This fun addition to the Cookies & Chance Mysteries series is set on a cruise from Florida to the Bahamas. The whole Colwestern, New York gang is on a senior's cruise thanks to Dominic Muccio, mortician, author, and owner of a funeral home. He has the family plus Josie and hubby Rob, Grandma Rosa's friend Nicoletta and boyfriend along on the trip where he is giving a presentation to the geriatric crowd. Sally, owner of Sally's Samples Bakery, and her best friend/baker Josie are catering the event with some of their popular fortune cookies and coffin cookies. But then Sara Leigh Walker, the fakey overly sweet Culinary Director is found dead by Sally and Josie in the galley walk in freezer. Wacky Nicoletta is accused of killing Sara Leigh and wants Sally to find the real killer. Thankfully, Gianna, sister of Sally and granddaughter in law of Nicoletta, is along to be her defense attorney. In typical Sally and Josie fashion, they jump in and look at the suspects and clues but at their own detriment. There goes the romantic trip that Sally and Josie had in mind with their hubbies. This is another great episode in the series.

Seasoned with Murder Earns 5/5 Ports of Call…Entertaining Cozy Gem!

The Donovan-Muccio-Sullivan families are setting sail on Seas the Moment, but it isn’t quite the trip of a lifetime; it’s a “working vacation.” Sally’s dad is a guest speaker at a mortuary exposition on board and Sally and Josie are signed up to help with the desserts. The executive director of the ship’s kitchens Sarah Leigh Walker is excited to work with Sally and Josie, but she’s a little too friendly with Mike and a bit too snarky with the kitchen staff. She loves the “cookie with a conscience” and orders a few hundred as a treat for the passengers. Her friendliness gets her in trouble when she fawns over Nicoletta’s boyfriend, Ronald, leading to a verbal, then physical, “cat fight” between Sarah Leigh and Mrs. Gavelli. So when her body is found in the freezer, Nicoletta is suspect number one!

Catherine Bruns takes the group on the road [ocean] in this twelfth book. It has a fun soap opera-ish feel with various familial dynamics and quirky personalities, but it’s fast to channel Agatha Christie when the body is discovered. Implicating Nicoletta Gavelli is a delightful plus since she’s needed a bit of karma sent her way for her antagonistic manner. Secrets and connections are exposed along with jealousies, revenge, and greed in this “locked room” style murder with a killer that couldn’t get on or off the ship. Sally and the family are plagued with some entertaining, nail-biting moments, and of course, last minute revelations at gun point and a final wrap up left me thoroughly pleased.

The murder mystery, investigation, high seas setting, and danger prefacing an arrest is pure Catherine Bruns’ fun, but so is her writing style. Descriptive language paints the nuances of the ship, the cruise, and characters and dialogue illustrates the various multi-generational personalities and emotions. This series is a favorite! I’ve enjoyed following the changes in Sally from bruised divorcée to loving wife and mother. Her BFF is more a sister and her sister is also a good friend. For comic relief, Sal’s parents are the definition of quirky from her “hot stuff” mother’s youthful attitude and fashion to her Mr. Death dad’s fascination, now his business, with all things funerals, and Grandma Rosa offers insightful words of wisdom. With a clever story, realistic snooping, good trouble, wonderful characters, and several cookie recipes, this series is a Top Ten favorite!

Disclosure: I received an ARC from Gemma Halliday Publishing. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.

SEASONED WITH MURDER is the twelfth book in the Cookies & Chance Mysteries by Catherine Bruns. With a cruise ship setting, protagonist Sally Muccio and the entire gang set sail for a fun-filled, semi-working vacation. With her dad headlining a mortuary event, Sally and her coworker have been slated to work in the galley to cater desserts (her famous, or shall I say infamous, fortune cookies and coffin cookies) for the event. Except not all goes as planned when Sal’s nemesis, and her grandmother’s best friend, Nicoletta Gavelli, joins the cruise. Ms. Bruns knows how to set the stage for misadventure and mayhem from the very start and the story pulled me in and kept me entertained throughout the entire book. I just adore the cast of core characters—they’re lovable, some are humorous (especially Sally’s dad and grandmother), some are caring, and others add spark. I really enjoyed that Sally’s husband, Mike, and their young daughter, Cookie, are on page more this time around. It’s not easy to juggle family life, work, and trying to solve a mystery, but the author is to be commended for the ease with which she seems to craft each scene.

