The Duke's Rules of Engagement

Some matches are made in hell…

Joanna Porter loves being one of London’s hottest up-and-coming matchmakers. But her heavenly vocation is about to turn into a nuptial nightmare—thanks to the Duke of Crestmont. He’s as handsome as he is insufferable and obsessed with all things proper. Matching him would cement Jo’s status as England’s greatest matchmaker. Except, of course, the impossible-to-please duke refuses all of her most eligible ladies…confirming his status as a complete and utter pain in her petticoats.

The Duke of Crestmont can’t believe he needs a matchmaker—let alone this spitfire of a woman whose kissable mouth and dancing, impertinent gray eyes tease him ruthlessly. But the people of his estate are counting on him to find a duchess. A proper lady with a flawless pedigree and immaculate deportment. So why can’t he stop himself from wanting his pert, lively matchmaker…instead of the perfect duchess?

Now the entire ton is watching as this determined, audacious matchmaker takes on the most powerful man in London in USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Haymore’s lively new Regency romp. And this show might just be the most outrageous one yet…

Overall: 4.5 rounded to ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Plot/Storyline: 📖📖📖📖
Feels: 🦋🦋🦋🦋
Emotional Depth: 💔💔💔💔
Sexual Tension: ⚡⚡⚡
Romance: 💞💞💞
Sensuality: 💋💋💋💋
Sex Scene Length: 🍑🍑🍑🍑
Steam Scale (Number of Sex Scenes): 🔥🔥🔥 (might feel hotter to some – I counted 2 scenes close together as 1)
Humor: Yes, a bit
Perspective: Third person from both the hero and heroine

(These are all personal preference on a scale of 1-5 (yours ratings may vary depending what gives you feels and how you prefer you sex scenes written, etc) except the Steam Scale which follows our chart from The Ton and Tartans Book Club )

Should I read in order?
This is the first book in Haymore’s Lions and Ladies series.

Basic plot:
Matthew is a duke that’s looking for a duchess so his inheritance doesn’t go to his unscrupulous heir. He has been deeply hurt by love before so he is going in with a cold heart and wants someone that can host and function in society but definitely doesn’t want to relate to her on a personal level. He enlists our matchmaker Jo for help but they soon find they can’t keep their hands off each other.

Give this a try if you want:
- Regency time period (1817)
- London setting
- Matchmaker trope! Hero comes to heroine’s matchmaking business for her to find him a duchess
- Heroine is described as ‘thick-bones rather than petite, curvy rather than slight’ and is mentioned as being at least 6 inches taller than her female relatives. The hero is tall, at least 6 inches taller than her.
- Hero enjoys meteorology! And also building and racing boats
- Just a touch of instalust – it’s not right off the bat, but soon into their interactions
- Medium steam – 3 full scenes (2 were very close together so I counted as 1)
- Class difference – duke hero and matchmaker/working heroine
- No villain or mystery – most of the focus is on the relationship of the couple and their friends/family

Ages:
- Heroine is 27, hero is 33

My thoughts:
This was my first Jennifer Haymore and there was so much I loved about it!

I generally enjoy the matchmaker trope because it gets our hero and heroine together most of the book (hopefully!) and there’s the possibility for some great angst as they set them up with someone else…

I had a couple minor complaints about some happenings in this book, nothing major.

And I usually struggle with any kind of instalust feel and I thought they had that a bit here...but, wow when they were together I just found it so powerful. It was emotional, it was gripping, and I went from making assumptions about how this book was going to go for me to sending quotes to my book friend soul mate with open mouth faces...I LOVED IT. It didn’t have the strongest sexual tension for me in the beginning but once they started touching each other I really was sold. I enjoyed both characters and liked the writing. When I went back through my highlights for this review I got sucked into some parts again, reading pages and pages of it basking in the emotional aspect of it.

I’ll definitely be trying more Haymore!

