Many of us believe that we aren’t good enough to meet other people’s expectations. Maybe you can’t wrap words around why, but lurking beneath the surface of the carefully curated façade you present in public, it’s there. Being missed and marginalized by others moves us to assume we’re not quite good enough for God either.
The great news woven throughout the Gospel according to Luke is that perfection is not a prerequisite for a deep and personal relationship with Jesus. In fact, this riveting account reveals that Jesus is especially fond of ragamuffins in need of a safe place to lean in and linger! Join Lisa Harper in this Bible study of a literary masterpiece that doesn’t celebrate the elite, but embraces the outliers, outcasts, and overlooked!

Lisa Harper is a hilarious storyteller and theological scholar―a gifted communicator whose writing and speaking overflows with colorful, pop-culture references that connect the dots between the Bible era and modern life. “Her God-given ability to not merely teach the Word but package it in a way that stirs the heart and calls to action is incomparable” says Priscilla Shirer. For six years Lisa served as the director of Focus on the Family's national women's ministry where she created the popular Renewing the Heart conferences. The next six years found her serving on the local level as the women's ministry director at a large church in Nashville. As the author of eleven books, and a Masters of Theological Studies with honors from Covenant Seminary, she is now a sought-after Bible teacher and speaker. Lisa was on the Women of Faith national arena tour and speaks at many other large events as well as at hundreds of churches all over the world. Lisa describes her greatest accomplishment to date as getting to be Missy’s mama.
Listened to the "streaming video" series. Adding the study guide to my to-buy list to go through the series again. Great teaching, humor, and insights.
When outliers, outcasts, and the unlovely step into the embrace of King Jesus, they become beautiful.
Luke is my favorite Gospel, and the whole idea of gut-level compassion is an excellent takeaway. It was really encouraging to see Jesus' love for the outcasts and His treatment of women.
I thought Harper did a good job with the content, given that the book of Luke is much too big to cover in 8 weeks of study. Her videos were very engaging. Our Bible Study had some excellent discussions of the material. (We do things differently than recommended--we do a week's lesson at home, then watch that week's video and discuss that week's questions.)
The whole Beautiful Word series appears to have a three-day-a-week format for personal study, as well as coloring pages and a "Reflection" page after each session ("what are the BEAUTIFUL WORDS the Holy Spirit has been highlighting to you through this time? Write or draw them in the space below:"). None of those really meshed well with my "all business" preferences, but I'm sure it's perfect for others.
I'd probably recommend this most strongly for people with beginner to intermediate Bible knowledge, or anyone who is doing the study with a good Bible Study group.
The Book of Luke Video Streaming Bible Study. I give this 5* I did this study with a group of women at a local church. We all loved the streaming video. Lisa brings out Truth by being transparent and telling heartwarming stories. We learned a few Greek words as she dove into the text and culture. She brought out the differences between the books of Luke, the only Gentile writer, with the other gospels. Lisa reminds us that Jesus displayed compassion to those who were outcasts and less-than. The book is multi-faceted, including home study pages, coloring pages, and bookmarks of the verses to cut out. After the eight-week study, you’ve gone through the whole book of Luke. I highly recommend this study.
This is an 8-session study on the gospel of Luke. The audiobook is apparently all the content from the videos - the author doing the teaching, and others in the room contributing the Bible-readings. Because of that, I don't know whether you'd really call this a book; but if you would, it's probably one of the best books on Luke I've come across.
Lisa is from Tennessee and her voice has a real warmth to it. She gives you a framework for the gospel of Luke, and combines Bible-teaching with stories from her personal life. I did the study with an organisation called Faith Gateway and at the end, the editor said: "I could listen to Lisa every single day". I think I could too.
I’m sorry to Lisa Harper, as her videos are engaging and I enjoyed those… but this was my least favorite Bible study. I got more out of our group listening to her talk in the videos than in the weekly sessions in the book. I did like that it only had 3 days of “homework” though. The questions were either not deep enough (regurgitating the point of the verses/story) or were too deep and we didn’t understand what she was asking. I don’t recommend this one.
I love Lisa Harper's bible studies. She is a masterful storyteller. However, this was not her best work. For one thing, she completely ignored some of the most difficult passages in Luke. I would have rather dug into passages that are hard to understand than go over stories that are well-known and well-loved over and over again. I don't really feel like I gained a lot of knowledge from this study, but it was a good reminder of the love of Jesus as we prepare to enter this time of advent.
I love anything from Lisa Harper and did enjoy this study. I'll admit that some of the language in the early weeks was a bit off- putting for me but I got over it and did like this study. Life got crazy for a couple of months so this took me more than 8 weeks to complete. But was well worth the time and effort.
This was my first time with Lisa Harper. Wow! Our small group watched the videos and explored the group questions. I also worked through some of the personal study. Lisa offers great stories and wonderful insight into scripture. Her passion is contagious and I hope to spend time with more of her literature.
Lisa Harper is a great Bible teacher. Not only were her insights enlightening, but she leads participants through a beautiful exercise of connecting to the Compassion of Christ throughout the study. I did this with a small group and it was very well received regardless of where each of us were in our own journey with Christ.
I have always loved Lisa Harper’s studies. This one was good but not my favorite of all I’ve done by her. Loved how she focused on how Jesus came for the outliers and outcasts with gut-level compassion. Good study overall.
The video component of this book is amazing. I've never been so close to tears so often. Gut-level compassion is about seeing the outliers and the outcast. The discussion questions are hard, they require honesty and come from a place to truly drive you to learn to be more like Jesus.
Truly helped me understand God and Jesus Love us unconditionally and felt we were Worth Jesus dying on the cross to save u. Can't Thank God and Jesus enough and for Lisa Harper to show us this . God bless her always and everyone
An incredible Bible study! I love to hear Lisa Harper preach. I really needed this study on Luke. It is about the outcast and outliers and how Jesus still loves and uses them (us). The videos were great, and I loved the personal study time as well.
Great bible study! Love the video tie-in. Lisa Harper is a wonderful bible teacher. She explains the lessons in Luke perfectly with her relatable, funny, engaging style!