When Sally finds the galley director stuffed in the freezer, Nicoletta immediately becomes the number suspect after a very public argument with the victim. As much as Sally doesn’t want to, it becomes apparent she’s going to have to investigate, especially after Nicoletta is thrown into the brig. The author does a marvelous job including descriptions of the ship and the brig area, and the details add to the authenticity without detracting from the fast-moving plot. With a ship-full of people, guests and employees alike, there was a boatload of suspects to consider. Was it a disgruntled employee or did one of the guests have a bad experience with the victim? Sally delves into uncovering secrets as she bakes up a storm. There are twists and turns with misdirection thrown in for good measure, that kept me guessing. With the delightful cast of core characters and an intriguing plot, this is a book worth savoring while dreaming of a tropical vacation!

Being the owner of Sally’s Samples cookie bakery, Sally and her best friend, Josie, are constantly baking up sweet treats, even while on board the ship. The author includes several delicious recipes at the back of the book.

I was provided with an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Every time I open up a book in the Cookies & Chance Mystery series by Catherine Bruns I feel like I am visiting family and in the twelfth book, Seasoned with Murder, we are going on a cruise !!! How can anything bad happen when you are in the middle of the sea on a ship where the only people you know are the family you are with. Well..... Catherine can find a way and main character Sally Donovan and her co-worker Josie will find themselves right in the middle of all the chaos !!!

In Seasoned with Murder Sally's father has gotten the entire family tickets for an entire week on the Seas the Moment cruise ship. Everyone in the family is going .... Sally, her husband and their infant daughter, Cookie, Sally's parents, her grandmother, Sally's sister Gianna, her husband Johnny, their infant son Alex as well as Sally's partner Josie and her husband Rob. And because she cannot be left out Gramma Rosa's best friend and neighbor as well as Johnny's grandmother, Mrs. Gavelli and her boyfriend Ronald are going but paying their own way. Sally's father happened to get free tickets for the family because he is there to do a presentation for his funeral business and promote the book he wrote. The only thing he didn't tell Sally and Josie was that he worked it out so that they would be doing all the baking for the mortician exposition and the only thing he didn't tell the entire family is that they would be on the first senior citizen cruise for the company.

Unfortunately on the first morning they go to the kitchen to start working on the desserts they find Sarah Leigh, the executive director and their "boss", frozen in the walk in freezer. And when security on the boat search Sarah Leigh's room, they find Mrs. Gavelli's shawl with pills in the hidden pocket. Security take Mrs. Gavelli into custody immediately and rule the murder solved and case closed. But Sally and Josie know that even though Mrs. Gavelli and Sarah Leigh had a run in, there is no way Mrs. Gavelli would have killed her and where would she have gotten the poison in the middle of the ocean ? Luckily for them Gianna is a lawyer and she is on the case in the legal form and Sally and Josie decide to look into the murder in the way they know best.....

As Sally and Josie start looking into Sarah Leigh's life they find that there are quite a few people that disliked her and might have wanted to see her dead ... and some of them are on the ship. Luckily for them Sarah Leigh's cousin Sherry also works on the ship so they are able to get some information from her. And the more they dig, the deeper they get into Sarah Leigh's life and the list of suspects gets longer and longer. And they have a limited amount of time to find the real killer because the ship has been turned around and is heading back to Florida and when it does Mrs. Gavelli will be formally arrested and taken into custody !!

