When an armada of alien ships appears above Earth, the world is thrown into chaos. They warn Earth of an impending disaster, and whether by design or luck, Daniel Sojourner finds himself thrust into the center of an interplanetary conflict spanning back more than a millennium. As he becomes more intertwined in this conflict, he realizes that although billions of people have fought and died, nobody has found the source of the danger. As time runs out for the alien armada and for Earth, Daniel struggles to unravel the mystery of this conflict and his own murky past.
I received an ARC of the book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you ! - - Croatoan Earth is the start of a new sci-fi series by debut author M.V. Johnson. It's incredibly fast-paced and detailed. It starts out as a simple alien invasion story with our protagonist, Daniel Sojourner, caught right in the middle of this conflict. It soon becomes clear that the events unfolding have a deep history and greater consequences than can be imagined. The story has comedic and light-hearted moments sprinkled throughout that set the tone. Despite being around 500 pages, it made for a quick and easy read. The plot takes a lot of twists and turns and holds your attention. Sometimes the writing style and deep detail become slightly distracting. As something exciting is happening, the way the exposition was delivered became distracting. Characterization was okay, but with the amount detail put into the character's every thought it could have been better. - - Overall this was a really good start and debut for the author. It's already out for purchase on amazon for those of you who want to check it out.
A really great story that requires some editing to really become something excellent.
I noted errors along the way, and though they do not take away from the imagination, they certainly highlight the self-published nature of the book.
That said, it’s an excellent story. There are some beats I found a little odd (like how was Earth colonised despite our own understanding of evolution etc) but none of that takes away from an enjoyable read I smashed through in about 4 sittings.
This is such an extremely detailed story with plenty of background. The plot is absolutely amazing and it’s full of twists and turns. Johnson has created such a creative new universe that’s bursting with originality.
I did noticed a few grammar errors (in the physical copy as well as the ebook edition) and repeated words in sentences making some of the paragraphs confusing. But other than that this book was perfection. I’m definitely rooting for there to be a second book soon!
