer read.

Lea and her sister, Maddy, are unexpected sleuths. When Lea finds a body. The sisters know the can't walk away. After all they have a knack for finding information that's helpful to the police. I liked the sisters. They certainly have different personalities, but they work well together. Paul, Lea's husband, has a consulting business which is useful. It also helps that Tom Elliot, the head of Major Crimes Department of the Buena Viaje PD, is receptive to their input. I found him to be intelligent and interesting. The murder victim was a disagreeable man who used everyone which means an abundance of suspects. With this group on the case, I knew that justice would be done. The characters were well written and likeable. Their dialogue was sharp and witty and the mystery was filled with unexpected twists. I enjoyed the writing style of Rayna Morgan. She did a great job keeping me in the dark as to who the killer was.

Lea and Maddy go for a walk on a pier and the dogs finds a dead body. The victim was despised by several people in town including a humiliated fiancé jilted at the altar, angry co-workers jealous of his success, a married lover’s devoted spouse, an employee wrongfully terminated, and dangerous criminal associates. This won't stop these sisters from finding the person responsible for the death, but at what cost? This is a great start of a series that has the makings of many fans who love mysteries, some romance...but not too much, and humor in a wonderful story line.

For a first book in a series the characters were well developed. Lea and her dogs are the heroes in this story. After Lea finds a not to well liked person dead under a pier things get going. Not just one case is solved in this book but several. I will say I wasn't even thinking of who the killer was until about the middle of the book but it wasn't for the reason I thought. Very light reading. I would like to see Maddy and Tom spend more time together on cases as this series develops.

This Californian based cozy about a pair of sisters with sleuthing tenancies and their dogs was a nice change of pace. I was asked to read and review Murder At The Pier and I am very happy to have been asked to do so. I enjoyed the relationships between the sisters, the love interests and the dogs. The mystery was good
and the story I quite enjoyed. This is book one of the Sister Sleuth Series and I look forward to the next adventure with these too!

I was first introduced to this series with the fifth book Murder After Hours. I have since read four of the other books in the series. I enjoyed each book and chain read three since they were substantial and interesting. The sisters aren’t like other characters that do the stupid formula with their investigations, but actually help law enforcement with interviews from reluctant or missed people. The reader never knows where the path will lead since it’s definitely not straight.

The Nut Case: How It All Began – This book was a freebie offered in Murder After Hours. It was just as enjoyable as MAH. A well written, fast paced story with a well thought out plot. The characters are interesting and they have developed continuously in MAH. None of the characters acted stupidly and their dialog was realistic. I contacted the author to review her books. 4*

Murder At The Pier #1 – This picks up after The Nut Case and keeps right on going. This fast-paced, intriguing story keeps the reader glued to the pages. Just when everyone thinks the crime is solved, it gets deeper with intrigue. While the suspect isn’t a surprise, the reader gets a selection of possible criminals. The author does a great job with her descriptions, both characters and scenes. There’s a touch of possible romance; it appears in the making.

I had read the fifth book first, so I saw the growth of the characters as compared to The Nut Case and this book. The dialogue is realistic; there’s no stupid formulas; and the characters are compliment each other, both socially and as crime solving “partners”. 4*

Murder Act Two #2 – Another well-written, fast-paced story with an interesting story line and characters. This story picks up a month after Murder At The Pier stopped. There are the regular characters, as well as new ones. The characters needed for this story are developed enough to keep the reader’s interest. The regulars keep showing more facets to their personalities. Another substantial read, with an interesting plot that really kicks it into gear around the 70 percent mark of the story with autopsy findings; along with the background material that makes it easy to fall into the story. But there’s a bit of preaching when Lea and Jon are talking, not sure if chapter 18 is necessary for the story. 4*

Murder Western Style #3 – This book starts three weeks after Murder Act Two ended. Another interesting novel with our favorite characters and a few new ones. Fast paced and filled with suspense, the book is a substantial story with realistic dialog and no stupid formulas. The ladies are still working with law enforcement without doing the officers’ jobs. The author's descriptions keep the story interesting and the pages fly by quickly. 4*

Murder After Hours #5 – This is my first book by this author and I was pleasantly surprised to find this book substantial and interesting. It is well written, fast paced with a thoughtful, twisting plot. I liked the interesting characters and found them realistic and their dialog better than average. I couldn’t put the book down and finished it in one sitting. It was a pleasure to read book without profanity and sex. I loved the ending. I look forward to reading more of her books. 4*

Hit and Run #6 - Another intriguing and interesting story from one of my new favorite indie authors (a very short list). This is actually different from the previous stories concerning certain family members doing the investigation and the new locations. The sisters' retired father and Lea undertake an investigation while Lea is visiting her parents. She learns a lot of her retired chief of police dad, but still manages to get herself in trouble.

