When a newly born Elizabeth Bennet is discovered to be a powerful earth mage, she is betrothed to Fitzwilliam Darcy, an equally powerful earth mage. His uncle arranges the betrothal, but he is determined that the two shall not meet until they are of an age to marry. Instead, from the time young Elizabeth is first able to pen a decent letter, she and Mr. Darcy become correspondents, sharing the news of their lives and magical exploits. As the years pass, the day draws ever closer in which the two will finally meet face to face.
A magical, epistolary reimagining of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.
“I am Elizabeth Bennet, I am nine years old, and I do not have to marry you until I am at least eighteen, so I do not see why I must write to you now.” (quote from the book)
This was a delightful epistolary short story. Letters are exchanged over a period of years between Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. They have been betrothed early on as they are both earth mages. You can see the growth of Elizabeth over the years and her spirited impertinence. I also found it unique how Ms. Courtney incorporated the insult from canon into the letters. Well done!
A very cute short story in letters style between ODC, who are betrothed from Elizabeth's 1st year. She starts writing to Darcy when she is 8 and he is 17. They, and we, get to know one another through the letters. Including their gift of magic. A bit of canon before the end to shake things up and on to a HEA!
Violence: None that I recall. There's talk of war injury, but nothing described.
Sexual: Mild. Most of it is talk of love through letters, so nothing physical.
This is entirely written in letters, and it's cute. In this variation on Pride and Prejudice, Darcy and Elizabeth are betrothed from Elizabeth's birth because they are both powerful mages. The letters exchanged start from the time Elizabeth is 9 and Darcy is 17 up until they meet and marry at 20 and 28-ish.
It's a fun short read, but not anything earth-shattering. The pacing is too slow and the length too short for it to have been anything that really grabbed me personally. But, I read JAFF for the fluff of it. It's what I go to when I really have no brain but desperately need to be entertained. I already know the characters, the setting, and the majority of the plot, so it's perfect for an easy read.
The most interesting parts of this were Elizabeth's experiments with horses, and the little aside about Wickham.
Like I said, cute, but nothing to...ahem...write home about.
This was fun though I wanted more. I love epistletory novels so I really enjoyed this reimagining of Elizabeth Bennett and Fitzwilliam Darcy getting to know one another. I especially loved Elizabeth’s voice at age 9, as I found it believable. I enjoyed the way the Wickham and Bingley elements of P&P got incorporated without telling the same tale over again. I would have liked more in each year…more of them slowly getting to know each other better; more of their trust growing;more to really feel like they are falling in love as it’s happening.
Cute short story, that you can read for free, from one of my favorite P&P writers. It is written in form of letters between mostly Elizabeth and Darcy, starting when Elizabeth is only 9. They start writing this early, because they are engaged, but are not allowed to meet until Elizabeth is 18. I highly recommend this little novella as well as the author.
It was a very cute and sweet short story. I quite enjoyed it, and it was definitely worth the read. However, it is very loosely based on Pride and Prejudice, so don’t expect it to follow the main plot.
A cute fantasy alt universe fan fic. I think this would make a wonderful stand-alone original tale as it doesn't share a lot with the original characters. I loved the whimsical magic.
Pride and Prejudice in a nutshell--quite literally--and with magic. I loved this and expect I shall love other books that Ms. Courtney has written someday soon. :)
