Snowed-In Mermaid
A deadly collision—between a vampire's car and a nymph's tree home—delays Brooke's plans to leave Purgatory Falls. Instead of going home for the Christmas holidays, she needs to get to the bottom of a potential curse that left her friend Twyla in the hospital and might have killed the vampire. With a storm bearing down and Twyla's condition deteriorating, Brooke and her favorite police officer, Aiden, must team up to discover all they can about the dead owner of the local ski resort and all the pies he had his fingers in before the snow traps them in place.
A mermaid and a dragon shifter make an unlikely crime-solving duo in this new small-town paracozy series!

I inhaled the first book in this series and I couldn’t wait for the sequel. However, despite lots to love in this second outing, it was a bit hit and miss for me.

What I liked: The theme of how family can be suffocating and the need to forge your own path was strong throughout the novel, and I thought it was very well done in each instant. It was real and handled with the care and depth it deserved.

Twyla’s peril was upsetting and I admire the author for going there with such an important character.

The descriptions of the snow were spot on. I could feel the cold and the tension of driving through those snow storms. Scary stuff.

What didn’t work for me: Aiden is a nice guy. He’s a lot like Brooke. Guarded, escaped from a controlling family, noble and decent. Unfortunately, he’s not a very interesting person. I’m sure I’d want to have him by my side in real life, but Brooke and Aiden are as dry as crackers when they’re together, and as 90% of the book is the two of them talking, it drained the enjoyment for me. I sorely missed Tavros, Twyla and Esmeralda. The brief mentions of Brooke’s attraction to Aiden felt forced.

The murder mystery was too dependent on building deals and money and had very little to do with paranormal and magic. Take away the paranormal aspect and it wouldn’t have changed a thing with this plot line. I felt the end reveal was a bit of a cheat too because there was no way I could have put the clues together and guessed who the killer was.

The writing didn’t draw me in as it usually does when I read books by this author. It’s very dialogue heavy, with little description or input from Brooke. I also missed the elements of magic and fantasy that made me fall in love with Purgatory Falls. They were still there, and I loved when they appeared, but it was only in a handful of scenes.

Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC. I’m voluntarily leaving an honest review.

NOTE: I was given an advance copy of the book for an honest review. Here is my review:

In the first book of the series, Mermaid in Troubled Water, Brooke Newhouse (a mermaid) stumbled across a Paranormal community known as Purgatory Falls in the Rocky Mountains, just in time to be a near-witness to the murder of a werewolf. (Yes, a silver bullet is the cause of death.) She ended up there as she was fleeing a broken engagement and a disappointed mother whose only goal for her daughter is to have her marry a human male and raise the next generation of her type. As the book Snowed-in Mermaid begins, she is on the verge of going to spend Christmas with her family, not knowing whether she will be returning or submitting to her mother’s wishes, and becomes involved in the investigation of another Paranormal murder, this time of a vampire by a magical curse. Her involvement comes about because the vampire’s car crashed into the tree dwelling of her best friend, a tree nymph. The nymph is suffering from more than just the damage to the tree, but also an edge of the murderous curse, and Brooke begins desperately trying to find the perpetrator in order to reverse the curse that is killing her friend.
Various motives (some of them interrelated) make their appearances and the investigation is partially complicated by the question of who was the actual target and who was possibly collateral damage. Adding to the complexity (at least for this reader) was the problem of keeping all the family members of the dead vampire straight. In the end everything is straightened out and Brooke makes some choices about her own life plans.

Brooke is finally going home at Christmas to spend time with family.
She knows she may not be coming back to the town she now feels at
ease with and the circle of friends she now has.

In the early hours of the morning that Brooke is supposed to return home,
Aiden comes by to let her know that Twila, the tree nymph that has been
more a mentor than anyone else is in the hospital after a car crashed into
her tree, killing the vampire driving it, and Twila wants to see her.

This is the second book in the Purgatory Falls series and is a great continuation
of the series.

There's nice development of the characters, and a continuation of ties and
friendship bonds getting stronger.