I didn't care that Lea was so free (childlike?) with her information while she was interviewing "suspects"; an example: she said her dad was retired after he said he was CoP. She trusts the word of a "suspect" and takes off flying around Mexico by herself - dumb. But that bit of idiocy aside, the rest of the story and especially the ending is worth reading and entertaining.

Well written and thought out, the story keeps the reader interested in completing the story, even with the stupidity that impulsive Lea engages in while in Mexico. I think the ending gives a good indication of the future for some of the characters and I'm looking forward to seeing more of the partnership between the sisters and their family. Warren and Barbara, the parents, were engaging and likable, and an great addition to this story. 4*

I contacted the author to review her books out of curiosity.

While walking Spirit and Gracie along the beach at the pier Lea’s dogs find a dead body. The dead man had so many enemies it is going to be hard to find out who killed him Lea is married to Paul and puts together promotions or program for people or companies by place bids. Her husband Paul help clients in the construction and development business when he is asked too. He seems to work a good bit, but they have a son Jon and he tries to be there for a thing he has going on. Lea’s sister Maddy is a fashion designer for a large furniture store. Paul has a fried Tom who is a cop and it seems that Paul and Lea are trying to push Maddy and Tom together. She has been divorced 5 years after her husband cheated on her and she seems happy if she does or doesn’t have a date. Both Paul and Tom do not like the girls “snooping”.around crimes, but they call it sleuthing and Lea’s dog Gracie tends to have a nose for bad guys. There are so many twists and turns and finding out all the things the dead man, Neal, was involved with, it is hard to figure out who did it. The main four characters are well thought out and lots of fun. Lea would eat a salad and Maddy would want to make sure she has chocolate. These sleuthing sisters are going to be fun to read, but there is always dander around the corner, that they don’t think ahead of especially Maddie. I will be reading more books by Rayna Morgan with the Sleuthing Sisters, have already bought the next one. I think anyone who likes mystery, a little humor and a little romance will love this book.

A fun afternoon’s entertainment and a good mystery!

Maddy Conley and Lea are sisters with a healthy sense of curiosity, which some might consider nosiness, but combine it with their women’s intuition Lea’s dog Gracie, and you have a pair of talented sleuths.

Their friend, police Lieutenant Tom Elliot, is investigating a string of construction site burglaries around town so when a neighbor calls Lea to say there are intruders at a new home site in their neighborhood, Lea decides to stop by for closer look with Gracie and Spirit. She intends to sneak away and call the police but Gracie chases the burglars and jumps into their van. In the ensuing chase, Lea catches up with the van at the pier where the burglars escaped leaving Gracie behind. While waiting for the police to arrive, Lea walks the dogs on the beach and stumbles over a murder victim.

It seems too much of a coincidence that the van and the dead body are so close, and Tom agrees, and when the victim is identified as having strong ties to the construction industry the scope of the investigation widens.
The story has plenty of plot twists to keep you guessing. The Sleuth Sisters are a fun afternoon’s entertainment.

Having read The Nut Case: A Sister Sleuths Prequel Novella (see my review here) I just had to read book 1 in this delightful cozy.

Maddy is the more adventurous of the sisters but is really good at getting her sister Lea involved! Of course Lea's husband is not at all happy about their sleuthing! They can be pretty sneaky and besides Lea's dog is really good at sniffing out the good from the bad guys! It is actually the dogs who find the dead body under the pier--

Of course Lea's husband and the police detective who is close friends with Maddy but thinks maybe he wants more--warn the two sisters to stay out of this one--good luck guys!!

Plenty of suspects and many twists and turns before the culprit is caught---and Maddy has a new admirer--one who actually saved her from --well you will have to read this book to find out!

Murder at the Pier - a review by Rosemary Kenny

Business writer Lea and her sibling Maddy, are the 'Sister Sleuths' in Rayna Morgan's series.
Book 2 is Murder at the Pier, (or more accurately under it), where Lea and her dogs, Gracie and Spirit find the body of Neal Henderson - an unpopular local construction site boss.
Leah's husband, Paul, a construction site advisor, is hired to see if Neal's death is linked to a spate of thefts from other sites locally...what does he find?
Detective Tom Elliott is hot on the case too, as are Lea and Maddy, in their different ways.
What happens to Maddy and who rescues her?
How are Council members involved?

With an exciting, unpredictable denouement, you won't want to miss, make sure to get your copy of Rayna Morgan's series opener, Murder at the Pier, as soon as you can!

Murder at the Pier is the first book in the series A Sister Sleuths Mystery Books.