Reread this and Lilly didn’t deserve my hate lmao

✨This is Karen Smith. It’s 68° degrees and there’s a 30% chance that she’s already coming.✨

As a whole, this book was a fun time! I didn’t quite know what to expect, but the steam was nice and the main characters were lovable. Matthew was a starchy duke who didn’t know what he wanted until he met Jo. I’m excited for the rest of the series, and I definitely think you should give this a shot, especially if you like matchmaking plots! I had some issues which I’ll expand upon below, but the writing and tone of the book did help make my experience a positive one.

I especially really liked that Jo had curves and that Matthew went absolutely 😍kachow😍 for her (but I hate that the cover doesn’t really show this at ALL). I also liked that his special interest was weather! I was wondering how weather was calculated back then and I learned a lot. It was also just so cute seeing him realize that she was genuinely interested in his interests.

My main issues were the self sacrifice from Jo and, on a lesser scale, the familial duty from Matthew. Jo kept saying she was doing everything for Lilly and her happiness, when I really don’t think Lilly deserved anything Jo gave her. Jo literally supported her financially and Lilly couldn’t keep her trap shut. Maybe I’m just a terrible person but Lilly had a main character complex and I wasn’t reading the book for her, just saying.
**Mild Spoilers** I thought Lilly was going to be a heroine in a future book (Cole’s maybe?)—because Charles was NOT it—but the more I went along I realized Lilly definitely deserved Charles. Jo never understood that Lilly was kind of the worst (she wasn’t that bad but she was annoying at every turn). All I wanted from the end of the book was for Jo to realize that Lilly got a LOT from that friendship.

Matthew’s familial duty wasn’t as annoying, but I think I realized matchmaker plots aren’t necessarily my favorite thing. The fundamental part of the book was Jo actively pushing Matthew to other women and yes, that’s matchmaking Hannah (!), so I just don’t really like it. That being said, the two still spent a great amount of time together and I’m happy with how it ended for Harriet.

This was my first book by the author, and I’ll definitely be reading more. While the main plot forces weren’t my favorite, I liked the writing style and was so happy with the steam!

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5 🌶🌶.25*/5

*He didn’t go down on her which I found odd, but I liked his mildly dirty talk and overall “come for me” mentality. We got three or so scenes and I was definitely pleased, since I had no clue what to expect.

Thanks so much to the publisher and TLC Book Tours for an eARC via NetGalley and a gifted finished copy. All opinions are honest and my own.