Snowed-In Mermaid by Nikki Haverstock is the second book in the Purgatory Falls Mystery series. Mermaid Brooke is about to leave Purgatory Falls, when her friend nymph Twyla's tree is damaged by a cursed vampire car, killing the vampire and with Twyla in a critical condition, Brooke is asked to help. An engaging paranormal cozy mystery and although I am not usually a fan of these, I am loving this series. Interesting characters, although the vampires were a bit strange. The chemistry between Brooke and Aiden was a bit lacking but otherwise an enjoyable book.

I loved book one so was eager to read book two and it did not disappoint! Thinking she was going home for Christmas, Brooke instead finds herself neck deep in a mystery of a potential curse! With Twyla the tree nymph in hospital from a collision with a vampires car and slowly getting worse our favourite mermaid teams up with our favourite dragon shifter Aiden to find out what the actual hell is going on, oh and there’s a blizzard on the way! It’s a great visit to Purgatory Falls, exciting, gripping and fun and I would love to see more from this little paranormal town.

Received an Arc of this book.book 2 inthe series was just as enjoyable as book 1.
It is now Christmas and Brook (a mermaid)is about to leave to spend Christmas with her parents. Knowing her mother Brook realizes she will never return to Purgatory Falls.
Before she leaves her best friend Twyla (a tree nymph) is hospitalized due to a a car crashing onto her tree. The driver is dead.
Twla is very ill and it looks like magic was involved with killing the driver.
Brook decides to stay and help Twla recover and find who killed the driver
Will Twla recover and will Brook solve the mystery and will she leave forever or not.

Another solid read in the Purgatory Falls Mystery series. I enjoyed getting to learn more about the characters, but I felt there were a few areas where I would have liked to know a little more. Time will tell if these things get revealed down the road in future books. Overall, this is a quick, light read if you want to decompress after a long day. Looking forward to book 3.

I was touched and moved by the love displayed in this book as Twyla is gravely injured when another man is death cursed and his car crashes into her tree causing the curse to fall on her and her tree as well.

Aiden and Brooke along with their other friends race against time to find out who cast the curse and get that person to reverse the curse before Twyla dies as well. Adding to the suspense is a snowstorm for the entire length of time they are searching for the person and the fact that Aiden’s truck is sabotaged while they’re riding in it!

This is such an enjoyable series about a mermaid who is trying to find her place in the world after doing everything her controlling mother wanted her to do, who finally leaves on her own and ends up in a paranormal town and finds love, friendship, warmth, adventure, excitement and purpose in life as well as discovering magic and an ability to solve mysteries whether they be murder or whatever.

I wholeheartedly recommend you get not only this book but the first book in this series, Mermaid in Troubled Waters, so you can fully enjoy this series thus far! It proves just how much we humans need others in our lives as well by giving us support, encouragement and steadfastness as we navigate through this experience called life!

It’s a great cozy mystery so I urge you not to pass it up but enjoy these two books so you’ll be excited when the third book comes out later this year to find out what your friends are up to this time and how they solve another case!

The characters in this series are so fun! I love the diversity of character types - Brooke, the mermaid, Tavros, the Minotaur, Aiden, the dragon shifter, Twyla, the tree nymph, and many others. I also love how they band together to help solve the murder of a prominent vampire, and to support Twyla, who was injured during the murder and who is slowly dying. There are lots of interesting things to consider that I never even thought about - such as, what happens when a tree nymph's tree is damaged? I really enjoyed reading this story, not only due to the intricate plot, but also just to see the unusual perspectives of a magical world unlike the same-old-same-old offered by most authors. This is a fresh view of a world with magic in it, combined with a murder mystery and some really fun characters. The only thing I didn't like was Brooke's continuing feeling that she had to give in to her parents' insistence that she return to their mundane, non-magical world and her mom's plans to set her up for marriage to a wealthy "sugar daddy". I kept wanting to grab her by the shoulders and shake some sense into her. But other than that, this is a great 2nd book to the series (and if you haven't read the first one yet, I highly encourage you to do so, because it's really good as well, and you'll get the most out of reading both books in order). I received an ARC copy of this book, but the opinions expressed are solely my own.

