Jubal Cain burns to go west and see the great Rocky Mountains before the pioneers and their wagon trains streaming by his home, drive away the last of the wildness.
Maude Cooper is the only person who might change his mind.
He's too young to fight, but he's good with horses and a blacksmith's hammer and tongs, so when the Civil War comes, they take him anyway.
Maude says she'll wait, but she's young, and the fighting drags on for four long years.
Gibbons joined the Confederate Army on the run, and he doesn't plan to stay. Before he goes, he wants to teach young Jubal a lesson...
...and if it's the last the boy ever learns, all the better.
Good with a bow, and learning to fight with a six-shooter and rifle, Jubal battles to survive long enough to chase at least one of his dreams.
Fantastic Civil War book - cannot wait to read rest of the series, which as of this date is only two books. Phenomenal perspective from the life of young Union Soldier who becomes a man in three years at war. Will start book 2 and see what happens when he heads west to find a girl who promised to wait for him. Well written - highly recommend.
This book turned out to be pretty good. Started out slow but quickly turned into a very good read. I'm anxious to see where things go from here. There could be another five or six books in this series or more. Let's see if Tubal gets his woman. You know how that could turn out. Women can cause so much trouble,, lol
I really enjoyed this my first Wyatt Cochrane book. By the way wyatt, my name has no e on the end, but guess you have both Scotch and Irish blood. I will purchase book 2, and if it is as good as the 1st, will go for 3. Great read. Dave Cochran!
From the beginning of this book, I enjoyed reading about Jube. His friendship with his war buddies and his strange whacky horse. Looking forward to more about June and his friends.
I liked it very much being a bow hunter I love the hunting and then the bow saves his life I can tell the writer has been hunting with a string and a stick
Boy did I enjoy this book! It reminded me of the handed down tales my grandfather told of his grandfather who somehow fought on both sides and came close to being in the Battle of the Little Big horn. Great writing and awesome storytelling!
I don’t normally enjoy war stories but this book gave us the opportunity to get to know who Jubal is, even as a young lad. The civil war was a tragedy for our country but even though this book was fiction, it kept it real as far as the history went.
It's a Civil War story I've not seen the likes of before. It is easy to follow, and it maintains a well organized storyline. This story provides a personal perspective that can be felt. This is a read that you will ever be happy to have started.
Interesting read love hate suffering death anger faith.comrades in arms.suffering bitterness and hope for a better tommrow enjoyable interesting sad also
Very good start to the Jubal Cain series. An interesting look at the war from a different viewpoint. Good characters in a number that is easy to keep of.
Loved the book. A unique story of an awful time. Jubal’s crazy old horse, Ol Red, was a fun part of the book. Now please send us book two!! Can’t wait to see is she’s there!
I enjoyed the story. A little patchy in places but worth the time I spent reading. It’s good enough to make me want to move on to the next book in the series