Unique and steamy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One of my favorite types of historical romance is when the author breaks the “rules” of a stereotypical story. Our female main character has a job. As a member of the working class, she finds herself in a unique position when a duke catches her completely by surprise and becomes a client. Sparks fly and so do the pages!
There are so many wonderful qualities that Haymore has added to this story. Good friendships, for him and her. Hot romance, which is selectively found in this genre. Delightful atmosphere and details that fill the heart as you turn the pages.
The Duke’s Rules Of Engagement is authentic and factual with a balance of lightness, humor, romance, and spice that will capture your attention and leave your heart happy. I look forward to reading more from this author!
We stan a lady who believes in love and a starchy nobleman who just wants a perfect wife - no emotions involved! Matthew is a duke. He's decided it's time to get married (because he can't let his dissolute uncle inherit!) and after a few awkward social gatherings he figures that the easiest route to marriage is through a matchmaker. Luckily for him, he's referred to Joanna Porter by one of his friends whose match she arranged. Unluckily for him, Jo believes in finding only love matches for her clients, and if there's one thing Matthew doesn't want to do, it's fall in love.
To no romance reader's surprise, it turns out that Joanna is Matthew's perfect match: they share an interest in the weather that goes beyond small talk, and she's certainly not a deferential miss. As they grow closer together, Jo realizes she can't stay objective when trying to find his perfect bride. For his part, Matthew is fixated on finding the perfect duchess, which includes a perfect bloodline as well.
Although it doesn't include many surprises, the book is well-written and fun. Plus it's on the steamier side for a Regency romance, with two characters who do their best to resist each other but can't help but fail!
This objective review is based on a complimentary copy of the novel.
This was just a miss for me. I didn't connect with the characters, the romance didn't make me swoon and the pacing was bogged down by lengthy descriptions that I ended up skimming most of.
How have I gone this long without reading a HistRom hero who is this much like Mr. Darcy?
Because Matthew, the Duke of Crestmont, is Mr. Darcy! Proud and reserved, yes. But mostly just so dang awkward, slow to trust others, and difficult to get to open up.
Which was why this setup was everything! Jo was a matchmaker with this broody Duke as her new client. And it was the perfect way to showcase this kind of hero—the kind who’s so reserved that unless the story is childhood friends to lovers or the MCs are trapped somewhere together for months, the relationship ain’t happening. Except here, professionally, Jo had to get to know him, and he had to let her. And they were so compatible! My heart!
This social class difference trope was great (and I’m usually so critical of it). Love a heroine who is as obsessed with romantic compatibility as I am. I loved both of their friend groups!
And this had ALL the matchmaker-client falling for each other when he’s supposed to be proposing to someone else ANGST.
But the best part? Somehow, this book had steaming steam (that starting fairly early too) but also made me turn to goo with every ‘pinky finger touch’ and ‘gloved hand grazing ungloved hand’ until the very end. Like, how? Actually, I know how: it was the insane amount of longing these two had for each other. There was an absolute forest of pining here 🌲🌲
This story had a ton of historical details and most of the time I loved them but ngl, there were moments where the story felt bogged down by them. Still, it’s a five star read for me, because the rest was too good!
Joanna Porter is known as a successful matchmaker. Using the moniker Mrs. Porter, she is determined to always make a love match for her clients. Matthew Leighton, Duke of Crestmont, needs a wife and an heir. He visits Mrs. Porter to make a match with his rules for the perfect duchess. Joanna is determined to find him a wife and love. Everything goes awry when Joanna falls in love with him herself. Unfortunately she doesn't fit any of his rules. She plays her part in his match too well and it comes back to break her heart. A cold hearted Duke must decide the most important thing in his life.
A very emotional rollercoaster with steam.
Joanna Porter is a matchmaker, known for her happily wedded couples. But Matthew, Duke of Crestmont, isn't looking for an ever after ending...he just wants a "proper" duchess to wed and tolerate so he can have an heir and keep the title from passing to his uncle. They butt heads as she tries to help him find a bride, but he can’t stop thinking of the one woman who shouldn’t be on his list.
This is my first time reading a book from Jennifer Haymore and it was an enjoyable experience. The book started with some humor, as a seemingly insufferable duke tried matchmaker Jo's patience. It wasn't the grumpy/sunshine opposites attract type story I was expecting from the blurb, though. Jo and Matthew had some nice, private interactions and realized they actually had quite a bit in common. There was one moment later in the book that soured me a little bit, but I still think the story came together well.