I loved this book! It can be read as a stand-alone, but it’s helpful to read the first book of the series (Mermaid in Troubled Water”). Brooke has been visiting the supernatural community of Purgatory Falls. She is expected to return home to her parents’ house for the holidays, where her domineering mother wants her to settle down and make a good marriage. Brooke has made good friends in Purgatory Falls though, and is happily learning about magic. On the eve of Brooke’s trip, a member of a wealthy vampire family is killed in an accident. His car hit a wood nymph’s giant oak tree. The wood nymph is now dying as a result of the accident and the curse that caused it. Brooke and Aiden (dragon shifter police officer) investigate the accident together with the help of their other friends in Purgatory Falls. They have to uncover the murderer in time to save the wood nymph’s life, while a snowstorm hits Purgatory Falls. The story is entertaining, clues abound, and there is some suspense before the satisfactory conclusion. Readers also get a little more information about Aiden’s own possible marriage contracts in this book, which may foreshadow a future plot or two. I can’t wait to read more stories about these characters and Purgatory Falls. Highly recommended! I received an advance copy of this book for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.

Visiting Brooke and her friends in Purgatory Falls is always a fun read. However, this visit takes a near tragic turn when Brooke's friend, Twyla is critically hurt when someone crashes into her tree. Twyla is rushed to the hospital but after doing all they can do her condition is worsening. Twyla and Aiden must find out what curse has affected her and find the spell to reverse it before it is too late.

Brooke has finally found a place where she feels she belongs. Due to her kindness and sweet personality she has made many friends. She would do anything possible for her friends. She is the kind of person we could all use as a friend. I like Brooke and her many interesting friends. The mystery was to me unpredictable. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. It will be very interesting to see what Nikki Haverstock comes up with for Brooke and friends in the next book.

Even though this is the second book in the series, it could be read as a stand alone. Do yourself a favor and read from the beginning so you can be better acquainted with Brooke and company.

I received an ARC of this book. My opinion is being left voluntarily.

I liked the first book a lot, I love the second one. This one wasn’t bogged down with describing the entire down. It got into the mystery immediately, and I also loved that the mystery I couldn’t figure out who dun it. This is definitely a Christmas in July book. It takes place around Christmas with a release date in July. Love the irony in that.

When a ski resort owning vampire’s car runs into a nymph’s tree it delays our heroine mermaid Brook from joining her family for Christmas. Twyla, the nymph, is not doing well after the accident. Brooke and Aiden, the dragon shifter police officer, begin investigating the crime battling a blizzard and someone who doesn’t want the crime solved.

This book was definitely had a the haves against the have nots vibe, which worked really well. This time we got to know the inhabitants of Purgatory Falls better. The focus remained on Aiden and Brooke but it was nice to see growth in the other characters as well. I love two things, paranormal and a mystery that I can’t figure out. This book delivered both.

I received this book as an ARC.

It’s Christmas time in Purgatory Falls and Brooke is torn. Her parents are pressuring her to return to the life they think is right for her, but she yearns to stay with the friends and new experiences she’s grown to love in town. When Twyla the tree nymph is hurt by an apparent accident everything else is put on hold as Brooke cannot leave without knowing she will be ok.
An accident becomes a dangerous murder investigation quite quickly when a curse is discovered on Twyla. A blizzard, annoying calls from her mother and indecision over her future in Purgatory Falls also haunt Brooke. However she and Aiden will stop at nothing to save Twyla and uncover a killer. Merry Christmas indeed.
Not your average Christmas story, but a fun holiday puzzle. I enjoyed seeing more of the extended town residents and learning more of the history of Purgatory Falls. Brooke’s personal journey is an excellent subplot. A fun, light read to escape the heat of summer for a time.