Readers cannot get enough of this series !! You cannot help but fall in love with the people, the storyline and everything else !!! There is so much more that I could tell you to convince you but I'm sure you have enough intel and have come to the same conclusion that I did.....you NEED the Cookies & Chance Mystery series in your life and you want to be a part of this crazy family !! I cannot say enough good things about Bruns and her writing !! The best thing that I can tell you is to RUN, not walk, to the nearest bookstore, your computer or wherever you get your books and get ALL of the books in this series, if you haven't already and lock yourself in a room with snacks and beverages and RUN AWAY WITH SALLY & JOSIE AND CREW !!!! It will be the best thing you've done in a while !!

Seasoned with Murder is the twelfth book in Catherine Bruns’ Cookies & Chance Mysteries series. The storyline is well plotted and flows smoothly in this steadily paced whodunit. The three-dimensional characters are well developed, and the mystery is intriguing. There is no shortage of twists and turns, red herrings, and suspects to keep the reader engaged. Ms. Bruns’ descriptive writing draws readers in, making them feel like they’re taking part in the action. I recommend this delightful series to readers who enjoy well-crafted cozy mysteries.

Sally “Sal” Donovan and her husband, Mike, who owns a small construction company, are the proud parents of a daughter, Corinne, who they’ve nicknamed Cookie. Sal is the owner of Sally’s Samples, a novelty cookie shop in Colwestern, New York, and her best friend since childhood, Josie Sullivan, is the shop’s talented baker. Josie and her husband, Rob, have four boys. Sal’s younger sister, Gianna Gavelli, a successful attorney, and her husband, Johnny, a history teacher, have one son named Alex. Sal and Gianna’s parents, Domenic “Dom” and Maria Muccio, are often an embarrassment, but their escapades often distract people from life’s problems. Grandma Rosa, who lives with Dom and Maria, has an adorable habit of mixing up the words in everyday clichés, always gives Sal sage advice, and is the glue that holds the family together. Johnny’s sharp-tongued grandmother and Grandma Rosa’s friend, Nicoletta Gavelli, is typically a thorn in everyone’s side.

Dom is the main speaker at a mortuary event that was taking place during a Caribbean cruise, and Sal and Josie have been hired to cater desserts, including their popular fortune and coffin cookies. Sal’s entire family, Josie, Rob, and even Nicoletta are onboard the Seas the Moment. Given Sal’s propensity for finding murder victims, it isn’t a complete surprise when she finds the body of the executive director of galleys, Sarah Leigh Walker, in a walk-in freezer. Nicoletta becomes the prime suspect due to a public confrontation with Sarah Leigh and the fact that her shawl was found in the victim’s room. Sal and Josie find themselves deeply involved in the investigation and in harm’s way once again.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Sal and Josie, along with their families, are on a cruise ship for a week long vacation. Free, because Sal's father, Dom, is a featured presenter on mortuary topics, and Sal and Josie are helping with cookie baking for the events. So not exactly free. But a relaxing trip is ruined when a body is discovered and one of their party is held for murder.

This series revolves around family members and close friends, and one of the beloved characters is Grandma Rosa with her funny sayings using incorrect words. Another is a neighbor, Mrs. Gavelli, who is the total opposite personality of Grandma Rosa, and is related by marriage to Sal's sister. I love the author's interactions of these two older ladies with others. From Dominick to Nicoletta Gavelli, there isn't a dull moment.

If you have ever been on a cruise ship, you will find some of the descriptions similar to your cruising experience. However, author Catherine Bruns fills in some of your behind-the-scenes lack of knowledge. Hopefully we will never know if the brig is anything like she describes! But one thing I know for sure, her sailing adventure with these delightful characters will keep you on the edge of your seat, from beginning to end. Another wonderful entry to a fabulous series!

Sally and her family are up to it again! Thanks to her father speaking to a group of funeral directors, the entire family gets to go on a cruise for free. The only catch is that Sally and Josie have to bake cookies for several events on the ship. They meet with the executive director of the kitchen who is not the most pleasant person on the ship. She flirts with every man she meets, including Mrs. Gavelli’s boyfriend Ronald. Nicoletta is furious and gets into a fight with her. The next day when Sally goes to get some dough out of the freezer, she finds the executive director frozen inside! Because of the argument the previous evening, Nicoletta is the prime suspect. She begs Sally to help her find the real murderer. As in the rest of the series, the quirky group is up to their usual shenanigans. Although this book is part of a series, it can still be read as a stand alone.