Tropes: Class Difference, Working Heroine/Matchmaker
The Duke’s Rules of Engagement is the newest book from Jennifer Haymore. I was actually a little wary going into this one because I wasn’t a fan of some of the books I’ve read from this author in the past (they were published around 2010). But I’m so glad I read this one because I really enjoyed it so much more!
Joanna Porter is one of London’s hottest up-and-coming matchmakers and she loves love. She wants all of the couples she sets up to be perfect, love matches. She wants everyone to find love, even if she herself will never have it since she’s a spinster firmly tucked high upon the shelf at 27. 😆 She ends up meeting her new client, Matthew Leighton, Duke of Crestmont, who comes to her office one day. Matthew needs a perfect bride who will make a fine duchess and provide him the required heir and spare. He is a bit flabbergasted that Jo wants to find him a love match, because he doesn’t believe love should be involved when finding him a duchess who will fit society’s standards. Matthew’s parents were very much in love but after their death when he was just 17 he felt very alone in the world, he was also burned in the past by a woman, and so he just doesn’t want love on the table going further.
Of course, Matthew and Jo end up spending a lot of time together and both start enjoying one another’s company and even looking forward to it each week. I loved seeing their relationship develop and how well they got along. Matthew is into rowing and meteorology, I loved seeing him share his passions for boat-building, rowing, and his charting of weather patterns with Jo. I enjoyed the side characters as well in this one and the people Jo tries to help find matches. This was just a delightful read and I liked how everything was resolved, it all felt like real reactions and I got where both characters were coming from when they did has issues arise.
Joanna Porter is in love with love. She lives it; she breathes it; she even makes her living at it. So, when the Duke of Crestmore shows up at her door requesting that she make a match for him – but without love involved – she is totally aghast. At first, she is at war with herself because making a match without love would shatter her matchmaking reputation. On the other hand, matching someone like the duke – love or not – should do wonders for her business. What to do – what to do? The solution is simple, she’ll match him, but she’ll assure that it is a love match. Simple – right – especially since he is so very handsome and attractive.
Matthew Leighton, the Duke of Crestmont, was NOT in love with love and wanted no part of it. He would marry because it was his duty to marry and produce an heir – if only he had a more acceptable heir than his uncle, he’d forego the whole thing. What he wanted was a ‘perfect’ duchess with a perfect pedigree and lineage. One who could flawlessly run his homes, host his parties/dinners/soirees and produce his children. It wouldn’t be amiss if she were passably attractive so bedding her wouldn’t be a chore. He didn’t think he was asking the matchmaker for too much – a match for him should be fairly straightforward. Why was she staring at him agape? Even with her mouth hanging open she was an attractive woman – too bad she wasn’t perfect duchess material.
When a crisis within her own household and the duke’s request for a ‘perfect’ duchess (without love) converge for the perfect storm, Jo knows just what she needs to do. Yes, she’ll match the duke. Yes, she knows the perfect candidate. Yes, she’ll contrive to make him love that candidate if at all possible. That will solve everything – the problem within her own household will be solved; the duke will have his required match, and her romantic soul will be satisfied. Ah! The best-laid plans …
I really enjoyed meeting Jo and Matthew and getting to know their joys and their vulnerabilities. While Jo didn’t have any deep, dark secrets, it was poignant to see someone who was so in love with love facing a future without it. Then, there was Matthew who had such close friendships, yet he couldn’t open himself to having a happy loving family in his future. Their journey was a lovely one and I am so glad I had the opportunity to read this well-written story.
"I'd love to see you come. To make you scream my name. To watch your face while I give you pleasure."
Swoon!
Respectful and cool, Duke of Crestmont, Matthew Leighton is searching for the perfect Duchess with impeccable pedigree and excellent mannerism. He needs an extra push to find the perfect someone and meets... spinster and matchmaker, Joanna Porter. Joanna is a business woman, skillfully creating love matches time after time. Sparks slowly fly between them and their scenes get steamy!
I love them to pieces! Matthew is so tough yet enduring. He just makes me swoon and I think I'll claim him as my next book boyfriend. 😂 Joanna is so funny! One of my favorites lines:
