Nearly Human

Rate this book
My day started with three werewolves in line ahead of me at the deli, and it went downhill from there.
Coming home to small town Texas wasn't exactly on my to-do list after medical school but here I am, sitting pretty in my new role as Doctor Landry Babin, medical examiner, no longer Landry, that weird Babin kid.
But...
There's two werewolf victims in my office and Ethan Stone, the new sheriff, in my waiting room.
The new sheriff who is also my high school boyfriend. And, oh yeah, a werewolf too.
There's someone experimenting on weres and humans alike, and I'm pretty sure I'm on their list of potential lab rats.
Whoever it is, they know that I'm not entirely human.

This novel began as a novella called Wolf's Mark and has been significantly expanded and contains new material.
This is NON-A/B/O and does not contain mpreg.

pacing issues

Fifteen years, and you melt into a pile of goo the minute your ex shows up? Then have weird fights as y’all process what was a summer fling.

Then it’s nothing but sheer terror and confusion and multiple abductions, and kissing your hot almost boyfriend and werewolf identity crisis.

This one was an extremely dry run that started off well enough than forked into so many different directions that it lost the way.The characters lacked appeal, the main character Landry lacked a spine, maybe even a brain and voluntarily tied himself regularly to the train tracks for his psycho aunt to run over. The world building was practically zero. The book ends pretty abruptly.

STEAMY ACTION PACKED SECOND CHANCE LOVE!

This was a steamy delightful sometimes witty but always action filled story that had me enthralled from the first page!

The main characters Landry Babin and Ethan Stone has a history of being ex lovers when they were on the brink of adulthood in the small town of Belmarais until Ethan broke it off and Landry went off to college...

Now ten years later Landry is the coroner for Hitchens County and Ethan is the new sheriff and clan leader of Belmarais and a mysterious and vicious murder of two young adults causes their paths to cross again....

Landry has special abilities and half the town are werewolves so take a ride on their journey which will have you enthralled and captivated with all the twist and turns ahead!

I look forward to their next adventure!

Landry and Ethan's Murder Case . . .

Dr. Landry Babin is the medical examiner for Hitchens County. He took his lunch break and headed to the deli, but had some trouble with three werewolves ahead of him getting food. Before he could get out the door with his own food, his office called to hurry back for something important. The sheriff had called 3 times already while Landry was getting lunch. Two bodies needed Landry’s attention, a rush order from the sheriff down in Tuttle. So he ate his sandwich in 4 bites as he reached the office. But as he turned to use his keycard, one of the werewolves was only a couple stores down and watching him intently. He hurried in, locking the doors behind him. Then he got started on the bodies. Jessica Raymond had severe trauma, not from a dog as the coroner had suggested, but from a large predator, not human and this was not an accident; she was torn into deliberately and pulled apart. Precision and intent meant it was not an animal. But for the first time in his career, he lied and dictated into the recording that it was an unknown animal and not a human. Then he went on to the next body.

When Reba came down to tell him the sheriff was here, she referred to the “new guy”. This was Sheriff Michael’s replacement when he retired last year. And she told him the new guy was Ethan Stone! Landry and Ethan were briefly ex-lovers back in high school when Landry was 17 and a nerd. But that’s when Ethan had finally noticed him. This is 10 years later and, in addition to being the new sheriff, Ethan is the werewolf clan leader of Belmarais. With Landry having special abilities and not quite human himself, will he be willing to work with Ethan on this dual murder case? With someone running experiments on weres and humans, the danger is even more likely to strike them if they don’t find out who is behind this.

This was a really good story line with excellent characters. The bad guys were described so well that I had goosebumps on my arms as they sniffed and intimidated Landry at the deli. And the personalities of the main characters were perfectly drawn out to make them feel like real people. The humor was well-placed and helped the flow of the story. This is definitely a series I intend to follow! Grab your copy and enjoy!

I read another book by this author and enjoyed it moderately, but the protagonist in this one just annoyed me with his repeated dumb decisions (or indecisions).

While I was reading, I somehow imperceptibly fell in love with this strange, intense, fascinatingly weird fictional world, where the dying lines of werewolves and shapeshifters coexist with the human one, trying to remain hidden and untouched. But some werewolves want to give their dying world a chance for a fresh start at any cost. And that's the moment when this story is born, following the lives of a group of children and adults who have literally gone through the hell of medical trials and experiments without ever explicitly consenting to be subjected to these changes. The common thread between the fates of all the survivors is that they carry within them a special recessive gene inherited somewhere from the generations before them.
The story is heavily plot driven, world building oriented and the romantic relationship of Dr.Landry Babin and Ethan is the spice, not the main meal.
Landry is one of the survivors. He is also a first generation product heavily affected by everything done to him while he was growing up.Not quite human and not quite were, he feels like he doesn't belong anywhere. The cruel and harsh world of the non humans constantly reminds him that he isn't welcome there, that he is a prey not a predator. Ethan is exactly on the other side of the border - born were, destined to lead his small, very conservative and aloof clan.
This s the first book in a series that follows the adventures of Landry and Ethan who are trying to build up their relationship while fighting for their lives and surviving the odds stacked up high against them.

Intriguing first book

My first book from Meredith Spies and I was completely caught up in the mystery of Landry Babin. The story was really good and I couldn't wait to find out what was going on, what had apparently going on for a very long time. I was as confused as Landry and didn't guess where it was heading or how deeply involved it all was.
The pacing was quite slow, allowing events and expositions to unfold, and I was fine with that because I was enjoying the story, but the ending was rushed. Everything tumbled out without being completely clear and I wanted more details and clarity. I thought that the next book would be about another person/couple but it appears that Landry's story is going to continue so I expect more answers as the series continues.
I need more Landry and Ethan, so much more. Skirting around each other in the present, giving us details of their past, is not enough for me. I just want more. Tyler intrigues me, as does Waltrip, and I hope we get to see more of them too.
I'm definitely invested enough to keep reading the series.

