This is an adorable how to book! I love the illustrations and instructions of how to create your own cute drawings of various items and creatures. This is a great book for someone who has a decent handle for the basics (drawing circles, straight lines) and seems geared for upper elementary - elderly stages of life. I was able to make some pretty cute drawings myself and the way the instructions were broken down made it simple!
I received an ARC courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley. The opinions expressed are mine alone.
Adorable Art Class is a delightful drawing guide with tutorials by Jesi Rodgers and book five of the Cute & Cuddly Art series. Due out 10th Jan 2023 from Quarto on their Rock Point imprint, it's 160 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.
The text throughout is upbeat and positive and very fun. There are lots of confidence building exercises for all ages to get pencils moving. The individual tutorials are arranged thematically: food & drink, the natural world, delightful doodads (like an umbrella, book, teapot, etc), holidays and combinations/larger pictures. The introduction includes a good beginning tutorial with tips and tricks for getting started, choice of tools and supplies and other support for making progress. Tutorials are shown in step by step completion series with lines added over several drawing steps to make a final drawing. The author has included colored versions of each finished drawing for inspiration.
One of my favorite aspects of this book is the lessons on how to combine and build on simple elements to produce hybrid drawings with two of more elements (like a cat donut and a snail with a house on its back). There are practice pages at the end of the book which are provided develop techniques, but which would also a good tutorial for planning full page illustrations.
I've been using doodling as an awareness/mindfulness exercise and it really does work. These are cute and good fun. It would make a really fun rainy day activity for younger kids to adult age. They're appealing and whimsical and sweet.
Five stars
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
This book is more complete than the average kawaii and it's cute if you are not a fan of the rigid anthropomorphic eyes added to cute shapes and want more. It shows a more complex build for each figure including tips for pushing us to find our own style but doesn't include step by step. Only shows three steps for each. As an art teacher from Kindergarten and up this is the perfect book for those who are used to drawing from geometric shapes like sculpturing the drawing with structure. I love artworks that start with techniques, color theory, materials, tops for line and texture, shading... and all of these take the drawing a step forward and motivate us to explore our own style. And this is as the title indicated just adorable. Makes a perfect gift for young artists. The animals selected are amazing and the extras awesome including tips on adding background, accessories, or to associate a story and personality to the characters.

Adorable Art Class: A Complete Course in Drawing Plant, Food, and Animal Cuties: Includes 75 Step-by-Step Tutorials By Jedi Rodgers
Well if you like drawing and adorableness this is for you. I have an 8 year-old daughter and she loves both of those things. I sat her down to show her the book and we immediately drew a dozen items found throughout the book. There’s a nice range of skill levels in the book so even as an adult I was entertained right alongside my girl. Her favorites were the lava lamp and storm cloud. I personally loved the garden gnome.
This is the perfect book to spend several fun filled hours with your kids or even by yourself. My daughter loved it so much she wants me to buy her a physical copy.
This book is adorable!! The author/artist/illustrator gives easy, step by step illustrated instructions for dozens of whimsical drawings sure to make you (or a recipient) smile! The ideas are timeless and can be used in hundreds of different ways. I'm already planning to order this for my granddaughter and can see her using and enjoying it for years to come!
My thanks to Rock Point for allowing me to read an ARC of the book via NetGalley. The book is set to be published on 1/10/23. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and are freely given.
This is a fun drawing how to book that shows the steps for drawing a variety of objects like mushrooms, plants, household objects, plants and animals. Most of them have faces, which I’m not really a fan of but is what’s popular right now. They’re easy to follow for kids or adults. It’s a sweet little book.
I read a self-destroying ARC via NetGalley for review.
Turn everyone into an artist! Yes, it’s possible you know! Just get this book when it arrives! You never know until you learn the most simplest tricks to draw EVERYTHING. This is the best guidebook so far! Yes, for kids and even for the grown ups. It’s so kawaii!
Thank you, Quarto Publishing Group- Rock Point, for the advance reading copy.
Super wonderful adorableness is found within these pages! Adults, as well as children can easily lose themselves trying out their own artwork by following this fantastic and easy guide.
Recommended!
Temporary PDF kindly provided by Rock Point / Quarto Publishing Group and NetGalley. Opinions shared are my own.
A cute entry-point to kawaii illustrations, suitable for all ages. I enjoyed the step-by-step instructions, but found it quite repetitive in the end; so this is better suited to beginners.
Thank you to Edelweiss and to Rock Point for this DRC.
This was so much fun to read and draw along with. The art style is so cute and the instructions are easy to follow. Great book for anyone, even someone like me who can’t draw well.
An adorable little book with simple but effective easy to follow instructions! I’d definitely recommend this to anyone who is just getting started with drawing, especially digital drawing.
This book is so cute! I'm sure I will definitely use them for my journaling. It delivers what it promises, a step by step tutorial on how to draw adorable stuff. I've only just flipped through this to write a review but I will definitely be trying to draw these later!
This is one of the most adorable art books I've seen. I loved each and every one of the characters and spent a lot of time sifting through the pages and smiling. I'm not an artist myself, but I did find myself sketching a pretty funny little taco. Turned out pretty good if I say so myself.
My 9 year old even sat down with me and tried his hand at drawing a taco. The step by step instructions were easy enough for my kiddo.
Now that I have several cute characters all over my office, I'm a happy camper. Loved this book.
Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.