"... Perhaps you should ask one of them to dance. Who knows, one of them might be The One."
"All this talk of The One," he muttered. "Isn't that what you're searching for? I assume you don't intend to engage in polygamy."
😂💥🤌
I do have to say I didn't care for the minor characters. I would have been happy if it solely focused on h/H the entire time, which is why it isn’t a 5.
This was such a good book! Honestly, I think it might be my favourite historical romance this year. I loved the writing, I loved the characters and I loved the premise and plot.
The Dukes Rules of Engagement is a lovely historical romance with great messages and a wonderful love story. Jo works as a matchmaker and is happy to pair others though she’s resigned to being alone. Her newest client Matthew Leighton, the Duke of Crestmont, hires her to find him a wife who will do her duty and provide him with an heir. However, he does not want a love match, and his requirements for a wife are vague. As Jo assists Matthew in procuring a duchess, she finds herself falling for him.
Jo and Matthew have a wonderful love story filled with great banter and chemistry. Jo believes in love, though she hasn’t found it for herself. She works hard to provide for her family and often puts others needs ahead of her own. Matthew, too, often thinks of others and not himself. Reluctant to fall in love again, he is more bound by obligation and duty. He was wounded by love in the past and doesn’t want to risk having his heart broken again. I like how Jo slowly changes his feelings toward love and marriage. She shows him that not everyone is after his title and wealth. They have so many fun and heartwarming moments, and their growing feelings for each other are positively swoon-worthy!
Something else I really enjoyed in the story is the protagonists shared interest in the weather. The scenes where Matthew opens up to Jo, especially when talking about weather and showing her new weather-related technologies are fantastic. They are able to connect on an even deeper level because of their unique shared interest.
The story has many messages about friends, family, classism, loss, grief, gender inequities, and more. I like that the author weaves such important themes into the story in an organic and natural way and thought these messages added even more depth to the story. It’s a well-paced and layered read and one I’d definitely recommend to historical romance readers.
This was my first Jennifer Haymore book and it did not disappoint! This was also my first matchmaker trope and again it didn’t disappoint. I really enjoyed watching Jo and Matthew (the Duke) get to know each other and fall for each other but she still had a job to do. Even though she is falling for this salty Duke she has to find him the “perfect” duchess.
Besides the sexual tension and spice I think my favorite parts were when their friends showed up. The Duke’s friends were just excellent! Can I have a book on each one of them? Also, Lilly really surprised me in the end. I didn’t see her making that kind of scene but it was fabulous!
I hope I get a book for each one of the Duke’s friends, especially Jameson 😏 I feel he has real book boyfriend material!
The Duke’s Rules of Engagement by Jennifer Haymore follows matchmaker Joanna Porter. She is tasked with finding a wife for Matthew, the Duke of Crestmont, who is seemingly impossible to please. The Duke knows how important it is for him to find an acceptable wife to become his duchess. But he can’t stop himself from being drawn to Joanna. He and Joanna try to fight the attraction for the good of their own causes.
I always enjoy a matchmaker romance. I felt the heat between the couple almost instantly. I enjoyed Joanna’s dedication to her line of work and her friends. Matthew is definitely one of the starchiest heroes I’ve read. I need to read more from Jennifer Haymore!
“The Duke’s Rules of Engagement” by Jennifer Haymore likeable and good read. Either I’m slow in the mind or jumbled at the start, the title got lost in translation as I really didn’t put it together until halfway through the story.
Miss Joanna Porter is a spinster who has a matchmaking business, earning her money from the ton. She is introduced to Matthew, the Duke of Crestmont as a new client and one who will bring notary to her business. Matthew wants a wife however does not have a clue in the criteria he is looking for in such a wife and it must not be based on love. He doesn’t believe in love but wants a perfect duchess that comes from a well-to-do family and one amiable to what he requires. Jo is bent on proving him wrong on the notion of love and not one bent on societal obligations. As the two work together to find him a match, an underlying attraction draws them closer not only in a working relationship but one of a romantic notion.
Matthew and Jo were likeable individuals, however you had to feel some sympathy for the heroine as she lives a lonely life…seeing those around her and hired by her finding love. I did not connect right off with Matthew, but as the story progress he became a sensitive and caring person somewhat. I did not like his pursuit of Jo…having no intention of marrying her but wants to take the risk of exploring her intimately knowing she could become ruined in the process. His summation…thinking she is jealous of the women he is pursuing.