The sisters, Lea and Maddy love a good mystery and can't help getting involved along with Lea's dogs, when a series of construction site burglaries take place and then Lea and her dogs stumble across a body. The relationships between the main characteries is fun and there is even the beginning of a romance between Maddy and one of the town people, and hints of attraction between her and a friend of the family. There is danger involved as the sisters get more involved with the investigation. I enjoyed reading this book and looking forward to more. I would rate it a 4 to 4-1/2.

What an interesting book and such great characters. Lea and Maddy make a great pair of amateur sleuths. They have a way of using their intuition and good deductive reasoning to analyze situations and separate the good guys from the bad ones. But they sometimes get themselves into trouble by going a little too far. Lea's husband Paul, and their friend Tom, who is a police detective always try to keep an eye on them and help them whenever possible. Also Tom appreciates their help even though he is always telling them to leave police work to him. Their relationships are fantastic and the mysteries they solve are good ones.

Stand alone who dunnit with lots of suspects and the story being told from the perspective of the two sisters and the detective which means you get to know more than one person. The dogs are a fun addition, especially Gracie. I would have given it 5 stars the author's use of foreshadowing a couple of times either confused me or detracted from the suspense. There were also a couple of typos, but nothing that would dissuade me from reading the rest of the books in this series....could also see these books being made into a tv movie series.

I was sent this book by the author for free in return for an honest review. When I first began readingi was not impressed, it was a very slowly start for me. There was also some missed editing opportunities. I almost stopped reading, but being the authors first book , I read on and am so glad I did. The characters were likeable, and the twists were fun and moved the story along
I am now a fan and am following this series and author. Can't wait for book two. Read this book and you will be hooked. Note I liked the character Maddy.

A well-constructed mystery after the unexpected find of a dead body. A very entertaining read except for the naivety of the sisters which in real life would have gotten them killed. Fortunately for them, it is acceptable for heroes in books and movies to get to live another day. With a victim that no-one feels sorry for, it is a real challenge to predict the perpetrator amongst the multitude of suspects and the story has some interesting twists and turns. I especially like the dog’s role in unraveling the mystery.

Loved this 1st book in this mystery series

Very enjoyable mystery about two sisters who love to solve mysteries. Characters and plot are well developed and keep the reader involved wondering who the killer could be. There is also a growing attraction between one of the sisters and another character. I look forward to the next book in this series and see what the sisters get into. I received this book for an honest review.

Don't let the dogs on the cover fool you, they're not a big part of the book. However, Maddy's dog does play an important role. This book is good then it sneaks up on you and gets better. Although there my be a few things I would like to have changed, (a stronger ending) I give it 5 stars because I'd like to read the next book. If an author can hold my interest and make me want to read more; I think it's a pretty good book.

This was the 1st book in an exciting new cozy mystery! This book has everything a cozy mystery fan likes: an intriguing mystery, interesting characters, and some romance! Sisters Lea & Maddy like to solve mysteries. Some construction sites are robbed and then an unpopular construction manager is murdered. There are quite a few suspects. Their friend Tom is a police detective and the 3 of them, along with Lea's husband Paul, try to narrow down the suspects. This book was enjoyable.

This is my first book to read by Rayna Morgan and this is the first in the series. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and all the characters. Of course, there are dogs in the story, mainly one border collie who got involved with a murder. The main characters are two sisters whose curiousilty winds up curious about police “events”. There is intrigue and mystery. You’re not sure who the killer is til the end. I will definitely read book two.

Two sisters with a knack for getting information, a series of burglaries that becomes a murder case, and a dog. Enough to get your attention? :P

Although there are some mistakes that can be easily cleared with a good editing, the story itself holds its own with grace, and it's a great introduction to the characters. I particularly liked the interactions between the sisters :D

A great option for those who love a cosy mystery series.

Lea keeps seeing things she shouldn’t. Maddy meets a new guy. But who killed Neal? This is a well crafted mystery with plenty of action, humor and leads to the wrong persons and a great ending. I am happy to have discovered Ms. Morgan’s books. I am looking forward to the next one.
I received this book free of charge from the author and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review without other compensation.

Good interesting mystery

This was a good, interesting, 99% clean read. the story kept me interested. There were a few mild profanities, but the author did not take the name of my Lord in vain, and that is big for me. Some mild sexual innuendos, but nothing graphic. AND a great editing job to top it all off!! I recommend this book and will read more by this author.

I’m not usually a fan of cozy mysteries but his one has so much substance that I found myself wanting to know what happens next. The sisters have a cute relationship with each other, ones spouse and maybe a blooming love interest for the other sister. It has all the things you look for in a good mystery.i look forward to more in this series.

Good story

While this story has interesting characters, there are too many people to remember, especially when they weren't involved in the murder. At 62% in the book I was bored and skipping paragraphs. Not sure when I'll get to the next story.