Brooke is due to return to her parent's home for Christmas, with the distinct possibility that she wouldn't return to Purgatory Falls, when her best friend Twyla, a wood nymph, is badly hurt when her tree is hit by a car.
I loved the first book in the series, Mermaid In Troubled Water, and this one builds on that. The paranormal element is accompanied by the whodunit content with the twists and turns keeping me guessing all the way to the end. It is also seeing how Brooke is growing in her magical abilities and love for the community and her new friends that adds to the story. I'm not sure what it is about paranormal stories that I enjoy so much, perhaps it's the thought that we could be more than just simple humans with magical abilities? I'm now really looking forward to reading the next one in the series.
I received an advance copy of this book from the author, however this did not influence my review of the book.

This was excellent really i loved book 1 but this one is even better....i could not stop until the last page and i just want more.

Brooke is enjoying her life at Purgatory Falls, having real friends for the first time and learning magic but her family is pressuring her to come home for Christmas and she knows that it means forever since her mother is against hers taying and she has a great influence on her...
When her friend Twyla gets hurt, Brooke has to be there for her and find the one responsible....no mattter what her mother is saying.

With two victims, a powerful vampire dead for good and Twyla suffering from a curse, who was the real target and what is the motive...Brooke must find answers and quickly if she wants to save her friends.

Snowed-In Mermaid is the 2nd book in the Purgatory Falls Mystery by Nikki Haverstock and I loved it! This book can easily be read as a standalone mystery or enjoyed as part of the series!

This book is so good!!!! The storyline was fascinating. I loved every second of this book and could not put it down! I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out who the murderer was and if Brooke could figure it out before something happens to hurt her.

I can't wait to see what is in store for Brooke in Purgatory Falls (& I really hope it involves the dragon detective)! I look forward to reading the next book! I know it'll be just as good!

This is definitely a must read paranormal cozy mystery! This is a quick read and tons of fun!

Sophomore book in the series is decent, but was a bit dragging at times. It takes place during a blizzard, and even in a magical world, the believability of some of the traveling descriptions is a bit much. Also, often the conversations are hard to follow as the author often does not indicate who is talking, and twice I think the author themselves lost track. It got confusing. Beta reader needs to catch that.
The magical flavor of the first book was bit lost in this one, and this one focused more on the murder mystery. Not a bad thing, but I liked the magical world this author portrayed, and wanted more of that. This could have been written without any kind of magic at all, and almost was.
But, it was good continuation of characters, and I will look to the next book. Sometimes, authors and sophomore books need to work out the bugs.

I received this book as an ARC. It stayed true to other Nikki Haverstock books - quick read, engaging characters, kept me guessing. I enjoyed the creativity behind the magical characters and the fast pace. I also appreciate the fact that Brooke, the protagonist, is personally growing and slowly becoming her own person. Snowed In Mermaid introduces several new-to-us residents of Purgatory Falls, which keeps the story line fresh while at the same time keeping familiar faces like Esmeralda, Aidan and Twyla.

I recommend this book and will definitely read it again. In fact, when I finished it I went back and reread the first book in the series- I didn’t want to be done with Purgatory Falls.

An enjoyable mystery that incudes vampires, mermaid shifter, dragon shifter, minotaur and witches. Brooke is a mermaid shifter who is in Purgatory Falls for a few months learning how to channel her magic but would really like to stay but her mother is relentless. Aiden is a dragon shifter who works with the police but is not actually a policeman even though everyone treats him like one, he helps Brooke solve the mystery. Their friend Twyla, a tree nymph, is in hospital after a vampire property developer crashes into her tree under a spell and she is near death. How Brooke and Aiden solve the mystery, and how Brooke even keeps up with the various vampire family tree is not to be missed. I look forward to reading more in this series.

I enjoyed this second book in the series even more than the first. The mermaid shifter Brooke is about to leave to join her family for Christmas and face pressure to return and find a "proper" husband, when her best fried Twyla's tree is damaged by a car and the driver is killed. Since Twyla is a tree nymph, this damages her as well, and her friends rally around to find out who would cause harm to a gentle person and cause a death - two deaths, if Twyla dies. The wonderful characters from the first book are all back and the story pulls you right along. - I received a review copy and freely leave this honest review.