Another bit far off for Regency is that Jo, a spinster woman owning an establishment could have an exclusivity into balls throughout the seasons. A lost in translation that had me thinking this was to be a bit more modern or reserved regency…couldn’t grasp.
If I were reading just on paper, this was a delightful read but a bit dry. I quite liked the main characters as well as the supporting ones. There was romance, conflict, angst and steamy sex that had you turning pages.
This was my first book by Jennifer Haymore and I thoroughly enjoyed it! It certainly won't be my last.
Joanna Porter is a Matchmaker that is truly in love with love. Sadly, she has never experienced it for herself. When the Duke of Crestmont comes to her to find his Duchess she is in for quite a challenge. The Duke doesn't believe in love and a love match is the last thing on his mind. Jo is determined to change his mind and find him The One. That is until she starts having feelings for him herself. A Matchmaker can't fall for her client, especially not when that client is a Duke.
I thought Joanna was a wonderful and truly kind character. She was willing to put the happiness of her dear friend above her own. She was also devoted to finding the best matches for her clients.
Matthew, the Duke of Crestmont is also very likable in his own way. He has a hard shell on the outside, but on the inside, he has a very big heart.
These two as a couple are very easy to root for.
The Duke's Rules of Engagement was a delightful and very entertaining Historical Romance. I can't recommend it enough!
4.5 stars, rounded up
After the death of her father, Joanna “Jo” Porter moved her family to London and started a matchmaking service. Over the years, her reputation for excellent matches has grown and she is now very sought-after and is able to support her family. If that means that she is destined to be alone, so be it, at least her dearest friend and companion, Lilly has made a love match and is expecting a proposal any day. But when Lilly’s beau Charles suddenly ends their courtship, Lilly is heartbroken and Jo is furious. Jo confronts Charles and learns the truth – he loves Lilly, but he is broke and has five sisters to dower, so he needs a rich bride, but sadly, Lilly has no dowry, so he broke things off with her. Jo understands his dilemma, but she is heartbroken for Lilly. But when Matthew Leighton, the Duke of Crestmont hires Jo to find him a “perfect duchess” and insists that he doesn’t believe in love and he certainly isn’t looking for a love match, Jo wonders if she can kill two birds with one stone by matching the duke with Charles’ sister, Harriet, she would make a perfect duchess, and then Charles will be able to marry Lilly – it’s perfect! What could possibly go wrong?
Matthew is intrigued by the matchmaker and to his complete surprise, he finds himself telling her things that he has only told his closest friends. He tells her of hobbies and his parent's death and his grief, he even tells her of the girl who pulled him out of despair, showed him love, and then crushed his heart all over again, when his uncle revealed her deception. Heartbroken once again, Matthew decided then and there, that there would be no love for him, but he needs an heir and for that, he needs a wife and he decides that Harriet will make an acceptable duchess. Jo can’t believe that he doesn’t want love and hopes that he will find love with Harriet. But the more time they spend together, the more they dread his eventual betrothal to Harriet. Will Matthew let his heart take a chance on love or will the past repeat itself and leave him heartbroken yet again?
This was a well-written, fast-paced story with a familiar trope, wrapped in fresh ideas. Jo and Matthew are both very likable characters and have instant chemistry. I really enjoyed Matthew’s hobbies of rowing and meteorology – those are things that I don’t recall ever reading about before and it was an interesting and fun change from the “norm”. This book is filled with secrets, great secondary characters, steamy love scenes, the most uncomfortable chair in London, a little heartache, a duke getting a dressing down, and finally a HEA complete with an epilogue. This was a fun start to a new series and now I am anxiously awaiting the next book in the series and wonder who will be the next Rowing Club Lion to find their HEA!
I now fully believe that an audiobook is only as good as the narrator. I was really looking forward to reading this one, but I could only get the audiobook, so I had to listen to it fully on audio. The narrator wasn't bad. However, she wasn't the greatest. I was kind of bored at times listening to this, and could honestly care less about the characters. It wasn't a bad book by any means, I just had a hard time committing myself to listening to the audiobook. I even slowed it way down, and it just felt like it took forever to get through. I hope one day I am able to reread this one as a ebook or physical book, but until that day comes, this was an okay book that I liked at times, but was still a little boring for me.
