Magical Artifacts Institute #1-4.5

Magical Artifacts Institute: The Complete Series

Rate this book
Fae mayhem—always fun, never boring! Enjoy the complete Magical Artifacts Series in one volume.

Dangerous Fae artifacts. Creepy basements. One unfortunate binding spell. What could go wrong?

Joining the Magical Artifacts Institute as an artifact hunter has always been my dream job. Problem is, they keep rejecting my applications. So when I find a dangerous Fae artifact stashed in my temp job’s basement, I know I’m about to prove them wrong.

Unfortunately, the arrogant stranger who interrupts my find doesn’t agree with my good fortune. Aidan belongs to the Institute and insists on following procedure and confiscating my artifact. He’s welcome to try, but there’s one small problem.

Oops, make that two: he’s triggered a binding spell that won’t allow more than a few feet between us, and someone has unleashed a nightmarish Fae hound that’s trying to turn us into lunch.

Now I must break the bond, escape the hound, convince Aidan that I’d be the best Institute worker ever, and figure out who’s willing to kill to get to my artifact. Sounds hard? That’s okay—I might be only one-sixteenth Fae, but I’ve got plenty of tricks up my sleeve!

Binge the Magical Artifacts Institute series—a fun, fast-paced Urban Fantasy series featuring tricky Fae, magic, adventure, and an opposites-attract slow burn romance.

Included in this collection:
Finding Fae Artifacts
Playing Fae Games
Breaking Fae Spells
Fixing Fae Problems
Extra story - Choosing Fae Gifts

Wow!

What a great series. Maddie is stubborn and headstrong, sparky, caring and funny. Great story, I am now obsessed with Isa Medina. In a good way that is. I want to read all the books.

Fun urban fantasy

The Magical Artifacts Institute was organized to keep dangerous fairy objects out of the hands of unscrupulous human collectors who want to use their magical powers to control others..

Isa Medina has created a fascinating world where humans,, sorcerers, members of the Fae aristocracy and humans with some fairy blood meet, plot and scheme to achieve their ends, with the help of some magical creatures.

Maddie longs to leave her string of dead end temp jobs and become an investigator for the Institute. A chance encounter with its CEO proves that the half fae Maddie has a real flair for linking with magical objects. Their initial friction is turned into a growing attraction.

This story collection is cohesive and fun, and leads the reader into a literal fairy tale. where magic is real and love is in the air.

Maddie Dover: Too stupid to live, too lucky to die, too cute to stay mad at.

So, basically a cat. She certainly has the curiosity and the always landing on her feet parts down.

To be fair to her, she does also come up with some plans that could be described as clever and brave, not just ones that can be described as naive and foolhardy (though some of those, too, particularly early on). She has a fun voice, and is an appealing and always well-intentioned character, who makes allies readily, an important trait in an urban fantasy protagonist (especially an underpowered one).

Her love interest is the usual reserved, brooding, emotionally defended hot action wizard, so we don't get to see much depth to him. But we do get to see her rescue him, more often than vice versa, so there's that.

The world feels remarkably unpopulated, particularly the unnamed, generically American this-world city; we never see anyone who isn't part Fae or somehow involved in the plot, and it never feels like Maddie is at risk of giving away the Secret by, for example, summoning a fae creature the shape of a dog, the size of a horse, and the colour of moss in the middle of the city, because nobody ever seems to be around to see it. The fae world feels just as unpopulated by non-plot-relevant extras; she notes at one point that she hasn't ever seen a servant in the manor.

The copy editing at first looked pretty clean, which is why I picked it up even though it seemed like it would be fairly light and insubstantial and potentially constructed mostly out of tropes. I suspect (I could be wrong) that a very good editor has been over a not particularly great manuscript and, inevitably, missed some things; there are a large number of places where idioms are fumbled, not quite the right vocabulary word is chosen, or a sentence changes grammatical direction partway through, and the author tends to type "this" for "his," but at least the punctuation is mostly in the right places except for a few missing question marks. It was a light read, though not as made-from-box-mix as I feared, and I did enjoy it enough that it wins a spot in the Bronze tier of my Best of the Year list, though I won't be dashing out to buy other books from the author. It's better than mediocre, but still some distance from great.

Fantastic Read

Reading this series of books was fantastic, it’s the first time I’ve actually read anything in the supernatural realm that was actually this funny. I hope the author decides to write more on this venue with the same characters.

This series is adventurous, exciting and fun! I like that Maddie doesn't always seem to know what she's doing, but when push comes to shove she'll come through. With a lot of help from Greenie, her fae hound!

I've had so much fun hanging with Maddie and Aidan. There's always something happening, and there's dangerous artifacts, spells, potions, magic, not to mention tricky fairies and sorcerers. I also enjoy the characters banter and the slow burn romance. The books are fairly short and easy to read. I recommend!

Fae magic and artifacts

What a fun story! Maddie is spunky and confident. Also pretty smart. She wants to work at the institute but keeps getting rejected. Until her and the director end up working together and she gets him to promise her a job. A lot of hijinks ensue and she ends up in Faerie among other things. But leave it up to Maddie to get herself out of any situation.

If urban fantasy is your thing, then this is the boxset for you. I highly enjoyed it!

Fun series

Maddie has wanted to work for the Institute her whole life, so of course when she final gets the chance, things go sideways. I really loved the characters in this series, especially Greenie, and the storylines are great. The series is full of humor and action, and I hated having real life intrude. I am looking forward to more from the author.

Great Series

Fast paced but did not skimp on world development or the development of the main character. I really liked her. She knew what she wanted and never got discouraged and never gave up on the pursuit of her dream occupation. The story behind the search for each artifact was engaging. But what I loved the most was the far hound, Greenie, that she saved. I love Greenie.

Maddie is a good main character, fun and witty and bold and smart. Aidan is a good match for her as the director of the magical artifacts institute. This is a great easy read (except for the description of Lord Velei’s house ☺️). Good characters in Lockhart and Ren and Lord Velei and Greenie. Love that this can in all one volume for me to download and read. A fun read that I recommend.

A great read, an interesting story set between earth and the land of Faerie, and the adventures of Maddie Drover, a magical artifacts hunter, 1/16th Fae herself.

Many adventures, well told, and richly described, with a side dish of new relationship skillfully woven into the fabric of the tale.

the perfect job

I loved Maddie’s journey finding and getting her job, her tenacity and bad luck (that turned good) was entertaining and kept me reading to see how it turned out. Her pets were cool as was her view of the fae world.

It was light and fun. The stories were too short but since there were a few in a row it all came together for a decent story.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

3.5*

First time read the author's work?: No

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