SNOWED-IN MERMAID

I enjoyed the first book of this new series and looked forward to the second. This book DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!
There is paranormal murder, scheming, adultery, power plays and money….and our tree nymph, Twyla, is close to death as a result!
Will Brooke and Aiden figure out who murdered the rich playboy? Will it be in time to save Twyla? Will Brooke HAVE TO visit her family for Christmas and how will she get away from her mother to return to Purgatory Falls? What makes Chuy so protective of Brooke?
For the answers to some of these questions, you have to read for yourself!!

Exciting

This was really exciting as Brooke assists Aiden in trying to find a cure for their friend's illness as well as trying to discover who killed a member of a prominent local family. Brooke and Aiden find their lives in danger as a result. There is an attraction between them but Brooke is being pressured by her mum to return home. The characters and storyline are interesting and the series is very enjoyable. Looking forward to what comes next for these characters.

Poor Brooke! She was planning on visiting with her family over Christmas but wasn’t sure if she would be able to come back to Purgatory Falls. Her mother had other plans for Brooke. When her best friend Twyla’s tree is injured and Twyla is hospitalized it is a race against time to find out how to save her. With a huge massive snowstorm dumping snow on Purgatory Falls, Brooke and Aiden have the hard task of investigating. I loved reading this book. I love the characters, the world, and the magic. It is a fun story! I look forward to the next book!

This time the stakes are high as Brooke & Aiden rush to solve the murder (by magical curse) of local entrepreneur and wealthy ski resort owner before the curse can claim its secondary victim - their dear friend Twyla.

While I still enjoyed this second cosy mystery in the mystical town of Purgatory Falls it was not as much fun as the first in the series. I am not really sure why. Perhaps it was the lack any romance as I like my cosies (paranormal or otherwise with a side of romance).

So happy that I got the opportunity to read this book as a ARC. Snowed-In Mermaid is the second book in the Purgatory Falls Mysteries by Nikki Haverstock a great clean cozy mystery.

The book picks up a couple of months into Brooke's stay in Purgatory Falls as she learns and develops her magic skills while helping Aiden out with a case that involves a dead vampire and Twyla. Brooke and Aiden make a great team fighting crime with their each unique paranormal skills. Can't wait to see what the future holds for these two as their own relationship grows.

The book is well written with interesting characters. The mystery has many twists and surprises to keep you guessing. This is a fantastic paranormal cozy mystery series. The book can be read as a stand-alone. I loved this book and highly recommend it.

I received an ARC of this book, which is Book 2 in the series.

I really enjoyed the first book and in this book, Brooke is finding her feet in Purgatory Falls. An accident sees her friend Twyla injured and Brooke and Aiden do the whole detective thing to help, as Twyla’s very existence is on the line!

More backstory and character definition in this book and I’m really enjoying the play between Brooke and Chuy, another water creature. I’ll definitely continue to read this series.

An accident involving her friend Twyla's tree and killing the vampire driving the car that hit that tree, kept Brooke from leaving on her Christmas trip to see her family. Twyla is in hospital barely hanging onto life, so Brooke won't leave until she is sure that Twyla will be OK. Therefore she and Aiden, her dragon shifter friend, investigate the dead vampire and his whole family. Meantime, a snow storm has ensured that Brooke will not be leaving any time soon.

Very good read. This second book follows as Brooke continues on her journey at Purgatory Falls. Her good friend Twyla’s tree is hit in a car accident by a prominent businessman Doug. Doug is killed in the accident and Twyla’s tree is critically injured as well as Twyla. Twyla’s life hangs in the balance as Brooke and Aiden work to solve the mystery. As they work closely together they are growing closer together personally. Love is in the air.

Brooke is preparing to leave Purgatory Falls to visit her parents for Christmas when a terrible accident happens. A man is dead and Twyla is hurt! Aiden and Brooke must work together to find out what happened to the man in order to save Twyla's life.

I really liked this second book in the series and can't wait for more. It was really great to find out about some additional characters and what Twyla is. I definitely recommend this series and look forward to reading more of Nikki's books.