This book is a good read. There are some parts that require more attention because of changing time lines. At first they seem weird but they mesh with the plot and help make things clearer. Landry, a county coroner, starts his day meeting three werewolves. Then it gets worse when he has to autopsy a couple that was killed by a were. But he cannot say that was the reason. The sheriff, Ethan, handling that case is his old flame and also a werewolf. As the two men investigate this case it becomes apparent that someone has taken an interest in werewolves. This person also has knowledge of Landry’s past. The two men will have to work through their past to have a future and stop what is goin on with the werewolves.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Running into three strange werewolves is just the start of a run of bad and good discoveries for Landry. Landry has to examine two bodies and then finds out his old boyfriend is the new sheriff. Ethan and Landry still have feelings for each other. Finding out about the experiments and finally being able to shift is hard enough but the betrayal by his Aunt Cleverly was the worst. Although to be fair she tried to redeem her actions. However shutting down one lab is only the start and there is much more to be done.

I’ve been a fan of Meredith Spies since I read their first book last year. Nearly Human is the opening story in an exciting new series. While I am not a big werewolf fan, the author has found a new take on this well-worn trope. They do an excellent job of writing about flawed main characters and making the reader care about what happens to them. Even more important, they can write an alpha male that I don’t hate, which is rare. Landry, a pathologist, takes a job near his hometown and almost immediately gets caught up in bizarre goings-on. Part of his involvement is due to his naivete. Even I guessed who one of the bad guys was well before he did. I liked that the author made one of the potential bad guys someone I wound up liking and hope to read more about in the next book in the series. The author has a great couple in Landry and Ethan who get a second chance at seeing what they are to each other when Landry moves back to town as the medical examiner. Things are immediately complicated, however, by a great mystery involving just who is killing werewolves, what the larger plan may be and how that involves Landry as well. The world building is great and I can't wait to see where this series goes.

I think they have a nice start to the 'Marked' series in hand. I am excited too see where the storyline is going and what will happen with the others they find.
Partly through I lost interest a bit, because the story became a bit less clear for me. But after passing that part I was back into the story with a vengeance. Now I have to wait to find out more. Ethan and Landry did get their second chance and are together (for now?) at the end of the book and getting to grips with all that transpired in this short period of time in their lives.
I really did like this book because 'the bad persons' are a good mix of just plain old evil and some misguided persons .

Landry and Ethan were lover when they were seventeen but things didn't turn out because of what Landry wasn't. Now Landry is a coroner and Ethan is a sheriff. Landry is a broken wolf who can't shift but he has super senses and Ethan is a shifter who is the head of his pack, Ethan still loves Landry and will do anything to get him back. Something is happening in the towns around them and it has to do with the reason Landry is the way he is. I really enjoyed this book.

Landry is the medical examiner of his home town. His ex, Ethan Stone, shows up as the new sheriff.
Landry finds himself mixed up in something that is unbelievable.
This story has a lot of twist and turns and ends on a cliffhanger

Really interesting story with very unusual plot twists which I hadn't expected. Werewolf story with a difference. I really enjoyed Landry. The story changed in time quite often which was sometimes not clear straight away and was therefore occasionally confusing.

This book has mystery, adventure, romance and danger. For one i could not stop reading until the end. There are so many questionable individuals, the main character Landry doesn’t know who he can trust. His aunt, the former love interest from high school now sheriff, the P.I or co-workers. Landry is abducted, experimented on and finding truths he would rather not know. Very thrilling book!

Good Story, Needs an Editor

It was a good story. ALOT of editing errors, so if that bothers you here’s your trigger warning. But honestly the story was good. I felt like it needed another run through to just pull the whole thing together a bit better, but I’ll read the second one. Writing is damn hard, so I appreciate the book as it is. Hoping that the next one is even better.

Landry and Ethan had a summer together as teens and left things badly. Coming together years later, the chemistry is still there. I loved the balance struck between understanding what had happened in their shared past and moving forward as adults.

The mystery plot was tight and entertaining as well; the pieces of Landry’s college years were interwoven with the present to give more weight to just what is going on with the werewolves in Texas and beyond but none of the past experiences took over the narrative. I was invested from the very beginning and definitely be picking up the next one.

Good start to the series!

Landry’s abilities intrigued me; he wasn’t completely human nor werewolf.

Ethan and Landry had a strong magnetic pull but the tension between them didn’t feel fully resolved.

I received an ARC of Hunters Mark, and upon reading the first couple of pages- knew I'd be getting no sleep that night... some books take chapters before their vacuum-like pulling of my eyes comes on. The synopsis perhaps should have capitalized the word SUSPENSE in my opinion. The descriptive nature of Meredith's writing drops you right into the mind of Landry and you can even smell what's going on around him; and WOW there really is a lot going on around him. Trying to write this without spoilers, by the way. Despite the unfolding secrets, chaos and order of life with werewolves there is a very feisty yet wholesome love story tucked into this book. This, as well as , well placed witty puns makes for a great dancelike flow and definitely eases the sting of the villains being villainous. While I will miss the friends I made in this book, err I mean characters, while waiting for book 2... I'm not pissed about the ending. It felt like a nice brain hug actually.
P.s. cheers for release during pride LGBTQIA

Unbelievably Bad

This is one of the most disconnected and confusing books I’ve downloaded from KU in a long time. There is no character development and the storyline jumps around like stream-of-consciousness.

There is no world building for this strange shifter world view. Many references to feelings and senses with zero definition for the why or how. Supposedly MM sex which reads like monkey-sex.

There is nothing here for me to recommend other than it’s best you stay far from this.
