Facing Death

Rate this book
Bahrain, 29 November 2020: Romain Grosjean suffered one of the most terrifying accidents of the decade in Formula One. While his wife Marion watched helplessly as the drama unfolded thousands of kilometres away, the trapped French driver fought alone to save his life.

But giving up was never in his vocabulary. For a long time, he had had to demonstrate self-denial to keep his place among the twenty best drivers in the world. He had also had to learn, to his cost, to circulate in a microcosm where politics and money sometimes trample sporting values.

In this unique autobiography, interspersed with the moving comments of his wife, Romain recalls his accident, his childhood, his family and his career. Because looking death in the eye changes one’s view of the world. Returning to competition despite the after-effects, he became a symbol of resilience and courage.

Wow what an emotional book - not going to lie, shed a few tears during this read. I thought having Marions perspective was brilliant. A great look into what a beautiful, loving family they are and everything they went through together. Fantastic read! I’m so glad it was translated to English!

Romain and Marion teaming up to write a book on their experiences together with F1 sheds light on the struggles of an all encompassing sport. Marion’s words are more eloquent and understandable (unsurprising coming from her journalism background). The story weaves in and out of their relationship and the their professional drive. As the book was translated from French, I’m sure some of the difficult to read paragraphs are much clearer in their mother tongue. Overall, the story of Romain’s drive and perseverance after facing death is endlessly inspiring, but you know this if you’re even considering reading this book.

I was one of those fans watching around the world when Romain Grosjean had his accident and I was amazed he escaped the car and got himself out.

To hear the story from his and his wife's perspective and the day to day struggled throughout his career and the months following the accident are inspiring.

Highly recommended must read. This book is currently circulating through the family.

I loved the insight into motor sports and Romain and his family! I will say the translation into the English version wasn’t great. It seemed like they tried to do it word for word, which isn’t how traditional book translation works, and made somethings hard to decipher.

Great read about Romain’s Motorsport career and his famous accident in 2020. His wife Marion adds a great touch to it as well.