4.5 Stars! Loved it!! This author got me so invested in the outcome of not only the main characters, Jo and Mathew, but now I want to read about the secondary characters too. I especially loved the HEA ending & epilogue! Maybe it’s because I’ve read a lot of romance books and have pretty much read it all in terms of ‘sexy time’ scenes but now I tend to skim through those parts, not really interested. Other than that, this book had me wanting to sit around and read it all day & to H, E, double hockey sticks(LL) with family time or food. I really enjoyed the witty banter between Jo & Mathew and was rooting for them to get it together. I’m definitely recommending this to anyone that enjoys historical romance. This is the first time I’ve read this author but it won’t be the last!
It started off interesting but started dragging in the second half. The chemistry and banter was alright. It was there but wasn’t fantastic.
The writing was an issue to me. It felt as if half the book was spent on just inner thinking and Jo’s other matchmaking duties that I just wasn’t interested in, and the other half was the interaction and romance between Jo and Matthew—which was wayyy too little, as I couldn’t see the romance between them.
Nevertheless, the book was not horrible and held my attention for the first half, so 3 stars.
Tropes:
~historical romance
~class difference
~Duke hero
~plus size heroine
~heroine with a career as a matchmaker
I adored this! The drama with the side characters made me extra invested, but the slow burn romance between the MCs was so sweet (and steamy)!
Joanna Porter is a matchmaker, known for her happily wedded couples. But Matthew, Duke of Crestmont, isn't looking for an ever after ending...he just wants a "proper" duchess to wed and tolerate so he can have an heir and keep the title from passing to his uncle. They butt heads as she tries to help him find a bride, but he can’t stop thinking of the one woman who shouldn’t be on his list.
This is my first time reading a book from Jennifer Haymore and it was an enjoyable experience. The book started with some humor, as a seemingly insufferable duke tried matchmaker Jo's patience. It wasn't the grumpy/sunshine opposites attract type story I was expecting from the blurb, though. Jo and Matthew had some nice, private interactions and realized they actually had quite a bit in common. There was one moment later in the book that soured me a little bit, but I still think the story came together well.
Tropes: Class Difference, Working Heroine/Matchmaker
Steam: 3
Happy little quick read historical 💕
Matthew needs a wife because he needs and heir and obvs stuffy old dukes can’t find wives on their own!! Enter Joanna (Jo), matchmaker extraordinaire, who is set on finding a wealthy match for the Cherrington family so her best friend can marry the man of her dreams. Matthew marries Harriet, Harriet’s family gets money, Harriet’s brother marries Jo’s poor bestie Lilly. Everyone wins, right?! But of course Matthew’s plans to marry without love get derailed with Jo’s smiles and Jo just can’t seem to keep her relationship with her ducal client professional! Who is gonna end up with who and how will everyone get their HEA?!
I really enjoyed the beginning of this book. I like books that have a solid basis for two people not being together and the whole “she’s not good enough for me because I have a title” bit is so annoying to me and overdone and I hate it, but adding in Lilly’s heartbreak and Jo’s mission to see her friend marry the man of her dreams was so admirable. Even though I genuinely think the friendship is lopsided and unhealthy, but that’s another subject 😅
My only complaint with this book (as it is with most romance books these days,) is the 80% mark. I was soooo intrigued and curious as to how it was going to end and work out and when we get to the ending I was left like….wtf is this fight? Really? We are fighting over…this? I guess I could believe it? But I was hoping for a more mature ending and not a fall out that barely made sense.
But overall, fun read!
Thanks Entangled for the ARC! Review is my own.
4 🌟's!
📝 tropes: duke x matchmaker, businesswoman, mutual pining, angst, class diff, workplace rom
🌶 spice: 3/5
very pleasantly surprised at how much i enjoyed this one omg!! i am honestly growing to love the microtrope/character trope of matchmakers because it brings forth so much angst and pining from both parties I LOVE IT. it made this so addicting to read and i found myself keep coming back to it, so much so i finished it in 2 days :)
my only qualm i had with this is the last 20% of it dragged for me a bit and i was skimming but overall, i loved the other 80% and definitely think that if the matchmaker trope is something you're interested in, you'll definitely want to check this one out!
also, was kind of surprised at how steamy this was :000 no complaints ofc.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to the publisher Entangled: Amara for this e-ARC via Netgalley. Releases September 27th, 2022!