Love this new installment in the Cookies & Chance Mysteries. Sal and Josie and the gang are invited to cruise on the Seas the Moment cruise ship, so Dom Muccio can present at a mortuary convention on board. Sal and Josie are invited to make their famous coffin cookies. Drama surrounds the cooks in the kitchen (ok, the galley) and Sal is back at her detecting skills. This time, Nicoletta may have sounded off to the wrong person. Now she is a suspect and acting as squirrelly as ever. So much for a grand vacation for the gang.

I find myself really looking forward to each new installment in this series. Well done Ms. Bruns!

When you read a book in this series you know that you'll get a mystery, some family moments, and some laughs. This one was no exception.
Sally and her family and friends are on a senior cruise, Sally and Josie are helping the staff with their cookie recipes. As happens to Sally, she's in the wrong place at the wrong time and winds up finding a dead body. When Nicoletta is accused of the crime, Josie and Sally try to find the real culprit. While Nicoletta drives everyone crazy, they know she's not a killer.
This was a fun addition to the series and was a quick and easy read. I enjoyed the setting away from home this time, and Dom's funeral puns were so bad but funny. An enjoyable story!

I love this series, so I was delighted to set sail with Sally and her very extended family in the well plotted, well written Seasoned with Murder. Sally and Josie hope for some romantic time with their hubbies, but a murder has a different plan. Ms. Bruns provides plenty of drama, red herrings, plot twists, possible motives and suspects and keeps the action moving. Once you begin reading, you will not want to put this entertaining tale down!

This is the twelfth book in the Cookies and Chance Mysteries, a charming series that just keeps getting better with Sal and her wacky family on a cruise vacation that ends too quickly when Nicoletta is arrested for murdering Sarah Leigh Walker, director of Seas the Moment galleys. You will enjoy a high seas adventure with Seasoned with Murder. I received an advance reader copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving my review.

Murder cruise?

5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Seasoned with Murder by Catherine Bruns. I knew I shouldn't have started this book on a weekend when I had multiple Halloween events to take my grandson to, but I couldn't wait. I was able to read in between events and I did lose some sleep, but so worth it! I loved going on a cruise with Sally and her family even though there is a murder to be solved and it wasn't as relaxing as Sally thought it would be. I'm ready for the next one on this series!

i requested this from library and cause they dont put a hold someone else gets to borrow it first, so unfair

her dad got the whole family, including her best friend and her husband, grandma and the neighbor grandma (she had to pay), all free trips on a cruise. they had to work with the kitchen teaching them how to make the deserts. the lady in charge of them was found dead in the freezer

the grandma neighbor got arrested for the murder. her shawl was found in the dead womans cabin with arsenic pills in the hidden pocket. she had words with the dead woman earlier

they are trying to solve the murder so she can be let free. she escaped from her cell on the ship and is hiding. there was a delay getting back to fl and jail due to the weather

meanwhile sal gets poisoned. she thinks the womans first husband killed her, but it turns out the sister was on the life insurance policy and so jealous , she did it. she also shot the first husband. she got arrested and then everyone got free trip on another cruise so they picked disney

there was a good lemon coconut recipe at the end, but i cant print from kindle so i emailed the author

Here we go again. As far as I am concerned, Nicoletta can rot in jail. THE most obnoxious person in the books. Of course, Sally is sure Nicoletta is innocent and decides to investigate.
Thank goodness there is only 1 book left in this series. The recipes save these books.

Reread in 2025. Same rating. [It became familiar about 2 chapters in] Now there are 3 books left in the series - neither of which I can get at the library. [I DO NOT purchase books. That is what libraries are for - especially those that allow one to get books from anywhere in the state]
